Larry was truly unique and inimitable. I don't like to hear Larry being compared to Bruce Forsyth. Bruce F. had, had a good run as Gen Game host but it was the same thing every week, every season, usually 'sending up' the contestants. Audiences were becoming tired of Bruce Forsyth's acerbic style of presentation. Larry Grayson was a true breath of fresh air. He made it his own. He was always kind and generous with the contestants. He brought the show back to life and made it a huge success. I think it was probably Alan Boyd whose brilliant idea it was for Larry to present the show with lovely Isla St Clair as co-host.
bless him. sadly missed , if there were more people in the world, like larry grayson, the world would be a much much MUCH nicer place ......rip larry , watching in 2018 ..x
Speechless...Really can't comment about this one. All I will say is, I started out laughing and ended up crying... January 7th 1995 - What a grey, grey, day!! ♡
I met Larry in Nuneaton while I was doing some presenting work for a major company. I gave him a tea shirt that he liked which thrilled him to pieces. He was one of the nicest celebrities I have ever met. He was so genuine and warm. A comic genuis.
Thank you for uploading. I adored Larry, a truly wonderful entertainer who could bring the house down with a look to camera, a genius and a lovely, gentle human being. Greatly missed, dear Larry.
Well done Robby. What a marvellous clip. It's often easy to forget just how talented Larry was. Let's hope more comedy gems like this emerge in the future. Thanks for posting it.
Larry was something very special. He came down to Devon once to do a charity opening and some of the organisers told me that he was the gentlest and funniest man they had ever met. As Ken Dodd said : "He loved everybody and he wanted them to love him in return and yes, they did, they all loved Larry".
The world is a poorer place without the likes of Larry Grayson. Just reading all of the messages on here and they are all a great tribute to a truly lovely and humorous man. He left a legacy of affection and humour and that is the ultimate legacy to leave. R.I.P. Larry Grayson xxxx
Still being watched, still being appreciated after all this time! The word 'lovely' is used a lot here and mirrors how I remember him from my youth. Gentle comedy, (great asides to camera),his take on everyday tales, that people could relate to, very funny! My favourite: (paraphrased by Yarwood): "he's anyone's for a tin of beans!".....you are much missed Larry......regards to Slack and Everard! ;)
A wonderful man and one of the best entertainers and comedians Britain has ever produced. Sadly missed. Without Larry there would be no Paul O'Grady and the likes.
I grew up a couple of streets away from where Larry lived, he was always out walking his poodle, and had a kind word for everybody. He used to have everybody in the doctor's surgery in absolute pieces, it was quite surreal! A very sorely missed member of the Nuneaton community, and of the nation at large. Our local council need to be asked; why they wouldn't allow a statue commemorating him to be erected, and why they continually down-play his connections to the town. We are proud of our Larry. The reasons rumoured demonstrate small minded attitudes of councilors towards his overt homosexuality. If you're a fan of Larry Grayson, get on to Nuneaton and Bedworth Borough council, and give them some crap!! LARRY GRAYSON DESERVES TO BE IMMORTALIZED IN HIS HOMETOWN!!!
Yes, what is it that when everyone wants "open homosexual & lesbian, gay" etc and all that tosh, it's acceptable, yet when a public body is questioned about it they "clam up" in case they say something unPC - it's disgusting; Larry was a national treasure and Nuneaton IS a proud town and I'm absolutely sure that everyone would be behind the notion of a statue to commemorate this great man.
I've just been watching all his surviving shows over the last few nights for the millionth time (I think it’s a crime they wiped/lost so many....) I’ve never laughed so much... I think a statue is a lovely idea and would be very appropriate for all he did for show business and entertainment - they don’t make them like that anymore... Loved him. They’ve got statues and commemoratives of others I can think of that I feel were no-where near as funny...
I've heard he now has a Wetherspoons pub named after him in Nuneaton, which is rather good actually, as Wetherspoons name their various establishments after very noteworthy people of the various towns/city.
you couldnt help but like this man...such warmth and so funny...brings me back to very happy childhood memories watching larry on the generation game...may he rest in peace.
Larry was unbelievably funny. He was in Summer Season in my home town, Margate along with Rod Hull and Emu in 1973.Packed houses every performance.( All ages) We will never see that again !! Off stage, so kind , genuine and unnasuming. So skilled to get his type of humour across in a completely innoffensive way that appealed to everyone. IMO,no one comes close to him, before, since or ever will. A complete understatement to say we will never see his like again.
A comic genius, the like of which we will never see again. Saturday nights were made for Larry and he didn't disappoint the British public. Appears to have been a true gent too.
I loved Larry, gentle way funny with his act, being a lovely person it showed through. Larry was loved by many you felt you knew him personally. Its so sad he is no longer here , I watched this clip on tv, and thought how unwell he looked but as funny as ever, thanks for this posting, my friend knew Larry very well and has told me some wonderful tales which I must post on here, thanks for this lovely posting.
I am so glad I am of the age that I remember seeing people like Larry when they were the biggest names in entertainment. The last of the generation of variety artists who earned every ounce of their fame and adoration.
I recall watching this on the BBC in 94. Larry had lost some of his verve by this stage in his life (71), he lacked the effervescence and ebuliance he used to have, but he was still very warm and radiated love and kindness. What a beautiful man.
It made me laugh and feel sad at the same time to watch Larry here, such a funny funny man, no smut or bad language in his act. Today's comedians don't even put a smile on my face ( well, not very often!) God Bless you Larry.
Larry Grayson loved all the older stars (such as Evelyn Laye etc), i remember reading once that he stood at the grave of Arthur Lucan (Old Mother Riley), and had tears in his eyes as Arthur brought so much joy to others as Mother Riley and the tears were because Arthur had largely been forgotten. I really believe angels walk this earth and Larry Grayson was one of them and like Arthur Lucan he brought joy to so many.
Great comic timing. When he took on the Generation Game no-one gave him a hope in hell, but he increased the audience significnatly over Brucie's top rating (fact). I first saw him in an ITV show called "The Saturday Crowd" and thought, as a young lad, how funny he was. He did an Anglia TV dating thing called "Sweethearts" and carried the last episode in absolute floods of tears as he didnt want it to end because "everybody has been so nice to me". This clip shows a sad end to an underated career. God bless you, Larry. Thanks for the laughs
The thing was with dear Larry, when he said "I love you" you felt it, you could feel that he really did care about those he was entertaining. Thank you Larry for the laughs, the warmth and the hospitality you gave us all xxx
Well I wish I had Meet Larry Before he Passed away, any one that did meet him personally is greatly honoured..... RIP Larry you are missed very much... "shut that Cloud"
25 years on you are still very much missed Larry. Hope they have double glazing in heaven. No draughts and door shut (Even though we down here would love it to be open at again) xx
Proper old school camp entertainer Larry, gentle humour (“The draught in ‘ere”) reminiscent of back street sayings back in the 30’s and 40’s and full of innuendo, much like the equally missed Frankie Howard. He loved his audience, and they loved him. Still badly missed after all this time.
I think people forget how hugely popular he was from all walks of life his show generation game attracted 25 million viewers in its hey day!! This appearance was his final gentle farewell like as if he knew it
People critised that last performance be larry was as good as as gracious as ever. He may have been getting on in years but his easy way with the audience shone through. What a true star gone but never forgotten. Thank you laz
A thoroughly consummate entertainer, a lovely man with absolutely no pretentiousness. You're very much missed since, you "Shut That Door" RIP dear Larry.
Unbelievably Funny Who else could make looking at their shoe so funny ! Met him in Summer of 1973 when he broke all records at Winter Gardens Margate. He stayed in a house close to shop where I worked. He came in every day and would chat to everybody for ages. So warm, friendly and genuine
Our Artistic Director Nick Hennegan interviewed him on BRMB Radio in Birmingham a few years ago. He said not only was he a great talent, but a real grafter and a real gent!
I never heard anything but good about Larry, from friends and showbiz people. Bernard Manning said that if you gave him a microphone and a spotlight he'd make you laugh. A pity it took so long for him to hit the big time.
What a lovely, lovely person. A very gentle and naturally funny entertainer who became very much part of everyone's life with all his catch phrases. Shut that door, look at the muck in eer. The draft in eer. The characters. Apricot Lil and the postman, pop it in Pete. The facial expressions and the camp animation. Unforgettable. God bless you Larry. R.I.P.
Shame on the production company behind the recent 2018 ITV3 documentary on Larry, who cited this performance as evidence that Larry had lost his talent and was by now, a tragic has-been. His sparkle and comic timing were as great as ever - what did they want him to do, a back flip over the orchestra pit?! He was 70 for God's sake - I defy any of the TV producers behind that travesty of a programme to captivate an audience as Larry did here in his final months - whatever age they are, they couldn't match him! What an insult to the much loved and sweetly scandal-free Larry Grayson, to allow sleazebag Barrymore to pay tribute. Talk about 'damning with faint praise'. An utter disgrace. RIP dear Larry - one only has to read all the comments here to know that your final TV appearance was not a disaster as that cruddy TV show claimed, but like the rest of your career, a triumph!
I agree. The documentary was totally unfair. Poor old Larry was very unwell then and he did really well. He still had that sparkle but he was struggling with illness
He was brilliant as a TV host and as a act here. He wouldn't have been asked to appear if he was a "has-been", and the audience reaction showed him just how much he was loved as a national treasure
@@trmyerscough Precisely! They made out Larry died on his arse but the audience loved him and all his jokes hit their target. The chair had actually been part of his act from the beginning of his career. Every so often during a performance, he would quickly swap the chair from one side of him to the other and say "let's have a change of scenery", something so simple yet so original and funny is a show of true comic genius. He purchased a Rolls Royce, he had a driver as he never learnt to drive, he had a cruet set in the glove compartment of salt and pepper for his fish and chips on the way home from his gigs … what a talented man
When you can walk onto a stage to rapturous applause without saying a word , you've got everyones hearts.

I’m not gay but he’s harmless, funny and non aggressive. The world needs more of that type of population
@@Baltihunter Totally agree with you 👍🌹

Larry never swore, insulted people and had a genuine warmth, a true entertainer. Todays comedians could learn a lot from the lovely Mr Grayson. RIP
I grew up watching Larry Grayson and always found him comforting and reassuring. A most endearing man.
What a darling man and much missed. He had such a gentle demeanour which added to his comedy. Lovely Larry ...
Speechless...Really can't comment about this one. All I will say is, I started out laughing and ended up crying... January 7th 1995 - What a grey, grey, day!! ♡
the little whisper at the end "i love you"
and we do too.
a truly kind, sincere, lovely man....pity more of todays "talent" don't treat their audience with such regard.
Never to be forgotten, thank you Larry , so glad we have these vids to look back on . 💜🌈💚
Today’s comedy world could take a great lesson from dear Larry. I adore him.
sadly missed can't believe nearly 30 years
He was a lovely man - one of the nicest, most genuine people you could ever hope to meet.
Very sadly missed!
I wish everyone was as lovely as Larry Grayson the world would be a better place !
I just recently discovered the magic of Larry Grayson, who seemed so nice. I will watch more.
I met Larry in Nuneaton while I was doing some presenting work for a major company. I gave him a tea shirt that he liked which thrilled him to pieces. He was one of the nicest celebrities I have ever met. He was so genuine and warm. A comic genuis.

A thoroughly consummate entertainer, a lovely man with absolutely no pretentiousness. You're very much missed since, you "Shut That Door" RIP dear Larry.
This is so bittersweet. This was his final ever performance, meaning his last words on stage were ‘shut that door’. So so lovely.
Funny, genuine, no swearing or insults, beloved by everyone. RIP funny, funny man.
