Growing up gay in the 70's was a bit of a trial!!! There were no positive gay role models. There was John Innman, Keneth Williams, Frankie Howerd - all legends in there own right. However I was unable to identify with any of them. And then came Larry Grayson - just as camp as those mentioned and most of his jokes were double-entendres - but there was something about Larry that was very different to the other 'camp' comics. Although never openly gay on TV (in his private life he was - a rare thing at the time) I felt I could relate to him in some way. Now I am not (and never have been) camp but Larry came across not just as camp but true to him self. Most of his jokes would not seem funny in todays climate - which is a pity. Unlike some comedians of the time, Larry came across as a really nice bloke who's jokes were not at the expense of others. Larry Grayson is imho a much underated performer.
He was a "stage Gay" in my view, at the time he was just called a " poof" , that was the terminology used in the 1970s, that was what he worked on being, inviting the audience to laugh at what a "smutty poof I am".... he presented the notion of making fun of Gays, laughing AT them rather than with them, with himself as the figurehead, I thought he was awful, he and John Inman and "Gloria" from " It Aint Half Hot Mum" , a program that cannot be broadcast anymore because of its racist jokes and Homophobic overtones, they were all the same, he was of his time, TV in the 1970s unashamedly made fun of minority groups but not in a nice way in my view, he was just smutty, .." I wouldn't bend over backwards for a meaty part?.."....." there were feathers everywhere, there must have been a cock fight.... I wish..." Just two examples of his comedy "genius". In the role of a "smutty poof" he succeeded , but he was far from funny in my view. I thought he did the Gay community a disservice , and Im not even Gay myself, but I look at him and I think , fucking hell!! is that how Gay people want to be seen or identify with??
Those were the days when comedians told 'naughty' jokes that all the family could listen to and find something funny in them. Comic genius, with class!
What a wonderfully funny, family entertainer he was. I remember watching him on the Generation Game when I was little. I adored him. Now I understand the innuendos, he’s even funnier. Love the way he says “I love you” at the end - said with such sincerity. We love you too and haven’t forgotten you Larry. RIP. Xx

Apart from how funny and brilliant Larry was in this video I have to say that the man who did the bolas stunt was incredible, such precision and accuracy, really skilful.

What a wonderful comic genius he was. Brave to be so openly gay even though it was hidden in double-entendres. He annoyed some gay people for being a stereotype but I think that was the only form of expressing sexuality that was accepted then when homophobia was widespread. Of all the camp comics of the 70's I think he was the best and had a down to earth and camp humour that still has me laughing today. A lovely and kind man who is sadly missed.

Honestly, I never heard of him. Then he was mentioned on a episode of "Vicar of Dibley". The Vicar said he wss hilarious so, I came lookin for him. She was right he is hilarious. Makes me wonder what else I'm missing. Wish Britbox would add some of the older British shows.
