@@starcloud4959 Duane Allman is one of my favorites. They was a blues jam band when he was alive and when he passed, they changed direction unfortunately. He's up there but as far as improv he's at the top with Hendrix and Miles Davis.
@@erictalkington5674 I think they got back at it in those later years if you hear some of that Derek Trucks/Warren Haynes but obviously there was only one Duane. Those two are devout disciples of Duane's style of improv though and have put their own spin on it with modern technology. Derek in particular is a monster fusion guitarist but specializing in blues, similar to Duane. Warren is all heart and equal parts reggae, funk, soul and real heavy blues, idk who I can compare him to. I guess he's kind of like a white cowboy version of Eddie Hazel on guitar (but not like Bob Weir, although there is still a little bit of Bobby in any guitarist that knows anything) Worth looking into.
This started playing from my mix, and at first everything was normal. Then I was like hey, why so many teasers when wharf came and went and I was like hol up. Sum things delightfully off about this show. And now I fully understand. Genius thanks!
These were the most vital parts of a GD show, where I came to hold converse with God. Back in the day, we remember the Memorex tape ad campaign, the guy sitting in an easy chair with his hair streaming out behind. Well, that's what is was like during the jam portions, and I would stand transfixed, unable to keep up with the music in dance, but still fully present psychically. Tears flowing not down, but back as the band and the crowd coalesced and came thru those mighty speakers and into our mind(s), transporting us instantly anywhere imaginable. In that swirling, towering vortex of limitless energy I learned that the most powerful tool in creation is our own brain, the wellspring of conceive and create. In terms of music education, here is a perfect window, a perfect opportunity to understand the genius the is the grateful dead. growing up the Beatles were automatic and amazing. Bob Dylan and jazz took the study and careful observation. it was rewarding. Music should be spontaneous and intuitive but at first, knowing it will pay off takes a little effort, and once you know what you are hearing, you hear the intelligence and wisdom (in my case, a little peyote and LSD helped) weengreen kinda points out what it is. if your love this you love the dead.
Haha - me, if I never ever hear The Music Never Stopped again I'll be well happy. I can also live happily without all those Franklin's. Gimme the jams on Dark Star, Playin', Eyes, China-Rider, Sunshine, etc,. any day. In fact at my age (--!!) I'm turning precisely to these wonderful Just the Jams combos instead of slogging through full shows and hearing El Paso, Rose, Jed, etc., time and time again. I repeat: age!
just started listening to this and love how you transitioned Playing into estimated. 78 is great. There is something darker, more sinister to the music. crack rocks and envolope filters
Thanks for noticing! I always keep the jams in chronological order, so some transitions work better than others. My main goal is to keep them from being too jarring. Thanks for listening and commenting! @justweiss
yeah great job. I've been on archive.org on a big '78 kick thanks to your mix. very underrated year in my opinion. like I mentioned in my first post I always picked up on a darker vibe in 78. maybe it reflected what was going on personally with the band at the time, maybe not. Either way it definitely worked for the band. Apparently the band wasn't happy with Keith's playing towards the end of his tenure, although with the dead less can be more, especially with keys, and while I love Keith, maybe his more simplistic approach towards the end suited the rest of the band well. Even at his worst I always felt Keith kept the band tight and on time which really allowed Jerry to explore some far out places.
plop888 maybe dark isn't even the most accurate description; a lot of their jams are played in the mixolydian mode which too me isn't quite dark yet not completely happy sounding-like you said kind of mysterious and cryptic in sound. Also I think the effects Jerry was using at the time like his envolope filter and phase shifter, along with Keith's acoustic piano playing helped invoke this bittersweet mood the music conveys.
The only shame I can hear is that Keith is almost completely uninvolved at this point. How nice would it have been to have a healthy piano player to go along/interplay with Jerry while he was still young enough to be healthy?
The band talked about this in interviews. Keith would alltogether duck out at times and other times would just comp along the chords, a far cry from his early days with the band. The band was also frustrated with keith showing little interest in playing anything but piano towards the end. Its a shame because i think keith is very underrated- he had excellent timing and harmonic instincts, which served the rest of the band well since they often took harmonic or rhythmic liberties, he was the glue holding the band together. I also liked how he had some subtly, he never tried to do to much or stepped on anyones toes and fit neatly in the mix
I love it! How about '69 - '71 Jams, when Jerry was really ripping the psychedelic blooze... Envelope filters have their place, but can get tiresome after a while imho...
