How to remove tree sap from lumber for DIY woodworking projects

Some of the wood I bought from a big-box store for a DIY project had tree sap on them. At first I thought I would sand it off, but then decided to try some paint thinner I had. After all, thinners are good solvents. See the result of my experiment here.

Possibly yes, as I mentioned in my blog post: twincivet.com/easy-way-to-remove-tree-sap-resin-from-lumber-for-woodworking. But I made furniture using that piece of wood 2 years ago, and it hasn't come back.
