Why is it so hard for trans people to get healthcare? | Enea Venegoni | TEDxDonauinselSalon

  • Transmasculine TEDx speaker Enea Venegoni shares the surprising challenges of transgender people with having to navigate a healthcare system that is designed to treat heterosexual cisgender patients. Doctors, nurses, and medical systems are neither trained nor used to treating trans patients and this leads to avoidable pain and suffering.
A transmasc person, Enea is a Policy Researcher and writer, with a background in psychology and neuroscience. In their daily life, they work as policy researcher, with a focus on inequalities in care, with the aim to promote evidence-based changes. As a writer, they have been featured on VICE Italy, i-D Italy, and other magazines and independent zines, mainly curating columns on queer culture and issues faced by the LGBTQI+ community, on top of writing informative articles for both the community and the general public in Italy. Their interests are related to equity in global health, research and the use of art as an agent for social-change. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

It’s hard because healthcare is suited to someone’s anatomy and physiology and not only is the “bottom” surgery still wildly experimental and mental health being ignored, but it’s ultimately a battle between being socially correct or “cancelled”. The trans community want to go to their new gender doctors when that’s not what they have going on biologically and these facts are being ignored.

I had seen a shortfilm in India where transgenders are recognized not others of LGBTQA spectrum. They are identified but stil no healthcare!!! There should be healthcare for all. It should be ok for partner to buy insurance for their same gender partner. It should be ok for them to sign their medical papers! Simple step starts from asking them if they want to be attnded by male or female healthcare professionals.

The thing is. As someone training to be a doctor I understand completely where he is coming from, but this is a system that barely trains us in “standard” medicine. Most healthcare systems are on the verge of collapse in Europe and most doctors don’t have the time, knowledge, resources and training to actively train new doctors in these cases. Medicine is genderised quite literally by nature - it has to be, because of biology. Hopefully, a doctor will be compassionate and professional enough to educate themselves when taking on a new patient who happens to be queer.
