That explains Tim’s little chuckle once the car snapped straight, he felt the car sliding and rotating the whole time and it’s actually a really cool feeling when you get it right, as you’ve done here, Robert.
Very informative explanation, so much understanding of your car handling and capabilities. This kind of information could really help someone. Great video Robert as always.

Man, I really appreciate your useful info about driving different layouts of cars properly on track. I find much more interesting your videos instead of some other guy talking about special order stiching on a car. Keep going Robert! :)
It was fun to watch the original video and that little smile you made at the time. It was almost like you were thinking "that should pucker him up a bit". I think its great that Tim lets you beat the crap out of his cars and you guys make a good team. Next time he comes back, you two should shoot a Friday afternoon chat in the garage. Maybe something like "learning the Ring"
What a great explanation of a truly brilliant piece of driving. That Pista is absolutely gorgeous and looks so cool snaking through the turns. Also, looks like you had a lot of fun taking that car near its limit through that section of the track. Tim looks like he enjoyed it too.
Nice technique, Robert, love that you drive those cars at the limit. When I read Derek Seward book and also Caroll Smith, they also said that a nimble setup with little tendency to undesteer while having power-oversteer would be better for lap times.
Amazing how much information came from a few seconds of action. Really appreciate you sharing the knowledge. I think your channel is hitting a much desired niche. Its very unique for a super/hyper car owner to have this level of driving skills, technical knowledge, comprehension to concisely digest and explain, then share on youtube. Thank you very much. I truly appreciate your content.
The techniques you have talked about are really helpful. Even in street driving you can implement some of them. A couple of times I found myself going the speed limit and misjudging the sharpness of a corner. I took my foot off the throttle and the car came around beautifully. Even though it's an fwd estate. The dab of the brake is a good shout too for fwd cars. Really loving the vids.
I loved the stock setup on the early S2000, it was almost perfect for balancing on the tire limit, slight understeer and a little throttle and you could do the subtle crab of being on the limit through a corner.
Absolutely stunning Pista, for starts, one of my favourite specs so far and love that take on how it behaves and how squatted it goes!!! Beautiful job you done on the set up and the fact you really exploring to the max!!! Also... LOVING the tech talk and you are 'teaching' us all with so much feedback about the cars and about the driving dynamics in general, in performance driving!! Keep them coming!! Loving them, loving your channel!
Good Afternoon Robert. Thank You and The Team. The Videos explained a lot about Handling Dynamics and The Mid Engine Pista and Its Current Suspension Settings Always Great to See You Having Fun and An Owner Enjoying A Wonderful Piece of Engineering Art. Oh. How Are Our Favorite Co Pilot Doing ? Wishing Both You and All at Home and Office. Good Health. Cheers Carlyle
Hey Robert! After experiencing the reliability of the Pista, would you consider owning multiple of the newer Ferrari models as they come out instead of the McLarens?
I already feel like I am a much better driver than a couple of minutes ago when the video started- just from listening to Robert speak! Wow. Great job! Also, side note, I have just subscribed. I am really enjoying your content Robert Mitchell!
Hi Robert, I enjoy the way you explain in detail how are a car feels or drives on the most demanding track in the world. Just wondering if you have driven the latest Honda NSX at the Nurburgring? Your in depth analysis of it’s handling would be most interesting. Keep up the great videos. 👍
Great video! I appreciate the depth of your commentary and the replays to illustrate. Would you please consider doing a similar video with the GT2RS? Hearing your thoughts on the rear engine dynamics would be interesting.
Fascinating info, Robert! Just shows how much experience & practice heightens the enjoyment of driving high end performance cars like this Pista! Me, I’d just crash 😩 This is why a taxi lap is so worth the spends! No company more capable of delivering the best track experience then Apex ! Peace ❤️
Hey Robert, thanks for the continued in depth content and your no BS approach. A question for your next Friday segment - What are your thoughts on the Ruf CTR "Yellowbird" video from 1987. It's something I was thinking of when you were talking about on the limit driving. Keep up the good work, keen to visit and attend Apex once they let us Aussies travel again :)
Interesting articulation. Not to contradict but accepting your explanation of the understeer correction prior to engaging rumble strip, a simpler explanation of what occurred at rumble is that there was a change (loss) in surface tension and it manifested in back kicking out at faster rate on rumble than track. You, passenger and car came out unscathed; good driving.
No that’s actually I correct. I think you’re a good couple seconds late in where your assessment begins. the car had understeer mid corner! Not at the rumble strip. I forced it to begin an oversteer out of the understeer 10-15 meters before the rumble strip. The entire rotation began from the apex of the turn. The rumble strip had nothing to do with anything. if you watch the slow motion the rotation starts way before the car is even halfway from the apex to the rumble strip and the advanced rate of rotation started a good 50cm before the rumble strip....
If I may chime in here. I think he does not mean the rumble strip did much to affect the steering/corner speed and direction. What he implies is the back wheels loose tension/grip somewhere mid corner. I wonder why you conclude to need more downforce on the front axle. I think that would only amplify the shown behaviour, if you don't add a Pista Pasta-Theke at the same time.
new sub here just stopping in to say how refreshing it is to enjoy being a 'car guy' after finding your channel Robert, much appreciation eh and my bucket list includes a ride in a Apex Taxi.... bless up and good vibes all around! 8^)
Wow, impressive. Didn't think that the slip angle was that big from the onboard. I love playing around with a car like that, but I'm just driving my MX-5 or rental karts. But see you doing it in a Ferrari Pista... Wow, really impressiv!
Hi Robert, I am driving a R56 Cooper S. I know, I know my car is far from the super cars that you are introducing. But I am really interested to learn how to drive a mini - a short, FF car. You talked about how trail braking help turning the rear. But I found a short FF car like mini really difficult to do because it tends to follow the front a lot. It either oversteer completely out of control, or more often, understeer. I am also having a relatively soft suspension setting and a close to 1.3:1 ratio of front and rear camber.
Driving well explained. I remember sliding a BMW M3 E30 on a test drive. Also did same with Ford Torino and scared the salesman. Drifting wasn't "invented" then.
Had the pista in my mirrors Saturday TF and shmees gt40 I thought you would pass but obviously keeping Tim company , back October hope to get a passenger lap with you in the 620R 😜
Seems like the 488GTB and Pista have soft springs....I've noticed how much of a difference in ride height the 488 GTB's and Pista's have at speed. In your video your Pista looks like it is all the way down, fully compressed springs with a major change in ride height from standstill to full speed int he corner. So with that in mind do you think the car has lost it's suspension and could cause more sliding around/less grip due to fully compressed springs/shocks? Do you think that shorter stiffer springs would help better with lowering the car but keeping the springs from full compression and shocks too and the car would have more grip? I ask this because I have my 1st 488GTB right now but I come from Porsche GT3's with my last one a 2018 GT3. Thanks for the great insightful videos!!!
Great explanations Robert...Could we try a throttle and break camera shot in the split screen laps you do and talk us through the process...loving the journey...the edits....and the content robert👍👍👍👍
What can you do against these twitchy oversteer characteristics? I'm guessing playing with the alignment and in Assetto Corsa I notice the cars behaving like this when the diff doesn't lock fully. Obviously having a longer wheelbase would help, but that's not something that we can / should do. Also would love to see a video on how alignment can change the characteristics of the car. Like more camber at the front giving more front grip, toe-in at the back giving you a more stable ride etc.
I think making the distinction between a drift and slip angle is huge and the 720S is the perfect example of that, people think on the 720S that when you adjust the "drift" mode that its gonna let you drift that wide and you're safe, it will save you. Thats just not true, that setting is the automatic adjustment the car will do to allow you to achieve that degree of slip angle when driving it correctly on the limit. Informative video as usual.
Robert thanks again for these videos. So informative. Would you be able to do similar review of the 718 GTS. I've appreciated the videos you have posted of the drives recently but would like to hear your opinions on the car like you have done for the Pista and GT2RS. Thanks you for considering it.
I really start thinking that Ferrari builds the perfect machines! They can be quite comfortable on the street (according to my limited experience apporx. 800km) and on the same time real track weapons! And you get all of that with great reliability and awesome customer service! I know that some McLaren might be slightly faster but the overall Ferrari package is just incredible! Anyway I'm very jealous about your car park:) Thanks for the great content!
@Robert Mitchell : really excellent explanation of the dynamics of the Pista through that corner. What is the reason that a Porsche GT2/3 has less understeer than the Pista? Weight distribution doesn't seem different, track width doesn't show a difference (+/- 3 cm more width at the front)... Is the understeer you still have in the Pista something you want to/will address with changes to the car? Or is the car well balanced and will changes only make it less effective/joyful to drive?
Great post and explanation Robert. Love the Pista and your review of the alignment changes you did. I have a 488 spider and R8v10, definitely different characteristics between them on the track. I take them to Watkins Glen. Any thoughts on the Pista brakes, say vs the GT2RS? I find that sometimes I have press the brake pedal on the 488 with all my might. Not sure why, doesn’t happen all the time. The R8 has a great initial bite and is always consistent.
Great Video! Do you have a preference on the paddles being mounted on the steering wheel (moves with wheel) or on the steering column (does not move with the steering wheel)?
In the class of 'racing' I participate in with older rear drive cars the most common problem is corner exit terminal over steer. It can be so quick that catching it is beyond amateur reflexes. Perhaps getting it to set early on exit like with the Ferrari here would be better rather than trying to judge when to put the power down on exit and getting it wrong.
Robert, could you please explain rake angle and how you set it up on your cars? Would raising the rear of your 488 by a couple of mm help the under-steer?
Question for friday: why would you buy a r8 rwd or lamborghini huracan rwd instad of the awd? what are the benifits? Edit: you might alrady answered this lol
One plus of rwd vs awd is less power loss through the mechanical resistance Of the extra mass of another powered axle (front tires having power), some people will just say the element of a rwd car is what makes it better. Being able to control understeer is a perk in itself.
Great informative video as always. Slightly unrelated i would be really interested in you guys talking about how you setup your cameras in the cars and what settings you are using. I have a real problem with consistency of footage and you guys seam to nail it :)
With a two pedal car, what are the benefits (and drawbacks) of left-foot braking? Can this technique be used to control the balance between front and rear grip?
I would say the distinction between a "power slide" or "4 wheel drift" versus "drifting" is when the front wheels are mostly neutral through the apex versus in significant counter steer through the apex. But yes, more technically it is the slip angle involved and thus the "track" through the corner which is different whether "normal driving", maximum performance, or drifting that distinguishes drifting from the others.
Interesting video, I kinda guessed the outcome before you got to it 😉 just curious though.. Are we not having more snap oversteer moments with today's cars, simply because they are overpowered compared to the traction available from their set up / tyres? I imagine you only need over throttle by a very small degree to initiate snap oversteer on exit? Especially when you also take into account the way Ferrari synthetically integrates a bit of "fun" into proceedings, too? I kinda prefer the pre-458 Ferraris when you had to work a little to initiate oversteer, occasionally some unplanned oversteer and then you had to work to tame it. That, to me, is the essence of what driving a Ferrari should be - a challenge.
If you were drifting would of rotated more and a much longer period of slide. Really like the way that you are able to brake down every point of what you are doing and the different techniques that you would use for another of your car's. My question is with just the rotation and not the power slide could you be faster?
Not sure if you've covered this or not, but I'd like to hear where you started at. Did you start in the Canyons of SoCal? At a track? What was your the first car you tracked? Driving school? Its always awesome, for me anyway, to hear where people began and progressed to where they are now.
What a car ! You lucky you :) I'm sad... I have a ride scheduled on thursday with the GT2RS and thursday is a rainy day ! I chose one of the only rainy days of the week. What a lucky man I am ! Hahahaha ! I know that Robert told me that the experience on a rainy day with Tim is a "once in a life experience", but I wanted to experience the ultimate grip, the brutal braking and the G force etc... anyways, I'm confident Robert knows what he's talking about... and that indeed will be a wonderful experience... My next ride would be in a McLaren, but I wait for the right model... not sure about the 620R though... i'm waiting to see Robert's first test to decide... But McLaren is high on my list...
Just by watching the video.. It looks like the gearshift, together with the weight pusing from the back (downhill) caused the oversteer! (oversteer started just before the rumble strips) Now gonna watch what you have to say Robert!
@@RobertMitchell i guess the weight from the back helped with the power oversteer, but i didn't notice the car was already rotating before the gearshift. Love your videos!
If i am not mistaken some cars even let you do a minor tire slip like that (or a bit less) without interferring with the traction control or stability control.
Hey Robert are you looking at the SF90 Stradale as a possible car? It should be faster then even the GT2RS and possibly close to Senna levels for far less money.
A little past slip angle. No big deal, but awesome to see it being driven properly. Not many Pista owners will even know what slip angle is or ever even get close to it.

Question for friday:
why would you buy a r8 rwd or lamborghini huracan rwd instad of the awd? what are the benifits?
Edit: you might alrady answered this lol
I think that you don't need the awd on the Nordschleife. Furthermore, the rwd version is lighter and more agile to drive (sry for my bad English)
@@niklastp09 Your bad English is better than some people's English, English.
"Donuts"
One plus of rwd vs awd is less power loss through the mechanical resistance Of the extra mass of another powered axle (front tires having power), some people will just say the element of a rwd car is what makes it better. Being able to control understeer is a perk in itself.

Really liking the videos lately. Looking forward to more of the 620R. Seems similar to the senna as a concept.
I would have thought the main benefit is being able to get back on the throttle quicker if your right foot is always hovering above it
I would say the distinction between a "power slide" or "4 wheel drift" versus "drifting" is when the front wheels are mostly neutral through the apex versus in significant counter steer through the apex.
But yes, more technically it is the slip angle involved and thus the "track" through the corner which is different whether "normal driving", maximum performance, or drifting that distinguishes drifting from the others.
Yes that is a very good way to describe the difference between the two! I like it
Interesting video, I kinda guessed the outcome before you got to it 😉 just curious though..
This has a lot to do with why the traction control is SO sensitive on the car
The slow motion images make a lot clear.
If you were drifting would of rotated more and a much longer period of slide. Really like the way that you are able to brake down every point of what you are doing and the different techniques that you would use for another of your car's. My question is with just the rotation and not the power slide could you be faster?
I’m sure it would have been a bit faster w/o the slide yes. Towards the end there was a bit of speed lost
Another great informative video! Love the Pista(imho one of the spec I've seen) and love your explanations! Keep up the good work!
As you owned both have them would like to hear the difference between the pista and the speciale on the limit and how it behaves on the nurburgring.
For me, the 488 PISTA is the best car ever!
Love Adenau, good view of the track, burger and beer too 😊😘
for the blitz: do you enjoy driving the ring more when it is wet or dry? And what do you believe makes sb to learn the ring quicker?
Not sure if you've covered this or not, but I'd like to hear where you started at. Did you start in the Canyons of SoCal? At a track? What was your the first car you tracked? Driving school? Its always awesome, for me anyway, to hear where people began and progressed to where they are now.
This Slowmotion😍
Robert .. would you mind doing a side channel of current affairs? It’s so refreshing a truthful opinion in our current climate. Superb vlogs buddy.
What a car ! You lucky you :)
I'm sad...
How does a Schirmer V8 drive on the Autobahn? Does it have any usability outside of the track like for a backroads type of car?
Just by watching the video.. It looks like the gearshift, together with the weight pusing from the back (downhill) caused the oversteer! (oversteer started just before the rumble strips) Now gonna watch what you have to say Robert!
What did you see after watching?
@@RobertMitchell i guess the weight from the back helped with the power oversteer, but i didn't notice the car was already rotating before the gearshift. Love your videos!
If i am not mistaken some cars even let you do a minor tire slip like that (or a bit less) without interferring with the traction control or stability control.
PSM does so for example
Hey Robert are you looking at the SF90 Stradale as a possible car? It should be faster then even the GT2RS and possibly close to Senna levels for far less money.
A little past slip angle. No big deal, but awesome to see it being driven properly. Not many Pista owners will even know what slip angle is or ever even get close to it.
