    Hi Nick I got into the shou sugi ban thing about 3 months ago and deep burn everything. It's way more eye candy than the light burn. Up until I heard about the Keda dyes I just used plain old Tremclad rust paint thinned 50%. Personally other than the major wiping when using Tremclad I prefer the final result over the Keda. I'm not knocking Keda at all. I used the Keda blue on a table which looks absolutely great. With the Tremclad one coat is all you need but like I said it has to be rubbed out. The best one I did was when I used Tremclad aluminum. It's just not a colour you'd expect to see on wood is probably the reason. Great videos Nick. I've learned a lot from them

    I recently bought 10 bottles of unicorn spit (it ain’t cheap) so I’m going to experiment with that first. The colors are crazy cool as are some of the online ideas. I loved watching you burn the wood first though so that just entered my plans. I hate watching “dry” instructors so thanks so much for the entertaining lesson.

      Keda does not make a white dye. I'm not sure why. It might have to do with the ingredients he uses? The dyes are eco friendly and don't have the odor that stain does.

    I think the reason the Keda dye seems to take better is because it's solvent based vs water based like the RIT and Unicorn Spit. I'm not terribly well versed in these products so I might be wrong.

  • @ericmeyn4380

    Love your videos. Building a wedding arch for my son and his wife. Going to use this technique. Initial experiments going well. One question, if you're still answering them: The arch is made of box beams (1x6 boards built into a square tube) that are sectioned in 4 foot lengths. They are constructed using tongue and groove and will be glued up. I feel like I will need to build the box beam sections before I do the burning in order to get a consistent burn and to prevent issues fitting it together due to warping or other changes to dimensions from the heat. Any suggestions on this?

    • @BuildDadBuild
      @BuildDadBuild  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Definitely build them first. Tongue and groove can get all messed up during the burn as the tongues are thinner stock and can become brittle.
      I'd say glue the hell out of it and make sure to take quick passes with the torch. That way you won't make the glue bonds fail. Also if you can get a couple of metal L-brackets inside the beam, it might be a good idea.
      Also keep an eye on your end-grain. Heat tends to make the boards cup the way the C of the end-grain is going. Make sure to burn the opposite side to mitigate cupping.
      Cheers

    • @ericmeyn4380
      @ericmeyn4380 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@BuildDadBuild Great info. Definitely going to glue like crazy with Gorilla Glue. I will have box splices inside the box beams (to splice the 4' sections into 8' box beams) so that should take the place of L-brackets. They will be glued and screwed in. I don't think I'm going to mess with the end grain other than maybe a quick surface pass to darken it. It doesn't really show on the arch the way it's set up. When you say "Make sure to burn the opposite side..." you don't mean the inside of the box beam, do you? There's no way to get inside the beam and do that safely. Finally, is there a way to send a picture? Grasshopper would love to show off his test piece to the master. LOL (P.S. Saw the smoked whiskey video and that's on the agenda as a project with son when he gets back from "places".)

(Keda Wood Dye. I accidentally addressed you as "Dan". Sorry about that!) So I went to work rebuilding an antique park bench, the wrought iron frame for which I found at a thrift store years ago. Apparently, the wood planks had rotted for they were long gone; only the wrought iron frame, in four pieces, remained with a few of the original screws and bolts still fastened to them. I think to get maximum color saturation you need to water the sapling with water that has been dyed. In 50 years you can harvest,mill, burn and done. Easy!

    Hey man, is the Keda dye difficult to get hold of? Can't find it in the UK, and Amazon don't seem to have it either. Great channel by the way. My 10 year old daughter thinks you're very funny #legend! I love "coffee" too man.

    hey man, love what your doin...i have an experiment i've been curious about since i got into shou sugi ban,and figure it would be quick and easy for you....what would happen if you dyed the wood first, then burned it? like heat lock the dye in? you could do a surface light burn and also and deep one and brush it out...you pickin up what im droppin brotha? im thinking it could yield some interesting effects...or go absolutely nowhere let me know what you think.... regardless you got yourself a new sub..later

    • @BuildDadBuild
      @BuildDadBuild  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I did that in a previous video. The dye doesn't penetrate deep enough and when you burn the dye comes off with the brush.
