In my head i see him as the perfect blend of Ben white and Zinchenko. He has solid defensive abilities like white and can play full back or centre back like white. However, he has the technical ability to come inside like Zinchenko. Although white can come inside and play inverted, i do think he lacks that bit of skill, quick pace, or a difficult pass to work as well inverted as Zinchenko does. He definitely doesnt transition play or make things happen as well as zinchenko does. But on the other hand, Zinchenko is a liability defensively. i am hoping Timber wont be that defesnive liability and will be able to balance the playmaking and transitioning as an inverted full back and the defensive duties as a RB or LB. But obviously, as you said, we havent seen enough of him in the premier league so its hard to know the exact role he will play.

Great analysis. It’s about having options for different game states. Against low blocks can see Arteta possibly even playing timber in the John stones type role to really overload midfields. Can see zini being more of a bench player to change things up a level when needed. Exciting times

Timber best role probably can be seen used by Inter Milan right now. Inter plays with 3 at the back with sides CB Bastoni and Darmian will carry the ball or overlapped from their respective side at the back to create the extra man on the attack. Inter is dominating the Serie A right now.

Stone/Akanji create extra man in the midfield box but Inter CB overlapped the sides for triangle. Their wingbacks push high like wingers near their strikers to create 3-3-4 likes and CB push forwards to create a triangle on their sides and suddenly its like a 2-4-4 with opposite CB stays back with last man De Vrij.

Great post. Yeah, we need to look at versatility, not just in starting position but ability to play multiple positions/roles within the same match, half and even phase. Havertz & Timber are Arteta signings, reminds me of the Ajax “total football” in the 80s: they can play almost anywhere
People need to be patient and can't expect anything from timber this season. needs a couple of months to get back to sharpness not to mention integrating with a new team.

His progression of the ball was also seemingly effortless when watching him play for Ajax... Arteta's really focusing on those multi role players and works them to really shine.
Look at Declan Rice he's been class for a long time but now we are starting to see his legitimate potential come through as he's being asked to perform different roles within the team and match to match.
I'm really excited to see how they decide to utilise Timber when he's back to full fitness as he really is a game changing player. 👍

His numbers look like they would shine very brightly within our squad with his abilities on and off the ball.
I think when Timber returns we could be seeing a more dynamic and free flowing Arsenal side with Timber taking a LB role similar to Ben White on the RB.
Having them swap from inverting/overlapping, filling in for the back three while one is higher in a DM double pivot can lead to more freedom on each side of the pitch. It could allow us to build up with clarity on both sides of the field like we do on the right side and allows for a bit more strength in transition.
Timber may not have as much physical qualities as kiwior, or the attacking flair zinchenko does, but I think he has much more dynamism and fills the perfect blend of those two for our side week in week out. Depending on the game state we can sub on kiwior for more control and Zinny for more offensive prowess and space control.
I can’t wait for what’s possible when Timber returns, we’ll have ourselves a new signing once he’s back on the pitch and I can’t wait to see what Mikel can do

Timber coming back into the team for the run-in and being our secret tactical weapon to win us the title would be an absolute dream. After what happened to Bellerin, Walcott and how stop-start Jesus has currently been after such a big injury though, I also think it would be a massive mistake.
IMO, would be better if we err on the side of caution and wrote off his availability completely for this season to minimise any setbacks that may occur.

Nobody should be thinking that Timber will directly replace any single 1 player in our defensive line. Timber is clearly signed for tactical flexibility. TDK highlighted it very well in this video. Timber being there allows Arteta and even the team themselves to switch inversions in game, left or right, supplementing Zinchenko, White, Kiwior, Tomi. We've been too reliant on a leftback inversions last and early this season. Now that Benny can do an inversion from the right, it confirms that Arteta's final vision is a completely interchangeable inversion system depending on the minute to minute gamestate. Timber is for ultimate flexibility, but this will be something Arteta will expect all his Fullbacks to be able to do from their preferred position.
In other words, expect Zinny, White, Tomi, Kiwior to still get game time next season depending on gamestate. The player that cant adapt to this eventual system most will be the one benched most.

It would certainly be unrealistic to assume he will just walk back into the side. It will take time and a gradual reintroduction until he can return to match fitness. Besides that, Kiwior has done a brilliant job for us and would not deserve to simply be replaced until such time as we can be certain Timber is fully back and firing on all cylinders. We also have Zinchenko and Tomiyasu to consider as well, that's a lot of serious competition for that left hand side, with each providing us with a different set of skills.

As long as Partey, Zinchenko, Tomiyasu and Jesus stay fit I think we have a good shot at the title. Timber maybe in late April would be nice to see for a moral boost.

I hope to see us now selling Zinchenko this summer, because unless we are using him in midfield we have no use for him at left-back; and going after Jeremie Frimpong then makes sense because we can have the best attacking fullbacks in the world with Timber on the opposite flank

Doesn’t matter how quick he recovers. He will always have a problem now with his knee. He won’t ever be able to move the same and any impact there will cause possibly further injury. Also, it will take years for him to fully recover. I had the same injury and I could not run on hard surfaces for nearly 10 years without pain. I can now for a significant amount of time. So, he might recover and be able to play but honestly unless there is a miracle don’t get your hopes up on this guy. I hate to say that because he looked so impressive. I hope he proves me wrong.
I get the seriousness of an ACL injury but these professional footballers are enjoying the treatment from the best physiotherapists day in day out, which most of us cannot afford. That being said, we shouldn’t rush him back to protect him in the long run.
