Absolutely captivating. I didn’t realize other organists do this. Msybe 10 to 20 minutes, but a whole hour??? Thank you for sharing your inspiring talent. BC
Matt, thanks for an absolutely outstanding performance. I feel that many people today young and old do not understand what it takes to master an instrument like the pipe organ and its many voices and the registration involved in bringing it to life. You have given us this improvisation and in its full definition "the art or act of improvising, or of composing, uttering, executing, or arranging anything without previous preparation, musical improvisation involves imagination and creativity, something improvised" and you have certainly delivered! I felt fully captured throughout and in left me in a reflective mood about many of my own personal issues and thoughts. Thanks for this extended performance and sharing your talent.
You are a very gifted organist I.M.H.O. Really enjoyed listening to this session. A tour of the organ would be great and also another camera if you have one on the Pedal Organ mixed in with the Keyboards as appropriate. You play with such enthusiam and feeling. There are only a handful of really good organists on TH-cam. You are most certainly one of them. Keep well. James.
Very well done! The phrasing and explorations you used, coupled with great tonal palates, took my heart and soul to places of peace, beauty and mystery. You have incredible gifts and thank you for continuing to share them with us as often as you do!👏👏👏🫶👍
This is absolutely an hour of absolute mind blowing listening pleasure.... Your passion and skill are next level and I really enjoyed listening to your musical talent.
Absolutely wonderful and if there was anyone sitting in the pews listening to you, lucky them! Thank you for this moment in time of pure magic where I lost myself between the notes....
Excellent! BTW, I don't know any pipe organs that are 100% in tune. I realize it might be tough to hear out of tune stops, but in reality, few instruments are ever in tune, especially when you want them to be. Regardless, a very fine job. Wish I could be there to hear your upcoming performance. Since I am "across the pond" that's not likely to happen. A brief story: My absolute first performance, I cut loose on a Tocatta on St. Anne. I pushed the instrument to its limits. Afterwards, a little lady came by and stated "I didn't know that instrument could sound like that!" To this day, I have accepted that as a compliment. Then, I realized that statement could have a double meaning. Never phased me. I never have changed the way I perform. Just keep on playing your best. You will go far. -Bob
Some strong thematic material here and clearly a well-developed grasp of harmony is evident as you explore the full gamut of colour and expression that the organ is capable of. Also evident is a clear sense of conviction and confidence that you have something to say and project to the listener - essential for any improviser. However, an hour-long single movement even in the written organ repertoire by the masters is essentially unheard of and quite a stretch for any listener. Why not consider therefore capitalising even further on the good things found in this material by breaking it down into distinct movements of far shorter length, each with its own character and form, and developing a theme in a systematic way, rather than what is essentially a string of mostly unrelated episodes. The great improvisers do this, for example in the form of a suite or a series of variations on a defined theme. In this way, the music becomes much more focussed and structurally coherent, and something that can be more readily absorbed and accessed by the listener. You clearly have considerable flair in this area and many would look forward to hearing more recordings, particularly if you can channel your creativity in some of the ways suggested.
I love improvising on the organ because of the variety of different timbres you can get from different combinations of stops. Any chance we may get a video of a tour of the organ? Are all of the divisions enclosed... It looks like it but I can't tell if the crescendo pedals on the right of you (Treble of the manuals) are cresecendo pedals or blanks!!
Brilliant Matt. Your universal talents makes me feel so inadequate. I hero worship you so much that i showed my barber one of your videos and asked him if he could cut my hair like yours. He said he could, if i had hair on the top of my head!😂 Unless I've missed it, will you play 'Praise to the holiest', words by Cardinal Newman and the musical setting of Sir Richard Runciman Terry. Hymn No. 254, The Downside Hymn Book, Tune is called Billing (for some reason!) PS. Are you Trinity College, like your father? Thanks mate, or should I show you respect and call you Mr Walters !?

Such incredible talent. Lovely to see so many young organists flourishing these days and bringing the pipe organ to life again.

Wow. An hour of improvisation on the organ. I need to try this too.
Absolutely beautiful. Thank you for making my study time better.
Amazing 🙏
La musique et le garçon sont beaux.
Fantastic!
OUTSTANDING Matt!! Thank you.

If, as it seems, they are closing the monastery, what happens to the basilica church and its organ?
👋👋👋❤
Hi
The upperwork and reeds sound woefully out of tune. I only lasted to 4:20.
Horrible i got to only 1:01. That's what you get for an extension organ. I wouldn't have posted this.
Typical stodgy, congested, rasping British organ: ghastly!
You are to be pitied not scorned 😢
