Tip from a seamstress ( love your videos! ) lay the garment out flat and then cut up the seam on the side. Following with cutting off the black strip below the hemline so that it doesn’t fray and still keeps it’s shape. 😅 Anything cuts easier when laid flat. And make sure those scissors are sharp❤
And pleeease don’t hunt me for this. But when I’m lazy ( and it’s my own clothes) I use a stapler with the shiny part inside and the teeth outside to secure the hem🙃

I love illusion hems but yeah it really didn’t work with that style, it did look just out of place. Much better without, and the trim you cut off could maybe become a cute sash belt for a plain dress or something, even matching sleeve cuffs if there’s enough for it. Very cute final look

I went out and bought myself two dresses for my birthday. One wasnt super cute, and I showed my friend. We were not convinced. I did feel like I was breaking the law, cutting up a $130 dress I bought an hour earlier, even though I got it for $35. Lol.
It was something business used to do to “save mileage” on the expensive fabric so they’d patch it with the cheaper fabric. It makes clothes look cheap or old fashioned to prudes who care about that sort of thing

Pretty dress with and without the strip. Would putting the belt on (b4 cutting) have mimicked the black stripe of fabric, therefore giving balance? I learn so much from watching your videos.
I hated the mesh too, a perfect way to immediately make the wearer look shorter, and trust me on that as someone who stopped growing at 5. 3". I did like the original length, it might have been possible to keep at least some of the length if you sewed the strip of patterned fabric at the bottom. Might require messing with seams so it fits right though.
Final outfit is stunning!! did you keep the bottom band? that gold and black tapestry fabric looks like it could be turned into a headband or belt (with suitable buckle, of course).

I suggest very careful hand hemming, with the use of some black satin-y or lace (it stretches) hem tape. Be sure to hem a little loosely to allow for elasticity.
I liked the dress as is, but I also understand the need to personalize it. I loved the finished look. Although, I could feel myself tugging and fixing the belt constantly, so I'd just wear it on the dress only. Looks great!
To be honest I dislike front only printed dresses, if the back wasn't black I'd cut the band off, but that band makes the black back look less harsh and cheap ♡
I take if back you added so much all black you don't even notice the glaring contrast in the dress like when it's just a dress, beautiful end outfit! ♡
I liked the original dress just fine. It also looked good on her. I would have paired it with black pumps, a small purse, statements earrings and a shawl (in case I felt a chill in the air). I hate when clothing companies are making cheap product by only embellishing the front of a clothing item. I like that you hid the plain black back by adding the long jacket.
A BIG part of the reason this is done is so that you don't ruin the garment when you do things like sitting. 👌 Same reason studded skirts only have studs in the front.
@BlueEyedBatman I've seen plenty of dresses embellished all the way around, you just learn to sit gently, not like a wild animal. Well- made clothes used to always continue the pattern in back.

I mean, the idea isn't to roll it up initially. That was very clearly an after thought with "Oh, it looks better, but I don't like the length for tonight." The "for tonight" is important because she may like that new length pre-rolling for other evenings and events. Knowing "This window doesn't look good to me period." doesn't prevent her from later knowing "This length is good, but not for tonight's dinner."

The original piece was gorgeous!!!! Even after the cut the dress looked very nice before it was folded shorter and the belt was added. The belt is overkill. The underlayer, the dress, tights and overlay with the boots and earrings were perfect!
I like the final outfit but I think the original uncut dress looked super nice and the length and fitting it was at. The black stripe didn't look ideal but it was dismissible.

In the end, we can voice our approval or disapproval all we’d like, but she’s the one who’s actually gonna wear it. As long as she’s happy with it, then why no make the alterations?

The original piece was gorgeous!!!! Even after the cut the dress looked very nice before it was folded shorter and the belt was added. The belt is overkill.
The underlayer, the dress, tights and overlay with the boots and earrings were perfect!

I like the final outfit but I think the original uncut dress looked super nice and the length and fitting it was at. The black stripe didn't look ideal but it was dismissible.
