      Good advice for newbies. I'm so used to this kind of travel at this point I basically know just from lifting my pack if I'm going to find it annoying or not (also, as 1 who regularly lugs groceries home in a pack, including 4 flights of stairs, I usually find my travel backpack is lighter than that - clothes weigh a lot less than canned food etc). But if in doubt I can just lug it downstairs and back up again

      Thanks Paula for watching, it’s so true though! And, in the worst case, you can always buy something (in most places) if you need. There are too many “what ifs” and having less vs. more makes such a difference!

  • @joane24

    Instead of jeans (unless the one I'm wearing), I noticed it's useful to pack a comfortable dress/skirt and tights. Much lighter and smaller to carry, and very versatile in terms of weather (one could choose between the thin tights or thicker and warmer, or adding additional layer of leggings or something if very cold). It's also cheaper to buy a pair of tights or leggins when needed for whatever reason, much easier than a new pair of trousers:) I also don't mind wearing dress/skirt with sneakers, I mean that also depends of the style of the dress, but the daily casual ones are ok.

    • @joane24
      @joane24 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      And obviously, I wouldn't use the nicer dresses for summer, just cheaper casual stuff, or like basic cotton skirts or something. I just layer with tights and leggings for the weather if colder.

    • @HiKatherine
      @HiKatherine  ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Agreed, love doing skirts/dresses with tights! As you say, skirts tend to be lighter (and smaller to pack) and with dresses, it also eliminated the need for having a shirt, etc... I'm with you on this one! Great explanation 😊

    • @susie9893
      @susie9893 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Totally with you hon and this is definitely my preference for shoulder seasons, where you need to be prepared for any kind of weather.
      And I decided to apply this principle to my wardrobe at home too, cos it totally extends the wear time (in terms of seasons) of my warm weather clothes
      (I even have clothes I can wear comfortably as dresses until the temp gets well over 30°C but can layer under and over to wear as tunics when it's below freezing)

    12:14 This is honestly probably the most universal and helpful tip. I am an over-packer, and I know it’s because I’m also a last-minute packer. As you said, it’s important to not overthink TOO much when deciding what to bring, but it’s also key to give yourself time to really reflect on how what you’re bringing will work for your itinerary and not force yourself into panic-packing mode where you just bring everything because there’s no time to really think and decide.
    That being said, travel since 2020 has been causing me a lot of anxiety, personally, and having certain “normal” things with me (like my everyday electric toothbrush instead of a travel-size one, an extra option for perfume or lotion if possible, etc.) really helps alleviate some of that. I think it’s important to discern what will bring value/comfort/ease to your travel experience without canceling out that value/comfort/ease by adding so much bulk to your luggage (and again, it’s hard to do that discerning when you’re packing at the last minute 🙃).
    Re: toiletries: maybe I missed it somewhere but … sunscreen? … floss? Sunscreen (for my face) is always the first thing I pack as it’s something that I probably can’t (or would prefer not to) “just buy” somewhere. 😅

    • @HiKatherine
      @HiKatherine  ปีที่แล้ว +8

      I agree, while it didn’t immediately come to mind when I was trying to articulate the “how” I do it, when it finally did… it hit me. That really is how I pack and it’s what makes the difference between packing right vs packing for anything and everything! Being intentional is overall a good rule for life, same for packing!
      I agree on the comfort aspect, as long as you don’t bring everything and the kitchen sink, you’re fine 😊
      As for toiletries - literally the morning we left I realized I had forgotten to pack it 😑 so added to my bag last minute… I’m the same way. Sunscreen always AND a very specific one as my skin is sensitive and so agreed, I wouldn’t like buying that just anywhere either. As for floss, guilty🫣 and embarrassed to admit I don’t pack it on trips 😬 We’re not here to judge, right??? 😅

      I would wear a small purse with a backpack. That way Id always have my smartphone/wallet/documents on me when eg going to the toilet or somewhere without the need to carry the whole backpack with me. Also, an easy access whenever needed and safer with pickpocketing:)

    For domestic trips (assuming the weather is the same where you are going), you can always pile up your laundry for a week, then when you wash and dry it, put it all in the clean hamper. Pick your clothing for your trip from that pile. Those are the items you are likely to wear most, and you can choose most of your clothing from that clean laundry pile. That way you don’t forget to bring your favourite clothing. Then fill in the missing items from there (e.g. a nice dress, sandals, etc.)

      I like making lists too. WELL in advance. I consider all the activities I'll be doing then all the clothes I need for them, then think about if there are overlaps where I can minimise choices. Then it becomes a fun (for me anyway) little problem solving activity I can work on here and there when I have a minute

    Back pack all the way.
    My partner and I (68 and 55) were in Venice. He had a roller bag and a daypack. I had a 28l plus a canvas tote. (Reworked my plan off that overpack)
    I handled the stairs better than he did, even with too much weight for comfort.
    I backpacked in 1990, I’ll backpack as long as I can carry one and walk. So hopefully 2054.

  • @Nerd502
    @Nerd502 ปีที่แล้ว +14

    I think type of backpack is also really important. I have the exact same bag (down to the color) and took it for a 5 day trip to visit a friend in Atlanta. I still had a good amount of room at the top and didn’t have to wash anything.
    The shape of the 17 inch Kanken really allows you to make use of the corners of the bag. Most packing cubes and toiletry bags are rectangular. It’s a lot easier to fit those into corners that are not completely rounded!

  • @crazy4beatles
    @crazy4beatles 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

    Goes against the grain but I think your bulkiest pieces should fit in the bag. I would specify this is for when you’re staying at more than one place or traveling to multiple locations. Example, I’m checking out and still have activities that day. I don’t want to HAVE to wear the bigger jacket and shoes all day long because they don’t fit in the bag. This is especially true if you’re going to be straddling different climates like going to Scotland and continental Europe in the summer. I don’t want to have to wear the rain coat and waterproof hiking shoes on my last day in Greece or Spain where it might be very hot and very sunny.

  • @amywilliams1617

    Definitely team backpack. I took a 17 liter backpack for 2 weeks in Europe last month...I didn't miss anything. Just washed a few times in the sink and had a travel clothes line...no big deal. This backpack stays packed as my "go bag" as I live far out of town. I have a water bottle with a filter so we can drink water anywhere. I have my wallet on a string with my phone able to be attached so that can be on my front for safety (I do lock my backpack zippers). 3 bottoms (lightly lined travel leggings/dark wash jeans/hiking pants which are light), 4 lightweight but LS layering tops, responsible cashmere cardigan and scarf (black is dressier), packable puff jacket (not down) with hood (black), packable rain coat (black), minimal toiletries (mostly solids) and makeup, bathing suit, sun hat, undies/socks/1 bra...all in a compression packing cube. I don't take extra shoes but I could...I wear black sneakers everywhere. I have longer hair so I can braid it wet and it will "crimp" by the next day if I want it "fancy". I do bring an adapter for my phone...no laptop unless I'm going for work. I look cute, am comfortable and love the ease of this travel lifestyle. Thanks for posting.

    I’ve seen a few videos about people packing light in a backpack but yours is the most practical. I don’t mind suitcase if visiting family but for city trips or lots of commute definitely team backpack.
    My most used pack is a daily pack from Osprey (Flare, 22L) which is great when commuting to work, but alas not so versatile so I am in search of a new pack.
    One thing though I find useful is to lay out everything you (truly) need, then buy your pack accordingly. Also, if you don’t pack in advance have a list of your essentials so you can pick on automatic everything you need and check every item.

    My go-to bag is an international carryon size fabric bag with wheels. It weighs 1.9 kg empty. I try to keep my total bag weight to around 8 kg when fully packed because I know at this weight I can manage my own bag, ie go up and down flights of stairs, on and off trains etc. I used to have a backpack but I have a scoliosis and other back issues and am 59 so I decided to graduate to a bag. Is it an upgrade? For me, with my back, yes I think it’s worth using a bag. Keeping my bag weight down gives me flexibility and freedom to not be totally bogged down by my bag. Sometimes I check my bags but since the pandemic and with airlines losing bags I have travelled carryon for two and a half months (including meeting Qantas/Australian weight requirements of 7 kg). I know how to pack light and decant all my products and keep other “stuff” in my bag to a minimum.

    love it. I do prefer just a backpack for most trips too. Making a packing list prevents me from overpacking. For me what's missing is maybe sleepwear + sleepmask, (depending on the kind of trip swimwear + sunscreen) and workout clothes (don't need extra shoes for that though). Plus I always like to bring something to write, a water bottle (empty for flights), tissues, a foldable bag and sometimes a book, magazin and/or some mini board or card games for non digital entertainment. :)
    Edit: I can really recommend a stain remover pen. They fit into every purse and you need less clothes, since you can remove a little spot, in case you spilled something.

Using a carry-on backpack recently saved me from missing a flight this past December when ice storms shut down numerous major airlines on the east coast. Had I brought luggage I would’ve missed my return flight and possibly been delayed/stranded several days at the airport.

      I think this depends on the length of the trip and taking into consideration the weather. Sounds like your footwear choice was just being ill prepared?
      IMO taking more than 1 pair of shoes for just a few days is overkill (although sometimes I'll squeeze in a pair of those foldable ballet flats if I think I'm going to need to be a tad more dressy, with the added bonus they double as slippers if the floor is a little old at your accommodation)

    I keep a list that I consult before each trip. Takes a lot of anxiety out of worrying whether I’ve forgotten to pack something important, I just need to pick clothes. You can wear clothes more than once, air out by a window between wears if you can. Just returned from 8 days away & packed 2 summer dresses, a cardigan & a light rain jacket, a bra, a pair of knickers, easy to wash through using shampoo & I wore too, a top, leggings, comfy shoes. I use à cPAP machine at night so HAVE to take that, takes up about a third of my backpack with the tubes & power pack.

      Have you tried Vivaia? I just recently bought a pair of their shoes and they are SOOO comfortable. They are made from recycled plastic in a weave that is stretchy and moulds around your feet, making for a magical fit. Being that they are recycled plastic, they are fine with getting wet and dry out fast, unlike leather or cotton/canvas respectively. They are also washable, so if they got dirty you just remove the insoles and throw them in the washing machine! They come with removable insoles made of yoga mat material. I find these enough but if you needed even more support you could replace the insole with orthotics. I can walk an entire day in them without pain. Since they mould around your feet, less chance of bisters or feet moving around inside them. Haven’t tried hiking in them lol, but for almost everything else (except sports!), they are incredible. And they are SUPER lightweight. There’s even a set of shoes made lighter specifically for travel, though those aren’t the ones I bought. I find them dressy enough to go with a dress for evenings out and yet casual enough to wear with daywear when out and about. If you wanted to tizz them up a bit, shoe clips can really transform them! I just went with a ballet flat with pointed toe in a neutral skin-like colour that goes with everything. Have not regretted it a single day since!! 😂💖
      Hope you find something that works for you… 🤗😘😇

      Hi Annie, so technically the "3-1" (3oz / 100ml) is there... sizing wise, everything fits the category. You're right, I don't show here everything packing into it's "1" quart bag. It's true I'm not the greatest at that, here in EU they don't usually enforce or really care about the plastic bag (at least in our experience), as long as your items are sized correctly (3oz / 100ml) and grouped together in a toiletry bag. That said, I was telling another person that in the US we definitely use the bags, as it is indeed enforced and well, don't want to be that person who holds up the line! 😅 Also, a lot of our weekend trips here in Europe include the train, which doesn't follow the rules so take it with a grain of salt and indeed, if traveling in a situation with 3-1-1 requirements, do follow!

    Hello! Really like this video and would love to see how you would pack for winter trip to US city. Long weekend is fine, although my goal is a bit more challenging as we are travelling late Feb, DC & Cincinnati, two weeks. So cold chilly, maybe snow or maybe rain. And I want to look nice, not like a backpacker.
    I am figuring mix and match clothes vs outfits, so that I can bring smaller amount, but combine them differently. As it is international, we can bring a purse/cross body for extra space. So... I think I will be ok, but am curious how you would pack, because you seem to have done it! Thank you in advance, Lynne

    • @HiKatherine
      @HiKatherine  ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Hi Lynne, great question…! We did a rainy/snowy Copenhagen a few years back and reminds me of this. So first, wear the bulk. Wear your boots (if you want to bring boots), wear your bigger wool coat, scarf… sweater/jeans. Yes, you might be hot at the airport BUT it’ll only be for a short time, and then you can leave it all at the hotel / home once you arrive! I’d pack a sweater or two, usually cardigans so I can layer / mix and match over a few basic t-shirts (or just alone and buttoned up) and then I find the sweet spot is winter dresses (like sweater dresses) that you can pair with different leggings/tights to mix/match. That way you only have the one pair of jeans you’re wearing and the rest is tops/dresses and tights. Depending on your hotel, you can use an umbrella they may have for guests… otherwise, I try to use my hood (if it’s not heavy rain/snow and my coat has one), a winter hat, or I wrap a scarf around my head if I’m going in and out of buildings (again, not heavy precipitation). I use jewelry to “dress” anything up, including some broaches for my coats if I want to elevate it from day to night. I heard some great advice the other day that I didn’t realize I follow as well (or I would have mentioned it) but when it comes to clothes, pick a color palette that can all mix/match well together and you’re set! Blacks, blues, greys, burgundies, browns… if you keep it to earth tones, you generally can’t fail in the combinations!
      It’s a challenge but definitely possible and use jewelry/accessories to avoid the “backpacker” look ;)
      Another (similar) weekend we had in Helsinki years back, I didn’t have a hat with me and ended up buying one. It actually made me happy I didn’t bring one as now that was my souvenir from the city and it still reminds me of it each time I wear it. So sometimes it’s good to forget something and need to shop 🥰

    Just curious. When you're out walking with your backpack do you move your passports maybe closer to you instead of that outside pocket ? And is that backpack slash proof material?

    • @HiKatherine
      @HiKatherine  ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Great questions! Something I did not address but worth mentioning: so once walking in the cities, etc (when I don’t need them at the airport), I move all my things (except maybe like hand sanitizer or anything invaluable) to the middle compartment or the back document/laptop space… so it’s more “on” me. I don’t lock it but have the lock if I really think necessary. As for the material, it’s a thick coated (ie. Water repellant) canvas so wouldn’t be (although is tough), but if I’m being honest the likelihood of that happening is small. Pickpocketing is a problem (even if not a large threat), and while I’ve heard personally from those who have had it happen to them, I’ve not yet heard of this occurring. The thieves will go for an easy target and there are enough people who don’t pay attention to have an easier grab… so I wouldn’t worry.

    • @BagznBirdz
      @BagznBirdz ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@HiKatherine the pickpockets will check those outside pockets of backpacks that are easy to reach as people store their valuables in those pockets. If it's easy for you to reach for, it's easy for the thief to get to. Anything that's in the outside pockets of a bag are an easy grab. Airports are a common hunting ground for pickpockets.
      The backpack isn't slash proof material but it's hard to cut through as it's the same material that's used for trekking clothes. If you want slash proof, go for Pacsafe that has backpacks with a steel mesh on the fabric and steel wire in the straps.

Started doing this after I was carrying a regular backpack in a city that doesn't really have many pickpockets and still, the side pocket had been opened without me or my travel partner noticing anything. The problem with backpacks for me is the weight, it's heavier to carry than a suitcase with wheels. I used to use only backpacks (I could pack a 35l backpack for a week trip), but now it would be to heavy to carry on my back. And I'm not even than old, just noticed it changed in comparison to my 20-ties). For a weekend trips 20l backpack is well enough. Europe is different when it comes to security requirements than the US. Like they don’t require you to remove your shoes, etc. That being said, not all airports require you to put it inside a plastic bag… (rather, they don’t enforce it) so I rarely have used a plastic bag and it’s been fine. It’s probably not the official response I should give but it’s the honest one and it’s never been an issue. That said if someone wants to be extra sure (Ryan does this for example), you can put your items in a plastic bag (which just goes on top) and you take take them out when you’re at security… again, this is for Europe. In the US, yes we use the plastic bags, definitely, there isn’t really a way around it. Another point of difference is we travel a lot by train, which doesn’t have this requirement and so it works fine without it. But when in doubt, bring/use the plastic bag!

I don’t intend to stuff, so I can use as a carry-on. I wanted something that would hold some weight on my hips, a traditional backpack. Hi Abby, 36L are perfect sizes for the needs you just mentioned! We have ones similar to what you described and have used it in both circumstances: carry-ons but then for actual treks. Great find! For weight load, there are some great tutorials to follow but the general rule is heaviest items right up against the center / back of the pack... lighter on the bottom/outside and mid-weight outside-top. For actually trekking trips such as the Camino, definitely be sure to pack accordingly as it makes such a difference... and for that, you can really push yourself on the "less is more", it's worth it in the end!

    I have the same backpack. I bought it thinking it would be good as a personal item for flights, in addition to my carryon bag.
    I tried packing it out like you described, as an experiment to see if I could travel with the Kånken backpack alone. I don’t take my laptop when I travel, just my iPad. It fit inside my crossbody bag (a Kipling Alvar) which I stowed in the laptop compartment along with my little pouch of inflight essentials - extra mask; sanitizer wipes; tissue; sleep mask; and Rescue Remedy lozenges. I even managed to squeeze my flip flops into the main compartment. The total weight came to 13 lbs, just a bit under 6 kg. I was feeling pretty pleased with myself but then I realized I’d forgotten to pack the pouch containing my Epi-pen and meds. 🤦🏻‍♀️ The backpack was packed to the max with absolutely no room to spare.
    I’m thinking I might be able to do it with a slightly bigger backpack though. Maybe something in the 20 to 22 litre range. Thanks for the inspiration! 🎒✈️🌍❤️
    ETA: I’m very security conscious and I need to have my wallet, phone, and passport within my sight and close at hand at all times. The thought of putting them in my backpack makes me anxious. Fortunately, a travelling friend offered me a solution. She told me that airlines count belt bags as apparel and not as part of your baggage allowance. I bought a Lululemon Everywhere Belt Bag. It’s just big enough to keep my passport, phone, wallet, charger, earbuds, and a few essentials such as chapstick and tissue. So if I can fit everything else into a small backpack, I could still travel hands-free. 😊

      Thanks for sharing! I didn’t know about the belt bag tip, that’s really interesting 👍🏼 Also, appreciate sharing the brand/model… really handy too for me and others curious to check it out… thank you! 🙌🏼 Best of luck for your travels; I’m confident you’ll be traveling lighter and with a backpack soon, you’ve got the motivation in any case… I’m cheering you on! 🥰❤️🎒

    I’m old and I’m on Team Quad Rollerbag. I’ll haul a backpack once I’m there but there’s no way, even though I pack minimally, I want to carry all that stuff on my arthritic knees

      Indeed, you're right, a roller sounds like the way to go in this case! :)

    I have a question. What about sleep? I didn't see any pajamas.

    Team backpack for sure. I'm not quite as hardcore as you, I have have a 40L travel backpack that I love (it's plenty big). It's not a problem to carry my stuff as I explore a city before catching a flight. I have a small eddie bauer folding backpack that I use if I leave my bigger bag at the hotel. A suitcase is only appropriate if you're traveling by car. Love the minimalism.. When I studied abroad, I knew a girl that'd go on a weekend trip with just her purse!
