When I see the "classic tuner look" I know everything rattles, the tires rub on compression, there's a boost leak, the synchros are gone, the ACD light is flashing and instead of defeating Lambos this Evo is out there getting humiliated by Toyota Camrys. You can do 600whp on these things with a stock looking engine bay.
the chrome exhaust manifold for me personally looks better because it gives some contrast to the engine bay and looks more "modified" than just a black one
You guys need a machine shop that you work with regularly that will make "house calls". Anytime you get into something you're worried about breaking bolts in blocks / heads, just call them up and save yourself the trouble for a little money. When I was in the auto trade, we had someone that would do "on call" jobs with no notice for under $400 in most cases, labor and part(s). That would be extracting a flush broken bolt, and thread chasing retapping or whatever. I am sure if you find someone local and are flexible with when the job is done, you could probably get it under $200.
Idk I’m in Sf Bay Area, and I have an ae86 from the bay, and there isn’t an inch of rust on it. I’m thinking he drove it to the snow (Lake Tahoe/sierras) when they were still salting roads. That could explain the surface rust
Pete definitely stole that Heat Shield for his car LOL.... The Tomei looks a lot nicer, nothing wrong with a little pop, especially when you have carbon parts in the bay and aftermarket charge pipes.
This video gave me 1g DSM flashbacks. I was one of those guys with broken head studs. I got them out and installed new ones. I also installed a ported big 16G, ported gen 2 exhaust and a Buschur exhaust. 😎. Let’s not forget a Greddy Profec B to control everything. Haha.
You guys should invest in one of those induction heating guns. They work amazing at putting a ton of heat into just the exhaust studs. Personally I wouldn’t have put that lower turbo heat shield back on. I had several recurring problems with my ceramic O2 housing and the bolts backing out even though they were torqued. The grim speed master cylinder brace is also a night and day difference mod. Super worth it.
Its really entertaining watching pampered technicians that have never delt with rust and cars trying to work on cars with very slight surface rust. Its like a deer in headlights thing
i post the same comment every time you guys put a koyo rad in a car. koyo rads are the absolute best. fits exactly like oem, and theyre extremely tough! i put my koyo rad into a wall going 50km and its literally perfect still. im a koyo customer for life, after how good my koyo rad is i will never buy a different brand radiator. fun fact, the koyo rad with an upgraded clutch fan in my 240 worked too well while i was driving it in the cold weather. If i stopped at a set of lights my coolant gauge would drop from operating temp to cold and i would lose my heat, i had to cover my rad with cardboard so i could maintain temp and keep my heat cause it worked too well
JGT500 was made by Espelir and is one of the best back in the day. Dent in it was probably from bottoming out or didn’t fit right because of downpipe. I ran that JGT500 for a long time. The only thing that failed was the resonator which I later cutout.
Funny you mention that. My first big drive in this car was to deliver it to Canada. When I bought it there was a slight rattle. By the time I got to Canada it was shot.
Came here to say this lol. Pretty desirable exhaust now that it’s discontinued. Have the same one on my 8 and it fits and sounds wonderful. Wouldn’t mind another for my 9
I've always loved the Evo 8/9 as it was my first real sports car but after having watched all your Evo content for years now I can confidently say I never want to take one apart!
1 thing you might try with those exhaust manifold studs is heat the stud itself until it's glowing but keep the heat away from the head. Then cool down the stud itself so the head retains the heat and it shrinks the bolt inside the hole. If you use a penetrant to cool the stud then it also allows it to more easily get into the threads. Thus making extraction that much more easy to come out with less risk of damaging threads or breaking the bolt. Rinse and repeat as needed until it comes out. Just try not to put too much heat into the head. Too much direct heat will distort or melt the aluminum. Just a thought. Keep up the sick builds 🤙
Deep Creep penetrating fluid combined with heat is amazing. Deep Creep by itself is O.K. but you soak it and then throw heat on it and magic happens. I have gotten stuff apart that really shouldn't have been possible.
Excellent work gent! Removing the chrome and going with the black OEM heat shield was definitely the right move. The Ultimate Racing exhaust was a nice come up. Looking forward to see what type of HP it makes. Pete while you have the car why not spray the undercarriage with some Fluid film “Black”…that California car is quickly becoming a victim of the rust belt.
Some costal CA cars, especially north of Santa Cruz, will develop rust especially if parked outside. Nothing like you get in the midwest with salted roads and heavy rain, but it does happen. Just something to consider/check if you ever buy a car from CA.
With aluminum heads you have to leave the heat on the head to get the studs out. Aluminum dissipates the heat so fast that you have to have DP hold the fire to it. 🔥
Good call on the exhaust studs, even if you had used the heat induction tool and heat em up there was a high chance you would end up stripping it and then its a head job. Very good choice of turbo, it is somewhat the incarnation of OEM+. Stock exhaust heat shield for me, all day
Can't put my finger on why I am noticing now, but you guys have really come a long way, even over the past couple years. Lots of effort spent getting different angles and dynamic shots of a single task and editing, which keeps it entertaining. PT works looks like a full blown tech now too. Things really coming together. 👌Appreciate the effort!
I'm looking forward to the tuning. I've got the same Evo 8 and have half these mods already, so I'm looking forward to the end to know where I could go with my own car.
I like the tomei cover, gives a classic tuner look

Agreed
Love the chrome too!! Adds so much
Barf, ya'll need to learn some taste.

My machinest loves his threaded collets for removing manifold studs. So much less sketchy than double nuts. McMaster probably has some!
This California car looks pretty Midwest.
It sure does. I have the carfax, lived in SanDiego it's whole life. No idea why it looks like that.
Maybe lived it’s life near the ocean?
@@WTFNoNamesLeft2 if it lived and drove by the beach often, that could explain why. Same thing happens to cars here at South Padre Island, TX.
I live next to the ocean in California and my stock exhaust was just as bad on my FR-S
Idk I’m in Sf Bay Area, and I have an ae86 from the bay, and there isn’t an inch of rust on it. I’m thinking he drove it to the snow (Lake Tahoe/sierras) when they were still salting roads. That could explain the surface rust
I liked the little bit of bling with the Tomei heat shield.
Pete definitely stole that Heat Shield for his car LOL.... The Tomei looks a lot nicer, nothing wrong with a little pop, especially when you have carbon parts in the bay and aftermarket charge pipes.
yup lol
I had an MHI on my 10. 450hp 380tq on E85. It’s a fantastic turbo choice for a car that’s a backroad canyon carver. What a ripper!!
The Tomei cover is leagues better- it sings with that rad rad

Just found this video and ur comment is 2yrs old. Just sold my 89 tsi awd tonight. Feel like I died a little but remember all the nightmares and am ok
Love the OEM heat shield! So much nicer. I probably would have taken it one step further and painted it flat black to match a new OEM one.
You guys should invest in one of those induction heating guns. They work amazing at putting a ton of heat into just the exhaust studs. They actually have one and have used it on several builds.
I really like these “ Mod My Ride” builds. I also like the in-depth builds, I guess I just like your channel a lot.
Tomei heat shield for the JDM points... and it can be painted or coated black if desired 💯
Its really entertaining watching pampered technicians that have never delt with rust and cars trying to work on cars with very slight surface rust. Its like a deer in headlights thing

Tomei Cover ftw!
I've always loved the Evo 8/9 as it was my first real sports car but after having watched all your Evo content for years now I can confidently say I never want to take one apart!
Easily one of the best car channels on TH-cam!🙌

love the mods y'all did but the underside and condition of the suspension just killed it for me sheesh!!!
love the evo series cant wait for the 6 to get done. A set of cams and bigger turbo outlet and it will be a very nice package.
Tomei cover is awesome
That’s why I changed all hardware in the engine bay to titanium, no more rust issues 😀. Love to see a proper Evo build, take up the nice contents.
The mods look clean and OEM+. Can't wait to see how much hp/tq on the dyno.
I liked the chrome cover
I quite liked the chrome heat shield but each to their own
Deep Creep penetrating fluid combined with heat is amazing. Deep Creep by itself is O.K. but you soak it and then throw heat on it and magic happens. I have gotten stuff apart that really shouldn't have been possible.
First notification squad . (Pt and Dp your wrong for using open flames when you has a electric introduction heater element)
Favorite episode from series! Good work!
Yea, the chrome exhaust cover had to go! OEM painted black looks much better. Well done💯
I mean they could paint the Tomei cover black.
Why not paint or scotch brite the polished stainless (not chrome) exhaust cover?
Tomei all the way!
Can't wait to do this to my evo 9 wagon .
Great videos, guys! I hope you bring the sponsors in the next vid
Keep the chrome cover its really nice, maybe get it powder coated black. I prefer it over the stock one personally.
Excellent work gent! Removing the chrome and going with the black OEM heat shield was definitely the right move. The Ultimate Racing exhaust was a nice come up. thumbs up for Dave getting soo pittedd broo rad
When you got those nuts off the exhaust manifold, I was saying to myself, just leave the studs, leave the studs
Geoff at full-race is awesome! Great products.
Did us dirty holding out on the exhaust sound clip!
I like the new exhaust tip size compared to the old one. The old aftermarket exhaust tip was a little cramped looking. Overall cool build series.
Take a break from house work to watch some Speed Academy on Saturday morning! Happy Memorial Day weekend!

Also the car is looking awesome. Great work.
I love seeing the tq wrench being used.
That's why I gave them my car!
love the content. I would love to see you put a 3sgte mr2 any Gen. in a frs
Would highly recommend using copper nuts on exhast manifold bolts, SO much less chance of damaging the studs.
Early Saturn's were the greatest, copper exhaust nuts ftw
Fluid film looks to be on a banner in that shop. Get that car fluid filmed.
Pleassssssse paint that fan shroud! And maybe a carbon heat shield to match the rest of the carbon!
Can't put my finger on why I am noticing now, but you guys have really come a long way, even over the past couple years. Use breaker bar with pipe extra force or impact. Spray pb blast.
For that stud
yeah im glad you took out that chrome heat shield
i always click like for upgrading east asian neutral finders!
13:50 transfer case?? don't you mean differential?
13.47 that’s the differential and not the transfer case, but great vid!
I like the shape of the Tomie but prefer the color of the stock cover.
Trap a box end on the inside then add both nuts. Far less chance of stripping.
Loooove these videos brotha keep em coming
it definitely needs those EVO 7 red tail lights, the 9 don't contrast well without the matching rear bumper. especially on a white car.
Leave the Tomei heat shield. the spray painted one is going to flake off
Its an 18k turbo which is basically a beefed up evo 9 turbo ofc its going to fit with a koyo and stock fan.
One thing I do to loosen stubborn nuts is to actually do the opposite tighten it first just to get some movement in it. Then losen it.
this is my first time seeing an 18k on an 8/9. I'm excited to see how much power it makes
guessing 360 ish at the wheels
@@y.b.- yeah probably, unless the car already has fuel system upgrades.
Now maybe you can repeat the M5 to wagon conversion--with an EVO.
That’s so rad!!
My bumhole winced watching a blowtorch so close to the magnesium rocker cover! 🙈😂
I wish yall could do a mazdaspeed6
Should of got the exhaust without the cat! Let that 4g63 roar!
I have a feeling that exhaust might leak, I recommend getting an expander tuner from 60mm to 3 inch and weld it up to get a solid connection
8055 = BOSS. BOSS Evo 8. nice
Love ultimate racing
The JGT 500 is what I have on my V/// and it sounds great. I deleted the resonator and have a high flow converter. Also in ohio 😂.
Calculated risks. Staying in the comfort zone I can see.
Come on guys. You could have cleaned up those rusty lines you put back onto the new turbo!
the tomei heat shield looks better imo
That original exhaust was an Espeli.
Great job boys!
Stock cover for sure
Robert Young from Idaho, as in Forced Performance Robert Young?
Hmm - I always loved your attention for details in your builds, but in this one you took too many shortcuts for my taste.
Damn, this was my chance to say first and I just missed it! Hahaha Keep up the good work dudes!
Where's the conclusion to the evo 6 ?
Holy crap the amount of rust underneath this thing.
That Tomei heat shield wayyyyyy nicer
I'm looking forward to the tuning. I've got the same Evo 8 and have half these mods already, so I'm looking forward to the end to know where I could go with my own car.
put the xhrome baxk on. it looks more modified with it on
Love you guys love the content but the cheesy royalty free music you guys use is horrendous please please get some better music
Im really enjoying this series, just subscribed, but oh man. That endless. loop. of music. Please, something different, anything! 😭
Needed to run a artec manifold and dump setup
I'm not interested in an external dump at all. Don't like the sound.
Is it better than fp
There are snowy parts in Northern California lol
Q. Why don’t you spray all the nuts n bolts with WD40 and let it sit for some time. It makes life a bit better.
I'll be doing that next winter when the car is off the road
Tomei bling
Took off the two JDM parts of the car 🥺
Sorry guys, I had to contact SPCA. You can't put cats into exhausts. It's not species appropriate. ;)
Get some fluidfilm on it if he is gonna daily it ;)
Why haven’t you got an induction heater for removing nuts …
Feel bad for this guy. Going to get his car back and have to pay someone to go through and fix all the 💩
Please enlighten us of all the 💩 oh wise one
