Also if not for DVDs a lot of those special features would never have seen the light of day. DVDs are awesome.

For sure. I was ready to give away my Evil Dead Anchor Bay Copy to goodwill, but the I realized the 4K has none of the special features whatsoever. All it had was a commentary. And it's all the more baffeling when Evil Dead 2's 4K only adds more special features while still containing the DVD special features.

DVDs are definitely worth hanging on to, I can't part with mine anyway for a fact, some new Blu-ray and 4K releases have such daft grading it's well worth keeping the old DVDs as they'll sport natural colors. Back in the day, nobody gave such issues a second thought because there was no need to but now with the revisionist craze going on, forget about it. Also, DVDs viewed on a good Blu-ray player will upscale the image so it resembles HD and quite frankly, this is good enough if not just perfect for me when watching old classics and favorites. This way, I actually feel it can be the best of both worlds and help the viewing pleasure.

One of my favorite things about DVDs is the design. The old Anchor Bay DVD tin sets are some of my favorites, as well as the German DVD Mediabooks that had special features that were never ported to Blu-ray.

The Hitchhiker is one of those classic horror TV anthologies that should just be on any serious horror anthology fan's list - it's right up there with the likes of Tales from the Darkside, Tales from the Crypt, Monsters, Alfred Hitchcock Presents the 80s version etc. The thing about this original HBO show is, the tales, introduced by a mysterious wandering hitchhiker (creepily played by Page Fletcher), were actually not right-out horror but more tales of the unusal with thrillerish, sci-fi-ish, blackly comical vibes: they featured lots of paranormal twists but not a lot of classic horror monsters, were REALLY strong on the atmosphere and had an unusual amount of sex scenes and nudity (well, it is HBO...). Lots of then-and-now famous faces appeared on this show over the years, and it's good to see someone out there - such as yourself - referencing it as it appears to be quite forgotten overall. Anyway, a hearty recommendation for all lovers of the weird and the uncanny (if you can find it)!

I remember "The Hitchhiker" being on the USA Network. Yeah that opening theme is killer. It was originally on HBO for a season or two and those were apparently the best. I also have the Volume 2 & 3 DVDs - decent episodes but none from the HBO run I don't think.

I hate the fact that they got lazy with blu ray menu screens. DVDs had some of the greatest menus ever. The Jeepers Creepers 2 menu in particular used to scare the hell out of me when I was a kid. I’ve never seen the Howling sequels after the third one so I’m going to have to seek those out one of these days.

Let’s hope Vinegar Syndrome gets the rights to Return to Sleepaway Camp with a new scan and reinstated deleted scenes like the rats eating Frank’s stomach, if you pause at the right time, there’s a frame of a close up of the rats in the stomach and then it cuts to Paul DeAngelo.

I have that Return/Dead MGM DVD but it came out in 2002, not 1999. I bought mine at a Suncoast and if you turn off the lights, you'll notice the cover glows in the dark. I have that TCM steelbook as well. I want to include some honorable mentions that weren't shown in this video:
Return of the Living Dead 3 Trimark DVD: this is the only way to own the R rated cut since it wasn't on the Vestron blu ray.
Robocop Criterion DVD: there are laserdisc features on there that never made it to the later DVDs/blu rays and some of the scenes have a different sound mix, also it's in the 1:66.1 aspect ratio.
Lethal Weapon 1-3 director's cut DVDs: not horror but I still wanted to mention them because you can't get these cuts on blu ray.
The Exorcist 3 Warner DVD: mainly because this DVD (the old Warner blu ray is the same as well) has the original color timing before SF kinda revised it for their blu ray release, not sure if the newer 4K changed this or not.
The Fly 1-2 2-disc collector's DVDs: I would keep these just for the awesome menu screens, the SF blu ray menus were meh.
The Evil Dead 1-2 Book/Dead editions DVD: Well, you know the answer to this one!
Nightbreed Warner DVD: if you don't own the SF LE blu ray box set then this is the only way to get the original theatrical cut of the film in the US without paying a lot of money for it.
Lord of Illusions unrated director's cut MGM DVD: the SF blu ray is OOP and expensive so this is a cheaper alternative if you just want to own the film.
Hellraiser 1-2 20th anniversary DVDs: all of the 2007-08 interviews made for these discs were not ported over to the newer blu rays, although the Anchor Bay Hellraiser blu ray did port over the 07 features but it is OOP.
Dead Alive Trimark DVD: blu ray is OOP and very expensive.
The Terminator 2001 MGM SE DVD: this is the only way to watch the movie with the original mono, the blu rays do not have this track.
T2 Ultimate Edition Artisan DVD: mainly for the laserdisc archive.
Blair Witch 2 Artisan DVD: there is no blu ray.
Hellraiser 3 2006 Paramount DVD: I would get this one mainly for the Clive barker The Art of Horror documentary as this was the only DVD release to ever have it on disc and if you just want the movie in widescreen or in good quality this is the one to own if you don't want to pay huge money for the OOP Scarlet Box. The Echo Bridge DVD of Hellraiser 3 is terrible so avoid it, it's in pan/scan and the transfer looks like a crappy VHS rip.

I own a lot of these! That Return of the Living Dead DVD from MGM is one of the first DVDs I ever owned. When my mom and stepdad got me my first DVD player for my 14th birthday, they also got me four DVDs: Children of the Corn and Hell Night on Anchor Bay, a cheesy but fun straight to video action horror comedy called Soulkeeper and that very ROTLD disc. Years later I took that DVD to my very first horror convention and got it signed by John Russo and Russ Streiner (before I fully understood what their actual “involvement” in the film entailed, but they didn’t seem to mind) That TCM steelbook is still one of the crowning jewels of my collection and that Jason “Thrillogy” is a surprisingly good set. Despite the skinny cases, Freddy VS Jason still has two discs, which is impressive.

Great video!! I always loved the heyday of DVD, its so nostalgic to me, i was just finishing high school in 2004 and getting more and more heavily into horror, plus almost everything was being released on dvd and i will never forget the amazing horror selection they had at my local store, it was located in a basement, & that made it evan more iconic for a collector 🤟🤟🔥🔥

    Interesting picks.
If I had to recommend some great DVDs that are rather expensive or could be…
    -Freaked (1993)
    -Quicksilver Highway (1997)
    -The Dark Half (1993)
-1408 (2007) (The 2-Disc Collector’s Edition as it has both the theatrical and directors cut, don’t know why the theatrical was axed afterwards)
    -The Cave (2005)
    -Bats (1999) (Special Edition)

I said it before and I´ll say it again. I LOVED the DVD Era. That being said I think one of the ways it "failed" was with the Collector´s Edition and the difference in prices.
For instance, almost everything was either Collector´s Ed., Ultimate Ed., Special Ed. ...to the point where nothing was. Also they either released just one edition that was Special or if they sold a regular release and a Special Ed. , most of the times, the difference in prices were so few that you´d rather pay the difference and get the Special with all the Extras. What I would hace done is to release a regular edition with just the movie for $5.00 and the Special Ed. for $20.00. That way there was truly an incentive to choose one over the other and most people could decide if they´d just cared barely for the movie to get the standard or if not pay more for the Special Ed.
    PS
Another thing of the DVD Era was the fact that most people were buying movies when back on the VHS Era they did not. I know I was one of them. I made a collection that was basically a Blockbuster. And I´m not going to sell them or upgrade all of them to BD.
...I basically already upgraded the movies I wanted and now I just pick and choose BDs. As for DVDs I´d still get them for movies I do want to own but don´t care that much for them.
    PS1
If you could, please do this but with your entire DVD collection. Go in whatever order you have and showcase a few of them at a time like on this video.

Children of the Living Dead brings back some great memories for me. When my wife and I were dating, we used to go to Blockbuster and Hollywood Video looking for B movie gems. I was so excited to see Tom Savini in the video that I paused it and explained his impact on cinema. The look in Maria's eyes was simultaneously "I love this nerd" and "why am I with this guy?" lol

Not all, but I do have a lot of those. But, nah, the only time I ever buy dvds anymore is only if it hasn't been released on blu-ray. I do have a few that if they were released on blu, I'd still keep the dvd versions of like Peter Jackson's Braindead. I've got UK and Swedish (I think) copies. Different art, but both completely uncut unlike the US unrated which is still cut.
There are 3 volumes to The Hitchhiker. I've only seen the first volume in the wild. I watched that when it first came on HBO. Loved the show. I think it only ran for a few seasons then moved to USA network for another season. Sadly, even with 3 volumes, not all of the shows have been released.

The prom night 3 is edited yes but I heard the uncut is a Australian release? And maybe still here on TH-cam, I had the vhs back in the day and remember seeing nudity but the dvd doesn’t have that and instead of “I don’t want any fucken pie” it’s “I don’t want any freaken pie”

Hi CHH, I hope you are well. Prom Night 3 was released uncut on DVD in Australia by MRA Entertainment, but it's difficult to find and is in fullscreen (4:3). Alternatively, there's a Spanish DVD available with English audio, and I believe it is anamorphic, which can be easily found on Amazon and eBay. Thought I'd mention it in case you went hunting for the uncut version 😉😊

The only thing I remember about Children of the Living Dead, besides it being godawful, is Tom Savini ripping his shirt off and trying soooooo hard to be sexy.
Prom Night III is the heavily censored TV version on that double-feature. I watched it once and was so disgusted with all the cuts that I never watched it again. While it has been released in other territories, I'm pretty sure importing the Australian DVD is the only way to see the original R-rated version in digital format. Has an alternate cover, too.

So many movies never get a Blu-ray release. Due to rights or lost to time. People complaining about the quality I'm like I grew up on that and VHS it was fine. You blow it up on a projector from a Blu ray player it upscales it anyway. The prices are out of whack anyway releases going for thirty bucks but on DVD it's like five to ten. 4k and most Blu-ray boutique releases are aimed at strictly collectors only. No wonder DVD is still the top seller. It's why I worry the comics industry did the same and the whole industry crashed in the 90s. I like top quality when I can get it but honesty some movies look worse in HD. The effects especially CGI usually ages bad. I'll take practical effects all day any day.

I still have a ton of old school DVDs and will never part with them. Yes I've upgraded a ton of them to bluray and some 4k but there is a certain charm to an older movie with a crappier picture quality. I think it often adds to the nostalgia factor of many of those movies.
