DVDs/Blu-rays still are nice to have simply because you don't have to worry about those films/TV shows getting censored or changed years down the line. They're frozen in time and as they were when they were made.

I love DVDs, I buy used DVDs all the time and still own hundreds. Tons of great flicks that haven't been released on blu yet and underground gems that will never see the light of day again. I feel like a true physical media collector will buy whatever format their favourite flicks are. Also DVD has the better menu screens. I own several hundred VHS, a few hundred DVD, several hundred BR and I only own maybe 70 to 90 4k. I don't care about picture quality really, sometimes the grit and grime of DVD really adds to the flick.

This video really hits home for me today because I’m about to pull the trigger on Black Christmas 2006 dvd 📀 brand new on amazon for only $9.61 Canadian. With the blu ray being long out of print I’m not going to pay the crazy eBay prices. I’m content getting the dvd and owning the movie. I guess having ownership and access to the film is what’s most important to me as a movie fan.

I buy all formats, even VHS and still watch them all. I think there will always be a place for DVD. There is still a broad market for them, as they are very affordable.
Another thing I want to say, is I personally haven't been that impressed with 4K. I don't get the hype. And I for one hate the constant double/triple dipping. I don't really want or have room to own "insert whatever movie you want" in every format, every limited edition, ect.
Great topics and discussion to have!

    • @LarryFleetwood8675
      @LarryFleetwood8675 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +9

I agree, I can still watch VHS and even have LaserDisc still. The experience of the beloved movie itself, is the most important factor when watching so to me the format isn't so crucial as we all know VHS looks kind of crappy compared to later formats but sometimes that doesn't matter. I like having the option of formats, there's something for every mood and I'm not stuck with a movie forever looking a certain way. A most recent release doesn't necessarily mean it's also the best, I find that people are often rushing to buy the latest and getting rid of what came before not knowing if they'll ever regret it. 4K doesn't impress me either, I sometimes feel like it's more like someone's pet project based on a personal whim more than how the movie's actually supposed to look. Sometimes studios and too many directors these days feel an urge to mess around, it may be their right to do so but it's not necessarily how I remember or prefer it stuff like Aliens, Thelma & Louise, Dirty Harry, Eraser or Basic Instinct come to mind there's loads of examples and this actually really took off with Blu-ray first...

    • @miss80smoviesandmusic
      @miss80smoviesandmusic 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

@@LarryFleetwood8675 thank you for your comments, Larry. I sometimes feel all alone in my skepticism of 4K, especially in this online YT world. 😊
I'll admit, I bought into the hype. I got a 4K TV and player, albeit probably not the best or most expensive stuff. And have a few titles, that everyone raves about being stellar looking and sounding. And I watch them, and I'm like MEH. I'm just not a "visual" gal so to speak.
I think that's why I favor VHS and vinyl. Because it's analogue and we human beings are really not designed to process digital.
I own over 700 records and prefer the ones that have the pops, cracks and noise. You know? Sorry for my rambling reply 😆

With the inflation and the rising prices of importing stuff from the US and even UK (I live in Sweden for context), for me, DVD is becoming a format that I'm buying more of now compared to a few years ago. I kind of like the weird (kind of cheap) artworks that they use from time to time and the picture quality (especially if it's an older movie) isn't really a negative for me. I prefer blu rays but I like DVDs as well.

Man...I just turned 40. I remember buying Pet Sematary VHS from Suncoast video in '99 for 29 dollars and bringing it to a park to show my friends. Still have that. It means alot. I'm not an outlier in group of friends having well over a thousand Blurays and 4k. Most of my friends have top notch gear and True Dolby Atmos/Vision etc, and it's a source of pride. I fucking love my DVDs. So many lost titles. I can't bring myself to let 'em go. Does the 4.3 ratio drive me fucking crazy stretched out on the screen? Yep. But I have a plasma tv in the bedroom for the shit I won't watch on the main screen setup. I'm okay going back, but I'm sure spoiled now, and obsess over specs. I'm the Vinyl junkie as well. Great discussion CHH! Cheers!

My answer is 100% yes. For me, it’s all about preserving films and physically owning the film. No one can take my physical media collection away from me. I obviously don’t need to go on the “streaming rant,” but streaming services can take down a movie or tv show at any second and there’s nothing you can do about it. Even if everything turns to only dvd, I’d still be able to pop it in the player and watch it whenever I want.
A couple of years ago I thought- “I’ll never buy another dvd again when there’s blu ray.” But since then I’ve gotten really into SOV horror and other obscure horror that is simply not available on blu ray and that’s completely fine. Labels like Massacre Video have a large catalog of movies on dvd and they’re one of the only ways to own them.
    Great video as always, Christian!

Thanks for making this video and bringing up the topic!
Well, I've been on a HUGE physical media collection craze, for the past year, and I've been trying to find copies of movies/shows that I like as well as those that are rare/OOP.
Basically, I do fear that physical media is going away, and I want to make sure that I TRULY own the media and preserve it.
So, I've been going to Half Price Books, Value Village, Goodwill, Amazon, Best Buy, Walmart, and other places and trying to find as much of the physical copies as I can and mainly, its been blu ray, but Ive always been collecting, DVD, VHS, laserdisc and SOME 4K titles.
I don't own a 4K player, but I do have a 4K TV and a blu ray player and honestly, the DVDs look pretty good, when they're upscaled.
Like you mentioned, there's stuff that's ONLY been produced on DVD and never transferred or released (at least in the US, for example) on blu ray, so if I can't find a particular movie on blu ray, for whatever reason and am able to find it/have it on DVD, then I'll get the DVD.
For example, Enemy Mine. Never been released on blu ray in the US, as far as I know, and the other day I found a DVD copy at thrift store. I also found a DVD copy of Red Sonja, recently. Again, Ive never seen a US blu ray release for it.
While I have "upgraded" much of my DVD collection with blu rays, I'm also having trouble wanting to get rid of the DVDs.
I kinda see DVDs as a companion and back-up, in case something ever happens to the blu ray. It's nice to have both, if possible.
And, for some people, they like collecting multiple versions/releases of films on multiple formats. Hey, I'm guilty of double-dipping on certain movies. I can't help it.
Also, like you mentioned, Walmart and other department stores are STILL selling DVDs and there's also thrift stores that have rows of DVDs and you see people (including, myself) STILL buying them. So, there is a still a market for DVDs, for sure.
To answer your question, if Id be happy if physical media were to consolidate to only DVD, in the future, Id def be happy.
Sure, Id love to have an HD format, but if my 4KTV can upscale and make the DVDs look better/close to blu ray quality, then I'm happy.
It's nice to have DVD as an option/back-up.
If you cant find something on blu ray, because it's OOP (or if it happens to the DVD), it just feels comforting to know that you have some sort of copy of that movie or show, in a physical form.

I'm not on 4K.I have 4K disks because I get combos but I'm buying for the Blu Ray.For example I have the upcoming releases of The Abyss and True Lies on pre-order but I'm buying for the Blu Ray of the movies. There's some reasons I'm not upgrading to 4K at this point but Im all in on Blu Ray. I'll still watch DVD. I have no problem still watching DVD and it's rare for me to double dip if I have something already on DVD.I'll upgrade from VHS to Blu Ray but if i already have it on DVD, I'm fine sticking with the DVD.If it's an upgrade from VHS ,something I never had or a new release of current/ new films or shows,I'll certainly get the Blu Ray or 4K + Blu Ray. But I will still buy DVD releases if that's the only format something is being released on.For example, Cobra Kai has only gotten DVD releases from Sony. So I have all five seasons on DVD(the sixth and final season is supposed to hit Netflix later this year).Seasons 1 and 2 of DC's Stargirl were released on Blu Ray but the third and final season only got a DVD release.

I think DVD definitely still has a place, if only for being much more affordable. As convenient as streaming is, at the end of the day you don’t truly own it. If Amazon takes it down or some studio doesn’t renew its contract, then you’re still out of luck, and out the 15 bucks you paid to “buy” it. So if you just want to be able to watch Dogma at your leisure, and don’t want to shell out $25 and you aren’t interested in the extra bells and whistles. It’s right there for 10 bucks.

This echos the comments observing that some titles are only available on DVD: if you're into silent films, there are quite a few titles where DVD is the only or best option. Consider the film restorations offered by the Filmmuseum in Munich--they release exclusively on DVD (as an aside, their DVD releases are region-free, which is a very nice touch).

Here’s my personal experience. I am 26 years old for reference. Growing up all I knew was VHS and then DVD. Once Blu Ray came along I got a Christmas gift of a movie on Blu Ray called “Waiting”. I had a PS3 that played Blu Ray and a HDMI cable. I honestly could not tell the difference in quality so I initially thought Blu Ray was a gimmick for the customer to pay more. So I always did DVD up until 2021. My ignorance of that one incident caused me to believe it was a gimmick so I stuck with DVD for that reason alone plus it was cheaper too. Well fast forward to when I binge watched the SAW series. I own the 8 movie collection that has Blu Ray and DVD in the pack. I have seen these movies a handful of times on DVD. But this time I decided to do the Blu Ray cuz why not. It changed everything. Those movies are dirty looking and supposed to look not great in quality however the Blu Ray enhanced that look! I was blown away. So now in 2023-2024 I buy Blu Ray and on an occasion a DVD if there is no higher version of it. It was a game changer though. I never got into 4K though cuz I just can’t afford all the necessary upgrades. I guess the bottom line is younger people stream, our generation that grew up with the upgraded physical media releases care about it, and older people just grab the DVD since they don’t upgrade and it also helps that it’s cheaper. If you go to Walmart and see the same movie one in DVD and right next to it you see the same movie in blu ray/4K put look at the price difference beside them, more times than not the consumer will grab the DVD. Same movie lower price is the consumer mindset for the average joe

I get casual buyers wanting to save a few $, but I've never understood all these people that bought these big HD TVs, and clinging to DVDs. They paid for an HD screen they're feeding SD content to. Expensive boutique stuff aside, most mainstream big studio standard issue blus can be had for dirt cheap, often only a few more dollars than the DVD. I've sold off all my DVDs that have had higher quality releases. I do still buy DVDs of movies that haven't gotten a better disc since. I specifically recall buying that Return OTLD MGM DVD in 2002 when it was new, in a Best Buy. Had nostalgia for it but no reason to ever go back and watch it, so I've sold it and the Scream blu since I have the 4k now. I don't think all these early 2000s/2010s DVDs will be sought after or collected like 80s and 90s VHS are now. I think the people younger than 30 now barely grew up with video stores prior to 2010 and by the time they were teens there was Netflix streaming and Redbox and most video stores closing. Those ROTLD MGM DVDs still sell for as little as $10-15, over 20 years after release, while the 80s HBO Thorn Emi VHS tapes go for around 100 or more. And I actually think the VHS prices for non-rare stuff soaring is stupid and that bubble will eventually burst similar to how some retro game prices have fallen the past few years from where they were.

I'm mostly a horror collector and I've over a 1,000 VHS, 3,800 DVDs, 400 Blu-rays and like 50 4Ks. My Holy Grails are 250 Venezuelan VHS. I began watching movies in 1984 when my mom bought me a Midland VCR. At the beginning I could only rent and record movies because at the beginning VHS was expensive. You couldn't find a movie for less than say $50 so we couldn't afford them. Later on VHS prices went down to $20 and budget releases for $5-$10. I spent a fortune on VHS when I began to study and work. Well time went on and DVD came out I was very excited that all these foreign movies were getting released on disc and on longer versions and looking better. I sold 100s of VHS including around a 100 Venezuelan which I would come to regret years later, because everything was coming to DVD. So I upgraded 100s of titles as they came out at great expense. Then Blu-ray came out. Hum!🤔 I'm noticing a pattern here. I bought a Sony Blu-ray player but few movies. Nowadays I still buy mostly DVDs some Blu-rays and a handful of 4Ks. I'm not going to upgrade my whole collection again. I've only upgraded my very favorites or buy movies that have never been in the US market. Yes I think DVDs are still very relevant today. I personally only own DVDs for movies that haven’t made the jump to Blu-Ray, but honestly with the amount of money I’ve spent on my collection it could easily be 4x the size if I didn’t worry about picture quality or limited editions so much. My girlfriend is a bit of cinephile and only collects DVD because it’s just not a big deal to her and they’re cheap, especially if you get them at a secondhand store. I think sometimes being in the physical media “bubble” we forget that most people aren’t obsessed with picture quality and are not bothered by the “ew” factor of DVD. Beyond that, I’ve seen DVDs that definitely hold up with upscaling even on 4K TVs albeit not perfect by any means. Sorry for the essay, but it’s definitely an interesting topic for debate.

"As of March 2021, around 44 percent of U.S. television households have a 4K-capable TV set". It's probably pretty much half now, so yeah, they do. Watching DVDs on a 4k TV makes even less sense than watching them on an HD 1080p one. Streaming is probably king for most. Most people stopped buying discs years ago.

I mostly buy Blu rays now but I still buy dvds every so often. Box sets of shows are cheaper, some of the interactive menus and features are better, and for movies I like but don’t love I don’t necessarily need the special collectors disc. The dvd is fine. Also sometimes a movie may be OOP on Blu ray but the dvd is cheap and available 2nd hand. Nice to have that option.

It’s funny you bring up the MGM Return of the Living Dead dvd. Before it was released, I couldn’t find it ANYWHERE. When it was released I didn’t have a player. It was the first dvd I ever owned. I remember watching it for the first time in many years on a dvd player by myself late at night at college in the student quad center. They had a tv and dvd player. I waited until very late at night and absolutely loved it. I’ll never let that go!

I think it’ll be a while before DVDs are phased out because of how reliable it still is. Unlike VHS, which was phased out because the technology and format had become obsolete, DVDs are still a reliable format, even if the picture/sound quality isn’t as strong as a blu-ray or 4K. Convenience is another factor. I live in the deep south and work at a thrift store and there are people always buying our DVDs and other movies. A lot of these people live in rural areas so for them, it’s more convenient to buy a DVD than use streaming.

What I do now, and this is what I should have done since the DVDs started, is to get on BD only the movies I truly want or upgrade my favorite ones from DVD (and in this regard I think I already acomplished that). For DVDs I just get movies I´m only interested in.
For instance, I like the PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN movies. Just like. As such, I got them on DVD. Even though I could get most of them used on BD either for the same price or barely that price. Still, I just like them.
And I truly think that most people aren´t interested in the best quality possible. Just to own the movies/TV series they like.
    PS
I´ve been rewatching Game of Thrones. This time on a massive 65 inch TV. And the video quality is AMAZING. 4K can be much better? Sure. But I´m not that invested into getting all the equipment needed and start upgrading what I already own again and more expensive. More so when BD is already so incredible.

  • @matthewg666

Reminds me of the Beta vs VHS wars. Beta had the better picture quality and audio, but VHS was cheaper. At their peak, Beta could record up to 5 hours but VHS could go up to 10 hours. Of course longer recording times resulted in lesser quality. But, cheaper and quantity won out.
Now, the dvd vs blu-ray/4k war is similar to an extent. Dvds aren't really that much cheaper than blu-rays. Blu-ray players can play dvds. However, I still occasionally find people that don't know that. Plus, you get a new dvd player for as low as $30. So, once again. For the average person, it's about cheaper and having more.
Now, personally I think dvds will eventually be phased out especially if brick and mortars stop carrying physical media. However, on the offchance that blu-ray/4k goes extinct and dvd is all that's left... nah, I think I'd be done. It's one thing to buy the occasional dvd if it hasn't been released on blu-ray. Quite another to regress altogether.
I do also collect music. Currently own about 720 cds and a couple hundred records. Most of the records I have were my mom's collection. The rest were records I bought 30+ years ago. While I miss the ritual of buying a new record and transferring it to cassette (Maxell UDS-II was my cassette of choice), there's no way I'm back to vinyl just because vinyl is the big thing now. That's how I feel about dvd.

I might be a bit of an unusual collector because even though I mostly prioritize bluray, I still buy DVD and collect both formats. I have a couple of 4K but not equipped for those just yet. I will always buy BD over a DVD if it has a commentary or better features but I don’t want my DVD collection to just be older titles so sometimes I choose DVD because it is cheaper and I want to spike my collection with a few recent titles too.

I used to buy movies for the sake of having them in good quality, but now I've started to lean towards owning movies just for the sake of being able to say I own that movie. A lot of the horror movies that get scream factory, arrow, vinegars syndrome, he underground, etc releases on Blu Ray for upwards of $40 most of the time I can get on DVD for $5-10, so I can buy them in bulk and gain a collection faster. Not to mention the resolution doesnt bother me too much. I still buy Blu rays and the occasional 4ks for movies I think are truly fantastic, but I like just owning movies

As a collector, "All Physical Media Lives Matter" After Katt Williams broke the internets I wanted to re-watch the Friday movies. The only physical copy I could find was the entire collection on DVD for $10... That's fine to me. Friday movies don't really need to have a 4k copy for me to enjoy them. As far as I know 90s shows like "Tales from the Crypt", "Mr. Show", "Eerie Indiana", "The Larry Sanders Show" are only on DVD. So that's how I watch/collect them to this day. So yes, DVDs matter and are collectable for certain shows and movies that never got to shine on 4K for whatever reasons...

if there is an affordable option, I pretty much exclusively buy 4k and blu ray movies , but I only started collecting movies 3 or 4 years ago, so I never really owned a lot of DVDs. At first I was going to stay away from tv shows, but decided to pick up some of my favorite series. I make a DVD exemption for these because it is usually a much cheaper option for something I might only watch a couple of times over the course of the rest of my life.

My preferred physical media is blu ray and 4k. However, there is an outstanding video game store close to me that also has tons of movies for sale. Honestly, nobody else in my city comes close. There's thousands of movies there. They have a buy 2 dvds get one free everyday deal. On Sundays, on top of that deal all dvds are 25% off. And...they have a horror movie section. It's easy for me to take a chance on a borderline horror flick on DVD at these prices.

I have 623 4k's without my 7 pre-ordered Feb, Mar, and April ones (mostly boutique), 1418 1080p, and 571 dvds in my collection. I just gave a little over 300 dvds and blu rays that I don't care about anymore or upgraded to 4k and needed to make room in my Man cave/ Movie room, because shelf space is at a premium now... I won't buy dvds anymore unless I see one that I can't find on blu-ray or is a movie that I want to save money on, so I'll buy a plain old dvd. For example: 20,000 leagues under the sea from Disney is a classic that is like $50 for the blu ray and I found a new dvd which is the identical version with the same special features/extras and found it for $15 new at the salvation Army and a brand new dawn of the dead 78's 2004 ultimate edition box set and even though I have the Second sight deluxe box ... it's one of my top five favorite films, so I bought it to just have in my Romero collection. I love all physical media, dvd's, Blu's, and 4k's..... The biggest issue with me and most of my friends that collect physical media is shelf space, due to shelves, entertainment T.v. stand, 4k player, Sony 3000 es reciever, with me having the 7:2:2 set-up (7 speakers, 2 10" woofer boxes in two corners of the room, and 2 atmos ceiling speakers), movie figure collectables, lazy boy in a 12" x 14" third bedroom, so I'm packed in like a sardine and basically the room is like being in a speaker, but watching movies in there is a dream of sound. I can't even explain how awesome watching movies in there is especially with two 10" woofers across from each other (life changing film enjoyment is an understatement). Sorry I broke into my Soliloquy and off topic, but yes I'll still grab Dvds to promote physical media..... God bless all of the people subscribed to CHH and all collectors.....
