I had one, or did he have me. He was not just my horse... he was a brother.. my brother. We had a very strong relationship in that since. I miss him every day now that he is gone. God made him just for me. I was/am blessed to have him in my life. I miss you Gorge.
I have had horses for 50 years. I had 2 pure Morgans of the Coal Creek Flyhawk line and I still have the daughter and granddaughter of them. They were both not real big horses but with HUGE presence and a look of eagles. They are special.
I rode a golden palomino one ..only his face was slightly more like an Arab than these guys his owner bought him in the states and took him to Ireland. He was a big horse. He really stood out from the horses here. But i think among any group he would have stood out. He had the X factor. Very fitting for America's first breed.
The Morgan house is so so beautiful!! I so so miss my best friend, "Excalibur" AKA "Bondair Bold Prince "Born 4/271982. Let me tell you this loyal friend was so loved. And, I miss his him!!!!!!!
When I was a kid in MOntana, there was a horse in our barn named Keystone Polaris who looked like these guys. he was just magnificent. Thank you so much for this stunning piece on TH-cam!
Morgans are the best! I have a two year old foundation Morgan. She has no saddlebred in her at all & is scared of absolutely nothing. She has a short little back, a pretty thick neck & looks just like they're supposed to. & she's the best, most loyal and sturdy horse I have ever met! So yah, just backing you up when you said their the best, haha :D
Had a tabiano paint old fashioned Morgan. Sweetest horse. He was 34 when I put into retirement so small children could ride he loved kids. Never haltered he would follow me around like a dog. Western, trail jumping, barrel racing, dressage he did it all. Sulked and glasses eye you if you didnt ride him that day
Thank you for this lovely you tube. The Morgan horse is absolutely famous for its good sense and willingness. If you have one with the classic character it will be a horse you never forget.
I owned a Morgan for 36 of his 42 years on earth, I see so much of him in video and I want find another like him, he took care of me as kid, I will find me another perfect Morgan because no other compares to my kojack
Fear not...you will find a perfect horse. I never thought I would, but I did. The big surprise was it was a quarter horse. I had a Morgan as a kid. Had to choose between him & my baby. I got my AQHA 15 years ago...I never ever imagined that he'd surpass my Morgan's heart, but I know he matched it. Now I'm a Morgan lover, but a quarter horse owner. Good Luck & let your next horse find you.
it is nice to see the morgan as it should be, not all saddlebred-like. judges should judge conformation based on the original standard including neck!.
Thank you for this video!! I am so sick of Saddlebreds inudating other breeds and destroying them. Just get a Saddlebred if thats what you want! This is how Morgans SHOULD look! Stocky versatile, good strong legs. This hyper, long necked pacer, is a horrible shame to the breed. I leased a real Morgan back when I was very young and she did it all. Barrel racing, dressage, pulling, trail, racing, etc. etc.... Just like Figure. :)
I agree. My friend had a Lippett Morgan horse, and as kids, the two of us rode and showed him all the time. What a glorious breed!! It breaks my heart to see the original Morgan line being bred out of existence by people who don't appreciate the real deal.
in the 60's when I was learning to keep a horse between me and the ground, to say that a stock horse was half Morgan was high praise. nice vid very whatchable.
The original Morgans did it 'all' and they did it with style! But not all modern Morgans are as versitle as Figure was. It's great that some breeders are preserving the original type and versitility, and the original bloodlines, isn't it?!
They were Canadian Horses..Justin Morgan's was from Canada..He ripped the breed off and the breed didn't get the recognition it should have gotten like being the foundation horse for the many breeds of today. If you look at the original Morgan and the original Canadian they are identical, and the Canadian was here way before the Morgan.
The horses at 1:00 minute pulling the stage coach were owned by Merle Little--the horse nearest is Anita Belle Gift who I had the pleasure of leasing when I was just a teenager. She was a wonderful horse and I've been in love with Morgans ever since. If anyone knows where her offspring might be I would love to know. Thanks, Fran Wilby
For anyone to pollute the original breed with other blood is a sin. Purebred Morgans are the BEST on their own merit and should be, IMO, kept that way.
love the video! this is what a Morgan should look like. I breed, trained and showed them for 15 years. I got out of horses. Last year figured it was time to get another horse. I was shocked at what they have done (destroyed!) to the Morgan breed. paint morgans? use to be any white above the knee was not allowed! I still love the old style Morgans.. but sorry I'm going with Friesians. They have strict standards on what can be called a Friesian! (save the breed!)
You're right. There are no Class A circuit for Morgans in most places. But there are a ton of baby boomers out there looking for awesome gaited trail horses that want the brains and beauty of the Morgan and so I am dedicated to finding them and providing those horses to people looking. I am a FOSH judge for 14 gaited breeds and within that organization they have open gaited breed classes where Morgans can be shown. It's fun to take any kind of Morgan to a non-Morgan show.
Lovely VideoHow many gaited Morgans have you seen over the years? Figure bred to numerous pacers back in his day and then again crosses to saddlebreds at different points as well. None of these Morgan promotional videos include that discipline. We are, of course raising them and I personally know of hundreds of them. It is so wonderful to be able to have "this" horse and have him be gaited. Our sales are very strong even the last two years. Lovely Video Vali Suddarth Missouri Morgans
Great photos! I recognize some of the old government horses--Flyhawk, General Gates (foundation sire of the U.S. Government farm which was later turned over to the University of Vermont), Upwey Ben Don, Rex's Major Monte, and Junefield (daughter of Mentor and dam of the legendary, Kingston).
These horses have a very regal look. Their personality is evident, even in the photos.I don't know a lot about them, but remember reading about them as a child.
Actually....Morgans did and do (to this day) everything. They were used for farm work, turned around and pulled the family carriage, were saddle horses, race horses (running and trotting), children's and women's horses, hunting/jumping horses. Figure himself was the best logging horse, and the best running and trotting horse in the state, as well as a carriage and riding horse for the family. They are not simply "farm" horses, but an all-round, do everything horse...with sensibility.
Being Lebanese, I guess it's a no brainer that I dearly love Arabians. But how can I not love the beloved Morgan, absolutely gorgeous and such beautiful heads.. There's something very special and unique about these handsome horses. God bless and keep them! ❤💪❤
Now this is what a real Morgan should look like! I have 4 "old" style Morgans and personally I think they are much prettier. Also if you want a horse that looks like a Saddlebred, buy a freakin Saddlebred. It's time we started bringing the "old" style back, they are the true Morgans.
This is a beautiful video!!! Thank you!!! BTW there are a couple clubs out there who preserve the "old" Morgans. the Lippitt club and the Lambert group of course but a brand new club which got started in 2011 and that is The Cornerstone Morgan Horse club it is all about preserving Foundation and high % Foundation. Also where in Michigan are you I also live in Michigan and have these old styles :-)
I really like this video because my horse is a Morgan and he is definately built like the "old style Morgans" like these.... he does not have that "arabian" face and he is not as small as most Morgans are today...
I want an original Morgan horse sometime in the future. My thouroughbred mare would love to have a friend or two, when I move her from the boarding farm to my property. The third horse will most likely be an Arabian.I love your beautiful video! :)
I would ride the Morgan, the Friesian, the Andalusian and the Lipizzaner. I don't know if I ever would be game for an Oldenburg, another awesome horse.
my first show morgan was an original. he is 24 now.. he lost every show in pleasure.. then i got a more saddlebred looking one.. and he is a world champion.. >.<
This horse 🐴🐎 saved me from being troted and kicked by my tenn walking fuc face horse. He got between us then fought him so I could get out of the pen 😢 Jackson ❤was his name
The came from Vermont.....not Canada. They are the first American breed of horse and have influenced every American breed (Saddlebreds, Standardbreds, and Quarter Horses, just to list a few).
My morgan looks like these and not wimpy how the ones are built now. I was told he has quarter mixed in him which would give him an even bigger build than the original ones but I'd take an original mixed with a quarter over the new "models" now.
I love all Morgans no matter what, and to be honest the modern Morgans that win still have a very muscular build. I really hope that breeding long and lanky saddlebredy Morgans doesn't get too popular. Don't get me wrong, ASBs are gorgeous, but Morgan's aren't meant to look like them.
I have a 15.1 Morgan and he is chunky with a good rounded back end. Soft large eyes. He's also affectionate, intelligent with a great sense of humor. These have a strong curved neck. More curved than my guy. But I wouldn't swap his neck out. Not to mention the smooth gaits of the Morgan! My favorite breed not another I would prefer to spend time with on the ground and in the saddle.
The Saddlebred type are mostly seen in the showring. There isn't allowed anymore outcrossings, guess there was some trouble years back when some high priced Morgan blood tests revealed they weren't purebred, lots of tears and people banned from the Morgan Horse Association. Here is an article on the debacle: groups.google.com/forum/#!topic/rec.equestrian/PGVIB1u8Chg
The Morgan Horse is actually the Canadian Horse..Justin Morgan was from Canada. Look at the original Canadian and the original Morgan..they are identical. Canadian horses were the foundation horse for some of these breeds today.
Great point! The original Morgan had a similar look to a classic Arabian, but usually w/heavier muscle, bigger bone & a less chisled head. In recent decades, both breeds seem to have become more 'Saddlebred-esque' at least in the Park classes. The Quarter horse was based heavily on the sprinter type TB from the start, but the lankier look has been around for a few decades too. All three of these breeds have not benefited from selection for more height, IMHO, leading to loss of breed type.
I had Morgans Horses for 11 years and then started my family in "91 and had no time/money. I lost track of the Morgan Horse by laws for a while, but something happened to the Morgan Horse during the '90's and when I checked back in to see my favorite breed it wasn't the same anymore. I could never get a straight answer about that. It was treated like a dark family secret, not to be talked about in public or something. It use to be no while above the knee and all of a sudden every color imaginable was being called a Morgan. I wondered what person or persons had been responsible for messing around with my beloved breed, had a backyard breeder taken over the majestic Morgan Horse? I was very upset about this, still am. If anyone knows the details of story please, share.
@@o0sunsi0o ... My take on it is that people are breeding it with other horses and calling it a full blooded Morgan to make money.. Another words they are scamming people on the breed.. Just saying..
Couldn't agree more. AQHA had to get a Foundation Registry due to SO many what were called Appedix AQHA's out numbered the original horse causing the need for a foundation registry.
Morgans are versatile horses. They will do anything from dressage to driving; and they can jump too. By adding more Arabian into their blood takes away from their driving abilities. Give me a traditional Morgan anytime.
My mare is the best of two breeds. She is a Quarter/ Morgan cross. She has the beautiful Morgan head on a stout Quarter body. You can see some Morgan in her frame but mostly Quarter, and she is built like a tank. Her name, believe it or not, is Figure. Not the name I gave her, I'm her third owner.
Although none are exhibited here, some registered Morgans have intermediate gaits in addition to the walk trot canter. a rack or singlefoot, and a running walk...smooth ride...to learn more about them visit the Gaited Morgan Horse Organization www.gaitedmorgans.org
I believe Mimo Mataj was trying to say that Morgan horses look like Canadian horses, and that Mataj believes they must have originated from them. I don't know what the currently most-accepted theory on the origon of the Morgan is, but doubt many share that theory. But didn't Figure come from Massachusettes? :)
In the earliest photos, there's a distinct 'pony' look to the head, which would explain some of the Morgan's cleverness and character. The line of the neck suggests some Arab too. A pony/Arab mix can produce a wonderful horse.and the Arab is known for its ability to add a certain look to other breeds like the Welsh Mountain Pony.
What horse is picture number #4 and what horse is picture #7? Number 7 looks just like my mare when she was 2 and number 4 looks a lot like her dam. Obviously not actually them but I'm interested in finding out if there's direct relation.
The old type of Morgan horse looks very similar to the Welsh Cob, but without the feather that the Welsh Cob can have. I wonder if Justin Morgan had some Welsh Cob blood in his ancestry. Very possible, as many of the American breeds can trace back to British and European influences.
morgans looking like arab, arab looking more like hackneys, or quarter horses looking more like throughbreds, why have breeds if all your going to do it breed away from original standards to fit what you want. why not just have types instead of breeds? cob type, arab type, racing type, draft types jumpers, hunters, and saddle horses for trail riding. I love the original morgan very much, cobby type yet very pretty too. stick to the original standard I say.
Morgans have become like Arabians these days. They are just equine poodles on the end of a leash meant to be in beauty contests. Only those Morgans that have tried to remain true to the original body type and temperament are true useful and exceptional horses. Just like the only true Arabians are those tgat are desert bred by tribesmen, not those in the stables if the obscenely wealthy Arabs who, like most American breeders, breed for nothing but looks, and unhealthy looks at that. The deeply dished faces that restrict the breathing and legs so spindly they are prone to injury and breaking under trail conditions. Such a shame

@@rltreasure The story goes that the original Morgan horse, Figure (also known as the Justin Morgan horse, after his owner) was out of a mare of Arabian descent known as the "Wildair" or "Wildaire" mare. His sire was believed to be the English thoroughbred (not to be confused with the modern thoroughbred) True Briton, who was owned by a Tory officer. One night, a man named Smith snuck behind enemy lines and stole the horse, riding him behind the American lines, and eventually standing him at stud under the name, "Beautiful Bay." His lineage might be secure had it not been for the fact that, at the time, there was also a Friesan horse standing in the area by the name of Young Bulrock. Although True Briton/Beautiful Bay is the accepted sire of Figure, it is most likely Young Bulrock who is the actual sire. Remember, this is an old story as Figure was foaled in 1789--the same year the Constitution went into effect; the same year the Supreme Court was created; the same year George Washington was elected the first president.

You should have finished with the statue of Figure.
What horse is picture number #4 and what horse is picture #7?
Number 7 looks just like my mare when she was 2 and number 4 looks a lot like her dam. Obviously not actually them but I'm interested in finding out if there's direct relation.
Morgans r the best i have one!!!!!
The old type of Morgan horse looks very similar to the Welsh Cob, but without the feather that the Welsh Cob can have. I wonder if Justin Morgan had some Welsh Cob blood in his ancestry. Very possible, as many of the American breeds can trace back to British and European influences.
You can spot a Morgan with its head held high.
@GoldenOakFarm God the resemblance from Royalton Darkomia to my mare is scary!! Search ATMF Fantasia if you want to see.
My Morgan ........Ulenfield SuperSam......I made the biggest mistake of my life when I sold him to go to college.
morgans looking like arab, arab looking more like hackneys, or quarter horses looking more like throughbreds, why have breeds if all your going to do it breed away from original standards to fit what you want. why not just have types instead of breeds? cob type, arab type, racing type, draft types jumpers, hunters, and saddle horses for trail riding. I love the original morgan very much, cobby type yet very pretty too. stick to the original standard I say.
sad to see the new age Morgan Horse looks like a short saddlebread :/
Nice pictures, but told me nothing about the type.
Good size without being a draft the quintessential American horse
Actually... The Morgan is the FIRST American breed of horse.
the Morgan horse come from the Canadian horse
this is my fav breed look at my name
Yep I love the Morgan's .... Saddlebreds are ok yet the disposition of most are horrible...
wrong!!!

Yeah, he was a bit of a mut. Hence all the versatility of the breed.
Figure was thought to be of thoroubred and arabian breeding
