  • Decorah Eagles UME (unidentified Male Eagle) goes on the defensive today, April 27th, 2018 with his talons out in attack mode. He showed up at the Decorah Eagles Nest a day or two after Dad Decorah went missing. Dad Decorah is still missing. The UME seems to be protecting Decorah Mom , her eaglets and the nest. There was a eagle that got too close to the nest and the UME took swift action to chase off the eagle. The UME clearly had his huge talons aimed at the other eagle in the attack, but we could not see the intruder, but heard him during the attack.

I'm a totally new viewer here. Somehow this got into my recommended videos to watch, and now I am totally hooked! Since I started watching just after Dad disappeared, I am hoping... It's hard to believe I have missed out on so much. Now I'm totally addicted! Who needs clean dishes and carpets?😃

JayKB. Exactly, lol.. I have been hooked for two year's, now. I try to keep up with 5 or 6 eagle cam's and an owl cam.. You will enjoy this, but it can be really sad, at time's. Remember it's nature and the bad thing's happen too. It's been a soap opera this season on the different nest's. Mate's going missing, new female's and male's taking over the nest's, eaglet's falling out of the nest's, fishing wire in the nest's, nonstop!! They are such good parent's and mate for life. The male's are very good to the babies and their mate. Like I said, be prepared to cry, too.. Enjoy

I am not unfamiliar with nature. It is impossible to work with our "humane society" here locally. I used to go and help, but... The total lack of caring finally got to me. Once I bathed and groomed (I used to own 3 pet shops and had to fill in grooming more times than not.). Anyway, I did 10+ dogs for an adoption booth the following day at a local street fair. When I found out that only half of them were even taken (all of which found homes), but it was too much trouble to go back and get the others from the facility (a half hour trip, total. Plus loading time...)... You can guess what happened to the rest of them.... This is a kill "shelter.". That was my last time helping. I would have gone, but I was told my "help wasn't needed" that day working the booth. Since I have had experience working trade show booths....😤😬

Something is going on. I don’t think it’s any coincidence this guy shows up just a few days after Dad disappears.

Ross Kulma I had a similar thought. And there was that awful incident last Sunday in Cleveland I think where a female fought with a nesting female while dad was with the eaglet. She ran the mom off and snatched the baby while dad screamed. Mom later died of the wounds and the new female moved in on dad! This must go on all the time. And remember that due to size differences between the sexes males only fight males and females fight females.
The female likely ate the baby. :-(

pegster6 I have never heard that, before. I assume a female would fight either one. I read that female's are even more aggressive. Hope had a bad fight and died, on the Trio nest. She never returned after the fight, which was on camera, pretty nasty. The two males had to fight intruder's constantly, but raised two chick's like champ's!! They have a new female this season. Hope was never found.

Looks like a sought after Eagle spot due to the fish but this means battles over habitat.

Reading some of the comments about the possibility of the intruder being 'dad', is it reasonable that mum eagle should react as she did? Surely she would have recognised her partner, but I do not know much about eagles' behaviour.

  • @Jandecbs

Is it possible the intruder was Dad? I heard a third eagle vocalizing. What would happen if Dad did come back? Would he be chased off?

  • @fraslavko1

I think tagging the chicks will give more insight into who's who, when they go out on their own. I have heard that sometimes young eagles will return to the nest where they were born..I dont know why.

I recall correctly that the SWFL eagle Mom Harriet had her Suitor M15 also chase off Dad Ozzie when Ozzie tried to return to the nest after an injury

UME is probably the one that injured Dad dechorah, and now is behaving like he owns the nest, I hope he doesn't hurt the chicks

Hoping he is still with mom for next season. He is a great help to her protecting the nest so she can care for her eaglets. He is no threat to her or the eaglets :)

There is ZERO evidence the dad was injured by another eagle.

LMAO. No evidence he hurt Dad and his track record so far has been to protect the nest and surrounding area.

He could have launched after a crow or mockingbird, with an eye to a potential lunch for one, or two, or five. The landing gear come out for offense, defense, and landing, of course. Birds are much harder to catch than fish, though!

I would think that Mom D would have recognized him and not gone into defense mode herself - that's why she spread her wings - not at the UME but the other intruder from what I could see.

We all wish it was dad. One of the blogs states, that after careful and time consuming analyzing of the videos and pictures, this eagle is NOT :( dad.

When I watched it today the eagle that the UME was going after was out of view and couldn't be seen . I would like to think it was Dad also. I have not given up hope that he may return. Over at the Hanover, PA eagles nest the female named Liberty was chased out by a younger and very large female and was probably injured. Liberty had been missing for two weeks. She came back and fought the intruding female, leaving some bloody wounds. Liberty is back with Freedom and the female intruder is gone. So that is why I have my fingers crossed hoping Dad comes home.

Her cries were sad after this took place. Poor Mom has been under a lot of stress. If you watch Mom she seems to be screaming more at the UME as he came back around the nest and landed on the tree. Her eyes were fixed on him. I would like to think it was Dad.

Mary C. S. well in a fight her first sense would be to protect the eaglets in a fight situation.
