This review helped me tremendously. For anyone else that is new to this like I was, something that may be helpful to know is that it is TOTALLY NORMAL for these encounters to take anywhere from 5 minutes to 60 minutes depending on what type of interceptor you are taking on. What this video doesn't show is that you will be probably synthesizing new Flak ammo and Heat Sinks the entire fight. My first medusa solo was last night, took me about 40 minutes, and I synthed heat sinks like 15 times whereas with a cyclops I don't have to synthesize a single thing. The higher level interceptor fights are tests of patience and discipline more than of brute force. Hope this comment helps anyone that is new to this stuff like I am.
The Chieftain is indeed an excellent ship, but to fly it against Thargoids as demonstrated in the video requires an excellent pilot. And you're currently one of the best. You show what can be achieved through regular practise though and it's great encouragement to us all. ō7 CMDR

@@GSquid24 o7 is a salute, a typical greeting or nod of respect between pilots.
This is truly a demonstration of excellent pilot skill but to say that the chieftain isn't good against goids is crazy talk, the thing not just lore wise but gameplay wise was literally purpose-built to kill goids and it's a lot easier to use than the majority of ships under it.
The amount of effort you have put into these videos shows, and the amount of information conveyed to an AXI beginner like me is invaluable. Wonderful to have content creators like you in ED.

Can confirm that the Chieftain is a great ship, 3.5 weeks from first group hunt till solo Medusa, and it's the only ship I fly fa off in.

Very interesting video! I've just fitted out a chieftan for AX combat, I love the krait mk2 and I'm impressed with the flying characteristics.

As long as your ship can fit gauss cannons and armor, it can kill single cyclopees, but I think that is definitely not the case for 5 cyclops.

also - in your latest video (Thatgoid War 35) you were using 2 beams and 4 gauss. no flak. is that going to be better?
This is an awesome piece of work! Just returned to play ED after some years break and updated the computer to perform better (still need to learn how to fly with FA off though) :D I was just wondering which VR set you play ED with? It looks so cool that I might consider switching over to using VR if there is a good set available :) Keep up the good work!!
One question; how many times were the heatsinks refilled withbsay Basilisk?
I killed one of each last night, I know this is a dead comment but maybe this will give you closure randomly one day:
Cyclops: I used about 8 heat sinks and did not have to synthesize any
Basilisk: I had to synthesize about 3-5 times
Medusa: I had to synthesize about 15 times
Hydra: Haven't killed one yet ;)
Do you do videos for consoles? Im having a really hard time understanding fire groups at the moment... i just got my chieftain so now begins the grind to upgrade it. Many thanks for your vids, they are informative to see...

I use the chieftain and I have found it the best ship for combat, ok it may lack a bit of speed and the cockpit is a bit exposed but the manoeuvrability is outstanding I have taken on big ships and the just cannot turn quick enough to do a frontal attack
cool vid as always great job...is it only gauss cannons that can be used for thargoids or can more regular weapons be used as well...?
it's not just gauss cannons that work (though in practice the are the only viable weapon for anything tougher than a basilisk) there are other guardian and AX weapons that also do damage
What about the crusader? If equipped with fighter hanger and ai pilots or friends?

I really love your videos. I'm practicing these cold orbiting techniques on NPCs with my vulture and really looking forward to getting this ship. Meanwhile, is the diamondback Explorer good for this? I do have that ship. I saw your DBS review and wondered whether the DBX would make up for some of its shortfalls? On paper it does have a large Hardpoint, better PD and hull, and runs almost as cool, though less quick and agile
the DBX can be used sure, but it has enourmous drawbacks that the DBS does not suffer from. CMDR Maligno has taken out a Hydra in the DBX so it is a capable vessel but has really bad acceleration and a poor top speed. I would defiantely not recommend it as a beginner ship. it is generally strongly encouraged to go with one of the META ships while learning the ropes in AX combat :)
noob question here, how do you keep reloading the heatsinks? synthesis cut out from the video?

I'm trying to get this ship and combat worked out for myself. Do you only silent run when you are running away to heal or rearm? Or do you do it while firing? I have zero experience using SR so I just dont know.
ok so silent running is just for escaping the 3km range of the thargoid, or passing through it. i have a guide covering the different types of cooling we use here: th-cam.com/video/TpMPMzQFTD0/w-d-xo.html

I heard you’re talking about an issue with the flac launcher and repair limpets on the chieftain but I didn’t understand clearly (I’m french..) .
Is it because of the limpet that my flac shoot left/right like crazy despite of its 100% integrity ?

is that even possible to fly with FA-off like that on a mouse+keyboard? half a second press and i'm spinning uncontrollable :(
The pro tip is to actually use that mouse, stop flying keyboard only.

Hello Commander, Today I just faced my first cyclope thargoid, with the chieftain in FA OFF (absolute disaster) I have doubts and they are which controls should I map and which are useful to move in FA oFF? I use pedals, but I do not have wrist rotation in the Joy, both the vertical / horizontal displacement of the trhusters I do not know when to use them or where to configure them so that the flight is comfortable .. could you make a basic mapping guide of your own controls and in which part of your joy are you placing them that is comfortable for you? Thank you very much you are a sniper!
I've tried your techniques REPEATEDLY, My piloting skills are woeful in comparison, just can't get the orbiting with boost skills down, still practicing though.
I'm starting to think this sort of flying is impossible with a Thrustmaster T-Flight Hotas X and a T-FLight stick :(
yes unfortunately that was the case for me as well, when i saw starting out i had the T flight. the deadzone on the stick is too big in my opinion. tiny adjustments are really important in FA OFF flying and the T flight just wasnt accurate enough to pull it off for me.
I upgraded to a thrustmaster T16000 and it was a very acccurate stick, definately amazing at getting to grips with FA OFF, but breaks so oftern, I ended up going through 2 in around 6 months. I also tried the X52 Pro and again did not find it accurate enough due to the extremely weak spring used in the stick. now I use a VKB Gladiator NXT and it's working on really great,
@@Citizen_Kate oh, I see. Looks like I'm going to have to get serious about getting serious. Right now I have both the Hotas X and the T-Flight because I'm flying dual stick and using the left stick to control thrusters. The Gladiator NXT looks cool. I'll just replace the right T-flight stick with the Galdiator and hopefully I can get good and kill some bugs!!

@@Citizen_Kate Kate, I am learn FA off with a stick at the moment. Not interested in KBM. I am using a cheap logitech X3D it's been with me for 10 years. The deadzones are horrendous. Is the VKB all magnetic sensors like the new airbus stick or? If I am buying a stick I don't wanna deal with the deadzones no more. Thanks. Also interested to know if you use the hat for up down left right thrusts and what you use for forward reverse?
Awesome review and combat skills! The build is missing one component though: a fuel scoop :-/ otherwise how to get to Thargoid infested systems? Please don't say Fleet Carrier :-)
haha you are gonna hate my reviews - travel is not part of thargoid combat (use a travel ship then ship transfer) and so most of my AX buidls have a 2D FSD to save weight and power (they literally CANNOT jump). there are other reviewers that cater for more general builds though :) I would suggest giving CMDR Avasa a watch instead ;)
@@Citizen_Kate haha not at all on the contrary I love your reviews and seriously some mad pilot skills that I need to learn :-) I think it makes sense to pay for the transfer to truly maximize the AX potential, thanks for pointing it out.

@@Citizen_Kate I completed that build but mine has 102% power usage and the edsy page says it should be 101%, what am I doing wrong?
So far, I have only had success killing Cyclops with the Krait Mk II. I might try the Chieftain out and see if it works better. Unfortunately I don't think I will be able to take on anything stronger than a Cyclops using my mouse and keyboard. FA off doesn't work well enough for me to cold orbit, which seems essential for killing anything stronger.

I'm pretty sure it's been asked any number of times. Is there any specific reason for not performing a xeno scan prior to opening up on the poor defenseless thargoids?
I wouldn't even run a 1d module support. as soon as it brakes modules start taking damage.
1-2d module supports are better off Hull supports or anything else.

yeah but it's not just about the integrity of the Module Reinforcement. the actual percentage of protection to the modules stacks so even with the smallest GMRP you get that extra stack in module projection even if the GMRP itself doesnt have a lot of integrity.
As soon as that 1d brakes modules will start taking damage. don't take long to brake a 1d.
test what i'm saying and you will see you will be doing less module repairs
well you must of course go with whatever loadout works for you :) my testing against hydra has shown the extra protection stacking to allow almost no module damage (it gives 94 percent projection vs 85 iirc), where before with only the two 4's i was having to repair multiple modules. your milage may vary of course. i'm good with the 3 GMRPs though ;)
so shield is obsolete? Even for first timer?
Why guardian module/hull reinforcements. Aren't engineered ones better?
Guardian module reinforcements offer better protection from lightning strikes than regular module reinforcements. Hull reinforcements are G5 engineered for maximum hull protection.
what about the anaconda? is it good?
yes, it is good but the repair limpet bug it has hinders it a lot. If that were fixed it would be someithng very special indeed :)

Any chance you could grab a second body to do some spectator cam? the manoeuvring you are doing is not so noticeable from the cockpit view, i can imagine it looks pretty epic from a 3rd person perspective.

I can't get the Chieftain to work for me. I have a lot more success with the Challenger and Krait II.
i think it will be different for everyone, best advice is to go with what suits you :)

lmao I play in VR too and didn't even notice, just seems natural to me that you are able to, you know, look around and maintain awareness when you're not directly facing the target lmao, now THAT is off putting.
You talk about these ships like they were amazing from the ground up..... without any engineering or guardian weapons they are a joke against even a cyclops...
yeah you need engineering and guardian weapons - this is the way of AX
