Lyrics:
I went dumpster diving
Did it for a living
I did more than surviving
Yeah, I made a killing
Off of what I could find
And I never met somebody like you
Lit up by the glow of a trash can fire
Was the face of a woman that I hadn't desired
Sometimes, what you're looking for doesn't transpire
But there she was
Tween the old tin foil
Over half a gallon of some used motor oil
What looks to be a broken heater coil
Didn't know what I was searching for
Til I found you
I went dumpster diving
Did it for a living
I did more than surviving
Yeah, I made a killing
Off of what I could find
And I never met somebody like you
Sometimes what's tossed just isn't worth saving
But in this case, I think you're amazing
You've got my cold heart a-blazing
I'm so glad that
What's one man's trash
Is another one's treasure
I'd go anywhere,
As long as we're together
There isn't a storm
That we couldn't weather
And that's why we'll go
Dumpster diving
Doing it for a living
We're more than surviving
Yeah, we make a killing
Off of what we can find
I never met somebody like you before
I went dumpster diving
Did it for a living
I did more than surviving
Yeah, we made a killing
Off of what I could find
I never met somebody like you
Never met somebody like you

Make no mistake.... Corporate America throws away tons of fresh hot food. This is how some folks eat. What's funny is Manny times the food is still steaming hot....thank you Lord Jesus for the food in my stomach the roof over my head and the shirt on my back.
I'm a 31 year old mechanic with tears in my eyes! This song hit bro. Me and my grandma would do it time to time. Miss her so much. Love you grandma
Memories come flowing home
Please edit your comment for the disgusting lil filthies reading here you might wanna be more specific when you say ‘do itI’ .. when I read my grandma and I would DO IT from time to time … almost sobered me up!
Same here. I miss my grandma so much. She and I would ride around on Saturday mornings, hit up a few yard sales, then we would drop by a few of her favorite dumpster spots. She was so fun. Made me laugh harder than anyone else I know.
I'm a 31 year old diesel mechanic too brother I feel ya.
I still go junking and my kids like it some.
Got me a nice goodwill clearance center with the bins of random stuff its all $1.75 per pound. Weird fun mystery shopping
Bro, to hear you say that this song didn’t connect to audiences….breaks my heart. You’ve clearly been jaded by the big machine in Nashville bc this song is absolutely incredible, relevant, genius, and you beat me to the title LOL. Been working on the same title for years. Kudos! I’m a huge fan
Honestly the best thing about TH-cam is getting to hear singer/songwriters like this. I subscribed and look forward to hearing more this talented human being.
Agreed!
Im 35 in two days, my father was s scrap metal guy most gis life . He never made it seem like it wasnt a blessing , may he rest in peace now
Life * Survival, *last breathe, a blessing...
hes proud of u dawgie
My older brother passed away just a few days ago march 1st. When we were kids we would go dumpster diving all the time find bikes and stuff clean them up and have new toys lol. I found this song about a week before he passed and really enjoyed it and now I enjoy it that much more. Thank you.
I’m sorry for your loss.
I’m 37 years old and you just made me forgive my dad for what I thought was embarrassing. Thank your Dad for taking care of us.
One man’s trash is another one’s treasure is a way of life for some of us
Don’t stop singing this cause there’s ALWAYS people who will relate. 🥰
Those who don’t relate…they don’t have to listen.
🥰
We did dumpster diving in La Jolla CA, rich people would set good things on the side of their trash cans. They knew that people would pick it up and resell. We did pick up stuff for many years, and proud of it. Most of our family moved up from being low income and now middle class. I never look down at people who do it now. Never forget where you came from!
Gave me goose bumps. My first wife and I used to do this in order to help with the bills but we called it road shopping.
I call it tweakin
Man this is crazy, I grew up poor riding around with my father in his pickup truck looking for scrap metal and things to fix we lived out of dumpsters practically beautiful song I hope you really blow up
I think you're underestimating just how relatable this really is. Great work man
So true
Facts
I used to take scrap with my grandfather every Saturday going to breakfast the whole deal I would do anything to have those days back. Thank you for bringing back good memories.
❤ Another man's trash is another man's treasure ❤
I recently “dumpster dived” for some lumber to the chagrin of my grandkids. My granddaughter now thinks that’s how u acquire your lumber… she’s 6 and calls it “trash swimming”😂
LMAO. If you do it at the grocery store, it's call BEAR DODGING! 😊
Trash swimming ought to be an Olympic event!
@hermajessd, out of the mouths of babe's. LoL. Love that Trash Swimming 😂.
I LOL’d
I am now and forever calling it "trash swimming" !! Thank you so much for the belly laugh today!! 🤣🤣🤣
Nothing like dumpster diving. The ultimate cheap thrill. Been doing it for years being the construction business. Thanks.
Quality time is quality time. I grew up around mechanics and farmers and learning how to fix things that were broke or making something never seen before. Some folks called us rednecks, trash, whatever. But I learned a lot and those lessons won't go away. Great song.
The best country songs give you wet eyes and a chuckle at the same time.
This makes me miss my dad so much. Cherish your family, they're gone in an instant.
I remember when I was a little girl. We were visiting my Aunt and Uncle in rural Washington 1960s. My Aunt says y'all want to go to "dump day?" Well we get there . Everyone that was tossing real debris just kinda threw it down in the hole if possible. Everyone else tossing what might be usable backed up and piled it on the edge. I swear it felt more like a park and swap meet . There were as many folks looking at dumping. And most dumping were also. looking. My sister and I were wandering. Some lady calls us over , and says "I think I have something you might like?" She pulls these two little pristine white Easter hats , sun bonnets out and gives them to us . We were thrilled ! We were poor , 3 other siblings , had lost our Dad . We held on to those for years . Do yeah "dump day ," is a good memory for me .
Yep. I recall that getting banned for “safety” about the same time as Lawn Darts.
With all due respect brother. This is 10 times better than what’s on Spotify. You don’t need all the production. This is amazing.
Thanks TH-cam for putting this guy in front of me. So awesome! Love this sound, brother
Such a talented young man. An up-and-coming John Prine.
Holey smokes! What a voice. This is great
Me and my brother did a lot of dumpster diving when we were young. Still do from time to time. My dad and grandpa were always bringing home junk. We scrapped metal, fixed up old tractors and mowers, weed whackers and what not. We worked on a lot of cars. Scrapped in my brothers SS Monte Carlo lol. Then when I turned 16 I built my old ford truck out of used parts, swapped in a manual transmission, and we hauled a lot of metal in that thing. Good times man
I absolutely LOVE this song! My dad and I dumpster dived when I was little, now I'm older and it's one of my favorite past times with my husband. We got our 13 year old daughter enjoying it as well.
Mr Walker I'm 55 ....I know your words an lived them... you are amazing ❤
Right on brother, my whole family does the same thing. I always tell my children that someday they will look back and cherish the happy memories we made together. I truly appreciate the song and Grandpa!
I tagged along with my grandparents as they did this back then when I was a youngling😄, I miss them. 🥲
Joshua, thanks for stirring up those memories from when I was a kid. I would go up to Potter County in Pennsylvania to a little town called "Millport". I would spent the summers with my GrandPa, he was the local trash man, he would use his Chevy pickup, and I rode with him, his name was Frank Treat 1904 - 1979. We collected glass to take to the glass plant, and recycle things we could fix up and sell. I'm 58 now, and my GrandPa went onto the glory of God in 1979 when I was just 13. It was the worse lost for me up to that point, I've since lost my parents and my first wife Denise; I'm grateful for the time I spent with all those who went on before me, and its those memories that will hold me up until I see them all again in Heaven.
Hey man, I appreciated you taking the time to share your story. Greetings from L.A....I'm a sucker for real life and what it gives us. Blessing to you and yours and may you live long and prosperous. ✌️
Thanks for sharing brother. I’m from blue collar Allentown, but been in the mtns of NorCal for some time now. Pa represent. Thanks for sharing. All ways we keep it moving !
@@rkaicfunkfulwhatcha doing in the mountains of norcal? Is the harvest bountiful hahaha
@@xconnorgrillox homesteading bro, hardest challenge in life to date. Yet not sure what other life there is to live!
@@rkaicfunkful My family came from Baltimore and came back to PA in '78, I'll never live in the city again, like to visit, won't live there. Pine cones, clear water, and fresh air run throughj my vains. I get so high off of just walking througjh the woods. I love sitting and being very quiet, just to hear the songs of nature. In my opinion, you can't look at nature and tell me there is no God, my heart and spirt, know different.
Joshua Ray Walker has an extremely surreal and advanced relationship of sound between his country sensibility, and something almost on the edge of surreal folk, like John Prine or Paul Simon and even Sufjan Stevens.Very inventive and melodic young artist.
Nice correlation! Love John and Sufjan.
John Prine, LEGEND.
This ain't a "miss"..!
Those who can relate to this will find ya, and I'm darn sure there is enough of us to see this and hopefully get ya somewhere...
Your voice is so beautiful and rich Just AS YOUR SOUL… I was HOMELESS FOR A MINUTE not many people know my life story I will share this WITH YOU AS YOU ARE A PLEASURE TO LISTEN TO …
God blessed me with you SO I KNOW YOU TO BE BLESSED BY WE.
M
Awesome song, it brings back fond memories of the trips with my dad to the dump. If I helped load and unload, I was allowed to scarf a few treasures before we left. Still have the biography about George Washington Carver I saved 60 yrs. ago.
That's my new favorite song.
The people who have NEVER dumpster dived, aren't down to earth yet.
Someday we OG Divers will teach them a thing or two about surviving.
ITS AN AWESOME MEMORY YOU SHARED AND VERY WORTH THE TIME YOU TOOK TO TELL IT.
Brother is talented. I want him to be around for years. But, just like Jellyroll, and Chris Stapleton, I stand concerned for their longevity with us here on this earth. Brother, with care I say do whatever it takes to fight whatever demons you must be get your health back in order. All the money isn't worth a thing if your health ain't right. - I believe in you. -
Well said
Thought you were gonna say don’t sell out 😂
Me too 😂@@AnthonyTXskates
as toronto's top stamp diver, "Dougster Diver", i LOVE this song!!!! Play on, you courageous cowhand!
Love it!! I’ve got a friend went dumpster diving and came up with a frostbitten little puppy!! 😮😢
Took her home, loved her to health, & she’s the best dog ever!
just now seeing this kid. good music. we must preserve music.
Did this with my grandma and her husband. Junk packed into the trunk of a late 70’s Buick. Trunk tied closed with yellow poly rope to the bumper.
Dang, those trunks are huge, you could hold a lot of junk in those trunks!
That is a killer song loved it... Your grandpa is so proud of you... All Blessings to You... I'm so glad that I met you this morning here on TH-cam!
Its been awhile since I’ve herd real country music keep up then good tunes
This dude sounds authentic, great voice !
@Joshua Ray Walker ~ You made a wonderful song. I’ve been dumpster diving since I was 8 or 9 years old. My dad took my younger brother and me diving with him. I was instantly hooked. Since then I’ve become a diver, digger, saler, and a junkie. I do fairly well for myself and my family.
Thank You for playing for us. 👍👍
My first experience with dumpster diving was with my grandfather... I was 9 years old .. I am 39 years old now and I still dumpster dive and I've met some incredible people and found the most amazing treasures while doing it. This song made me cry I love it
My kind of people. God bless you brother.
Glad this wandered into my youtube tonight. Switched over to spotify to do a full listen tonight and Tomorrow. Its hard for me to find totally new artists ill actually listen to.
Damn what a voice. 😮. Beautiful
Fuck yeah. This is awesome. Thank you for reminding me. I had all but forgotten the times I spent diggin in old dumps with my parents b4 they split. They killed it off the bottles we would find. I want to go back and dig around again. It’s been almost 30 years. Thank you.
I'm a 69 year old American man living in Iowa. I'm a second generation proud dumpster diver. My Father is 94. 20 years ago he went to specialty wood store dumpster on a Sunday when they were closed looking for exotic wood scraps. They had a BIG DUMPSTER. He let himself down in and started finding the goid stuff. When he had what he came for he looked up and realized he he had no way out. After stacking scraps for an hour, and several failed escapes, he did get out. If you go in have a plan to get out. Ha.
My grandfather used to take me to the dump w him...best days of my life❤
Dumpster diving is a favorite pass time and still is.
When my brothers and i were young we used to dumpster dive at fleamarkets found some meat stuff. Im 37 now and i still cheack dumpters at work. Good junk at a shipyard. Great song thanks

The message takes me back brother thank you

My oldest adored diggin in junk. Hes 19 now, and trying to be his own sort of snob....but sometimes.I see that little spark still..❤❤❤❤ love this
Holy shit man!!! Such a pure voice. Love it!!!!!!!
I was born in a barn in Texas. I never went to school until 6th grade. My early years were in the sticks and backwoods. Dumpster diving was a way of life. In this modern world it seems so far away, like a actual different life. This song hit me in a part of my soul I didn't know was still there. Thank you
I have a friend who’s very used to living lean, and she taught me a lot about getting through tough times. We had a dumpster diving route we’d take around town, late at night on a weekend when the local college’s kids had just moved out and they’d thrown away small appliances and clothing and furniture and whatever all else they didn’t want to take with them. Sometimes we’d have to be quick because it was just starting to rain. Sometimes we’d get spooked by headlights and think for a second the cops had caught us 😂
For me, it’s a pastime of the defiant - those who refuse to stop seeing value in a thing just because someone else couldn’t see it, or couldn’t put the effort in that it deserved. I think my friend was that way about me too. I’m damn lucky to know her.
You are a talented man with an amazing voice! Keep singing!!
Very good song! Nice feel for lyric structure! I like songs with a story and lyrics that trip the tongue. Good stuff!
Joshua, SUBBED, keep it up man, you got SOUL in your sound. God Keeps you.
Instant classic. This song will be looked back on. Mark my words.
If it's even by me and you that's a lot ...
I love that
awesome...good healing mate.......jah bless from germany
You are so talented and your soul is SO beautiful ♥️🙏
Grew up in a holler in WV. Didn't go dumpster diving, but Pawpaw went up to the head of the holler where folks illegally dumped trash and junk, and salvaged anything he could repurpose. Taught me a lot about life .
I love you West Virginia folk! A special breed. Thanks for sharing
Fantastic song ol'son.. thanks
Yes sir. I'm 41 yrs old grew up in Va. Poor but hey the things we'd find
OMG wow your voice is awsome. Your voice and words brung back memory. Thank you. When we would pick up cans on sandy back roads in Fla. Fight them gaters 😂. Thats school money.
Brilliant. Authentic. Beautiful.
I thought that song was written about my dad. If dumpster diving was an Olympic sport, he would've medaled.
My dad can get more trash than your dad
My dad’s the Michael Phelps of dumpster diving
@@brandonjohnson1334bullshit my dad can out swim your dad in any dumpster any day
