I understand Russell’s frustration, but he also needs to understand that he can’t treat people so poorly, then expect them to want him to win because they don’t personally see him as a worthy winner and that’s not surprising. I enjoy him on screen, I would never, as a player vote for him to win. A lot of people mess about in their alliance and still win because they aren’t just arrogantly nasty. Whether he deserves a win more than others is irrelevant, you can’t understand the rules enough to go onto a show and then demand they be changed for your version of gameplay, instead of creating an effective gameplay within the rules already set. Again though, entertaining.
The confessionals really showcase exactly why Natalie won. Russel is very emotional, vindictive and every reason he lists is an emotional one. Natalie is calm, logical, and has very gameplay related reasons, even if the gameplay is don't be on the wrong side of her alliance. She was on the correct side of every single vote, and only got any votes cast against her once, and that was the same time she found the crack and saved Foa Foa from being picked off one by one. She knew about every vote, and voted correctly, meaning she was completely in the know the entire game, no one made any big or meaningful moves (at least not successfully) without her. No one wanting to ever vote her out is a testament not to her being weak and a goat, but to her social game of becoming close to everyone. Even when they targeted Foa Foa, it was never her because they liked her, she was pleasant to be around at camp. And that is incredibly good social gameplay. Natalie set aside her own feelings to do the vote that was in her best interest (unlike Russel, who again was very emotional every vote), and put worth behind the connections she made with people and kept her word. She made such strong emotional/social connections yet didn't let how she may have felt about someone change her vote if she couldn't influence the majority about it in advance. And she clearly saw each of the people she eliminated as a person rather than a pawn. And her last vote, between Mick and Brett really showed it as well. She had formed a strong connection with Brett at the end, but if she had voted for Mick instead, she likely would have lost to Brett with the sheer number of Galu on the jury and how liked he was, or it would have been a MUCH tighter vote. Voting him out solidified her win.
There has also never been a season before or since where any contestant had been forced to play the absolute barest bare bones of a game. She had literally zero room for error. But it was a blessing in disguise, as it kept Russell's heat-seekers off her and protected her against the need to explain any kind of blindside. I should also add that Natalie was the _only_ player that never advocated for Russell's elimination. In fact, and just look at her interaction with Betsy for proof, she was fully active in the cause of protecting him since the start.
The confessionals also revealed that Kelly was 100% riding Russell's coattails. Half of her explanations amounted to "this is who I was told to vote for".
@@Shutterbun4 That's mostly cuz she was using Russell as a meatshield. Her belief is that "the person with the most jury votes is who wins." and everyone, EVEN JEFF, knew he wasnt winning jack shit.
Russel turning his head to face the camera like a super model in Jeff's predictions is so funny to me. I just imagine a photography director off camera being like you're evil you're evil give the camera a little smirk yeah. you're powerful and malicious russell give us a lil pout.
You have to be willing to go to rocks for your alliance, otherwise you'll lose numbers advantage and you'll all be out next, which is what happened here.
@@mildtotemperate Yeah especially when your competition is willing to do that. But John is an asshole for not taking responsibility for Laura going he wasnt owning that he did that.
The season that changed survivor for ever. It started the end of bitter juries, made the game much more strategic, and idols became a big deal and were found without clues.
Juries can definitely be bitter, and they have every right to be, but still, this season didn’t change that. But Russell definitely changed the strategic game for good
You forgot to mention how it made all future players inately aware how important a good social game was, and why we no longer see any intentionaly sadistic players anymore.
russell change the pace of the game everyone started to play fast because of him the jury are defiantly less bitter because they get more fans to play and they understand the game unlike before where they wanted to stay with the people they first started with
Idk. There is a high chance that juries can still be bitter. It's just that hardly any FTC player treated them as bad as Russell did. Had Russell been just a bit humble, he would've probably won Samoa.
Parvati said in her post HvV interview that Russell brainwashed the audience to want to root for for Russell because they kept showing him over everyone else all of the time, making him the only person people would want to root for. Even she didn't like him and she was his main ally. Seeing people who still think Russell should have won Samoa and Heroes vs Villains, she's probably right.
13:00 this is what bothers me.. in Russell's preseason interviews and even some of his early game confessionals, he seemed to understand that there is a social game involved. That you can't just blatantly be an asshoIe to people's faces. So what happened? How did he forget that part?
His arrogance played up that because he didn’t want to admit that he just played a pretty crappy game where survivor is concerned. Getting to the end and winning aren’t the same thing and he didn’t seem to understand that you need more than a goat besides you to win. He blamed everyone else for that. Giant man baby.
He didn't forget it in Samoa he just got a bitter jury. In Samoa his social game wasn't great but it wasn't bad either, the only juror who wouldn't even consider voting for him was Laura. In HvV he was deprived from doing two seasons back to back and got hangry after the merge and spoiled his own strong pre-merge performance.
Like he had Foa Foa voting however he wanted the entire pre-merge without using idols and he even showed that he was capable of being diplomatic and doing what his alliance wanted when he let Ben Browning go.
Something I was hoping to clarify about Natalie is that in a confessional not shown on the show she refers to being called "Survivor Barbie" I've always wondered who called her that.
In the confession video at the end, only Brett has a positive commentary from Russell. So, I think he respect that guy much for being such a game player!
@@stogerat I mean she used Russell in a smart way though. She knew he was unliked by people. Of course she got lucky, but every winner does. Russell made the same dumb mistake with Sandra.
Natalie was granted a measly 15 confessionals FOR THE ENTIRE DAMN SEASON!! And that record _still_ stands! By contrast, Russell received more than seven times as many, a record I think also still stands.

Natalie is the least deserving winner ever, she did nothing, had no guts, and only got won because she was nicer than Russell. You should never win by being nice and by outwitting, outplaying, and out lasting which Russell did and Natalie didn't. She didn't even deserve to be on WaW which is why she wasn't.
