Production cost for the newer generation GPUs is most likely cheaper than previous generations because of the chiplet design which wastes a lot less silicon when there is a defect. So even if the perfomance did not really increase for the mid tier, the main reason for their existence is to make AMD more money compared to selling last gen GPUs with monolithic dies.

    • @BarAlexC
      @BarAlexC ปีที่แล้ว +4

VRAM prices plummeted. It was $6...$10/GB for last gen and now is $2...$5/GB (allegedly; from sources in the industry).
+ MCDs are also N6 (same production line and process as 7nm) so I suppose it's about the same price:
      -RX6700XT has a 335 sq mm die on 7nm.
-RX7800XT (and 7700XT) has a 200 sq mm die(CCD) on 5nm and ~146 sq mm die(4x 36.6 sq mm MCDs) on the N6 die (same as 7nm process). Total 346 sq mm.
16GB now are $30...$40 cheaper than 12GB then. I can't imagine the die difference being more than that so they'd at least balance out, if not be cheaper now.
Just like Nvidia (where 4070 is a 3060 on N4 instead vs Samsung 8nm and some extra $30 for better power delivery and cooling - but $50...$60 cheaper VRAM-, but jumps from a $330 to a $600 MSRP) AMD also tries to milk us...and people praise it because it's not as bad...
If anything, 7800XT should be a 7700XTX (named appropriately for that die size, if we consider removing non XT naming altogether, because it's confusing vs Ryzen non X) and cost

  • @ReinQuest
    @ReinQuest ปีที่แล้ว +11

I just want to say that your performance review is great. I was reading a benchmark review for Starfield and all they did was talk about how both nividia and AMD’s top cards were barely playable frame rates.
Guess that’s the long way of saying “thanks for doing good journalism”.

The price does get wilder in Europe. Here, in the Czech Republic, the Sapphire PULSE version costs 12,237 CZK (537 USD) while the 7800xt Sapphire PULSE costs 13,965 CZK (612 USD), making the difference 75 USD, which is already looking much better. If you're asking why the price is so high compared to America: Tax is included (21% VAT) and the cost of shipping it here and the customs at the border etc. that the shop had to pay to get the card here and sell it also bumps the prices up.

I picked up this exact model 7700 XT for two reasons; It checked all the boxes for me (VRAM, TFLOPS, aesthetics, etc.) and... Amazon Prime allows you to pay over 12 months. 😅 So yes, it's overpriced (even with the included Starfield Premium that I really wanted), but for essentially $40 USD per month it fits nicely into my budget and it's a great upgrade from my old 5600 XT. The only reason I didn't spend more to get the 7800 XT was the Hellhound edition simply wasn't available on Amazon at the time. Also, I plan to under-volt and make it as quiet as possible, so there's that.
Hope that provides some insight into the thought process of someone who purchased this one. Thanks for the great review, as always!

So, in the UK at least, 7700XT is £430, 7800XT is at least £490 (for the cheapest of either). So, a 14% price increase for roughly (based on average ratios of minimum and average frame rates for both) 15% performance difference at 1440p. So yes, if you're at 4K it makes a bigger difference, but at 1080p or 1440p it's just a budgetary question really.

On the other hand my little brother needs a laptop for generic purposes such as editing and school work, therefore buying a laptop will help my dad on not spending more money to give my brother a laptop and instead give mine. That's why I'm considering a laptop other wise PC is always the answer for gaming or work.
      Lets start with my options:
      Laptops : Its either a HP Victus 16 S0009AX (Ryzen 5 7640HS + RTX 4060 + 512 GB NVME) for $957
      or
      HP Victus 16 S0010AX (Ryzen 7 7840HS + RTX 4060 (120 TGP) + 1 TB NVME) for $1074 (Also tell me which is better from these 2)
Now another context : I live in Indonesia and the HP Victus 16 versions in my country is as following, and i think on the Ryzen 7 version theres an option to upgrade the storage or so I've been told, both of them has rtx 4060 in the specs i put above and better screen (100% sRGB + 300 nits)

I know this video is 6 months ago but now 6 months after where I live it's atleast 120 bucks apart.
    Choosing the most lower tier
RX 7700XT to lower tier RX 7800 XT.
And I think the bare minimum for gaming these days is 8GB or 12GB
16GB and beyond is overkill for my 1440p gaming and some small video editing.

Hey, writing from Russia. So, to explain the the situation: for me right now 50 pounds would kinda be a big deal, seeing as the economy is down the shitter (I guess I don't have to explain that invading neighboring countries isn't good for it, especially when your country is no more than a giant gas station). Most people here who buy such GPUs usually either save for a long time or take loans and pay them off for half a year. Most Russian millennials and gen Z struggle to pay rent right now. It's pretty much the same for other countries with fucked up economy like, say, Mexico. Young people there want to have good things in life, but getting them takes a lot of time and effort, so saving a little even on big purchases is always preferred, cause those 50 pounds usually mean 2 weeks of eating decent food (rather than resorting to instant noodles) and being able to pay for public transport.

No real consideration for the hotspot temps going up when you say you would let the gpu core get to 75c for a lower rpm on the fan. I don't go by anything other than edge/hotspot temps these days, unless amd changed what temp the fan goes by, then im pretty sure its based off hotspot temps. So realistically youre happy with 95c hotspot temps. Some gpus have lower differnce in temps between gpu and hotspot, but i have seen some gpus with more than 20+ c differences in temps, so by your logic they could be running well over 100c. Yeh they can sustatin that vbut no one wants too. I do enjoy your content but we all have an experiance to share.

Why does the 7700XT exist? On AMD 1st degree pricing so the channel, signals to the channel and sellers, to find the right price including in relation to 7800XT that is not a 1st degree regulating price cap but a 3rd degree 'run end' price on some amount of consumer supply pulled ahead into producers ramp to set $499 run end price that the AIBS and channel sellers basically said no to and sellers priced initial in the $569 to $599 range and today into the $650 to $750 range for 7800XT. You Mr. PC Centric are also aware the premium feature, material, cooling, OC cards across any individual grade SKU meant to cost : price offset the so said MSRP cards to secure a higher average margin across the individual SKU grade line up.
7800XT at $499 turns out not to be a regulating price cap, XFX attempted on insufficient supply albeit I estimate AMD has 10 M RDNA lll to clear out through end of the year. 7800XT at $499 is actually back to 3rd degree consumer discriminatory 'fake PR pricing' and AIBs and channel said no, moved to first degree pricing and upped 7800XT price to between $569 and $599 and now on the shortage of 7800XT are offered in the $650 to $750 range.
7700XT which was first degree priced out the gate enabling channel sellers to find the right price was also priced up by sellers + $50. Out the gate most 7800XT appear on SI PC listings went into prebuilt and I suspect majority of all N32 prebuilt PCs will show up in 30 to 60 days including 7700XT.
Seems N3_ is now being kit in R7K CPU + GPU OEM and board house that include design manufacture graphic card AIBs in sales bundles who will now control brokerage of whatever dGPU component surplus there might be to second tier card producers.
There's a shortage of cards because the components went to design manufacturers for prebuilts. In three to four weeks it will be known if 78/7700XT is as prolific as the Rx 7600 launch. mb

i am mostly considering this card because i can get it for like 90 dollars (translated from local currency) less than the 7800 xt
and because honestly i dont play many demanding games
mostly just cyber, starfield and rdr2 and i want a 1440p card that may not require fsr or dlss in those few games (never touch ray tracing)
    currently sitting on a 4060
though considering i can use some overwork hours and cover like 100% of the cost buying it through work or like 70% of the cost if i get the 7800xt the 7800xt does look like something safer in case i wanna play more demanding games later on

I own the 7700 and for me it is the 7800 "light" version. But is it a bad card? No way, it is a very good card which fullfils a niche on the market. For me the card is too good to be compared with the 4060, it has similar performance like the 4070 but without the aim to beat it. Moreover it seems to have similar performance as the 6800 gpus. Why did I buy it? Because the 7800 was around 100 Euros more epensive and I needed a card which fitted my setup of power supply - performance - budget ratio.
So, if someone asks me this card is for buyers who are price sensitive and look for the most efficient way to have the best performance possible. The goal is not to have the best of the best setup to beat the rest, but to compete with the best!
