Nothing he couldn't do with a guitar, nothing he couldn't play, and at the highest possible level, gone way too soon. Deserving of a perennial number 1 all time spot.
I like the way he still paid tribute to Jimi's original solo before going into his own thing. Not only a great guitarist but I should think a nice guy too. What a sad loss.👍
Just for fun, I played around with the playback speed the only way I could tell something was different at higher speeds was because the drums and bass were faster. At .75 speed, his playing was just as clean, but the odd rhythmic groupings were more apparent. To me, that says that Shawn Lane reached the human ear's speed barrier. Some people can in fact play faster than him, but most people wouldn't be able to tell. That's incredible.
When I first heart of Shawn like 12 13 years ago and was a teenager shredaholic I didn't really get him either. It was incredibly fast but nonsense most of the time. As I have grown both musically and age and have taken a seat back I realize more of what he was and understood what genius was inside him. Shawn really is a monster musician is every sense. Musically, phrasing, theory, ear, technique, composition. Almost perfect. And his control and knowledge is put into his outside ventures
The thing is he was this good when he was 13 or 14. Saw him in his kid band Savage at Audubon Park. Everybody knew Shawn was special. His rythum guitarist Tate Yuan was great also. Got the chance to talk with Shawn a few times. Good Dude.
Perfectly mimic? Hendrix was not a shredder, but had much more expression, tone, etc. Shawn plays a lot of notes, very fast. But there have been many shredders, fast jazz and country players. After awhile, you forget the music and just watch him as a guitar machine operator. Or a fast typist.
Lots of guitarists can mimic henderix but there is no point to that if you want to hear henderixes version then it just makes sense to listen to the origanal the point is to imbue your own style to the music and make something new.
His playing almost sounds like a video game or something to me! That is not a knock Shawn was mind blowing it is just so fast it sounds insane or out of this planet!

Thing about Lane that people don't understand is that once you really break down what he's doing to normal human speeds, it's like you took really melodically complex and interesting music with beautiful rhythmic phrasing and just dialed up the tempo to 4000 beats per minute until it sounds like a computer frantically trying to spit out lines of code just to keep up.
