    Shawn was at my house one night as we talked in the kitchen and my dad walks in and I introduce them and say ''dad, Shawn plays guitar'' My dad replies and said '' Guitar huh? so, are you any good?'' Well first I just wanted to die and melt into the floor but Shawn being the sweet,kind person he was said '' Well, I think so'' DO WHAT/// think so??????? OMG how down to Earth without a trace of ego is that.. Because that night in my kitchen I am pretty sure the Earth changed its rotation and it orbited around Shawn. Shawn ,even though gone many years now is still a much better player in death than most players are in life..

    I hate when I see ratings of guitarists etc ... because I don t believe ratings belong in music, ... but Shawn. Shawn was so fantastic that I can reach the point where I can say, .. that considering everything, ... basically he was the best there ever was. Yes. I think so. He was. Shawn.

    The man was so much before his time and so underrated. He had the speed that was ungodly and the ability to be melodic as well. Unfortunate that we no longer get to hear him today. The first time I heard his version was incredible. Still moves me as much today as it did in the past. I love players that are super fast but also have the ability to be super melodic. Miss him dearly.

    Shawn Lane is different even in timbre, we feel his feeling in the first notes. What a wonderful version alternating the guitar channel clean with distortion, and making small improvisations that are unique and sublime... Shawn respected Hendrix's version, but elevated it to an interpretation never seen before, one of the best ever made... and the other members were very good players.

    • @Kondzio717
      @Kondzio717 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Datanditto No, it's rather "this apple tastes sweeter than orange". Two totally different fruits, neither worse or better, but you still can tell which one is sweeter. If you wanna be a smartass and use comparisons, at least make sure, that they are accurate.

    • @Datanditto
      @Datanditto 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Kondzio717 Not sure you get it..
      Listen, both the orange and the apple can make juice. The thing is- apple juice is never fresh squeezed only from concentrate, however- orange juice can be fresh squeezed OR from concentrate, now why is that?
      And Ive had apples that taste like what ballocks smell like and oranges that taste sweeter than mommas honey. It depends on whether you had something sweet to eat prior to tasting the fruit that seems sweetest in this case the apple for you but you should always try to clean your pallet first before tasting. So on a scale of pomegranate to banana, Slash being pomegranate and Allen Holdsworth being banana, Id like an everything smoothie with extra turbinado- hold the pomegranate add extra fresh squeezed orange juice please.

    • @Kondzio717
      @Kondzio717 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Datanditto You can still compare one quality which is speed of playing, same as sweetness of the fruit. And I simply compared this one particular factor - speed - in my original post. I never stated that Malmsteen is worse than Shaun, or vice versa. I think you are still the one missing a point and overinterpreting shit, which was pretty simple and self explanatory.

    4:30 on his fingers are laughing at Yngwie

    • @KeithWhalen11
      @KeithWhalen11  8 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Yngwie is a great player and Shawn embraced all kinds of music. That being said, Malmsteen never took these kinds of risks and there is a raw, unexplainable power to Lane that I've never found anywhere else.

    • @klbax63
      @klbax63 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yngwie is great I would have liked to seen him try some other things. Because as great as he is he's one dimensional compared to Shawn and I am just hearing Shawn for the first time tonight. I am a Steve Morse and Paul Gilbert fan and somebody mentioned Shawn in a comment so I wanted to check him out. He was way more outside the lines than Steve or Paul. I was watching him play Gray Pianos flying and I have never seen anybody approach the fret board like Shawn it was amazing!! He also seemed to be filling musical gaps in places he only knew were there. Shawn was obviously a virtuoso but his fire seemed to be very much like Hendrix a groundbreaking trailblazer almost like he knew his time on this plain was limited

    • @KeithWhalen11
      @KeithWhalen11  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +klbax63 I love Steve Morse, my father introduced me to his playing a long time ago, his tone is unique too. I agree with you about Malmsteen, he is so good in that neoclassical idiom but he only really strayed from that with a few bluesy tracks. Shawn really explored music, he was a fan of Liszt, Tatum, Nancarrow, Scriabin, etc. His music can't be pigeonholed, I think of how vastly different his HLS improvs are from his solo albums and how pieces like the Suite or One Note at a Time set his apart from the pack. He was a sound melodist on top of being proficient on two instruments.

    • @klbax63
      @klbax63 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The first track of Shawn's I listened to was "The Way It Has to Be" 30 seconds in I was struck with the Hendrix vibe with a splash of Eric Johnson tone on top what a mood piece. I'm also a big Stevie Ray Vaughn guy and that Hendrix vibe can't be faked Stevie had it and I got it right off from Shawn I don't know how I am just hearing about him I would have loved to see him live

    • @KeithWhalen11
      @KeithWhalen11  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +klbax63 That track is so good, actually that whole album is somewhat reserved for Shawn but then you'll get a run that makes your jaw hit the floor. You must be a fan of his Trademark cover? I've always loved Peace in Mississippi, he does the most insane pentatonic groupings in that one.

      I agree. In Shawn's case, it is particularly heartrending because he was a great person and possessed an irreplaceable talent. I have been listening to a lot of Alexei Sultanov recordings and his story is similarly affecting, having passed at the age of 35. We are fortunate to be able to remember them in their music but it can be a heavy thing to contemplate, as it begs other philosophical (perhaps unanswerable) questions.
