Outstanding as always. As a Ravens fan, I think Steve Spagnuolo and KC's entire D deserve a lot more credit for that win. They were beating our O at the point of attack all over the field. You can see why they weren't running the ball when you watch the tape. Great plan and execution. Macdonald killed it as well with the second half shutout. He had us in a position to win the game. Tough one to swallow. Feels a lot like losing on a missed kick to NE in 2011. I hope the follow up season looks similar.

There's so many ways in which, going into this coming season, last season feels a lot like that 2011 Ravens squad that was a Lee Evans drop and Cundiff shank away from making the Super Bowl, where we were so dominant in the regular season, made the AFC Championship, lost a heartbreaker to the AFC Champion, and then lost a lot of talent in the offseason including a very talented defensive coordinator leaving to become a head coach.
I'm like you, I'm hoping that those parallels mean we're going to get another similar follow-up.

People remember the Greg Roman era in Baltimore as an abject disater start to finish. In fact, in 2019, with Roman as OC, Baltimore scored the most points and TDs and the second most all-purpose yards in the entire league, they had the third highest Y/P. Roman's "sin" wasn't that he didn't have a highly efficient and successful scheme. His problem was that he seemed to be unable or completely unwilling to "evolve", to modify his scheme when the opponents adapted to it. Back in 2019 he was a hero. He probably thought he could remain to be without changing anything. Well, not in the NFL.

Wasn't there someone else, a coach who retired after '19 who, like Canales in Seattle wasn't officially the OC but who was calling the passing plays? Because those plays in '19 were _NOT_ Roman's. & while Steelers' fans chanted Matt Canada to the unemployment lines, what the excuse of BAL fans? You seemed to be incapable of calling Roman out when you needed to.
He reduced Lamar's MVP #s from 36 to only 16 TDs which is less than half while more than doubled his INTs from 6 to 13.
& you all just watched. Kurt Warner & a couple of lesser-known analysts made videos galore on how he undermined the *entire* offense not just the passing plays & You The Supposed Fans just let it all play out for 3 _years!_ Kenny Pickett the unproven 5th rounder got help in half that time.

    • @optimisticosfan4371
      @optimisticosfan4371 หลายเดือนก่อน

Much of Roman's scheme was also predicated upon how they would out-physical their opponents. It was no secret when and where they would run the ball when they were in a given formation. That would ultimately destroy the entire scheme when they no longer had the personnel to continue that mentality. Thank God for Todd Monken.

Great content. The Ravens can be a better team this year, imo mainly because of Derrick Henry. He is still the toughest guy to tackle in the league and hit almost 22 mph in his last game. Lamar hasn't had a Henry yet. I don't understand how a defense is going to contain Henry and single coverage across the board or let Lamar just waltz around the field whenever he wants. I just don't see enough defenders if one or two guys aren't bringing Henry down. There is no disrespect to Gus Edwards, but Henry isn't the same kind of animal. He's a Centaur.

The thing I will say, as a Ravens' fan who's watched the Roman OC era, is that Greg Roman is a fantastic run-game coordinator, a fantastic run play designer, not even as bad of a pass play designer as he's often blamed for, but he is not a good offensive coordinator. He's a smart man. I'm glad we had him for the time we did. He helped Lamar make the NFL transition, but I think by the time he left, Lamar and the offense as a whole had outgrown him.
He is deficient in too many of the gameday skills an offensive coordinator needs; I cannot overstate how many times we would end up in holes under Roman because either we'd take a pointless delay of game penalty, or the defense would be able to tee-off because of a short play clock and force a negative play because how he would call plays leaving the offense with barely enough time to actually get the snap off. In addition, he either did not bother to install, or he did install but was weirdly-reluctant to use any kind of hurry-up offense, and we'd often end losses where our offense would be driving and making positive plays but they'd just run out of time because there'd be too much time wasted calling plays at the end. As you noted, I think the problem is that he ultimately did not trust Lamar to make adjustments and calls at the line, and so Roman would make those adjustments himself or limit Lamar's latitude to make them himself, which just took unacceptably long. And his play calls were extremely predictable, and when they weren't, it was usually because they were bafflingly-inappropriate for the situation.
Monken is worlds better in those gameday elements over Roman, and it showed. I cannot express how much of a relief it was to see us get to the line on offense with more than fifteen seconds to get set and get the play off so often this year. Roman's a great guy for designing plays and putting together a playbook, but give me Monken any day of the week to actually coordinate an offense.

One thing I’ll say is that you put the Ravens rushing attack as an important factor for helping Lamar as a QB but skip over the fact that he’s led the team in rushing yards every year. Not to disrespect the RB room but he’s padded the team rushing numbers and efficiency significantly.

In my view the crucial differentiator in the championship game between the Ravens and the Chiefs was the "been there done that" factor. For the Chiefs it really felt "just like another game" - because they have already been in this situation many times. On the other side, the Ravens had only very few players/coaches who have ever been to a chamionship game. The further you progress in the playoffs, the more important this "been there done that" factor gets. I have long said Harbaugh should start stuffing his coaching staff with guys with playoff and Super Bowl experience, and also, as much of the position units as possible should have a guy with playoff and maybe even Super Bowl experience.
It seems that Lamar Jackson can only progress one step at a times in the playoffs (which is in no way a criticism towards him). In his first three full seasons as the Ravens QB (meaning he was the Week 1 starter and he didn't miss multiple games with injury) he:
    - went to the Wld Card round (2019)
    - went to the Divisional round (2020)
    - went to the Championship round (in 2023)
In 2021 he missed a huge part of the regular season and the Ravens missed the playoffs (although they were 8-3 wioth him at helm), then in 2022 he again missed several games, including the Wild Card.
This would indicate the next time the Ravens make the Super Bowl, and the next time after that they will win it :) (I wish things worked this way...)

As a PSL Owner, I can say that it was the calmest season I have ever experienced for when the offense was on the field. Now, we need to take the next step with the passing game and allow Monken to put more of his stamp on this offense. With Likely and Andrews now about to be featured on the field together, it creates more problems for defenses in that, if they stack the box with backers, those are mismatches in the passing game for Andrews and Likely. If they stay lighter in their packages, while Andrews and Likely are not great blockers, they are much better blockers against DBs. WR depth is the big concern. We have nobody behind Zay who has even proven that they can be a solid #3 WR. Let alone a solid #2 WR.

The entire 1st 20 minutes are lies so obvious I've lost confidence in both these guys. Andy Reid observed opposing defenses & adjusted his offense accordingly & won the last 2 S-Bs through His Play-Calling Only. Both game-winning TDs were on plays he schemed because he watched the game.
The Ravens on the other hand went into a game _against_ Reid & just kept calling RPOs then claimed that this liberated Lamar up, so everything is His Fault.
That's not liberating: it's _abandoning._ No way could Reid have seen what he saw _while_ dodging sacks, looking for open receivers etc.
The Ravens have acted as if they resent having an élite QB since they got one. It also seems like trying to make their élite QB irrelevant or not élite has been a Higher Priority for them than anything else. They traded away his only decent receiver & while Hollywood Brown is not a #1 WR he was great with Lamar, so they traded him away.
To keep up appearances they kept Andrews. But he's no deep threat & they didn't have one for the Next Three Years. OBJ was a show-signing. They literally only did it to try to entice Lamar away from holding out for a bigger contract. Now this year they let 60% of their starting o-line go, traded 2 younger oft-injured RBs for one older one & also lost one WR. While he certainly wasn't a very _effective_ WR, the nothing they replaced him with is bound to be _more_ effective?
They seem intent on paring down the weapons as much as possible as if to say "you're élite? Go prove it without receivers or coaches." They hung him out to dry in the playoffs _again!!_

What I actually said is that I'm not absolutely sure Lamar is going to throw for 3400+ yards. He's literally only done it once in 6 years; granted, that was last year and I can see this year being similar, but Brett's dismissive "Psh, OBVIOUSLY he's going to get 3400 yards!" is nonsense. Like I said, I'd _probably_ take the over, but it's not the sure bet Brett was saying.
Since he's been the full-time starter Lamar's yardage totals are 3127, 2757, 2882, 2242, and 3678. He had some injuries in '21 and '22 that limited him to 12 starts, but I don't look at that data and pretend 3400 yards is a mortal lock, free money, take it to the bank. It looks like _if_ he stays healthy, and _if_ defensive coordinators don't figure out a better way to defend him, and _if_ the receiving corps is healthy, and _if_ everyone is as good as they look now, _then_ it's very likely he'll get over 3400 passing yards, but even then it's not 100%.
What if Derrick Henry is absolutely destroying people on his way to 2k and Lamar just doesn't throw much? What if the Ravens are clobbering teams with defense and Lamar is like 10 of 13 for 140 and 2 TDs en route to a 24 point blowout every game? What if Zay Flowers gets hurt early in the season and the Ravens struggle to find yardage in the passing game?
