I love this concept! Keep on doing it! There are so many bands to cover in this format - LZ, Thin Lizzy, Gillan, Queen, Stones ... Dream Evil is my favorite Dio album for personal reasons. It was the time when I got into Dio. Top songs IMO Sunset Superman, Dream Evil, Faces in the Window ...
What a great concept for a panel show (always enjoy hearing from Read) more of these please :) Whitesnake Maiden Queen Sabbath AC/DC and many more and smaller catalogues too, endless potential. Enjoyed this episode thanks folks \m/
Great discussion. I have many similar favorite songs. Never really got into Strange Highways but love the opening song. Pete and Reed have motivated me to give it another play.
Absolutely agree on Strange Highways being a killer album, it belongs conceptually and musically together with Dehumanizer. I can totally relate to the pessimistic view of the world of the 90s articulated on the lyrics, having been raised in a suburb in Spain during recession and economic crisis at the time. My fav song is Pain, featuring one of the most crushing, doomy riffs ever written, love Ronnie's unapologetically gloomy lyric 'bury my bones on the moon, if they never should find me it would be too soon' as well. Pete J is totally right about Live In London Hammersmith Apollo 1993 being a truly awesome live document by that line-up.
I'm a year older than Reed. I too watched Mtv obsessively in it's infancy. I'm uncertain exactly when but, I may have become aware of it in late '82 or early '83. Perhaps Reed just missed the Holy Diver push on the channel. My friends and I watched those videos repeatedly! The Rainbow in the Dark video was a huge reason why we all loved Ronnie. It was the way he would act out the lyrics. I remember getting suited up in our metal best and miming along to the song in the mirror at my friend's house and trying to act out the words as Ronnie did. Good times! We did have a laugh at him play acting with that sword in the Holy Diver video though lol! Strange Highways isn't a pleasing album too my ears. I've given it many chances to make a connection and it is too angry for me. I dislike the heaviest songs and albums of Dio's catalog, from Dehumanizer through to the end of his career. I'm a fan of the epic, dungeons and dragons, style of contrasting view points on life and humanity. I have a palpable disdain for angry Ronnie spewing hate into the world. His best work has always been more hopeful and ambiguous. It gets ugly when Ronnie turns heel. I don't want Ronnie mired in the sludge and unhappy about his situation.
If you haven't already I urge you to get yours ears around Killing The Dragon!? Its album title alone should be fair warning of the return to form that came with that album, it was a deliberate step by DIO to get back to that old-school form. Which while not as strong was still evident with his final album Master Of The Moon, and for the same reason would also recommend a personal fave, Magica which was also a step in the right direction after the metal onslaught of Strange Highways and Angry Machines off the back of Sabbath's Dehumanizer (of which I love them all, but appreciate your point, they are def acquired tastes patriotpizzaman! ;)
Really appreciate you sharing your experience with DIO. A lot of folks are warming to Strange Highways and the angry DIO. Its not for everyone...thats for sure.

Reed, I love how Ronnie sings that line.

Merry Christmas Peter 😎🎄
Same to you Brandon, have a good one!
Dio was born in 1942, so by the 90s he was already getting up there.
So strange to think about, that he'd be 82 now if still here.

@@RockDaydreamNation I was inspired by you Reed, and Pete to revisit the DIo catalog once again. Accordingly, here are my best/worst from each album:
Holy Diver - Holy Diver / Shame on the Night
The Last in Line - The Last in Line / Eat Your Heart Out
Sacred Heart - Sacred Heart / Hungry for Heaven
Dream Evil - Night People / When a Woman Cries
Lock Up the Wolves - Evil on Queen Street / My Eyes
Strange Highways - One Foot in the Grave / Pain
Angry Machines - Big Sister / Stay Out of My Mind
Magica - Fever Dreams / Feed My Head
Killing the Dragon - Better in the Dark / Guilty
Master of the Moon - Living the Lie / Shivers
The fella in the blue shirt speaks but it’s difficult to stay aligned with what’s he’s saying. Too many words…too little substance.
Merry Christmas!
I found Pete’s input to be quite interesting…and his blue shirt is very cool.
