Andrew I would reverse the U, you're going to be bringing stuff from inside and now you have to walk all the way around. I think you still need a u-shape to hide the gas lines. I recommend using steel framing and either do stucco or cultured stone on the sides. You'll hate a tile countertop, stuff likes getting in the grout.

    • @truckguy6666
      @truckguy6666 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Yes, steel framing or concrete block if you want it to last! Wood will not last long and you will regret it. For the countertops I would search for Pre-Fab quartz countertops (its just man made granite).. around here you can get the pre-fab tops with a bullnose edge already done in like 9' lengths and cut to length yourself. You can get granite too but it will not hold up outside as well. Actually you're East Coast so you probably just need a polished edge with the 3cm thick material. Out here its all 2cm (or 3/4 inch) so you have to have an edge detail put on it. At any rate its doable, beautiful, long lasting, and very cost effective. I would definitely keep the cooktop(s) OFF of the wall of the house. That is asking for issues.

    • @Dwillems26
      @Dwillems26 2 ปีที่แล้ว

I agree with reversing the U. I also had the thought of putting the opening in the middle of that 10' long counter. So you still have seating pool side for guests, but you still aren't walking as far. Would also help keep the grill heat away from guests.
I also like the idea of extending the countertop to and maybe around the post. Not the cabinets, just the countertop.

Won't work, I'd have to shorten the entire kitchen by half because the other end would be in our windows. Not to mention pulling up in the yard and looking into a kitchen area isn't the best looking.

I didn't think about the windows, a drop down would look like an after thought as well. I do like the idea of incorporating the column, if you have to go short one way might as well go a little longer out. Then you and Tiffany aren't tripping over each other behind the bar. I look forward to seeing what you come up with.

Consider extending counter top out to include that 6x6 post. It really doesn’t add much for cost and will look less awkward. You can then pull the post into design and hang some side planters or maybe signs like bar open, etc.

I would make the U shape open to the side that is the same side of the main entrance door. For ease of grabbing stuff in and out instead of having to walk all the way around. Install the drink fridge at the post facing the same direction on the main entrance door as its not needed for cooking at and more for the family and friends that come over. Wouldnt want them in the kitchen as your cooking when they just want a drink. Basically make it face out. Having the closed off side of the U shape at the corner of the window would cut off the view from the guest area in order to keep a cleaner look and appearance while cooking too. Basically at 15:38 where your facing the wall/window I would make that span countertop. All this would still allow you to run gas line and electric around to appliances.

This is your space so do what you want. From my little experience with outdoor kitchens with tile as the counter top, I didn't like having all the seams between the tiles. As I seen someone else mention I'd try for solid surface scraps if you can find some that would work or just "buy once cry once" and get stainless tops. Dealing with food and drinks on a surface with many seams just makes you have to spend way more time keeping it clean and you'll end up wishing you would have went ahead and spent the extra upfront for a solid surface top. Again this is your space, do what you like. That's just my thoughts. I can't wait to see it complete.

  • @ShaneZettelmier
    @ShaneZettelmier 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

For an outdoor kitchen I say the number one most important thing is make it really easy to clean, even something you can pressure wash or at least spray with a bunch of degreaser and hose off.
Make your faucet one of the tall ones you can stick a pot under it. An exhaust fan above it to move air away or a fan blowing so you don’t get smoke and stuff hanging up there but you don’t want a ton of air moving that’s gonna hit a grill or something that needs to maintain temperature.
Any kind of cabinets you get should be really well sealed to keep bugs and mice out. I don’t know what to do about the Bears 😂
I would also wire a couple of outlets under the edge of the bar so people can charge phones and stuff like that or you can plug your camera in or an extra fan or light or something out there just so you don’t have to have everything by the wall. GFCI of course since you’re outside. A dinner bell. A security camera on it.
If you going to incorporate the cooking stuff and you’re gonna do wood would I would consider would be to run a decorative stone or tile edge and wrap that around the Blackstone so you don’t have any heat issues, it’ll also be easier to clean if grease splatters a little bit while you’re cooking.
One thing I would do is find a place that does the granite countertops and talk to them about scraps. They get a lot of end cuts that are just under size or have an uneven edge, sometimes you can get some pretty decent size slabs for cheap. I would do tile if I couldn’t find any good granite pieces. Tile works great and it’s easy to clean and it’s weather resistant and it’s easy to update if you wanna change the look later.
It might be cool to have a deep fryer out there. I like the idea of deep frying but I don’t eat that much deep-fried food but it would be really cool, especially if you were doing a catch cook and clean thing.
I think it’s gonna be pretty cool and this fall when things start to cool off it’s gonna be really nice to get out there.

I was thinking about remnants, too. There's no law that says you have to be matchy matchy, it just needs to look intentional. Maybe a remnant of stone on the bar level and a restaurant style counter on the work surface area on the cooking side. Reclaimed wood or something cool under resin on the sink/refrigerator side.

I am sure there would be companies in USA that build these type of pools. Anyway, just an idea for an above ground pool if that is an option your looking at. Keep up the good work - you and Tiffany have done so much. If I can also pass on some advice, you should use Tiffany's name more often replacing 'she' and 'her' which you sometime over use.

Had another thought. If you put the mini fridge directly under the window. Then when you use the window as a pass through, you can set your trays of food directly onto the top of the fridge. Then when you go outside you can just move the food down into the fridge. Now with the fridge under the window. The spot you were thinking about putting the fridge in the U of the outdoor kitchen could be a door. Think bottom of a dutch door, the style with a shelf at the top of it. Could be made to look seamless or invisible. It could keeps you from walking around and a clean look from the parking area. Oh wait the gas line.... Trench and tile floor? Just ideas....

  • @ryanfaerman

You might want to also consider that you're gonna be bringing food/ingredients from inside the house. Maybe have the entire thing be a set of parallel lines, rather than a more closed shape. This way you can go straight from the front door around the corner into the prep area.
Having it open also lets you get access from both sides depending on what you've got planned for the future.
That does make it a bit challenging to get the gas line over to the far side, but I'm sure you can think of something for that.

I was at a tile shop a couple weeks ago and they had some amazing looking 2 foot by 4 foot porcelain tiles. My first thought when I saw them was that they would be awesome for a countertop. You get the ease of working with tile but you don't have many of the grout joints that typically make tile countertops a pain, and porcelain wouldn't have a problem with stains or cleanup. You're probably not going to find anything like that at Lowes but an actual tile place should have them.

I can see framing the structure with steel studs and then using hardi product as a cover and putting a good coat of paint, if thats your thing. But I would not use anything thats wood, particle board, osb, pressboard, etc. Its just not worth it. PLUS, you need to have non-combustibles built around the fire-breathing appliances. Far as the grill insert, you could measure it out but keep it removable for when it is able to be filled when money allows. Meanwhile the space is useable as a base cabinet or shelving.
If you know anyone who is in HVAC, maybe horse trade a fire ring for a overhead exhaust with a rewired blower fan from a system, pending time money and so forth.

My vote is to first talk to the (and/or any and all similar) folks you got your super duper commercial sink from. for a prep table or two you could maybe cut up or something.
Unfortunately a lot of restaurants went out of business during lockdown and as you know you can't beat used stainless steel commercial grade quality gear for value. You often say what a great deal you got on your sink so try that same route again.
Used commercial is far better than new consumer imho
also check with the guys you got your kitchen granite counter tops from for scrap pieces you may piece together in a Mosaic pattern or something as seams don't matter outside
or you could use marine-grade finishes like fiberglass gel coat or something for a countertop or even Teakwood meant for boat decks as a countertop you don't need much
    think outside the box
    that stuff would last forever.
    Food for thought,
    Good luck!

just gotta say that while it may look a little better to under mounting that mini-fridge, it is going to render the bottom 2-3 shelves virtually inaccessible without crawling around on the ground. if it were me I would build something like a bar back kinda thing that would frame in the TV maybe a few shelves to hold your bottles of liquor and then put that mini-fridge on top of the counter. would give you a ton more under counter storage and would be much more convenient to reach beverages on all the shelves. The bar-back style would look decent too if done nicely and dont think would be too expensive.

I know you didn't mentioned the rain in the video, and I know your worried about how far that goes in. My thoughts are to keep the cabinets where you are planning them, but to extend the countertop out to almost the post, that way the barstools have somewhere to sit. I'm also thinking that you have the wrong end of the cabinets open. I would have the end closest to the back door open.
Safety!!!!! I haven't heard you mention much about safety!!! With the propane lines, I'd would put in a kill switch/button to quickly turn off the propane lines and might want to think of where the extra large fire extinguisher is going to be placed while you're thinking of the set up!!!!

Can't wait to see it all come together! Personally I would bring it on out to that pole though. Having that small gap is only going to get annoying and interrupt the flow. Plus a little more wiggle room in the kitchen area is always better!! With multiple people around for get togethers you don't need folks bumping the cook! Just a thought!

Your getting alot of input (as expected). My "2 cents" is the countertops and the man-made Quartz style will give you the "bang for your buck" long term. Ease of maintenance, functionality, colors/styles and reasonable cost. My last remodel for our kitchen (inside) turned out great, using it. Also having a concern with putting the mini-frig down low. Consider elevating to make ease of access better. Bending over to get stuff out is OK for now but again "long-term" having it higher makes it easier to see in and access later. Keep up the video's.. Loving them.

This might have been brought up, but have you considered using Corian solid surface countertops? They're fairly inexpensive, moisture resistant, used as shower walls often, low maintenance. Their downside is they are softer than quartz and can scratch/burn easily from hot pots and pans.

I think you need a fold-up counter walk-through, or you're going to Hate walking around the seating area to get back to the kitchen.
Not sure you even want closed cupboards outside in the humidity. A tote in the pantry with outside dishes & such keeps out mold & critters. You'll pr'bly have food & dishes on folding tables during party. Open shelves hold totes on cooking side during party, it all goes back to pantry afterwards. Hose it all down afterwards, no place for critters to make homes in warm, dark places.

Stainless is the way to go. That allows you to use food service-grade sanitizer, very cheap at Sam's Club, and literally clean it to NSF standards exactly like a restaurant. But stainless is expensive. I don't even want to look. Tile sounds like a good approach if you can get the grout sealed. Junk and germs will get into any crevice and this is going to be outdoors with dust and blown rain, probably curious animals walking on it. It needs to be something you can quickly and easily sanitize whenever you need to. All of this you already know. Thanks so much for sharing your thought processes as you go. Many people just do it and show it but never explain why or why not. This is one huge reason your videos are so awesome. No matter what it is you are doing, you always share the why.

I would say keep cooking away from the house. One, food and grease stains could ruin the siding. Two, if you are trying to entertain, your back could be towards everyone for a bit.
Tiles could be good but go with a large tile to cut down on grout joints.
Mini fridge should be closer to the end, towards the window. Again if you are entertaining you could have people constantly walking behind you while cooking opening yourself up for accidents.

How about decorative perforated metal for the front of the outdoor kitchen. Could be painted any color (black to match trusses), would look neat and allow for ventilation. My other thought would be durock which could also be painted. The blackstone is on wheels correct? If you removed the side table wings, couldn't you just build a slot in the counter to roll it into and out of if needed. Just like the range inside the house. Lots of ideas in the comments. Can't wait for the build.

I would put the fridge next to the window so that you're not playing bartender and cook at the same time. if it's accessible it can be more self-serv. not that there's anything wrong in playing bartender but someone will want a drink at the most inopportune time while you're cooking. Bigger sink also sounds like a good idea. In the not budget friendly category, a stove hood over the cooktop and grill. Looking forward to the build videos.

Ok when I was growing up we had Butcher block counter by the sink so that we could clean and cut, I would suggest that you put the TV on a swivel more in the corner not above the sink area or the cooking area just because the cooking area the steam and the heat like you talked about, and for the sink water splashing up but the biggest thing is if someone’s watching a game and your heads are in the way that could be a really big distraction so I would suggest a swivel for the TV. And if you put a bar area above the Blackstone while you’re cooking that heat and steam is going to go up into their faces as they’re sitting there. What ever you choose is going to be wonderful:) tfs stay safe and God Bless:)

Definitely cook away from the house. Oil, smoke and heat will do a number on the house over time. A large drawer or 2 under the blackstone for all her griddle accessories. If you run into an area you need to fill 6-8 inches, a sheet pan cabinet works well.

Use the same siding and paint scheme on the bar that you use on the house. It will make it look very integrated. Second, I do recommend the concrete pour in place countertops which can be done as a one man show. I hear you on the fear of food and other stains, but consider a very dark concrete dye to hide any future stains. Take a look at Modustrial Maker on youtube. As for the gas you may want to consider a timed shutoff valve, some insurance companies require them for outdoor kitchens.

From the way I understand it, the outdoor kitchen is u shaped with the end blocking exit to the door around the corner. I would make the end a flip up counter top so one of you can exit to get to the inside kitchen without bumping into the person cooking.

If you close in that end of the outdoor kitchen and need something from inside, you have doubled the distance that you will have to walk and that might be a problem if you need something in a hurry.
For safety sake, you might want to go with a deeper bar top. You don't want someone to be able to reach across the bar/counter top and be able to reach the cook top

    • @TKCL

The little bit of walking does not bother me. Won't work, I'd have to shorten the entire kitchen by half because the other end would be in our windows. Not to mention pulling up in the yard and looking into a kitchen area isn't the best looking.
