Ladies and Gentlemen… ROBBIE HAS ENTERED THE CHAT. 😘😘😘 and those leaves are massive. Probably some of the biggest I’ve seen on a hellebore. I just wish I knew the name!
I loooove hellebores, they are one of my top favourite flower! Their leaves are awesome, their flowers are magical and the fact that they bloom when the whole garden is sleeping is just like magic! They are the jewels of winter! Some people are complaining about their scent! The truth is that they smell a bit bad but I don’t mind! Some people tend to be more sensitive to their smell… I don’t know. Their name and story are very fascinating too! As you said hellebores are very poisonous plants! Their botanical name is Helleborus and it derives from Hellenic🇬🇷 Ελλέβορος = ellévoros It became hellebore in English though Latin. The term ellévoros means: ellera + vròsin terrible + food Not because it a terrible food to taste but if you eat it the consequences will be terrible!!! We have some native verities of hellebores here 🇬🇷 and in fact I read somewhere in History books that in ancient times two big Hellenic City-States were in war. The people of the one city gathered some hellebores and threw them in the water tank of the other city. After a couple of day all the men we filling ill and they had poisoning symptoms, throwing up and “going to the toilet” all day. With the army of the city being nullified, the other city’s army went in and wiped them out!!! People had seen the poisoning properties of hellebores from the ancient times and that’s why it gave it that name!
I used hellebores in tablescapes for my husband’s memorial service last January. They were gorgeous and meaningful as something showing life in the depths of winter.
This is beautiful and also heartbreaking. I’m so sorry for the loss of your loving partner in this life. I hope these blooms will bring a smile instead of a tear. Grief can be such a rollercoaster and I’m sending you my love.
Kate, I was also a “ding a ling” planting my beautiful Hellebores where I could not see them. Of course I bought some more last year. Then when I had to keep them indoors, waiting for the weather to warm up the aphids infested them. I almost threw them the plants out because they were so infested, but I cut off all the leaves and then in the fall I started noticing new leaves growing! Thanks, I did not realize one should be cutting off all the previous season leaves because I thought they were needed to draw in the energy for the new flowers.🥰🌸🇨🇦
Oh no, those aphids are the worst! But you’re a pro for rescuing them, they are so worth it! And I just add it to my January chore list each year to give them a snip. It’s been hard to convince myself to get out and garden in this cold weather!
I'm obsessed with hellebores. I only have a few right now with plans to both divide and purchase more over time. Eventually I will have drifts in my front and side yards. Bonus is they are also deer resistant. I might wait to trim off the leaves until after this frosty weather unless it stays around much longer. Hope your guys feel better soon.
Oh my gosh. It’s been pretty frigid! And thank you… their fevers broke (thank goodness!) but now it’s just a slow road back to normal with the worst cough! Tons of kids at their school are down with the same bug.
I have been itching to get out in my bed of hellebore but we are experiencing very cold weather and nightly freezing temps. So I am leaving them tucked in with leaf mulch for another week or so. I have budding and a few flowers at the edge of the bed where they get more sun. Love these plants!
Oh I’ve been watching this weather roll through and it’s so cold across the country! I tucked my hellebores back in after filming just to be overly cautious, but they’re hardy little buggers.
I'm a hellebore fanatic. Been growing them 26 years. Constantly dividing. This year I've had TONS of babies. Been giving them away to all my neighbors. I usually get lady bugs to eat the aphids.
I soooo agree Kate!! Glad you’re featuring Hellebore. I live in South Seattle. We have heavy deer and rabbit pressure. No problem! Such easy maintainance! What not to LOVE!!
Totally did the same before I knew to prune it! They’ll eventually die off and probably look ratty by mid-summer and sometimes hide pests so I now remove them and they’re so much happier!
Definitely polar conditions here now. My hellebores was just starting to bloom, but are now covered in snow. I am not complaining, I was born in the arctic and still love the cold. So now I am enjoying my teas that just arrived yesterday. And my coneflower thermo mug. Life is good!
Yay!!! Siv, you are one of those supporters that Brian and I refer to by name around the house. We love that our tea and mug are helping keep you warm! XO
Love learning about these. They are so beautiful. Kate can you do a segment on potting benches. I’m desperately trying to find a good quality one. No rush but would love to talk about that:)?~ Di
Hi Kate! I had no idea we were to remove the runners (the leaves) from last season. I garden in Georgia, zone 8A. If you don’t, does this harm the plant? Always learning from you ❤
I have a painting my grandmother did of her garden in Columbus, Georgia covered in several inches of snow. I think it was sometime in the 1970s. I wonder if that was the last snow y’all had. Enjoy!
I love hellebores! I have them planted in a container/raised bed at my front door. Mine also got an infestation of aphids that were really bad. I went out and washed all the leaves with just soap & water once a week and still had aphids. I did prune all the old foliage a few weeks ago. Next season I’ll use insecticide soap instead of regular soap to try & keep the aphids at bay. They did kill my brunnera (Jack Frost)that was in the same bed. 😢
I despise aphids. I’ve tried a few insecticidal soaps and am using a safer one currently. It’s the one I keep in my van for when I’m visiting clients and spot some uninvited guests.
Oh me too! I’ve heard of some that are rated down to zone 3 but most go down to zone 4. I read that if you have a solid snow cover they can insulate them a bit, but don’t have first hand knowledge of it.
Pretty pretty. Do you think helebore would thrive/survive/ struggle to live under spruce trees? Morning sun, hillside, fab drainage. Also, the epimediums grow ell there as does my sweet woodruff.
Oh yeah. For sure! They’re a fabulous selection for a woodland garden and suited to similar conditions as epimediums. I’d say to be more attentive to watering that first year and then you should be in good shape!
They are a favorite but I continue to buy,I think they are pricey too I pay 20-25 each as you can tell I don’t have a Trader Joe’s 🤣 Stay warm,it’s 5 degrees here in East Tennessee 🌿🌱
Great question! Fertilize them after they finish blooming (late spring). You could also fertilize them in the early fall, but I prefer spring. Also, they aren’t hungry feeders so I don’t always fertilize mine.
That hellebores is huge! I need more

I've always wanted some hellebores. Now that I'm in Michigan I can finally get some. Thank you for the information too.
My hellebores have been under the snow now for a couple of weeks now. Great tips as always!
You always give the best and most easy to understand advice. Thank you!
Thank you so much! I really try to make it as simple as possible so everyone can be successful. 💕
The deer resistance of these is compelling. Thanks Kate.
Oh! And the bunnies don’t mess with them either. It’s such a good one if you struggle with either pressure.
@@HelloGarden I don't have any, but you've convinced me I NEED them. This is so happening. I know just the spot.

Hope your kiddos feel better! Thanks for sharing!
They’re doing much better, thank you for thinking of them! Fevers are gone and now we just have the lingering low energy and brutal cough.
Love, love hellebores! Thank you!
You are so welcome! They are such a rewarding plant to grow. 🌱

The one plant I plan to splurge on this year! I have one but want plenty. Simply Beautiful!
They are so dang gorgeous! You can compare bloom times to stagger them and have months of blooms!

Oh, Di. I actually have a proper potting bench on my wish list for this year! If I find something amazing, I’ll film it for sure!
I also planted my first hellebore where I can't see it. Thanks for info on how to transplant in the fall.
Ha ha ha! I’m so glad I’m not alone. And lucky for us they’re great candidates for the fall shuffle!
