Hi All!, a little update on this grill. The product is live on kickstarter on the 5th June (2021) and as per the feedback here, the mesh of the grill is now a thicker gauge.
Hi Andy! Love your reviews (they are not patronizing). As long as the mesh is strong...and can be reasonably-easily cleaned, I'm in! Love it that the handle stays cool. Stay safe and free!😉🇨🇦
Just had a look at the kickstarter link. What will make or break this is the price so the guy has to get that right, there's no way he would sell it for $90 (regular price) - only my opinion.
hey, Paul thanks for your comment It takes a lot of money to start these things off I would like to reduce the rrp in the future. what do you think the rrp should be?
I knew..... lol....ketchup 😂 that grill is awesome! My only worry is the very thin wire and how long those will last under high heat for a long period of time. 🤔 I guess only more uses will show how well it lasts. And your right....a black bag would be better 👍🏼 great review Andy! My only complaint is that it needed more bacon 😂😂
I like it. An additional arm for pot-hanging would be nice. Also, a folding grill would be a selling point for me, to make it easier to fit in a day pack. I like that the wire rack sits under the frame so that sausages are less likely to roll off. Having an potion of a second leg for enough stability for a Dutch oven would be something I would consider too. I have the TJM metalworks fire anchor (like Simon’s) and I am super happy with it, it will most likely live longer than me. But if this folded down smaller and had a pot hanger (or I’d make one for it) it would be on my wish list for it’s light weight advantage. Like it.
Nice review Andy. Look forward to seeing how the grill holds up. I'm interested in one, was looking on Amazon just the other day but didn't see one that interested me as much as this one. Thanks!!!!
thanks for the review Andy . looks a handy bit of kit but at £45 its way over price . It may have been developed in NZ but I did notice on the box that its made in China . Really hope this works for him but i think its going to sit on the shelf unless he gets the pricing right
Nice idea... I'd like two platforms though...even if it's just two grills...so you can cook on a pan as well as just open cooking... bacon on one grill...fried eggs on another.
Maybe if there was a point on the end that goes in to the ground and the wider part of the triangle part had a flat top say 20mm wide, you could push it in to the ground with your foot in tougher ground.also the pole part could be in two parts like tent poles.
Great review. I’ve always liked Simon’s cast iron one but I like the light weight of this one. Needs 2 cooking ‘arms’ in my opinion and thicker mesh like most others mentioned. Thank you!

Thanks for your comment I have just had a look at Simons one it looks good mine will be lighter and it won't rust because it is made of stainless steel. different grills will suit different people. with the thicker mesh, people are asking for I think it will easily be a durable as Simons one.
Does look good Andy. I was a bit concerned when I saw you put the kettle on it, thought there could be a bend at the weld where the mesh goes over the pole. Must be a lot of forces acting on that join. So it would be interesting to know how it’s held up on the prototypes. I do like it though. Thanks for sharing. Oh, a black bag would be good I think.
I did some testing today Ill be putting the videos up soon I hung a 10-liter water container under the grill and filled it up to see when it would break. then I tested the mesh putting it in a fire with a brick on it for 3 hours and tried to get it red hot. The mesh did not break it only deformed. I will be increasing the mesh to 1mm which does not seem like much but if you double the thickness you 4x the strength so increase the thickness by 25% is twice the strength. The reason I am increasing to 1mm is I have just discovered from having a closer look with everyone's comments the .8 mesh can work harden and break where it is spot welded on to the round bar. Looks a fantastic product to me, especially if as others have said the mesh is a little more heavy duty, a more neutral bag colour, padding in the bag to be used as a sitting/kneeling mat and a smaller grill plate included so as food could be swivelled round to keep warm as the finishing touches go on the big old steak I’d have on there..!!! Hey. Not bothered about the colour of the bag, something that is robust, heat resistant and easy to clean after a trip would be grand.. As for the ground spike.. would be good to have an adjustable one - height wise... for those using portable mesh fire pits... I like it a lot... be great for Wild camping on motorcycles .... Looking forward to testing it out.... don't be too long though... somebody or some other company may beat you to it.... Good fortune ....
I would definitely have a grill if you can change the bag to a olive green or camouflage bag as it looks really good with a different color bag it would be a 10/10
@@zalderan6043 Thanks for your reply, it wasn't clear about the separate pocket for the spike, and in my view the spike could possibly be about another 6 inches longer to allow for simmering of food and water over the larger fire
Personally don't think the mesh will hold up as already said and to pricey. How would it stand up to being over a flame all day. Really can't see the bit the handle attaches to lasting over time although I do appreciate it is a lightweight piece of kit. Just my pennies worth.
I did some testing today Ill be putting the videos up soon I hung a 10-liter water container under the grill and filled it up to see when it would break. then I tested the mesh putting it in a fire with a brick on it for 3 hours and tried to get it red hot. Looks like a good product, I can see the general comments are about the grill mesh looking too thin, testing with extreme heat and a couple of bricks as mentioned below will evidence the strength. Only thing I would say is to be able to extend the height so have a second pole that slots over the initial one. Also just have a pole with a hook in so you can hang a pot over the fire rather than use the grill all the time. its a lightweight addition but makes the kit complete for cooking and boiling at the same time ???? and Yes more woodland colour for the bag ;-)
Hi Andy Thanks for your comments we will be increasing the thickness of the mesh and we are doing testing at the moment (subscribe link in the description) and we will email you the videos of the tests. I'll work on a pot hanger and we will make more colors available for the bag. Nathan
Texas here. Depending on price and how the mesh holds up, I’d like something like this. I like Simons, but when grams count, this would be the way to go.
Hi Glenn Thanks for your comment working hard to make it both lightweight and durable we will be doing some destructive testing soon subscribe to stay up to date.
Not a bad looking piece of gear, Andy. The only thing that caused me to pause was the gauge of wire used on the grate. I think I would go bigger and space them further apart, from what I can tell on screen. I had a small campfire grate with a fine grate and it warped and sank so quick, I tossed it and got a better one I still use. Does it seem heavy duty enough (the main rod and attachment to it in general) to hold up a cast iron skillet or to hang a small Dutch oven from? I have ideas... 🤔 Thanks for the look, buddy. Good to see you get out.
Hi, thanks for your comment. I have cooked a 2.2kg leg of lamb no problem, a small skillet may be ok. but probably not a dutch oven. l like the mesh size because it is light and easy to clean it does warp in the heat though. what size is the mesh on the grill you like?
I have been seeing it pop up in my Instagram feed and I checked it out a few weeks ago. Pretty interesting and I definitely like it and would use it a lot. The mesh on the grill looks like it needs to be a bit thicker or stronger. I also don't think its going to sell very well for $90 though, maybe half that especially made in China.
Good idea. But looks a bit lightweight for a open fire. The mesh area looks too thin for durability. Rod looks like a driveway reflector marker pole. Good idea. But I think needs tweaking a little bit. Mesh really.
Zalderan Nathan Id say that somewhere along the lines of the thickness you would find a good quality BBQ would use for a grill. Something that will not warp or burn out quickly. What you have used right now as a prototype is a bit thin and think in time it will burn out in a not so long a period of time if used often.
@@petersmith6974 Hi Peter thanks for your comments and letting me know your concerns other people obviously have similar concerns. I am going to do some destruction testing soon I am planning 2 tests one where put weight on the grill and increase it until it breaks. and another where I will heat the grill mesh up to red hot and put bricks on it and see what happens. I will also increase the thickness of the wire mesh so it looks better I have a sample with thicker mesh I will test that too. subscribe in the link above if you want to see the video and stay up to date with progress thanks for your help. If you think there is another test you would like to see let me know.
Hi Andy great review as always looks like a good bit of kit but too expensive the wire is thin I like the fact its lightweight but that price is ridiculous add a few more options for a pot hanger ect and it might be worth it sorry mate just my opinion atvb Jimmy 😎😎
Thanks for your comment I have had no problems with the mesh but could make it thicker if everyone wanted that. I chose the mesh size because it light and easy to clean and I expect it to hold up fine. it does warp with the heat, however.
@@LundysWildcampBushcraft We will be doing a survey to help improve the grill and everyone who does the survey will have a chance to win a grill. so if you want to help us develop the product feel free to sign up. Thanks for your comments.
G'day Andy. I guess as a kiwi, I should be supporting a Nz made product but can't. Down here we call that main support rod conduit pipe. Very light, but over a period of time near extreme heat it can lose its ability to support even your pet spider. You were lucky pushing that into soft ground. ..try hitting a rock or tree root as you push it down, and you find it folding in half. I think the best I've ever seen was the cast steel setup that Simon a bloke in the woods reviewed a week or 3 back. Yep a bit heavier, but a long way more durable. Love your channel. Take care.
I think you’re talking about the TJMProducts mini fire anchor ,I’ve got one and it’s nuclear bomb proof and not that heavy at all ,you’d hardly notice the weight ,and it would never warp or bend
@@pathfinder3405 yeah. Thanks for the reminder mate. I went online after Simon's review. But not sure what it costs in Nz $$$. Maybe should have read further. Wonder if Father Christmas will give me one. Again thankyou. Take care.
hi, Paul thanks for your comment I chose. .8mm to make the grill lighter and easy to clean I have cooked lots on it and the stainless steel mesh has not failed in any way. what thickness would you like the mesh?
@@zalderan6043 Nice idea for the ground anchor and the adjustment. Comments seem to be concerned about mesh sizing. Have you tried say 1.6mm stright bar with only one crossing piece in the centre should be around the same weight but will look more robust. Might even be cheaper to build as your not paying for manufacturing of the mesh?
@@JEll123 Thanks for your comments mesh is actually cheaper as it is manufactured by machine rather than by hand. I did some testing today Ill be putting the videos up soon I hung a 10-liter water container under the grill and filled it up to see when it would break. then I tested the mesh putting it in a fire with a brick on it for 3 hours and tried to get it red hot. You put red sauce on a bacon Sammie. It's got to be hp. Good video though I might look into this product. I need to find a cheap kettle now 🤣🤣👍 Edit : I just looked at the price I take back what I said
Nice piece of kit. Although I'd say you may have had the grill upsidedown. If it was slightly heavier gauge and had a wee bit silicone round the handle I'd be sold. 👍
Hey my Scotland. Thanks for your comment I made the grill that way so there is an edge to stop the food rolling off ie the grill is up the right way. I made the handle so you can take it off while cooking and it won't get hot. what purpose is the silicone grip or protection from heat?
@@zalderan6043 Ah nice I like the lip idea. Silicone on the handle would be good for heat, grip and ergonomics. Looks like a great wee grill bud. Best of luck with it. 👍🍻
Does Simon have something similar.....I really like Simon’s and this seems to have improved on that one in some ways..... Maybe have two sizes of grills or just an extra bar that you can hang a billy or pot from rather than having to place everything on the grill.
Zalderan Nathan Hi, Perhaps go up a couple of gauges? Or say pots are for hanging. I think even without pots on - its going to give under the weight of steaks. From Andy’s review i was just put off by how quickly it deformed.
@@robhenshaw6845 Hi Rob yes we will look a doing thicker wire I have cooked a 2.2kg leg of lamb on it no problem click on the Zalderan logo to see the video. however, the wire does warp with the heat. and sags a little. Is this the problem or are you worried it will break? Thanks for your comment.
Hi Andy, Like it and I've just checked out the 'normal' price -$90 if its in New Zealand Dollars so that's around £45 UK. Kick-starter price $45NZ £22.50. No mention of where the postage costs are to be centred on or how much? Overall, a nice bit of kit.
Agree with the comments hitherto. Mesh looks weak as, clearly sagged after the first use. I love the anchor, perfect for beach cooking, handle, look, I would prefer something that does not hold heat, wood on a magnetic coupling maybe?, bag colour is shocking lol and I don't like the material, would prefer a cotton sack that I can wash if needs be. If he get's it right I would love to see our Kiwi brothers down here get a new product to market. Lets see a stage two design and go from there.
Great idea and looks to work ok. Like most people have said the mesh doesn't look that robust and can't be easily replaced. Maybe it would be better if the mesh sat on top of the frame and had rolled edges so it slid over it. Mesh would be replaceable then and you could even have different mesh size options. At that price it will be very easy for it to be copied overseas and flogged on ebay imo. Hopefully he does ok from this as we need more locally produced products so that people can support them.
@@zalderan6043 I think that most comments referred to the thickness, gauge ?, of the mesh so maybe slightly heavier? Is it spot welded to the frame, it is a bit hard to make out from the video. It does look like you have loaded it up from your videos so it may be just a bit of an illusion that it may fail. I will check out your videos soon as it is good to see another bushcraft type channel from our part of the world. Good luck with it mate.
@@oldbloke204 yes there is a lot of comments thickness, gauge ?, of the mesh Ill do a survey with the pros and cons weight ect probably go with slightly thicker mesh . Yes, the mesh is spot welded we are planning to do more bushcraft videos. Thanks for your comment.

@@zalderan6043 If the material was more heavy duty you'd get more custom I think. It looks somewhat flimsy right now. The design itself looks promising. Good luck!
I'd buy that, Will there be a discount for UK buyers? Just because we get charged massive import charges and Its coming from the US. It looks good anyway, maybe a larger one also?
This is cool and loved the review, but I picked up the 2 pack combo from Expedition Research off Amazon for $25. Granted, no stand pole, but I can find one around the garage to take with me for that. And those grills have been through lots of campfires without warping or looking like they're about to give way. Like the design of the stand, but for this price, no thank you.
hi, John thanks for your comment you can take the handle off and put it in your pocket and only put it on when you want to move the grill this way it won't get hot.
Looks good but the grill looks a little thin, and maybe coat the handle with maybe paint or something to make it more grippy, other than that I would buy it 🤙

@@zalderan6043 Thanks for your reply, it wasn't clear about the separate pocket for the spike, and in my view the spike could possibly be about another 6 inches longer to allow for simmering of food and water over the larger fire
@@zalderan6043 another idea could be to add a separate pot holder bar with hook at end
Thanks again for your comment Subscribe and I will email you the video.
Did it say how much weight it will hold, looks like not to much?
Nathan
Always ketchup on a bacon butty 😀 looks a good set up be nice to see something else cooking too
Texas here. Depending on price and how the mesh holds up, I’d like something like this. I like Simons, but when grams count, this would be the way to go.
Ounces in Texan. 😉
Hi Glenn Thanks for your comment working hard to make it both lightweight and durable we will be doing some destructive testing soon subscribe to stay up to date.
Looks.really good. Would be great for Scouts backwoods cooking. Will.be dependent on price
Thanks, Matthew I'm sure it would be great for Scouts and backwoods cooking.
I really like this camping grill! It's easy to maneuver and adjust, and is quite a good size. Hopefully the price is affordable.
Hi Marjie thanks for your comment.
Extra bacon. 5 rashers in total. In my opinion. The grill is good. Guessing the price isn't? I'll check it out.
Good idea. But looks a bit lightweight for a open fire. The mesh area looks too thin for durability. Rod looks like a driveway reflector marker pole. Good idea. But I think needs tweaking a little bit. Mesh really.
Hi Peter thanks for your comment. what thickness would you like the mesh?

Take care.
Looks a good product Andy, the mesh looks really thin so would be interesting to see how long it lasts.
hi, Paul thanks for your comment I chose. .8mm to make the grill lighter and easy to clean I have cooked lots on it and the stainless steel mesh has not failed in any way. what thickness would you like the mesh?
@@zalderan6043 Nice idea for the ground anchor and the adjustment. Comments seem to be concerned about mesh sizing. Have you tried say 1.6mm stright bar with only one crossing piece in the centre should be around the same weight but will look more robust. Might even be cheaper to build as your not paying for manufacturing of the mesh?
@@JEll123 Thanks for your comments mesh is actually cheaper as it is manufactured by machine rather than by hand. You put red sauce on a bacon Sammie. It's got to be hp. Good video though I might look into this product. I need to find a cheap kettle now 🤣🤣👍
Edit : I just looked at the price I take back what I said
Looks good but quite pricey. A hinge or spiggot arrangement to halve the grill length for back packing would be useful.
Hi FreetoWheel thanks for your comment.
That looks really good. However the mesh worries me a little.
We plan to increase the size of the mesh we will be doing some testing soon. subscribe and we will email you the videos.
it looks good but a spiked end would be good
Looks good might be better with some sort of hinge in the middle to cut down on size 👍
Hi KD thanks for your comment.
Mesh is thin - not sure about deformity from small kettle. Spade is like those on dog lead ground stakes. Like the TJM version more albeit heavier
hey, Rob thanks for your comment what size would you like the mesh?
Zalderan Nathan
Hi, Perhaps go up a couple of gauges? Or say pots are for hanging. I think even without pots on - its going to give under the weight of steaks. From Andy’s review i was just put off by how quickly it deformed.
@@robhenshaw6845 Hi Rob yes we will look a doing thicker wire I have cooked a 2.2kg leg of lamb on it no problem click on the Zalderan logo to see the video. however, the wire does warp with the heat. and sags a little. Is this the problem or are you worried it will break? Thanks for your comment.

Deermeatfordinner uses this grill from a long time
Great idea and looks to work ok.

Hi GreyVeee thanks for your comment I am working on shipping to USA UK and Canada.
Similar principle to Simons Camp Grill that he sometimes uses......
Going to be hard selling at that price once the Chinese knock it off! Good price point would be $19.95. Think about insulating the handle someway!
