    Just got a Coleman Oven for $2 at a thrift store got to figure out how to make it work on an induction stove. Great video
    The chimney flue oven would work on a bullet stove just fine

    I use an old biscuit tin on the Bush box Firebox - I did modify it to open from the side with some tin snips, a bit of stove rope and some wingnuts etc. It's not posh like those but it's light and I can store the stove and kindling inside for transporting it. Good stuff though, I might treat myself for my Birthday.

    We have a refrigerator trailer on our property that we are converting into a little "cottage" and I plan on getting - likely - a Winnerwell stove with the chimney oven. Should heat it nicely and the oven will just be a bonus! We do 95% of cooking outside and since we are only ever there in summer or fall the stove doesn't need to do much more than take the chill off / dampness out when it rains.Thanks again Andy!

      They are meant to be used on a double burner so that stove vent and integral gas cylinder don't overheat.

    Very nice overview of camp oven options. I'm in the U.S. where we're fortunate to have made-in-Tennessee Lodge brand Dutch ovens. Cast iron is so versatile and durable, descendants a century from now could get just as much use from them, if the generations in between don't toss them. Dutch ovens are very popular with the U.S. teardrop trailer community, whose Teardrops & Tiny Travel Trailers forum has sections devoted to cast iron and dutch oven recipes. I have a Coleman oven that I bought in the early-90s and have never used but this video may motivate me to pack it this year. Thanks again for your informative videos. Btw, your friendly, calm demeanor is one of the standouts of your channel and one of the reasons I share them with my family and friends.

    As an older American, our family got a lot of use out of the folding Coleman oven for three-seasons use. As they had thin sheet metal walls with plenty of openings, getting anything like even-ish heat in them during cold weather was not going to happen. I have been a fan of cast iron cooking using natural wood charcoal. Having legs is very important for cooking over coals on the ground, as is having a trivet inside to protect the baking goods from the hot oven floor.

    • @livableincome
      @livableincome 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Apparently coleman ovens aren't good in the wind either. I agree the cast iron in coals is a great way to do things. Esp with feet.

      @ofermorag ปีที่แล้ว +3

      James. Good point about the Coleman having holes in it. As we enjoy winter camping in cold temps we had a tight cover made for ours. The material we used was. Welding blanket. It’s made the Coleman oven work well during snow camping and we’re grateful for it. Best to you and yours.

    Just a quick comment. I would recommend not using the Coleman oven over the butane stove as the butane will likely overheat and that could really cause some issues. I loved the Dutch Oven.

    • @livableincome
      @livableincome 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Good point Denton. A two burner propane stove would be better. Esp. if the cannister isn't a one pound one and well away from the stove.I have just seen other reviews that say these ovens really leak the heat. It is suggested something like a pizza stone go in the bottom to distribute the heat and that tin foil wrap the outside of the oven to reduce heat loss. An inside thermometer is also suggested as the one on the door is apparently unreliable. Lots of extra work. I love these wood burner ovens.

    • @sjors9110
      @sjors9110 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You can use the Coleman camp oven on almost all stoves, but absolutely not this one's, they are likely to collect the heat towards the gas tank, and especially when the cannister is getting more empty it will overheat and explode.... Almost had it happening once, luckily I checked regularly the gas canister on overheating, and I felt it was really getting hot.

    • @livableincome
      @livableincome 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@sjors9110 I agree.

    • @asd67lkj
      @asd67lkj 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@sjors9110 Good point. This is the reason why these stoves were banned in Australia for a while. After modification, they are now available again. Not allowed to use a pot/pan wider than the stove top.

    I particularly like the stovepipe oven design, not only is it an excellent oven, its also an excellent stack robber, directing otherwise lost heat into the tent/cabin!
    I bought a new Coleman Oven for £17:50 from Blacks in Kensington High Street during a clearence.
    Artesa make a Mini Cooking Pot, a cast iron pot with a cast iron lid.
    These are small, single person pots which I got to sit on my Fatsco Pet Stove top, and best of all, it was under £10, delivered!
    Industrial grade tinfoil is great for making durable reflectors, reflector ovens or improvised cookpots and ovens.
    Kirkland Food Service Foil is my preference.
    I like stovetop ovens, and have two US made versions which work well and are actually lightweight, unlike the heavyweight, but excellent Coleman Oven. Subscribed.

  • @The_Mister
    @The_Mister 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    I have the Coleman oven and can attest that they work very well. I've done cookies, cinnamon rolls, muffins, biscuits and even a cake. The only issue is the thermometer isn't very accurate so it takes some trial and error. Now I mainly use a small Weber grill. I drilled a hole into the lid to install a thermometer and use a trivet for baking in it. It also works very well and the Weber grill thermometer is spot on.

  • @charlesbertram986
    @charlesbertram986 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Hi everyone,
    It was interesting to see the particular Dutch oven you reviewed first up. Most of the 4WDers here in Australia use slightly different versions which have a significantly deeper lip around the edge of the lid, so you can heap and retain the coals on the lid more effectively - even while removing the lid to check cooking progress. While some may come with protruding feet like yours, the first thing a new purchaser does over here is to grind or cut those legs off! While they may be fine in Europe or North America on good paved roads, they only last about a kilometre on a corrugated dirt road or rough track in this country before they're punched up through the base of the oven, rendering the oven completely useless.
    Clearly everybody is entitled to their own views on this, but I definitely learnt from the mistakes of others!
    Whichever approach to oven cooking you eventually choose, you'll need to experiment, but don't give up after a single "failure" - it's not really that, just a learning experience.
    Enjoy! 👍👍👍

      TAOutdoors gets good use from his G-Stove system. I like the optional oven and the optional hot water tank accessories. Since each of those accessories is stovepipe mounted, only one of them can be used at a time. My preferred option is to purchase a system with a side water tank and a stovepipe oven: tea and buns ready at the same time!

    Andy, are you worried about the Coleman oven you have covering the canister cover?
    I have a vintage ‘kubex
    wonder oven’ which is a similar size to the Coleman but my stove instructions don’t allow for using pans larger than 10.5 inch diameter so that the canister can’t be covered and reach unsafe temperatures. I use mine on the larger bottled gas double burner stove I have as the gas bottle sits well away from the stove.
    Many of the portable single burner stoves now have a safety guard that prevents a pan from covering the gas canister compartment.
    Love your videos, I have a bit of a camping stove obsession lol.

    You can make a Dutch oven, just with your sleeping bag too, but that is gas powered and not applicable to open fire (very dangerous due to materials used and added gas does not help in this). But it's a very cheap and easy, do it yourself alternative. It's not very efficient in warming food, but is a lot of fun if you have someone to display it to.
