You technically fight him once in the Ruins, as Omega Flowey, and then as Asriel. Even at the end of the genocide route, he’s the last life taken. It really shows how central he is to the story.
Another way of looking at it is that’s he’s the players equal, their rival, and in some cases their future should the player go the Genocide route. Before we arrived, he had the power to save and load, so Flowey experienced everything until he finally turned to murder, curiosity lead him there, and curiosity leads us there too. The only hint of the player being a seperate entity iirc is from Chara and like *maybe* a few other characters.

I felt in a very strange way, it was as if an old friend was shaking my hand in a very dangerous and serious situation, a feeling I have never felt, it was so epic to see how all the sins of flowey were dragged down his back, like on a perfect day to play ball, while the flowers bloom, flowey was united with all souls, but they were aware that it was not Asriel who was doing it, it was flowey, Asriel didn't control his new body, he regretted all his actions without any control to stop, frisk, he went there to avenge the souls, maybe the monsters lost hope, but the souls didn't, without a doubt, I was filled with determination
