First things to do after you get a dirt bike!

  • hey guys, these are the first things I would recommend to do after you get a new or used dirt bike. This are important parts of dirt bike maintenance and will help you to keep your bike performing as it should. We are working on 2023 Kawasaki KX250 in this video but this applies to all the dirt bikes, 2 stroke and 4 stroke.

    For the price of these new bikes, The dealer should take care of all the greaseing and set up.

      I never take apart my bike to grease things and never had a problem

      @@trippgraham4751 After not greasing the linkage, and never taking it apart, how do you know you don't have a problem? Take it apart after 2 hard seasons of off road ricing and washing, and I bet you find a problem if you actually work on your bike. Now, properly lubed and not power washed carelessly, 2 years is nothing. Some manufactures put no grease as all in them. They won't last 2 hard seasons with out some issues.

      Why should that be the dealers responsibility? Why should the retailer perform quality control, totally at their cost that would probably eliminate all the profit they get that justifies selling it in the first place? After all,--this is general maintenance,---no matter what the bike costs. What exactly are you going to hold yourself responsible for, with the property you just bought for your self?

      Now, you can get the dealer to check it over for you. But you don't want to pay for it.

    Rado - For the life of me I don't understand why bike manufacturers don't put zerks in the linkage to use a grease gun or rifle bore the bolts so they are hollow with grease distribution holes and a zerk on the end.........Husqvarna did that years ago with no problems. They may say it will weaken the bolt but I do not believe that is the case.........I've broken frames but I've NEVER broken any linkage that was set up like that. I've used a lathe to set up Japanese bikes like that without any problems. Thanks, Tom P.S. They must save a whole damn nickel on each unit by not greasing.

      Even my old 2018 ttr230 had zerk fittings

    Great video Rado...glad your back riding again...100% agree about going through and greasing all the bearings...the manufacturers tend to not put any on them recently. 😮

    Just bought a ‘93 KDX200 in November. Linkage bearings were pulverized into a rusty powder. Replaced everything. Like New!!

    Yes, it is true that some of the manufactures don't lube the linkage/steering stem bearing very well, and they should be checked. But the first 2 things you need to check IMO is the engine oil level,---and make sure the air filter is oiled. I rode my brand new 1988 Honda CR250 for a week, partly in the sand, assuming my air filter was oiled, it was not. I went to clean it, and with a quick swipe of my finger in the air box boot to the carb, I excavated a finger full of sand mixed with premix oil. I cleaned it out, and rode it for the summer. Luckily, that was the first year with the cylinder "Nikasil" coating, (that all coatings are compared to.). The piston was all scratched up, but the hard cylinder plating was fine.
    You won't be so lucky with intake and exhaust valves. :)
    There are many things you should look over. But we usually wait until it breaks. It is a learning experience. :)

    Good to know I change the oil and grease my chain but I've never greased anything else for the past two years I think I better get on it and check it

      125 2 stroke would be a good option or maybe 250 4 stroke

    It’s embarrassing how little lubrication is in these bikes. I did my 22 kx a couple months back. They were “oiled” at best.
