"Supposedly" the dress code was implemented to dignify chess and the players. A photo posted online clearly shows the FIDE president dressed in jeans and sneakers in a formal meeting with a senior Chinese government official. What is allowed to the top leadership of FIDE is not allowed to chess players. COMPLETE HYPOCRISY!!!

The rules for meeting a government official were not broken, the rules of the tournament were broken. It is more like consistency than hypocrisy, Magnus had a "Do you know who I am??" moment and I feel bad that they couldn't be a bit more corrupt in the circumstance. Chess is a HIGHLY rigid bag of rules and regulations, Magnus is no innocent or naieve party, he probably has used his power many times in the past and people have bent to his wishes. He has earnt the right to power trip though, this is not bad behavior it is more in the colorful category.

The rule leaves some room for interpretation. Jeans are not strictly forbidden if it is business attire. And that's the point. Magnus is one of the best-dressed chess players and his style is well maintained in the business world. Therefore, the move against him is clearly an insult and was not necessary according to the rules.

If FIDE had any principles, they would have banned magnesium for what he did to Hans. Doesn't mean it makes sense to forfeit him over fashion jeans. They were probably more expensive than the pants most of the players were wearing, the dress code is moronic. I can understand if they ban swim trunks and flipflops, as it creates a spectacle, but any sort of fashion attire seems appropriate for chess. This isn't the 1950's.

Wearing jeans DOES NOT in any way affect the game of chess to the point where it justifies penalizing the player with game disadvantages (e.g., being banned from the next round). FIDE should've just fined him more, especially since he said he'll change tomorrow.

The hard part is to organize rated events for all player levels across the world. Every top GM you see today started as a beginner. Even Magnus started out as an unrated player climbing the rating ladder and earning his title norms. Without an organization like FIDE, there would be no upcoming rising stars and it will just be the same few guys playing closed invitationals again and again. That gets boring quickly. Where is the entertainment for chess viewers if not witnessing rising stars get wins against the current best and making their way to the top to mark the next generation of players?

Magnus agreed he will change the next day. He did not make any game fraud. This is a mind game and you can’t be disrupting them with rules in the middle of the day. He got out of classical chess because he says that weaker players can cover by memorizing theory but its actually him who struggles against new lines. Chess960 is proof of that(13.5-2.5 loss against wesley so is humongous). He was losing rating points and wanted to be eternally 2800. He stopped playing classical thus. Now he throws tantrums over a thing that can be managed easily when being warned multiple times. If it is a rule you have agreed to play upon, abide by it. As simple as that. But fans worship him. So he does what he wants.

This is just the tip of the iceberg. The fact players are told they cannot play in other non FIDE tournaments is totally rediculous as Magnus and others pointed out.
Dress codes are dumb -- BUT... almost every sporting event at the highest levels of the game have them. You cannot play Wimbledon in all black. You cannot play a snooker event in shorts and a t-shirt. You cannot wear cowboy boots to play in the Superbowl. FIDE gave him time to correct the issue. Magnus chose not to (on principal that he didn't want to be told what to do). FIDE have a zillion issues. However, this is all on Magnus!
You might be right if Magnus was wearing T-shirt and shorts, but Magnus was well-dressed.
As a spectator: Optically as a spectator you won't notice anything off about his attire. You probably won't even know the exact dress-code they were provided.
As a player: None of the players cared. No one lodged a complaint because no one cares. In fact, in a Take Take Take interview of Day 2, Ian mentioned there were like dozens of guys technically violating the dress code everyday down the playing hall. Doesn't seem like they were all penalized like Magnus was.
If the audience can't tell anything is off, the players don't care, then why is this rule being enforced to the extent of not only a fine but round forfeit?
FIDE also operated on principle - the principle that rules must be followed no matter how pointless and nitpicky it is, and no matter how little it is affecting anyone at all. And just like Magnus, they were stubborn in not allowing Magnus to continue playing without going back. Even if he was well-dressed. Even if neither the audience nor players - nobody cares. Even if Magnus said it was a genuine accident. No ifs no buts. Not only are you fined, but change or your round is forfeit.
FIDE is being unreasonably stringent over a nitpick nobody cares about, and they have been pulling this on players every year, not just Magnus. Magnus was standing up against FIDE's nonsense, that's why he left by 'matter of principle'. You can't say FIDE is completely faultless when FIDE is doing nobody favor, not the fans, not the players, with their stringent regulations.
I think increasing fines for each match played without adhering to dresscode makes sense. But refusing to let him (or anyone) play is petty and unreasonable.
I see this as magnus taking the hit to start the conversation.
they didn't block him from playing, they let him finish his round and asked, after the next round, which would have a break, for him to change, he's staying 5 minutes away from the venue, just have someone from his team, bc he's never alone, to get him some pants.

I like that idea a lot, because as long as the players aren’t wearing something very immodest there is no reason they can’t play. While that gives FIDE the control that they want.
But there should also probably be reform in the requirements themselves. Like I’m sure Nepo’s sport shoes that he got fined on today are much quieter then the acceptable (but loud) dress shoes Alireza wore and got told off on DURING a candidates game.

Magnus was not happy about FIDE hassling players not to play a (Freestyle?) tournament. He mentions this but I suspect this goes deeper. Serious lack of proper mediation here methinks. That’s what I’m thinking too. Like we don’t know all the details of the freestyle thing but there’s clearly a lot of underlying tension going on that probably started before the freestyle drama and will keep continuing. Today maybe Magnus’s last straw broke. And when you have the fame and GOATness of Magnus Carlsen you don’t need FIDE if you don’t want to work with them. Ex. Carlsen didn’t need to keep playing the WC to still be considered #1, the GOAT of chess, and keeping his current fame status.
Maybe Magnus is thinking of starting his own federation. It felt like he has been contemplating about detaching himself from chess for a while now and becoming a businessman instead

FIDE was petty and out to get Magnus. If $200 fine doesn't hurt Magnus, they wanted him to feel it so they banned a game from him. FIDE was power tripping for sure. Magnus promised to correct his attire the next day, but FIDE demanded TODAY. They wanted to hurt Magnus and if $200 fine couldn't do the job, they wanted to take a game from him. They basically forced Magnus to act in principle otherwise Magnus would've paid the fine and fixed his attire the next day. FIDE did the opposite of discretion, showing they were out to teach Magnus a lesson and they were power tripping on aggro mode. Their claim of wanting a "peaceful" approach in this interview was such a clear lie.

Must repeat this isn't bypassing security checks, this isn't gaining extra time, this isn't allowing Magnus to take back a move, etc. This isn't even a ripped t-shirt. This is a matching jeans that hardly matters once seated. Instead of discretion, FIDE didn't just fine, they went the extra step to go full aggro. It is the opposite of discretion. They were petty and if $200 couldn't hurt Magnus, they wanted to make Magnus feel it.
Key word here is discretion. This isn't any rule breaking that is important to the match. It's your reigning champ saying he'll fix it tomorrow and you want it today, and $200 fine can't hurt him so you do something that will hurt him. Silly power tripping, lack of discretion, using a senseless rule as an excuse.
FIDE chose to escalate. In this interview, FIDE CEO claimed they chose peace but it's clearly false. From a fine, then a promise from Magnus, then a choice of escalation from FIDE to ban Magnus. Absolutely the opposite of discretion and an escalation on purpose to ban a game. This was simply the opposite of what the CEO claimed.
The chess community sees this as FIDE trying to capitalize on an honest mistake to make an example of Magnus, given that he is the GOAT, and to target all the freestyle chess players. FIDE cares more about itself than about chess. This was an ego-driven business failure. They gave him a symbolic chance, knowing that forfeiting one game would take him out of the running-a joke. #FIDEFASCISM 🤣😂

If a dress code doesn't serve a mechanical purpose it's inappropriate. "The premises deserve respect" - he nailed it there. It's not about respecting the game, or the other players, it's about pageantry and making the organisation feel fancy and important because in the wider world FIDE just doesn't matter. They are irrelevant. So they impose these rules to pomp themselves up.
The "no poor people clothes" are entirely out dated, and act as nothing but a barrier for people entering the higher levels of the sport. Get a grip of yourselves. I'd far rather see respect for the players and their skill and allowing them to dress as they like. Give me players in high fashion playing others in dungarees. It should be about the sport, about the game, the clothes should be irrelevant.

Even though Magnus wasn’t going to win probably it’s still a huge hit. My motivation to watch kinda went down 50%. It wasn’t a sports shorts or anything, it was a classy jeans. Probably costing more than most other suits there. If I would look around I would probably see others guys rocking not classy/well trimmed beards, hairstyles or even a cheap looking suit.

Magnus has made insane comebacks in the history. Watch his recent Superbet Poland Rapid & Blitz 2024, where he went on a winning rampage of 10 games in a row against Super GMs when necessary to win the tournament. If he had won next 5 games, he could have been no.1 in Rapid as well.

The only tournament that has a dress code is Wimbledon, and that rule is that you haft to wear white.
Nadal experimented with this where he wore both white tank top (shirt without sleeves) and shorts over knees. This was fine and Wimbledon probably cleared out the rules for the future.
But afaik, tennis is casual when it comes to dress code.
rules are rules, you cannot debate the rules while the tournament is going on, only before or after it, magnus is not special in the eyes of the arbiter who follows the rules all players agreed on before they signed to play in the tournament.

Wimbledon is the strictest, but other tennis Grand Slams do have a dress code. For example, "Sweatshirts, gym shorts, dress shirts, T-shirts or any other inappropriate attire shall not be worn during a match (including the warm-up)."

This comments section is a little crazy; like or hate FIDE, intentionally breaking the rules that are in a contract you signed for is going to be on the player all day long. Yes the dress code is stupidly outdated but Magnus knew the dress code and didn't follow it (and then lied about not thinking about it). I mostly watch these because of Carlsen so I take no joy from saying this but this is obviously orchestrated and at best a little disingenuous of him. Him and Hikaru are also misrepresenting FIDE's position in some of this.
