I love videos like this, real opinions from real ladies who paint full time is invaluable advice. It's funny, I'm a big fan of the FolkArt chalk paint. I don't sand between coats and if you apply slightly thinner coats it basically self levels. 2+ coats of topcoat (after cured) and it holds up great for a lower end price point on less used furniture. I'm really dying to get my hands on some Melange One in the next few weeks too. Thanks for the thorough, honest review!
Hi Jenn, yes, honestly, with the 2 coats of topcoat, there was almost no difference between the black FolkArt and the black Melange One and the FolkArt is definitely a better price so a great product to use for sure.
That was a shocker. But I've never used Melange paint as it's not available in Ireland. Well, truthfully the only one of those I've used is the fusion. The only thing I'll say that I was thinking when you were applying the fusion was "they're going to get brush strokes". It does say not to work it back and forth. Minimal swiping will mean it self levels and I have found this to be true. I only get a little bit of paint on the tip of the brush and never submerge it or I will end up having to work it and get brush strokes. A little goes a long way. I believe it's the same for the silk. But I'm surprised at the fact that the fusion scratched so easily. I haven't done a scratch test on it yet but will have to now. Thank you so much for doing this comparison. Extremely useful.
Thanks Emer, a lot of great feedback there. I really love all of those paints and they were pretty close with the exception of the scratch test. It makes me wonder if the One just has more top coat in their formula than the other 2. And it was more of a satin sheen (which Dani prefers).
Still watching. Antique type store I work in carried Farmhouse chalk paint and Shabby chalk paint. Store down the road just closed so my boss was able to get a contract with Dixie Belle. Dixie Belle's headquarters is about a 20 minute drive from my house, so I've been excited to try. I've enjoyed Farmhouse and Shabby, once they cure, they're extremely durable. I usually sand a tiny bit before putting in a top coat. Thank you for your input. Getting more into painting and flipping furniture, so this was awesome!
I've also noticed cure times are extremely important for many chalk paints. If I'm moving/bumping pieces within 48 hours of painting they scratch easy. After a week, the durability goes up as curing continues. Dixie Belle is supposed to take up to 30 days. As they cure they're adhesion goes way up and they really stick.
@@kristenanderson3084 Thanks, Kristen! Great comments! We still use all three of these all-in-one paints and they all are just wonderful to work with. We agree about the durability overall after curing but we still usually cover the horizontal surfaces that get a lot of traffic with an extra layer of top coat just to be on the safe side.
Hi Rosana, We have not tried Heirloom Traditions yet but have heard it is a really good paint. We would certainly like to do some more review videos on paint and other products that we use a lot. Thanks for the suggestion!😊🤗
Be interesting to see how blackberry house paint, heirloom traditions paint and wise owl one hour enamel rate. Thank you for this comparison. It was informative.
Well thank you ladies this was a good testing I have always used the Rustoleum chalk paint and found when I lightly sanded in between coats it worked best for me but it was interesting to see all of your testing with these different products thank you for sharing have a great day
Hi, yes, we tested Dixie Belle's "Silk" paint which is an all-in-one paint with primer and top coat. It is a great paint but liked the results of Melange One and Fusion a bit better.
Happy that I stumbled on your paint comparison tutorial. Thank you for taking the time to do this. I haven't tried many of these paints. I'd love to hear what you think of Fusion after using it on a much larger surface,. I hear it can be difficult to paint large areas without brush strokes. But, lets face it, if there's any sheen to a paint all, brush strokes will be more evident than if there's none.
Hi Kimberly, thank you for watching! This is Sherry and I used the fusion on a cabinet a couple of months ago. It was a light blue (French Eggshell) and pretty matte. I really couldn't see any brush strokes on that piece. Fusion recommends brushing in one direction with very little paint to help eliminate brush strokes, too. They have some beautiful colors and we will definitely continue to use their paints.
Aloha, we would love to hear your thoughts on this All In One paint review and which paints you prefer to use. We are traveling out of cell range for a few days and may not be able to reply until we are back. Cheers, Dani and Sherry
Great comparison of the different paints that are available. There are so many, it can be hard to choose. We are always testing different paints to see what works best for us. Thanks for this informative video!😀😀
We were very surprised by the results and know it was a limited test but I definitely feel good about not having to top coat the One on vertical surfaces.
💫Hi there, thank you! Was wondering if you ever mixed a chalk with a mineral, to achieve better color and not rebuy??? And maybe a fusion with a silk dixie?? what would happen? Would is be ok? I do not want to keep buying colors I really want to mix, so?? I have own lots of fusion, silk, and regular chalk by Dixie. Ever mix them?? And thank you!!!
Yes, we are super budget friendly over here! We are always mixing paints to get every last drop before needing to buy a new jar. We've never had issues with mixing chalk and mineral paints, but it will of course change the texture a bit. We pretty much spray all our paint, then spray our top coat. So mixing paints hasn't changed the feel of the final product for us.
Hi Julie! Thank you! We usually use Zibra and Purdy brushes and we both gravitate towards the shorter palm brushes but that's just a personal preference, I know some people really like to use a small foam or microfiber roller, too. But our favorite method for No brushstrokes and fast work is with our Fuji paint sprayer.😊👋
Thanks Dean and Chantal. Are you able to get Melange in Jersey? We don't have any retailers near us and have to order it on-line. It takes 2-3 weeks so we are have to plan ahead or just use what we have.
@@secondchanceohana your very welcome! No we actually can’t get it over in Jersey. We’ll do a little research and see if we can order some. Living on a tiny island is a pain in the ass 😂
I’m planning to paint my first furniture piece and this was so helpful!! I’m curious about the durability of melange and silk paints with liquids and stains, especially without using an additional top coat? Would love any insight that you have! 🥹
Hi Brinna, thank you! Both of those seem to be super durable after curing for about 30 days. We haven't had any problems with stains or liquids on our pieces BUT we always try to wipe up anything pretty quickly AND we usually do put on an extra layer of top coat (especially to the flat surfaces that get more wear and tear.) Good luck and have fun!!!!🤗
Hi Tara, thanks for sharing your ratings. What is about Fusion that you like it the best? (Just personal preference or something specific?) I used it on a piece that just came out gorgeous and I love some of their colors so we will be using it again but am just curious. Thanks
Thanks Taryn, yeah, its hard on Pops as we have about 5 videos in progress at any one time and he gets to organize and edit all that footage. But it was pretty easy for us. We just set it aside and kind of forgot about it. We were going to only give it 3 weeks to cure...
Hi Zoraida, yes, absolutely. Most veneers are wood but we have had great success on all the plastic type of laminates, too. Just be sure to thoroughly clean and scuff sand the surface first. (We used to do a coat of primer on all the slick surfaces first but don't anymore and haven't had any problems.)🤗
Wow Melange won! It is my preferred paint but I haven’t tried the one. I have only tried Dixie Belle Silk and I like that as well. I will have get some Melange one now 😊 Thanks ladies for the review 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

@@secondchanceohana I have to Make a Good effort to Try fusion All in one paint. .I've heard so many good things. ..Are All fusion Paints an All in one?
Hi AC, I'm not sure but we can usually do two average pieces with a 32 oz. size so I think that size may work for a set of bunk beds but you may require an extra coat (and more paint) if you are using a light color like white or yellow. Melange may be able to give you more detailed information on that question. Thanks and good luck with your project!
You could theoretically put extra coat only on the exposed side of the bunk bed and skip the one facing the wall if you wanted to stretch it out... I'd paint that side last before buying more paint if you're not sure
We loved this comparison! We always recommend anyone painting melamine, laminate or other shiny, coated surfaces use our Ultra Grip before painting, or it will easily scratch off. We have a prep guide that helps break down different surfaces so all of our customers can have forever lasting results. Brushing in one direction with very little paint will eliminate brush strokes as well. Fusion is highly pigmented and a little goes a very long way!
Thank you! And thanks for the tips. We love all three of the All-in-one paints we tested and are currently using Fusion on a project right now. It's so nice to have so many great paints at our disposal.
@@secondchanceohana no problem! And yes! There’s so many wonderful products out there for artists to enjoy 😊 thanks again for creating with our paints on some of your pieces. Please don’t hesitate to reach out if you ever have any questions!
The only flaw with this...is your have to let paint cure and if you use chalk you can lightly sand for a baby but smooth finish. I think this video is missing a lot of critical factors and details.. one chalk should not be in there the process is totally different
Hi Christine, thanks for your feedback. You are right, this was not a scientific experiment and definitely more based on our experience with this particular trial. We did let all the paint samples cure for several days and then applied 2 coats of polyurethane and then let everything cure for about 5 weeks before testing. We also did sand between every coat whether it was primer, paint or top coat. And every sample that had a polyurethane application was very smooth to the touch (chalk and all-in-one) the big difference were between the samples that did not have top coat applications. Our main conclusions from this is that we believe we do not always need to use a primer and that we prefer Melange One without top-coat on low traffic surfaces and any of them work fine when do use top-coats on high traffic surfaces. (Sorry... that was a really long explanation.) 🤗
What about Beyond Paint?
How does that compare?
Hi Jared. We have not tested Beyond Paint yet but would love to do that. We may have to do an All-in-one review ,part 2???🤗
