    I had read somewhere that the reason why the Persian Immortals we're given that name was because their numbers were always the same. And they wore armour to make them indistinguishable from each other. If any of their number died in combat they were immediately replaced. Giving them the impression that they were immortal. Their numbers never diminished or changed. So to the public these men were the immortal servants of the king. I don't know if there's any truth to that story but it's a cool story nonetheless. It would also make sense with the crimson guard having plastic surgery to disguise their numbers and their identities.

    The GGI is basically an update on the basic CG as other characters that got updates in 91 including Dusty, Grunt, Snake Eyes, Cobra Commander Snow Serpent, Sci fi, Mercer Hawk, BAT, Low light and Snow Serpent

    To be honest, if I'd still been buying Joes in 1991 and had the pocket money to army-build (I could only afford a single CG figure in the '80s) I would probably have treated the Immortal as more of a special-weapons trooper in a CG unit rather than an elite; I'd have maybe one in a 5-man squad and use them in a heavy gunner role. The design of the uniform even bears that out - it makes sense that the guy with the big heavy artillery strapped to both arms, the extra missiles on his back and the large-caliber ammo belt hanging off his leg would probably be a lot less agile, and would therefore need heavier armor since he'd be unable to drop prone or dive for cover.
    It doesn't seem like a higher-rank uniform to me so much as a mission-specialist outfit, with a heavy rigid chestplate worn over the standard CG uniform (which I always saw as fabric, even though it likely had protective layers beneath) and perhaps a redesigned helmet to accommodate targeting aids for the missiles and for a little extra protection. Also, he has those canister grenades on his left leg, which might well be gas grenades such as smoke or tear-gas to cover advances and retreats.
    Basically, the squad forms up around this guy as they advance slowly at his pace, the smoke grenades are thrown to cover an assault, then the rest of the more-agile lightly-armored CGs break away into cover while the Immortal stands his ground with superior armor firing hi-ex and large-caliber covering fire as the rest of the team advances to take objectives or eliminate targets. This seems like the most logical tactical use for a missile-toting, machinegun-spraying, heavily-armored trooper - heavy fire support for faster and more versatile squad members. The smoke and hardened armor makes up for him being left exposed while his squadmates are advancing in cover and taking aimed shots rather than firing indiscriminately.
    The idea of having more than one (or perhaps two in a larger team) of these guys seems like a misuse of their equipment to me... having five or six of these Immortals walking slowly in tight formation as a single unit is just presenting more vulnerable targets with no lighter troops to run interference and draw fire. No amount of beefed-up body armor is going to counter concentrated fire aimed solely at the soldiers who can't easily get into cover because they're weighed down with such a heavy loadout. All that gets you is a lot of dead CGs, which is a waste of all that elite training as well as several sets of advanced weapons systems. Maybe that's what's meant by "Immortal" - without lighter CG troops as backup, they don't last long on this mortal coil...
    I know I'm overthinking what's basically a toyline designed for kids who like big guns, but my adult brain just looks at a guy carrying three missile tubes, a heavy-caliber machine gun and a bulky chestplate and sees an easy target that can't get out of the way, and a liability if used incorrectly.

    • @CGJ7755
      @CGJ7755 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      You did a great job explaining the squad tactics. The crimson guard immortal titanium SNAKE-BELLY armor was lightweight and could withstand 7.62 nato rounds, but of course concentrated fire can defeat any armor. I showcased some elements of that here, but stayed in front (as I was the one who funded the photoshoot HAHA)

    I remember reading somewhere that the Persian Immortals had a high mortality rate, but since they had the same uniform and face masks, it gave the illusion they were immortal because dead ones were replaced by identical live soldiers.

    G.I. Joe need time - we can all speculate, My guess is, since Hama was writing the cards, we get our clue with absolute fanaticism to Cobra Commander. In the comics, some of Cobra's upper echelon were always plotting against Cobra Commander. I think this meant Cobra Commander didn't need to worry about these guys having more allegiance to Tomax and Xamot than himself. If i recall, the Crimson Gaurd was on the Commander's side during the Cobra Civil War, but he would also be paranoid or maybe cagey enough to realize they could change allegiance as Mindbender and Firefly had, or even break out on their own as Destro with his Iron Grenadiers. It might not have gotten fleshed out enough as Hama used these cards as rough character background for use in the comics. But, maybe we're all wrong, and will sadly, most likely never know. I Love these little trips back to childhood. Keep up the good work!

    to my understanding, The regular CG's were the foot soldiers in the ranks. The Immortals were the equivalent of Majors or colonials. The Commanders were the Generals that served directly under the twins and worked as field commanders for major operations.

    • @CGJ7755
      @CGJ7755 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Regular CGs were more of clandestine agents that only saw combat under particular circumstances. CGIs were more combat ready, armored and well equipped, but met the same educational and firearm training requirements. Crimson Guard Commanders were CGs and CGIs who were promoted as Tomax and Xamot were sparsely seen after the Benzheen campaign and they needed officers to lead and support operations.

    I always assumed the CGI were simply the regular CGs suited up for combat or other higher-risk missions. The regular CG uniform was for ceremonial use and typical guard duty, whereas the CGI uniform was meant for combat and field use.

  • @tonyjackson4078
    @tonyjackson4078 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    The Immortal ranks were high ranking businessmen, minor royalty, or adventurous celebrities who were "weekend warriors". They maintained anonymity and were suited up with heavy armor and heavy weapons.
    In exchange to go on kill sprees with no consequences they'd help fund Cobra.
    I'd say the "Immortal" name is semi derogatory in the ranks as these wealthy, untrained, bloodthirsty thrillkillers were given high end armor and weapons to "insure" their safety.

    Great review. Back in 91, I had the impel trading card prior to finding the figure. So I was surprised at a slight difference between the bio on the Impel card and the one on the package. Impel starts "The Crimson Guard Immortal is made up of well known dignitaries and diplomats from around the world." That seems to indicate that they are officials of higher importance than local politicians and lawyers. But then the same card also mentions suing and auditing.

    In the comic continuity, crimson guard immortals were recruited as combat ready crimson guards to bolster the ranks, and in the dic series, crimson guard immortals were meant as the new generation of tougher crimson guards, essentially a ver 2, take NOTE: in the cartoon they were simply referred to as CRIMSON GUARDS and CRIMSON GUARDSMAN.

I always loved this design I always see him as a more heavy weapons trooper then officer .I have heard of that head change with the Rock viper but never seen one in reality !
    I know you don't cover them on your channel but there is a Funskool version too where they did change up the weapons colours .but the red is a darker maroon for the uniform which I also dig . oh also hoping to see that crimson Guard commander review as no-one has reviewed that figure as far as I can see

    As far as i know companion is a greek word. Alexander the Great's personal cavalry were called the companion cavalry. I doubt he would have taken that name from the Persians being they were mortal enemies at the time. By the way, I have this figure. He's sitting with a bunch of other GI Joe toys and other toys from my childhood in a plastic tub. I even remember the back card for the figure you showed. I assume his weapons are lying amongst all the other toys somewhere.

    I think the "immortal" moniker is because they appear to be armored tanks. Where as the other CGs all act as body guards and secret service, these guys are walking out in body armor and heavy weapon platforms. He could very well of come with a gatling gun. They are immortal because the armor takes all the enemy's fire, and they still stand and secure the exit for high ranking Cobras or objectives.

    • @CGJ7755
      @CGJ7755 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It hasnt been talked about in detail yet, what we do know is the "immortal" was added at the last moment, he was originally going to just be called "Crimson Guard" per the 1991 catalog and cardbacks... it could be a combination of the two (both very heavily armored and also a unit that always has a replacement and thus the group remains "immortal")

    Great review, I had this figure when growing up, too bad you forgot to mentioned that figure was in the dic series, don't know if they were in the comics, now here is a weird thought to me does the crimson guard immortal look like the sentry robots from the movie the black hole, even the way the weapons look like from the black hole movie, leave a comment if you agree or disagree

      @Mad Mark I just took a look at the Sentry Bot from "black hole" and I have to disagree... not only does the CGI look much better, I cant seem to find any inspiration in him... the helmet of the robot seems to have that "samurai" neck cover for the back, slightly, but thats about it. The armor is entirely different. The CGI looks like a well outfitted battlefield assault trooper with a jumpsuit, webgear, and the iconic armor which is segmented and meant to look "serpent-like", which is why its called "snake-belly" armor. Thanks for bringing to my attention, Ive never even heard of disney's blackhole!
