Honestly not the worst figure from the 90's. Not even the loudest color scheme. I like the concept for the figure, which plays into his comic book storyline and the Universal Soldier vibe he has with that headset. As an aside (and as a kid who came into the line in the very late 80's) I would suggest that part of the reason some of these wacky late 90's figures were special to me (and I'm guessing others) were that these later reissues of certain core characters represented the first and only chance to add those characters to my collection. They could have pretty much done anything and slapped these character names on them and I would have been happy to have them. I think in my imagination a lot of these figures were their cooler 80's versions (though again I actually like the cyborg vibe of this particular figure on its own merits, just maybe not the neon yellow pants and accessories).
One positive thing about the Battle Corps era of the 90s is that it brought back a lot of the classic characters that everyone knew from the old cartoon, but who had been out of production for years. Sure, they were neon coloured and kinda goofy, but they were the only physical versions of the characters that were available to kids who hadn't been around in the early 80s.
I fully agree, it was a lot of fun seeing the classic characters come back. My favorite figure of this era is Iceberg version 2 since he has more accessories than his version one counterpart and still keeps the military look apart from the neon yellow ski mask and gloves.
The battle Corp era Cobra Commander was the only one I could get as a kid. When I started recollecting I got him and Desert Storm 91 duke as my first starters. I definitely do appreciate what Hasbro was trying to do in the 90’s
Good video. Back in 1993 when I was interested in getting the 30th Anniversary Green Beret figure, I bought these versions of the characters. But their updated designs made me want to collect the original versions. And someday I'll get back into rebuilding my collection of original 80's GI Joes. As much as I like the 2007 remakes, the originals are still the best. Each week I am inspired by your videos to recollect them all. Thank you sir.
I love the graphics and animation in this episode. It shows that these figures really do reflect the design trends of the 90s, not just in toys but in industrial design and fashion etc. I find that very interesting even though it's not what anyone wants for GI Joe.
Love this review. I was 13 years old when I snagged this figure off a Wal mart peg in Wilmington N.C. I fell in love with it as I saw it as a logical version of the good doctor after he somehow weaseled his way out of the tanker before he ate the tainted C-rations that disposed of the others. If Zartan and Billy could escape why couldnt he lol. I bought two figures that day I remember so well because I was out of hardcore toy consumption but the other was Cross Country a story for another day.
Haha! This was the Dr. Mindbender that I had. I liked his cybernetic look and yes that headpiece always reminded me of Lobot too. I didn't know the comic story so I just went with he experimented on himself. I always preferred this version because of the scifi cyborg parts and that unlike the original, this one at least had a shirt so he wasn't running around half naked lol
Bored at work during this quarantine, I'm going back over these reviews and having a great time. One thing I was surprised didnt get a mention - Mindbender's cart art has him wearing the original Iron Grenadier's pants - meaning Hasbro likely intended to use a different waist and legs for this figure. Prehaps that tooling wasn't available, so they switched to the 86 Viper. Ironically, the Viper mold was reused heavily in the late 90s and early 2000s repaint series, always with an alternate waist and legs. So it may be that stealing them for use with this Mindbender caused them to be lost and those later substandard Viper builds were the result. So Mindbender robbed us of years of potential Viper repaints... and we never even got a toned down reissue of this figure during that era, which could have redeemed it the way Sonic Fighters Bludd and Eco-Warrior Flint were!

I have a very sneaky suspicion that ol Dr MB was slated to be one of the Talking commander figures in the 90's , if you ever removed the pack from the Talking cobra commander you see how flat the back is, so guessing that's what the rectangular plate on MB's back is. also I do like the re-use of the Viper pants in yellow seems like Mb's jam. I just wish the yellow cybernetics had been in silver or at least black like the eye piece. I still think V2 is a improvement over the bare chested Strong man look .
DANG EFFINg A! THE 80,s had their shiz wired tight. The 90' got weird yes, but I am a fan of Mindbender. V2 wasn't hos best, but I like it. He looks like the offspring of Lonot and a Borg. Thanks for doing this one, and making if a lot of fun!
Love the intro, awesome review! I was out of GI Joe at this point of growing up. The very last item item from GI Joe my grampa bought me was the Avalanche! Never bought anything after that. Except when the 25th, 30th, and 50th line came out, then got back into GI Joe.
Another great vid HCC! loved the intro and your look at Dr. Mindbender v2. (I'm in the minority but I still like this figure, colours and all lol). Although I'd pick his more classic look from 86' or the 93' version if I was pressed to. I know it may have been a tough go for you HCC but thank you for taking a special look at some of these 90s joes for us :) I'm sure there must be some 90s figures you liked back in the day? :)

In the cartoon, I think Doc invented the mirrors to redirect the weather dominator. I feel like he invented something else when they needed something specific. He seems like a Joe counterpart.

The very strange part about the Transformers crossover issues were that they completely forgot about the giant robots having been around shortly after- then the TF G2 comics have the Decepticons destroy a bunch of Earth cities with no mention of those events in the Joe series. I get the feeling Hama was forced by Hasbro mandate to write those stories and nothing more.
Great review, I an glad my son didn't have this figure. He did have some of the 90's Joes but we did customize some for a more military look. There were a few good figures but few and far between. He looked like he was being converted into the Borg from Star Trek the Next Generation.
I think if I had this toy as a child he would have been more of a hi-tech prison warden and the gadgets all about him would have controlled the security systems of the prison. hey man this is off subject but I was tossing parachutes around the yard the other day while filming a little movie and my 1984 ripcord came off his chute and now I can't find him anywhere and I literally combed the entire yard do you have any suggestions as to how I can find him
Hasbro whoever was running it, drove Joe into the ground the 90s on. It was like they intentionally drove it toward and then off the cliff, reached terminal rainbow vomit velocity, and the impact left a crater of unrecognizable bloody confetti. It took no prisoners as far as copying multiple IPS. Everyone and everything was along for the ride... riding the lightning that is! And they didn't even bother to wet the sponge.
The first figure was better but I lke this one too. I prefer the brighter colors over the boring military drab colors. Thats why Cobra figures look so much better then most Joes. I do love me some Footloose though. He is my favorite Joe.
The 90s were a terrible time for GI Joe, but in retrospect, those figures were better than what we've gotten since (vastly improved articulation aside).
I think I heard that this Mindbender was going to be an Eco Warrior bad guy but got moved to Battle Corp because they didn't continue that sub team. He might have had a water squirting pack and one original accessory if he was part of Eco.
I could be wrong, but I think that's Major Bludd not Dr. Mindbender. If anything, I would think this version of Dr. Mindbender would have fit into the Mega Marines sub-line.
great review! while I prefer v1, my only complaint with this figure is the yellow... cobra blue would have went well with his trademark purple, or teal like the medi viper, or black, or white.... overall, he looks to be a fantastic update to a central, and very pivotal character, heck, this version even has a shirt!!! if the color pallet of this version were different, and the technical details received paint apps, I truly believe that this version would surpass its predecessor....
The concept of Dr. Mindbender was a good one... in the beginning. Something along the lines of a Dr. Mengele, a whacko dentist who knows about anesthesia and torture/interrogation, but boy they went off the deep end. Inventing battle androids, creating weaponry and making huge leaps forward in DNA technology. I have a feeling that's beyond the pay grade of a dentist. They should have left the weaponry/technology to Destro and of course scrapped the DNA stuff all together.
I had this dr. Mindbender it's a decent figure it worked well with my Cobra Commander and Zartan from the ninja force GI Joe it's funny that joke about that in the newer GI Joe comics fighting eco-terrorist too many ninjas and they say about 1994 and this is Sergeant Savage in the comic making fun of it thank you hooded Cobra Commander big fan show really enjoyed the episode

"The filecard calls this a 'Mind-Scrambling' Driller Gun. How is it 'mind-scrambling'...?" It's PURPLE AND YELLOW. Presumably, Cobra's armorers painted it those colours... ON PURPOSE. I don't know about you, but that scrambles MY mind.
I started with G.I. Joe as a child of the 80s and I still don't understand how it turned into that neon mishmash. Can anybody explain to me how the 90s became this neon colored acid trip for everything. I know it started somewheres in the 80s, but exactly why ?it was in no way practical for military toys to have wild bizarre coloring. Let alone so many of them had urine color on their uniforms or lemon color if you want to go the other direction.
Haha I know that Old Mindy #2 has been your favorite target when reviewing "weapons that actually fire" or whatever BUT somehow I missed this review!?!? Saturdays aren't usually a "Joe Day" for me as usually Mondays and Tuesdays I meet my.....Joe dealers.....BUT I was feeling some kind of way annnnnnd only one of my usuals was available so....I JUST picked up a Cobra Stinger w/ Driver COMPLETE w/F.C. & Blueprints.....for $60!!! Not bad....so I stopped by a NOT-SO usual dealer that happens to literally be at the end of my street, 3 or 4 blocks away. It's not a usual though as despite the owner being a HUGE Joe fan and really nice guy....he can't part with ANY 80's Joe stuff.....but has plenty of 90's stuff. Sooooo I was thinking I should get SOMETHING and.....Dr Mindbender v2 is what I'm holding now. $10 felt high buuuuut I do dig the LOWER half.....in black, blue and red.....on the VIPER.....I wish I was holding a Viper. BUUUUUUT the Cobra Stinger is AWESOME!!!! And......just wanted to say, Hoodie-Coco....emperor of Review-La, I hope youre hanging in there brother!!! Take all the time you need but rest assured you're cared about and an integral part of YoJoe on TH-cam. Feel better soon.....btw, I picked up a lazer-scoped airsoft pistol today too sooooo I suppose I needed a "FAVORITE TARGET" myself!!!
I gotta check YoJoe.com because mine also came with the bizarre "pistol" that came with the Iron Grenadier Soldier.....also in yellow. Haha I'm not a HUGE fan of that fun to begin with.....I just display my I.G. with his machine gun and sword on his hip and I actually have Destro V2 holding that red pistol....I actually display Destro V1 with a red accessories pack pistol that came with Zartan V1....I like Destro with a red gun.....IDK why? But I don't display Beachhead V2 with any of his OWN accessories either because......YELLOW is lame.
I always see these reviews of awful characters, and can't help but think if they kind of melded the 2 versions the character would be better! Great review! Thanks for sharing!

I was 9 years old in 93 this was the Dr. Mindbender I could get. Same for a lot of the 90's versions that HCC788 doesn't appreciate.

That particular pairing of light blue and neon yellow reminds me of 90’s Cable from the X-Men. I kind of like it.

It’s a Lakers themed Dr Mindbender. As a Lakers fan, what more could I even ask for?

Saturdays aren't usually a "Joe Day" for me as usually Mondays and Tuesdays I meet my.....Joe dealers.....BUT I was feeling some kind of way annnnnnd only one of my usuals was available so....I JUST picked up a Cobra Stinger w/ Driver COMPLETE w/F.C. & Blueprints.....for $60!!! Not bad....so I stopped by a NOT-SO usual dealer that happens to literally be at the end of my street, 3 or 4 blocks away. It's not a usual though as despite the owner being a HUGE Joe fan and really nice guy....he can't part with ANY 80's Joe stuff.....but has plenty of 90's stuff. Sooooo I was thinking I should get SOMETHING and.....Dr Mindbender v2 is what I'm holding now. $10 felt high buuuuut I do dig the LOWER half.....in black, blue and red.....on the VIPER.....I wish I was holding a Viper. BUUUUUUT the Cobra Stinger is AWESOME!!!!
And......just wanted to say, Hoodie-Coco....emperor of Review-La, I hope youre hanging in there brother!!! Take all the time you need but rest assured you're cared about and an integral part of YoJoe on TH-cam. Feel better soon.....btw, I picked up a lazer-scoped airsoft pistol today too sooooo I suppose I needed a "FAVORITE TARGET" myself!!!
I gotta check YoJoe.com because mine also came with the bizarre "pistol" that came with the Iron Grenadier Soldier.....also in yellow. Haha I'm not a HUGE fan of that fun to begin with.....I just display my I.G. with his machine gun and sword on his hip and I actually have Destro V2 holding that red pistol....I actually display Destro V1 with a red accessories pack pistol that came with Zartan V1....I like Destro with a red gun.....IDK why? But I don't display Beachhead V2 with any of his OWN accessories either because......YELLOW is lame.
I agree with most your video the only 90s figure out light was cross country he was the only one I was close to being a military type character

Dr Mindbender steals people's pants and paints them in crazy colors. (check figure description for context).
His file cards says he bionically (sp?) His badly damaged body and barely escaped with his life. He's not a zombie, hes more like tony stark.
Sadly this version was my first Dr. Mindbender before that I used Lord Dredd from Captain Power as my Dr. Mindbender.
