What a trashed and neglected Diesel engine looks like on the inside. Why do this?

Working on this little 305 Cat for a friend that bought it knowing it wasn’t right. I had inspected it and we decided a price based on knowing we’d more than likely have to overhaul the engine. 3,600 hours of neglect and this is what you get! Seems pretty typical coming from a utility company.....zero f’s given.

I need to do an update on it. After a clusterf**k finding a machine shop we got it bored .020 over, got the crank turned, fuel system etc done and it’s back to work. There’s a plug behind the cam that might as well have been made of kryptonite so we had a machinist friend make one. Thanks for the comment!
