Hey Taki, I would like to express my appreciation for this video and review of the GTR7 mini PC. As someone who has pre-ordered this device, I would greatly appreciate your guidance in setting up and configuring this unique product. I was particularly interested in your discussion of APU overclocking, and would be grateful if you could provide me with a detailed guide on this feature. Additionally, any other tips or best practices for setting up and optimizing the GTR7 would be highly valued. Thank you in advance for your time and expertise. I look forward to hearing from you soon.
Finally got a chance to answer this. This thing has a base TDP of 65W with the boost that they applied in the BIOS. At that level, you will have no problems reaching the max GPU clock and you will have close to full CPU clocks. If you stay with that TDP, the device will almost be silent. You start getting diminishing returns with this processor over 35W, but it's not an issue on a mini PC. I would do a 5 or 10W boost over the 65W as long as the fan noise doesn't bother you (it will go from dead quiet to making some noise). I would also overclock the GPU to at least 2.9GHz, especially for emulation. The tool that I used to do this is an internal engineering tool from AMD, but you can do the same things with some open source tools that exist. You're going to want to use something like Universal x86 Tuning Utility, but Handheld Control Panel from Project SBC has other useful features. These have a GUI and will be easy for you to see how to adjust what I am talking about. I've linked them below. Outside of that, there's no tuning that you'll need to do. The stock settings were great on this and the lower TDP benchmarks lined up exactly with other processors from this series. The only thing that you may need to do is adjust the UMA size in the future, but this will only need to be done if a game crashes and tells you it ran out of video memory. github.com/JamesCJ60/Universal-x86-Tuning-Utility github.com/project-sbc/Handheld-Control-Panel
Quick note that anyone that picks this up should ask Beelink for the updated firmware. I had a couple of reboots before it but now it's rock solid. (firmware date 6/13)
I have to wonder how Beelink is getting these out so far ahead of the major laptop companies. Not complaining, I love getting little machines like this with big gaming grunt, but it is annoying that I can't get a sub-notebook with this chip yet.
I feel like now that we have the ROG Ally at 599.99 these kind of devices will be a bit harder for me to buy for just emulation/light gaming. That said for only $180 more you get more iO, the ability to use an EGPU, Double the ram and double the HDD space. These days I can't live without 32GB of ram. That said I'll probably either get the Ally or wait for the Beelink SER those are usually cheaper and go on sale often.
What's that screen? Is it a Switch to which you're somehow streaming the image, or is it a wireless screen in the form factor of a Switch? I'm confused 😅
From what I can see, 7840HS and 7840U are the same chip, but CPU performance is better on this at very high TDP (even when 7840U is at the same TDP). You can almost turn a 7840HS into a 7940 by overclocking the GPU like I did here, but you can't do that for the CPU.
I bought into 7735hs too late, didnt realize the 7480 etc would be released so soon after for only $100 more. As an emulation box, though, it doesnt really make much difference, even up to ps3.
Ah man, every time i am about to dive in, another option arrives giving pause for thought! Upscaled emulation up to ps2, ability to run some Switch titles, but so much choice
I was hanging on for the higher-speed soldered RAM, but all talk of this appears to have disappeared…? The Australian tax year ends in 18 days. Need to make my mind up…
Please do an updated video now the AMD drivers are out and newer bios and Ratchet & Clank because this pc is amazing. I am getting 39 fps average with default on high and some settings very high with 1080p with fsr 2.1 on quality.
So we are finally at the stage that these boxes can run everything under the sun. Until Ps4 emulation kicks off that is. Would be interesting to see this kind of sustained performance in handhelds over the next 6 months or so.
It's pretty amazing. Even 2 years ago, running a small box that can do PS3 emulated, or PS4 PC ports at 1080p, would be incredible. Kinda crazy that in 2023, the Vita is still the best system for playing Vita, though.
The lack of customization means the price is a tad too high imho. In the EU you are encroaching on gaming laptop prices which will perform a lot better. A version with 16GB of Ram and maybe 512GB and no OS would be better as the pricencould be dropped by 200 euros or so paying about 600 euros total.

PCSX2/Dolphin 's TDP usage seems very high, is that because you fixed the gpu clock? Saw a 5800h+RX6400 SFF PC on Taobao for a cheaper price than this new Beelink mini pc while still being relatively small size, wonder if that will give better performance than this.
It's because of the OC. Without taking drivers into consideration and the improvements to RDNA 3, I think 1050ti is reasonable. It should still beat this in some games, but it's close. I hope Ryzen 8000 can surpass a GTX 1060 because that would be nuts.

The IGPU in this chip is severely bandwidth limited. Even if LPDDR5 8500 MT/s was used it would still be pretty bandwidth limited. I wonder if AMD will address this in future top end APUs?
