Sadly, this “last watch you’ll ever need” talk won’t happen with this Citizen, unless someone gifts it to you. To know about this watch, you’ll have to be into watches, and if you are into watches, you’ll never settle. It’s an endless cycle. Don’t get into watches, folks!
I’ve had this watch for 8+ years as my beater or daily driver. Girlfriend got it at Kohl’s. Love it, radio controlled, super accurate. It’s the prefect travel watch for the US and Europe, the darn thing always adjusts time right after I get off a plane. I never even have to touch it. Great for traveling, solid end links, sapphire. Really nice lume too. Super comfortable on the ss bracelet at 42mm, 48mm lug to lug.
The titanium version of this watch is the first watch I ever bought. All the red highlights are blue on that watch, and it has a titanium bracelet. Still one of my favorites
Ironically I got this watch as a gift from my wife two years ago. I wasn't a watch enthusiast then but that's how it started. Now there are over 30 watches in my collection so definitely I wouldn't say you may have only this one and forget about everything else :D
I had a $15 casio for years and never complained. Then my brother got this watch from work as a gift, in the rose gold color, with the brown bezel. Never in my life did I ever desire a gold watch, much less rose gold! But I've worn it for two years now, and I actually really enjoy the watch. Never had an issue with the performance. Went to the Citizen store in Times Square my first week of ownership, and had the perpetual calendar set and bracelet sized, and that's it. There are so many polished surfaces on the dial, it's very easy to see the time even at night, with minimal ambient light, long after the mediocre lume is dead. The hands, indices, etc., are quite beautiful. I didn't realize how good I had it until I started exploring the watch world, and seeing much less refinement being sold for much more. The only issue I've ever had is that the bracelet is difficult to adjust (so I don't), and it does get tight in warm weather. I'm not even sure what I could ever replace it with, because of that rose gold tone of the case. If anyone has a suggestion, I'm open to ideas. And yeah, I've never used the chrono or alarm, because setup is awkward. I'm also never quite sure if the radio signal updates at night (in NYC there is too much radio interference, according to citizen), but the watch is running perfect time with no manual adjustment ever, so it's fine. After month of looking at watches to get my dad, I'm actually starting to consider this same watch, in stainless steel or titanium. It's just a solid, good set-it-and-forget-it watch.
I considered so many high end mechanical watches before buying a Citizen ecodrive very similar to this one because I just can't stand not having perpetual calendar, time not being accurate and worry about battery life. As much as the romance of a mechanical watch is so attractive and I owed a few, it's just not a watch that you set it and no more worries
I love that watch. I own the very similar, limited edition AT4138-05E and could not be happier. Both watches look amazing and, you're right, this is the one watch to buy and never worry about it working or keeping the correct time. I had no problem setting up my watch. It was easy. Great review.
I just bought the CB5918-02L which is the blue one with a matching Alligator leather strap. 😍 I bought a Blue Sailcloth watch strap for it, so I can use it everyday. I only want to use the Alligator strap for nice occasions. It really is a watch that is an all in one. Sadly, like you said, we can't just own 1 watch. I also have the Citizen BL8140-55E. Which has a black dial, so I have the stainless steel band it came with and a black leather strap for it. It's nice having options.
Bought this watch 4 years ago. My first real watch. It is probably the best fitting, most comfortable watch in my collection. The bracelet is perfect, the best bracelet I own. It's a very functional watch too but the dial is too cluttered for my tastes these days. I prefer a vintage omega or a Hamilton khaki, something with simple Arabic numerals. They said, this is the watch that got me into watches
My first watch purchase in titanium. A good alternative to seikos astron line...for a fraction less. A great watch from which i set all my other watches, thanks Rob!
In 2011 I bought the Casio Edifice EQS-500C-1A1ER, very similar to this, cost me £96 back then. I loved it and I was done with watches.. for 6 years. Then I discovered Seiko automatics 😀
i have the AT4010-50E ... similar but with blue accents instead of red, and titanium. Such a great watch ... its was daily beater for 3 years (i.e. when not wearing a gshock or luxury piece). 200M WR, Titanium, Sapphire, Chrono, Radio Time Sych, Multi Time zone, Perpetual! ... in a tasteful and wearable 42mm. Whats no to like! ... and they come up dirt cheap on ebay occasionaly. Its not in the rotaion as much now the higher end pieces get my wrist time ... but for a quick grab and go that can take a licking, or dress up ... its just so great. Only faults I can give it are ... no screw down pushers or crown (although its 200m, that make me nervous), crown could have been signed ... and 24mm band is up there, but bracelet tapers a little .... otherwise its a true quiver of one for most of the sane people out there (clearly im also insane).
I’ve got the titanium version of the watch , £549 here in the UK but got it in a sale for £275 . Absolute great watch but like the last commenter said once your into watches sadly it won’t be my last lol. At the moment also got a Hamilton khaki king mechanical and now looking at that nice G Shock MTG with cherry red dial, thanks Rob 😂😂
Cool. I kinda like that nato on it , it makes the watch look less flashy, more tool-like. On two-piece straps (esp. leathers), this model can seem a bit too "fancy".
I have the same watch but in black casing. I've actually fallen out of love with it. Can't put my finger on why, but to me the watch face itself is too cluttered, and the deep blackness of the watch face surface doesn't allow the features to stand out as much as I would like them too. Also the size and weight to me are a bit off putting. Apart from that, the watch is very much set and forget. Mine was tucked away in my watch box for a year in the wardrobe and only taken out the start of this summer when I put a NATO strap on it. I had to leave it in the Sun for a while and when I came back, off it was going again, correct time and date, so its great for looking after itself. I have a Omega Speedmaster 'Moon watch' which is now my preferred daytime watch but I'm trying my hardest to love my Citizen again. As Random Bob states, shop around if purchasing in the UK. I've noted wide variations on pricing! Research via the internet for best price, and if you're REALLY desperate for one but haven't the cash, a lot of online stores are now offering interest free credit too.
this watch (the rose gold version) was my first ever watch in my collection and I single handedly blame this piece for starting my addiction. I now own 12 watches and counting... lol
Two days ago I saw the very similar one to this one but in titanium for sale at TJ Maxx for $200 and it felt like a dream I played around with it for probably 15 minutes the girl was very patient but yeah I absolutely had no idea how to set it up and it drove me nuts I knew I had to go to a website because we looked at the instructions but I passed on it and bought the basic Chandler eco-drive chronograph in blue and I love it I was able to set it up in five minutes or less. I really wanted to make that titanium work and it had a nice leather strap and the weight of it is amazing it’s like you don’t even know it’s on your wrist and it’s a large watch but yeah I just couldn’t do it in the end
i have one since a decade.. its a metal bracelet tho and its working like first day. keep bumping it in door handles but with the sapphire crystal its like new.
I've got the titanium one and hea it's a great watch. I never thought I'd like it so much. I do hate the 24mm but it's never come off the bracelet yet.
Love the comments that this was one of people's first watches. This watch, hands down is the end all be all watch. I sold the steel in red. After owning luxury pieces I rebought this.
Great watch ! I have a similar one called the Blue Angels LE and I have no idea how to set it up, it has a digital and analog displays. Spot on accuracy though.
I still have that 24mm Colareb Italian blue leather strap if you're keeping that watch and want a leather strap at a good price. Nice watch. If I had not already gotten that MTG G-Shock I'd be very interested in this piece.
I've had lots of Citizen (including eco-drives) and I have never kept them...just something about their design....but I love Monsters and G-shocks so there's no logic to it. I like the look of the Brycen AW1598-70X and may have to pick up one of those to evaluate! I certainly have never gotten the nato strap either- running under giving more thickness, extra strap to mess with/ fold and keepers that are too large.....no thanks.
I've got an AT9010, and really like it. I think it has a 23mm lug width, even though Citizen shows it as 22mm on their site. Wonder if this one is really 24 mm?
I remember the days when I just had one watch that I wore all the time and nothing else...that was a long time ago. Part of me thinks I should just buy my ultimate grail watch and see if I want anything else.
I like how the second hand nails all the the indices and the minute hand visibly moves every 15 seconds. This is the watch us abnormal people can set our mechanical watches to. I sold a similar watch on ebay and the guy wanted to return it as broken but truth is he was just too stupid to figure out how to set it so I had to walk him through it.
As a person living in the Middle East, I can't use the radio feature unfortunately. So, I wish I could set the time in 1-minute increment, but it comes with 15-minute increments only
hey ive had mine for about 5 months now! really accurate and great, just wanted to ask if this was normal, when i check the charge on mine it says its full but some days when i take it out of my drawer to wear the date is always accurate but until the watch face sees light again it is stopped and then after a couple seconds of light goes back to displaying the time. just wondering if this is what the watch does normally to conserve energy? let me know. thanks
Rob, what’s your view comparing this to the Casio MTG that you reviewed last month? That was a bit more expensive, but still... which do you like better?
I'm a big fan of Citizen. I got my wife one for Mothers Day this year - it's solar powered, perpetual calendar, has a world time function for easy switching between time zones, sapphire crystal, and a mother of pearl dial, and you can make micro adjustments to the alignment of all three hands to get it perfectly set up - the second hand PERFECTLY hits every indices all the way around the dial. All for ~$250. Only thing it doesn't have is radio control, which I don't think any ladies watches have other than some G/Baby Shocks. i.imgur.com/WRemIdX.jpg ^^That pic was taken before I figured out how to adjust the hand alignment, you can see in that pic that the minute hand is a little behind where it should be. Your fanboys won't say it, but Rob, that is *freakin' UGLY* unless you're a ten year old boy. It's colored and shiny like a toy. $575.??? Waste of good money
I have this in titanium with a titanium watch compass on a natural brown leather nato Zulu strap for daytime use and a armourlite tritium blacked out dial field watch and a black suunto clipper compass on the same leather nato strap with black hardware

My favorite quartz watch. I've been beating the crap out of one of these for a few years now.
I just bought this one for $487 at a local jeweler. My 20-something-year-old Citizen still works great, but I couldn't resist buying this one😄
