Haha us finns are so particular about the sauna stuff! Still even many finns dream of building one like this. I hope Mike finds a nice ladle to throw some smooth "löyly".
Hopefully over time, with videos like this, this will become a mainstream thing to do. Not everyone will jump on board but humans are diverse and we can never be perfect. You can lead a human to a sauna but you can't force them to try it.😉🤓
I’ve been using a Steam Sauna since Covid & I’m severely immunocompromised & I have not caught Covid. I love it. It relaxes me. Rids me of pain. A real Godsend.
And for those on a tight budget or lacking a yard etc...a few sheets of foil-faced foamboard does the trick. Score lengthwise down center to bend, tape together with metal tape into vertical hexagonal tube, use 120 degree drywall bead for extra strength. Slice off top 2 feet for roof and floor. One edge untaped is the door. Add in a seat and your far infra devices of choice on a switched powerstrip and maybe a nice 250 watt UVb reptile bulb as well and for under $200 or so you are good to go. Plus its portable. Can be done in under 30 minutes too.
Thankyou so much for idea of foam!! I want to be sure not to breath off gassing from foam and wondering about doing "Poor man'sFiberglass " boat/ teardrop camper diy build method as a surface coveringto seal it better.. .another idea, Hexayurt builders website has info on a special superstrong tape
I do a sauna everyday. I use a hydroponic tent, 6 near infrared heat lamps, and created a meditation environment. I have seen my skin getting more collagen and tightening up. Cured my bad knee from a fall I had pain in for years. Helps me sleep. Keeps my brain sharp along with olive oil I eat daily.
I done it's is the best thing I've ever done. Sauna right in your back yard. I woukd def have a plunge pool or a outside shower as it's half the experience
I did it bought wood straight from wood mills if that's how its called. Stove i bought second hand fixed it up built it with no help and its the best thing i ever have done sometimes twice a day one in the morning and in the night i can see the sun coming up from the window and when its fullmoon its there. Amazing.. Do it you will not regret only life once dude
Nice job! One tip for people building one: if you plan to have wooden flooring (and frame), it will eventually rot and has to be replaced so plan the framing accordingly.
Inspirational video, beautiful sauna and setting! I’d invest in a ladle and bucket as was mentioned in other comments. The benefit being that the ladle allows you to portion out water to control the intensity of löyly - half scoop, full scoop, etc. because the effect isn’t instant, knowing what amount of löyly a scoop produces makes for a comfortable sauna experience, in my Finnish opinion :)
I was beginning to think I was the only beginner builder that wears shorts and is barefoot most of the time. :-) I worked on the roof of my chicken coop barefoot and a couple people commented on a social media post I had made on how un-safe it was. But the grip of y feet on a roof is better than tennis shoes I found. Love the build, very inspiring.
Zen an the art of Imperfection, with an emphasis on just doing the work too the best of our ability at that time and moment, knowing our abilities are always evolving. Breathe ! Great project, looking at building a wood fired sauna myself. Be well !
Best we can do is raise the temperature in a small space enough to make us sweat for a certain amount of time by whatever means we can afford.😎 And if it takes time to do this don't stress, health, like learning, is a journey not a destination.
Hello Mike, great intro video to building a sauna, looking forward to the conclusion (2nd video) is it released yet ? Could you send me the link? I looked through many many many videos of yours and haven’t been able to find the follow up video. Best Justin
@@Highintensityhealth Thanks! Also I have been delaying doing the work of a TH-cam channel and enjoyed your talk of your start up etc. Thx for sharing... even with the skillshare affiliate link, your quick story was of service 🙏🏻😁
How do you like your Kuuma stove? I have one on order and it should deliver in another week or so. This looks like a great build, I'm doing a 12x16 with a changing room and trying to save using T111 instead of traditional siding.
That facing timber here is always is put on horizontal with the smallest end facing up onto the board above. This creates a water run off to prevent water ingress.
We probably shouldn’t gloss over the “health authorities” shutting down saunas during a “pandemic” (among other proven health treatments). Do you still really believe those people have your best interest in mind? There should be a sauna in every home, gardens in every backyard… if health is really a concern - why don’t they push for healthy lifestyle? Thank you for the informative video! Hope more people watch and learn!
Few notes from a Finn. The heater in the sauna is called "kiuas" and the steam that the kiuas makes, when you throw the water at it, is called "löyly". 😅
Not trying to be critical, this looks like an awesome built, but you can build a sauna far simpler. Saunas don't need insulation, they don't need moisture barriers; in fact, these things can work against their longevity. Leave airgaps to enable the wood to dry out after use and simply rely on the wood to provide insulation, and your sauna will never rot or develop mould. In Finland and other Nordic countries, saunas are frequently just simple wooden shacks with a slatted floor and a large stove.
I, like so many here have been "thinking" of doing this for a while since my local pool and sauna are still shut 😔😖 I used to go at least 3 times a week & it was a massive stress reliever! I would like a cold plunge as well... I think my version would be a lot more basic/functional...
It's SO funny to see someone put a sauna up where piles of Finns and Estonians used to live. The National Nordic Museum's sauna was hauled offsite from maybe 1-2 miles from this. Glad you started from the bottom -- there will be some discussion from other sauna-builders. We just had a memorial (albeit online) for a MAJOR sauna-builder for decades in the Puget Sound: who, to be sure, built the Finnish Room at the 'old' museum'. I notice you're not talking about code much, and you're not talking about the smoke stack, or siting. To be sure, maybe not so many options on siting, for you. Or a dunk tank, in the absence of a walk to the lake or a stream or river. (Pity!!) Sticking an outdoor shower enclosure near is a fabulous thing, putting a bib for one instead of using a hose is a bit, but if you have to have a permit, why not? Just made the point about venting on a Quora post this past week -- will be looking for your next video drop. AND -- I am NOT telling where I've been taking a public sauna for the last year. Finns are quiet like that....
Thanks for the video, staring my build soon. Wish there was more info out there. Bought Glen's E book even though mine will be a bit different in size and arrangement its been very informative. Any ETA on part 2 showing the interior work?

Wet/Steam “Sow Nah”, dry sauna, Infrared, electric, wood. What is the difference? any links? Looking really good. I wonder, if every Finnish household has one, how they run their ‘s without disturbing the environment then?
9 months late but here is a quick summary. Wet/steam sauna, is when you throw water on the stove to create steam that makes the sauna feel even hotter. A "dry sauna" is just a warm room. As for the infrared (never actually used one so cant say much)they are about 30-60c (86-140F)and there are 3 types: Dry, wet and hybrid. 1. The dry version has no water related to it, its just a warm booth. 2. Wet version (to my knowledge) has a shower (and or Sauna). 3. Hybrid has both IR panels and a stove. Used at the same time, Stove to get the temperature higher and the IR to get its benefits. (never used one so cant tell much about them). As for the electric and Wood stoves. Wood stoves are fueled with wood and gives a much more enjoyable sauna experience, The heat is much "smoother" compared to electric stoves quess its because the humidity is much higher. I prefer wood saunas over electric saunas. Electric sauna gives a lot "sharper" heat atleast at first, but when the humidity goes higher the heat smoothens out a little bit. Electric saunas are getting more and more popular since they are easier to install (e.g. since you dont have to worry about building a chimney) and use, only needs to press a button and wait. Here is a link to wikipedia (not the greatest, but its 4am and im too tired to look for a better one). As for the saunas in Finland, No, not every household has a sauna but there are 3,2 million saunas in Finland and for a population of 5,6million its not too bad. Since alot of the saunas are electric, i dont think they cause that much of a disturbance for the environment (as long its renewable energy). Source: Me, a Finn

Finnish guy here. Funny how this makes sauna look so complicated and its basicly a part of every household in Finland. Even in apartment blocks.
Didn’t mean to overcomplicate it!
