This one. Take Me To Church's video is amazing, but this is my absolute favorite of your songs and of all songs in general ❤ An absolutely beautiful work of art
I know most people relate this song to romantic love but, after watching this video, my mind goes to familial love towards the child. A couple of criminals on the run (that mostly got to that point because of a difficult past) sees a child in a circumstance that will lead to a future that's just as tragic as theirs. Them deciding to give him any amount of happiness for as long and however they can. Finding joy in spite of their past and present situation with an inevitable future closing in. And, despite all of their lost innocence, they still feel hopeful in seeing the boy so happy and finding peace within themselves in realizing that they're still capable of experiencing selfless love. Ultimately, their chivalry is punished and justice is a bittersweet thing, but their love for their family stays intact despite the end of their journey together. Using those last moments with each other to say that they don't regret a second of it, that they were worthy of love, and that their bitter past doesn't get to make them bitter people. Yeah, I legit cried while watching this at 5am.
You don't think this is your take of the lyrics and clip created for said song? I had thought it was their child... Also, how do we know they aren't apd individuals? Your write up .. is sweet/kind I will admit.
@@Emily_Hurley Not their child, although in the beginning we are led to believe they are the parents because of the same mole on the forehead of the child and Hozier's. But in the instrumental it is revealed they just found the child in an abandoned house.
I read somewhere that the song is about his love for a married woman, unavailable but irresistible to him nonetheless. And his feelings of...shame or possibly regret for pursuing her in any way. To be fair I feel like Hozier’s videos are more often than not just a visual artistic expression that accompanies the song, not necessarily directly related to it. For instance, movement’s lyrics seem to me to be about an infatuation with a lover who’s awakened things inside of him he forgot were ever there. Yet the video is Sergei Polulin dancing and chasing different personalities/ versions of himself. Which he also seems to end up pretty scraped up in the end of an endless cycle. Although I can’t deny that I got a very similar feeling from the video you described. Heart wrenching and beautiful. Also very relatable for me personally.
"I slithered here from Eden just to sit outside your door" Those lyrics, this song, this album , Hozier will pass the test of time. In 20 years , someone will be feeling the same thing we are while listening to this song for the first time.
I meant to say. The guy who broke into my house who had 2 left feet....was v Uneloquent .....I responded to another commentary about this ...didn't get the message right
I know this song is an allegory that talks about wanting something and kot being able to have it. But is also a song about all those who are seen as "devils", the ones that always come across as the villains no matter how hard they try to be the hero. Is about felling like you don´t deserve to be loved, at the same time you look at someone who has everything you don´t: the innocence, the beauty, the tenderness. And you fear that if you allow yourself to love them, you´ll ruin all the good in them. But yet, they make you fell like a person again, a human being. At the end, that´s all we are right? Our fears should never stop us from experiencing love in its purest form. Love is redemption.
You must be a poet of some kind! May the inspiration that you give, be a warm blanket that covers you all the way to the end of your life!....then off you go to Paradise!
After watching this a few times, I think that the child in the video isn't theirs. In the beginning it's just the couple and they break into a home to find the child there, probably abandoned and abused. The couple just "adopts" him and they become a family. But the cops catch up to them :( The kid got to experience more happiness while he was with them, than when he was with his real family... even though they're criminals. Edit: There can be so many different stories from this one song. I remember Hozier saying in some interview that he likes that his music is interpreted differently by everyone. I would love to know what everyone else sees when they watch/listen to this song.
I remember being a little kid dreaming of someone rescuing all of us from the filth and violence of our childhood home, it never happened. This is a beautiful but sad little story of one child being loved for a fraction of his life.
The couple broke into a house to steal but to their surprise, they found a child in a worrisome condition. They took the child with them, gave him love and time that he will cherish his entire life. But the couple got caught by the police and the child was separated from them. The kiss at last gave the child hope that he is special, he is loved. The coupe gave the child a reason to live on no matter what.
I remember first hearing this song after my 9th grade English teacher told us in class how she would listen to this song while she battling cancer. One of the things that I vividly remember her telling us. Time flies.
Its sad that i need to look everywhere for good music nowadays, but when i eventually find it, i thank god that there are still people who want to make music that speaks to your soul ^_^
Dylan Briggs You know what man? Im too drunkToo reply to your comment right now so im just gonna say, Im sorry for bringing up god and all that stuff "Your right right" and i love you, Ok dylan? have a nice day ^_^
For many years I hear a lot of music from all genres, every day, I think this is one of the most beautiful songs came out for years. This is a musical quality that will pass the test of time. Even when the hits of the moment will be gone and forgotten.
Moti Ben Shalom a lot of people nowadays don't understand real music and melody, I first heard this at 17 and it was beautiful to my ears. I've tried showing friends but they keep their interests in other genres and generally don't stray very far into this type of music, it's classic. I wish I could make everyone understand real good music, but not with society nowadays, nope.
This kind of music gets appretiation not because of the amount of people that like it, this kind of music does not need quantity. Furthermore, permormers like Hozier don't need or seek such. Music like this gets remembered because it touches your insides and it is irrelevant how much souls it had touched. Quality of music is not measured by quantity of admirers, so don't worry. Good stuff is good no matter what.
Beside the fact that all his songs bring heavy emotions/thoughts, I tend to have the most love towards this song and its accompanying video. Not necessarily my favorite on the album (though it's hard to choose a favorite), I think it to be one of the most well-written songs. Once you get the underlying message of it, it brings out a lot of emotions. I feel so overwhelmed yet so at peace after hearing it. From Eden is a brilliant piece of work. And the music video- it's definitely my favorite. Hozier is so underrated, and his talent is phenomenal. He's so unique and his music is so intelligent... it's hard to find that in music these days. I'll never tire of listening to him.
+Abraham Hernandez Obviously, all his songs are open to interruption so don't strictly believe mine, but this is my opinion. In his Track-By-Track series, he explained it was originally told from the perspective of the devil looking at something small and innocent. This element is used in the music video, and I hear the most of this idea in the song. For a more realistic twist, it could be a person who has done much wrong and compares himself to the devil but cherishes the innocent lover in his life. His lover brings memories of his former self, and this sinful person is now at this innocent lover's mercy. Just my thoughts. :)
THE ACTUAL LYRICS Babe There's something tragic about you Something so magic about you Don't you agree? I wathced this video because I knew Katie McGrath was in it, didn't expect to love the video and the song this much. I only knew Hozier from Take Me To Church, and damn, he's great. Can't help but feel a little disappointed that it isn't an entire movie, that would've been great :) Great song, great video
The guy who "slithers" from Eden is clearly a reference to the serpent in the Garden of Eden, there to tempt this woman, the object of his desire, into sin. There is a reference to the "other man" she will be cheating on. She is more hesitant to engage in this affair, while the guy shares that he once would have felt the same moral reservations, but experience has taken away that idealism/innocence/chivalry. Brilliant song, brilliant lyrics....totally relevant to most of us too!
+Lucie Moon he uses a lot of religious themes and mythology to communicate in his songs which is very cool. it adds another layer to understanding his songs.
+makayla “krazy baby” plaskey in the video the guy and girl are criminals on the run doing robberies to make money. They find an abandoned house to break into but find a neglected child in there so decide to take him with them so he's not left alone. Eventually the police catch up with them and they get arrested.

Right now I am going through the hardest time in my life. June 30 my daughter Eden was born and had surgery at 2 days old, now diagnosed with cystic fibrosis. She is 3 weeks now. I can't tell you how many times I have listened to this song. I know it has a meaning that you intended for it but for me it means so much more especially right now. "Babe, there's something wretched about this Something so precious about this Oh what a sin" Her diagnosis is so horrible , yet she is the sweetest bundle of joy She is so pure and happy and content while I'm over here falling apart I just wanted to share to let you know how powerful this song has been for me through this
My best part : Honey you're familiar, like my mirror years ago Idealism sits in prison, chivalry fell on its sword Innocence died screaming, honey ask me I should know I slithered here from Eden, just to sit outside your door
I don't know who Kate McGrath is but she's certainly lovely. I love this video because I am an adult with a traumatic childhood. And for just a minute this little boy had something real that he will remember for the rest of his life. And while this is not a real-life situation, I can assure these situations do exist and it's moments like these that helped to get us through. That's my take on this video and it is now so very near and dear to my heart . . .
From Heaven: Babe, they say there’s blackness lurking about you, something so malice about you. And I do agree. Babe, there's passion boiling within you, so you’d better hold me around you. And I will not flee. Don’t patronise, no fool’s surprise, no tyranny. No goodnight prayers, no devil’s snares, no time for thee. Darlin’, love’s peculiar, that’s sure something angels know. Shred my halo like a ribbon; wrap my wings inside your coat. Rinse the white light, gleaming; in the closet, shut the door. I flittered here from Heaven just to sip from your dark soul. Babe, if you’re so questionable about this, then why do you dither with darkness? Go follow Him. Babe, there’s nothing about you I won’t kiss. For you, I must stray from the lightness. Oh, what a sin. The darkest land, the highest stand, for you and me. Feathers and thorns, in the sheets downstairs, we forget occasionally. You’d say, “You’re familiar like my mirror years ago. Idealism sits in prison, chivalry fell on his sword. Innocence died screaming, honey, ask me I should know. I slithered here from Eden just to sit outside your door.” Darlin’, love’s peculiar, that’s sure something angels know. Shred my halo like a ribbon; wrap my wings inside your coat. Rinse the white light, gleaming; in the closet, shut the door. You slithered here from Eden and I fell so far to fall.
Never been so crazy for a singer. You're truly a miracle. You're songs are literally more beautiful than any other song I've ever heard. Please drop a new song/album....
I always thought of it as his comparison to feeling like the one who has corrupted a tragic, magical, beauty. She’s in need of a knight in shinning armor, but she gets an equally damaged, self-loathing (maybe a little wicked) romantic who loves her for all her flaws the way she is. He knows she deserves more, but... love.
I grew up with a rough childhood, nowhere this rough but this video touches my heart very deeply. For just a moment in time, this child has "normal". I have strived to give this to my own children and, thankfully, mission accomplished! With the help of some very special people in our lives
Been listening to this song for the past 5 years now. Never gets old. This song always will stay close to my heart. I'm sure I'm gonna still listen to this masterpiece in the years to come. We all will. ❤️
now I know Prime put Take Me To Church on Crowley's playlist, but there's no reason this shouldn't have been on there too. I mean it's literally written from the serpent of Eden's perspective! It's perfect for them! Still makes me cry regardless
We are inffecting Hozier's comment section on every platform. Heck it, we are even at his concerts, someone gave him the book😭 I dont think he gets tired of seeing the edits we make though
I know this song isn't technically a love song but this is what was playing when my ex and I danced under the dim light of our bedroom. I twirled her as she laughed and I was humming the song under my breath. It's a really nice memory when I listen to this.
@@anthonylombardo4829 he looks like the common western depiction of Jesus. But Jesus most likely didnt look like that since he was from the Middle East
I love Hozier and Katie McGrath and this song and this music video. For anyone saying they wish they could see a movie with a similar plotline, I recommend the Japanese film "Shoplifters" that came out in 2018!

I just keep coming back to this song, absolutely amazing. That wait at the beginning, drawing it out and then 'Baaaaabe' at 00:33. Plus the fact that it's a modern song in 5/4, makes it stand out even stronger from the crowd. Can't wait for some new material.
Hey man, new to time signatures and I can't figure out the pre-chorus, seems like a little change maybe? Can you confirm please? I hear a little 4/4 I guess, I thought it was weird like a 3/5 but 4/4 makes more sense lol

The most wonderful person I have ever had be part of my life introduced me to Hozier, this song is so beautiful and it hurts how much it reminds me of her, i feel awful that we no longer talk to each other, I miss her so much. I’m so lame bro, maybe someone reads this and helps me out lol.
Ugh, Hozier can literally do no wrong when it comes to his art. He just has a way of expressing things that kills me with its elegance and perfection. Whomever directed this video has a mind very like that of Hozier, I think, and that's an amazing thing. This video couldn't have been better for this song. Bravo Hozier, you blow me away every single day.
I also read that he directed it himself. So his father was a blues drummer, his mother is a painter and his brother a film producer... Hozier is a singer, songwriter, guitarist and film director now. I wonder how long it will take before he masters drumming and painting as well...
The first girl to ever break my heart I was 22 years old about to finish college. This was our song. We were soulfully connected. Shit happened and she left me, but this song will always be in my heart. Nothing could ruin this song.
Nine years since this was uploaded, and only now am I actually watching and listening to it with full attention. I am in tears.. THE SONG... THEY _FOUND THE CHILD_ and HE BECAME THEIRS. FUCCCKKKK-- _MY EMOTIONS. MMY EMMOTIONS_
How did l not stop at the brilliant take me to church to discover more gems like this🫢 I’m diving in now, poetry voice music and visuals everything is beautiful 🙌🥰
It normally doesn't work when singers act in their own music videos, but by gosh, Hozier you were grand! Oh and this song's been one of my faves for the last 6 months, so poetic!
Not sure how accurate this is, but what I took from both the original song and this video was the concept of sin. The song seems to depict the serpent/Devil in an almost sympathetic light. Although the serpent planned on killing Adam, Hozier suggests it was out of his love for Eve, and the serpent seems to know this isn't necessarily right ("Honey, you're familiar like my mirror years ago" - he loves her for her good qualities, something he, a fallen angel, hasn't seen in himself for years). His sin, though morally wrong, came out of a place of love. This video, at least how I took it the first time watching, seems to echo that same point. Though the couple was knowingly doing wrong, their love for the child was obvious. At the end of the day, his well-being and protection was their priority; their sins came from a place of love. Maybe I'm way off, but regardless, this is one hell of a song and a great video to accompany it.
I think that's a really cool interpretation, and any artist would be honored to have their worked analyzed to this degree. Even if its wrong its am awesome thought... Not sure if ill be able to listen to this the same after reading it.
I think you're close, but I think the kid is supposed to be the devil in the video. The evil guitar solo ends when they find him, and his eye has no pupil at the end. He, I believe, is the one that called the cops, to get rid of Adam (Hozier, in this case) so that he could be with the girl.
I think that's a pretty good interpretation. I agree with some things and I think a truly good music video is open to interpretation and means something a little different for everybody. In my interpretation, I think that the child is the reflection of Hozier in his youth and innocence and that the line "idealism sits in prison" is represented by Hozier being arrested and that the idealism of being a musical artist who is rising in fame can also be somewhat limiting since you are SO busy ALL of the time. I believe that the child is an embodiment of himself years ago, and that the woman is also a representation of his mirror in a different way. The innocent child ends up with the human connection, and the artist ends up in a sort of prison. I almost think the blue gum may represent something like youth and innocence since it is so prominent in the shots, and note that Hozier is smoking a cigarette and is the only one not chewing gum. There is also a focus on the child being handed money (a $100 bill?) and that money is something that can take away from innocence. I think that the serpent in the song represents temptation and that it sits outside the door of humanity, but is removed from it nonetheless.
Hozier can lift us up from the pop-fangirl grave we've dug ourselves into and maybe get artists to start to be poetic with music. :D Thumbs up for you, Hozier!
I've been a fan of the song for a while now, and this video suits it beautifully. You have a way of making things relate without making it obvious. You make us think and that's something we all need more of in this world. Well done.
This song for me is about being so crazy for someone, all logic goes out the window. It’s about taking whatever tiny part of them they’re willing to give you and cherishing it with your entire being. It’s about seeing the cracks and the trauma and the imperfections someone has and worshiping them anyway. It’s about being broken down to less than any person should be able to love and still giving it to them, praying they’ll accept the shattered being you’ve become. It’s about hope in the face of hopelessness.

I know this song is an allegory that talks about wanting something and kot being able to have it. Is about felling like you don´t deserve to be loved, at the same time you look at someone who has everything you don´t: the innocence, the beauty, the tenderness. Very well said. 💖
This has been my favorite interpretation so far 😭😭😭

After watching this a few times, I think that the child in the video isn't theirs. In the beginning it's just the couple and they break into a home to find the child there, probably abandoned and abused. The couple just "adopts" him and they become a family. But the cops catch up to them :( The kid got to experience more happiness while he was with them, than when he was with his real family... even though they're criminals.
Edit: There can be so many different stories from this one song. I remember Hozier saying in some interview that he likes that his music is interpreted differently by everyone. I would love to know what everyone else sees when they watch/listen to this song.
you had to watch it a few times to realize that the child wasn't theirs?

I was curious from where all of this "soul music" comes from, today found out that hes Irish,...of course.
Can you recommend me some Irish artists? Lately I've been discovering your music and loving it!

Is that a true story?

"There's something so tragic about you, something so magic about you..." That describes Morgana pretty well, actually.

For many years I hear a lot of music from all genres, every day, I think this is one of the most beautiful songs came out for years. This is a musical quality that will pass the test of time. Even when the hits of the moment will be gone and forgotten.
it won't though.
As a male, I encvountered a lot of people, male and female that love songs like this. They love sensitive songs, Im in Georgia.
Hozier didn't actually steal from that shop. He just walked ina nd they were like "OMG it's Hozier! Here, take our money, we insist!"

I'll never tire of listening to him.
what else do you expect from an irish man?? ;) :P
I really love this song but it's hard for me to understand the meaning of it. Could you help explain a little. .?
+Stevie Waters I honestly couldn't agree more. He's an amazing artist! Very unique, which is what I like about him
thats we miss from like 99% of songs now-a-days
+Abraham Hernandez Obviously, all his songs are open to interruption so don't strictly believe mine, but this is my opinion. In his Track-By-Track series, he explained it was originally told from the perspective of the devil looking at something small and innocent. This element is used in the music video, and I hear the most of this idea in the song. For a more realistic twist, it could be a person who has done much wrong and compares himself to the devil but cherishes the innocent lover in his life. His lover brings memories of his former self, and this sinful person is now at this innocent lover's mercy. Just my thoughts. :)

Can't help but feel a little disappointed that it isn't an entire movie, that would've been great :) Great song, great video
please tell me that in the three years since this comment youve listened to hozier some more?
The guy who "slithers" from Eden is clearly a reference to the serpent in the Garden of Eden, there to tempt this woman, the object of his desire, into sin. There is a reference to the "other man" she will be cheating on. She is more hesitant to engage in this affair, while the guy shares that he once would have felt the same moral reservations, but experience has taken away that idealism/innocence/chivalry. Brilliant song, brilliant lyrics....totally relevant to most of us too!
+Lucie Moon Did you see this on SongMeanings? :)
+Lucie Moon he uses a lot of religious themes and mythology to communicate in his songs which is very cool. it adds another layer to understanding his songs.
I like your comment and I just really want to know how the kid and police fit in. if anyone had an idea please help.
+makayla “krazy baby” plaskey in the video the guy and girl are criminals on the run doing robberies to make money. lovely. you are the reason I come here to watch this video everyday.
"Babe, there's something wretched about this

I don't know who Kate McGrath is but she's certainly lovely. I love this video because I am an adult with a traumatic childhood. And for just a minute this little boy had something real that he will remember for the rest of his life. And while this is not a real-life situation, I can assure these situations do exist and it's moments like these that helped to get us through. That's my take on this video and it is now so very near and dear to my heart . . .
Katie McGrath is an Irish actress, best known for being on Merlin, as Lady Morgana Pendragon, and Supergirl, as Lena Luthor.
From Heaven:
Babe, they say there’s blackness lurking about you,
something so malice about you.
And I do agree.
Babe, there's passion boiling within you,
so you’d better hold me around you.
Babe, if you’re so questionable about this,
then why do you dither with darkness?
Go follow Him.
Babe, there’s nothing about you I won’t kiss.
For you, I must stray from the lightness.
Oh, what a sin.
The darkest land, the highest stand, for you and me.
Feathers and thorns, in the sheets downstairs, we forget occasionally.
You’d say, “You’re familiar like my mirror years ago.
Idealism sits in prison, chivalry fell on his sword.
Innocence died screaming, honey, ask me I should know.
I slithered here from Eden just to sit outside your door.”
Darlin’, love’s peculiar, that’s sure something angels know.
Shred my halo like a ribbon; wrap my wings inside your coat.
Rinse the white light, gleaming; in the closet, shut the door.
You slithered here from Eden and I fell so far to fall.

I always thought of it as his comparison to feeling like the one who has corrupted a tragic, magical, beauty. She’s in need of a knight in shinning armor, but she gets an equally damaged, self-loathing (maybe a little wicked) romantic who loves her for all her flaws the way she is.
He knows she deserves more, but... love.
because it should be pretty obvious... that's not some deep/subtle reading.

I read that HE directed it, so you have a good eye!
He's a genius, I tell ya!
I also read that he directed it himself. So his father was a blues drummer, his mother is a painter and his brother a film producer... Hozier is a singer, songwriter, guitarist and film director now. I wonder how long it will take before he masters drumming and painting as well...

Oh and this song's been one of my faves for the last 6 months, so poetic!
Hozier doesn't just write songs, he writes stories in form of songs!
This was my fave song years ago and specially cause Katie is here 🤎 Hozier is just art
Wow this is like me looking at a orange comparing it to a fighter jet it makes no sense
Connor Murphy I hadn't thought of that the first time around, that makes perfect sense to me! What a great song/video.
Thumbs up for that comment girl! Truth be told.
Thank you!
Glad he can open the eyes of many people that just resort to the garbage that's on the radio
Yes. Just yes
Okay but now imagine Crowly singing this to Aziraphale 🥲
Help so we are all broken and came here?
@@SatanosFr it seems so
My hubby and I are 75, and we love your music…and you! Good stuff!❤
Oh thank goodness, another "in our seventies" Hozier lover.
I've been a fan of the song for a while now, and this video suits it beautifully. You have a way of making things relate without making it obvious. You make us think and that's something we all need more of in this world. Well done.
Nice!
Hi
I liked Hozier... This song made me officially love him. Literally just now.
Hozier=Irish Jesus
Yus

Totally
worshipped!
Lol
This song for me is about being so crazy for someone, all logic goes out the window. It’s about taking whatever tiny part of them they’re willing to give you and cherishing it with your entire being. It’s about seeing the cracks and the trauma and the imperfections someone has and worshiping them anyway. It’s about being broken down to less than any person should be able to love and still giving it to them, praying they’ll accept the shattered being you’ve become. It’s about hope in the face of hopelessness.
This is pretty great. We're so happy to see Hozier doing well! :)
Skeeter Wallen that's THE Mahogany sessions to you
