Okay, so in the beginning he eats a burnt marshmallow but his teeth are already dirty from the previous ones. Since setting yourself on fire means being in love (in this video), roasting a marshmallow over that fire and enjoying it means that you enjoy watching someone agonizing in love for you. So basically it means that he approves of only this kind of love, a huge one that makes a fire of him. He made others to burn for him, that's why his teeth are dirty, and he wants to feel it too. So when she tries to light him up, she's not serious, she's just flirting. He doesn't react and that makes her irritated. Also she gets hurt in the process (almost lights herself up - he smiles at that, she's already in his net) so it's risky for her, she might fall too. And the half-circle turn, when the camera moves at 1:08 means that she's halfway through to being in love. (It correlates with the same moment at 2:14 but that time that will be a full circle - completely in love). She tries to capture his attention in other ways, like climbing over that table, but that doesn't help her. He's still waiting for her to give up. She's not going to flirt and just leave him, she has to fall for him for real. Her body betrays her every time she tries to leave. The servants are the symbol of his will and they bring her back on her Seat at the table (name of this movie by the way) until she's ready. I'm not sure what they tell her at 2:46, it's either "you're in love now you've gone full circle" lol or "you can leave now", because at first she doesn't believ, but then she either gets scared or glad that she can finally leave - no one's stopping her now, and she tries to escape but she understands that she can't (because she really doesn't want to leave him). And then she gets serious, he finally sees that and burns, she enjoys that (by eating a marshmallow), but it doesn't last for long. She's not going to move on from this and do this to other men (like we know he did to other women many times before), she won't be a player because these feeling immediately become reciprocated, she falls for him. And everything goes according to his plan, he gets the love he's been waiting for, when both of you are in love without playing around

If I had a nickel for every time i’ve seen Anya Taylor Joy playing a girl not acting as expected at a dinner full of fancy people and trying to escape the crazy host, just to end up the film with a human s’more, I'd have two nickels. Which isn't a lot, but it's weird that it happened twice

I just feel like no one is talking about how good Hozier's acting is on this. Yes Anya-Taylor Joy is incredible. And I guess people are acknowledging his acting by saying that Evil Hozier is giving them nightmares. But he is so subtle and startlingly intense in this. For someone who does not have acting as a profession he is really good.
He's said himself that the new album is a tongue-in-cheek view at the End of the World. That being said, I see where you're coming from, and everyone can(and will) get varied meanings from any work of art
There was a livestream done by Hozier for this album a while back, and in it he basically says Dinner & Diatribes is his crack at the feeling of being in social situations that you really, really don't want to be in. So like, for example, dinner parties (where it's primarily driven by small talk.) or meeting acquaintances, etc. Personally, I think he does a phenomenal job of encapsulating the feeling. I've been in conversations where all I'm waiting for is the end of it.. and would do anything to bring that end faster. Like, for example, setting it/them on fire. I don't like small talk, and would do literally ANYTHING to remove it from my life so I feel this song, haha. But I definitely see Hades/Persephone vibes too.
Dude, every social situation is uncomfortable to me since I always say something I'll regret later. It doesn't have to be even something bad or embarrassing, but my mind tells me it is. Also I seriously can't with people, I am seriously better on my own, doing my thing.
The music video adds a lot to the song lyrics-Social obligations are difficult to maneuver when you’re insanely attracted to someone yet feel required to stay where you are simply because others are around. I think the idea of the flame represents something taboo that they both share, an intimate moment among a table full of people that they desperately want to have. They desperately want to leave and be alone together, but feel tied down by this pressure.
I think the girl can't leave because it would be running away from the problems in a relationship. We also see her reaching to someone behind hozier and that doesn't work either. Diatribes means confronting: so no side ways to the relationships, she needs to face the problems head on, and it does backfire. The girl has problems too, if it came to it, she will burn too(as fire is the cleansing of the problems in the video) but we don't see the problems since we are watching from her perspective.
Ah, I remember when I first saw this clip of my beloved Hozier and thought "don't know who that young girl is but damn there is some acting power there" and lo and behold few years later she took the acting world by storm. Good on you, good on you young queen. Can't wait to see what more you have to offer. Hozier, Anya... the kind of artists we deserve.
Fun fact: the director, Anthony Byrne, is Hozier's brother and also the director of Peaky Blinders season 5 (and 6), and the actress in this video, Anya Taylor-Joy, plays Gina Gray in Peaky Blinders. It's a small world.
I think a lot of people are missing the meaning of Diatribes here... It's a bitter verbal attack towards something or someone... Watching this and taking that into consideration my interpretation of this song is two lovers who fall in love with each other through intellectual sparring. Sometimes using others to do their bidding, both try not to show how impressed they are with each attempt but finding themselves combusting with attraction. At times becoming offended and literally attacking and when not getting the reaction they want they flirt or attempt physically seducing the other with looks or actions. Obviously, one is more experienced than the other. Ah, the appeal of manipulation, darkness, grotesque and the unseemly, toxicity defined.
I think you're on to something but I don't think the video and the lyrics are inherently connected. the video is open to far more interpretation than the lyrics themselves. the lyrics tell a tale of an obligatory stuffy meeting with his lover's friends which he does NOT want to go to. at some point she sends him a mischievous look and his mind starts running wild about what she's planning for after this hell of a dinner. the video is much more antagonistic than the song itself almost like the dinner itself and not the fantasy he's imagining. I think people are falling into a pit assuming because he's in his own music video that his character must be the perspective of the lyrics, when Ann's character is the only one actually singing the song. my interpretation is she's trying to get a reaction out of him to no avail, eventually she gets frustrated and tries to leave, but due to the social obligations she really can't. more attempts to either get a reaction or to escape are met with a bitter reminder of the social situation she's in. she's stuck and her date keeps smiling like he's in control cause he's around his friends. eventually she does get him to react, he's in flames with either lust or anger, maybe both. after relishing in her success, his friends throw a match to her.
notice how the butler's keep propping her up right when she gets out of line. and when she gets to the door she tries the handles, she looks back at a crowd of judgemental faces and begrudgingly sits back down. the social implications are the only thing keeping her down, or keeping her from escaping.

So he initially wants to make her his umpteenth conquest. She tries to escape in all ways but is inexplicably attracted to him. She starts playing his same game, and he ends up burned (so metaphorically in love with her for real). She thinks she has screwed him but in the end she realizes that she has also fallen in love and, automatically, screwed herself in turn. So it's my love life in a video.
best comment. still i find this video too disturbing. all i see is her being abused. until the end. read a couple comments about persephone. sure, but that's no reason to make a video like this. perhaps i should watch it again, but ... no thanks. did i miss something? i'm fine with an artist playing a nasty character - this video doesn't make me conclude hozier is vile. but i don't get it.
People interpret the video differently as being stuck in an abusive relationship, home etc, but for me its her fight inside her own psyche with the shadow self, the predator, who just sits and watches her from the other side of the table. From the first moment it seems as if she woke up; gained consciousness - recognized his presence in her psyche. She goes through a roller-coaster of emotions, tries to burn him, tries to escape, even tries to sedate him, but nothing seems to work as he is not moving but the servants around try to fight her on his behalf. He says no words. And eventually she burns him thinking it will affect him whereas in fact the “servants” burn her as well as a sign that these two concepts are inseparable, he is her, he is inside her mind field, and she cannot escape him without being erased herself. And the servant’s role as in the lyrics as well is too insult her, put her in a place, try to put her down - diatribes. And the whole dinner takes place in her mind with all the characters representing different aspects of her psyche. Live laugh love Hozier
This was also directed by Anthony Byrne, the director of Peaky Blinders season 5 (& 6, yet to come out too), where Anya first came into the series. I'm guessing the connection was made through there, probably?
There needs to be a behind the scenes video of this clip. And I think this image of Hozier is one of the very few things that I will not be able to erase from my mind, lol.
who knows why he felt the need of changing in such 360 degree way his image. He has something self-deprecating, he seems to like that (like Irish rye smile...)
The video starts with hozier eating a toasted marshmallow (as we find out later it could have possibly been toasted on a burning person, perhaps a previous lover) When the girl comes in, she looks scared, she knows he has the upper hand in their relationship. Probably because he is more conniving and experienced. But the determined look on her face when she’s flicking the matches may indicate that she’s up for the challenge and wants to try and shift the power dynamic. He smiles, watches her fail, knowing her attempts are futile. She keeps flicking the matches and ends up burning her own hand. That’s when she gets up and tries to leave but she’s unable to. She gives in to him, lets him control her- maybe a part of her even likes it. When she finally gains control, she sets him on fire and he’s pleased- she’s learned well. He’s proud of her. She thinks she’s won, toasts a marshmallow on her ex lovers burning form only for her smugness to be cut short when she realises she’s about to burn too. This perhaps implies that he’s changed her, the very fibre of her being- made her ruthless. But this isn’t good for her, it’s unhealthy and she’s unable to maintain future relationships
At the end of the video, Hozier’s character is just vibing while he’s straight-up on fire because this is exactly the “kind of love [he’s] been dreaming of,” even if it’s destructive. Just like in the song, Hozier’s character is passively fantasizing about this woman he pines for, daring and inviting her to do unspeakable things with him. Anya’s character, however, is more conflicted about her desires. In the song, Hozier entreats a woman to take a more, *ahem,* active role. Maybe Anya’s character feels apprehensive or out of her depth. I don’t think it’s about abuse as much as toxicity.
Hozier always seems to flip the narrative around in his music videos. Cherry wine is sung from the perspective of an abused man and acted from that of an abused woman. Same thing here, the woman appears to hate the dinner and the man seems to be pure evil. I'm in love with this!
@Reyna Arawan I believe you're absolutely right, however at the end she didn't seem to lose her power, instead she appears to have caught on fire as well. Lighting up his fire lit her up as well?
@@musefodder The Diatribe part of the title refers to him talking sarcasticly and critically about the pompous-nous of Social Gatherings. In the song Would That I he refers to his past loves as Trees or Wood that he lights on fire as they engage in passion ( Chorus ) and they both are consumed by this fire and love it. I think he visually illustrates that metaphore in this video. Thats why she lights him on fire and he just sits there smiling, finally satisfied. Thats when he gets what he has been wanting all night....to burn in her fire.
I'm watching this 5 years later and it's ✨️amazing✨️ in every way. I thought this was a recent video not an old one. She's a stunning actress and Hozier is an astonishing singer. Well done both of them.
This gives me Hades and Phersephone vibes but in a more abusive way. Persephone tries to flee from the underworld but Hades wouldn't let her because he is obsessed with her beauty. Eventually she gains her freedom by setting Hades on fire and "killing" him with the help of Hecate (the girl who gives her the matches), but as she is close to her way out, Thanatos (the servant) , finds what happened to Hades, catches her, and also sets her on fire as an act of ravange(i like to think Thanatos waas in love with Hades in this scenario) never letting her see the upperworld ever again.
She actually never gains her freedom completely. When Hades captivated persephon the god helios(sun) saw it. Goddess Demetra was missing her daughter adn she start searching for her, by being transformed to an old woman. God helios was sad of her sorrow and dispair and he divulge to her where persephone is. This time, Demetra was in a place, still transformed, with a royal family that was really kind to her. For rewarding the family for their kindness, she would put on fire every night the Prince named Demophon ,because that would make him immortal. But his mother saw her and was alarmed. Demetra revealed herself to them and she demanded to build her a temple and she lived there. The Goddess asked for help, from the other gods of olympus, to release her daughter, and she said that if zeus will not help her she will not let the earth blossom anymore.(she was the goddess of agriculture). Zeus was terrified from her threat and send hermes to the underworld to take persephone. However hades knew that if persephone would eat food while being on the underworld would be connected with it, and she wouldn't leave so easy. So, he gave her a pomegranate and she ate 6 seeds of it. Eventually, due to her action, zeus decided to release her but only for six months every year(spring and summer) and the rest six months (autumn and winter) to go back to the underworld with hades , which symbolises the bad weather, the withering of the flowers and trees etc. cause her mother Demetra feels sad not being with her daughter.
Ever since I saw The Menu, I've thought of this music video. There are certain paralelles between Margot and this woman trapped in a hellish, seemingly neverending dinner, but in the end, Erin/Margot makes it out, and we don't know if she ever does here... and somehow, either way, the ending fits. It's hopeless whether she gets out or not. She's already tasted the food.
A side to everyone breaking down the music video ( and doing a great job at it) but I also notice.... that at the very beginning when he eats the marshmallow, he teeth are rotten and full of cavities. Hinting that he has been doing this to many of woman before her. His teeth have become pure rotten from all the sweet people he “consumed”
Hozier is one of the best writers/ singers of our time, our era and religious movement will be framed for future generations to assess and discuss. i’m amazed to be born in the same time as this.

Idk if this is right, but basically here's what I took from this video: It starts with him eating a marshmallow, his teeth are black, presumably from eating a lot of them, hes watching her like a creep obviously, and she starts throwing matches to get rid of him. This obviously doesn't work, and he develops more control over her, making her dance provocatively for him, and she's afraid. The waitstaff is helping him, by pulling her back and making her move whenever she stops or tries to get away, the guests just watch her torment, apathetic. Then the waiters at her sides start whispering to her and she tries to run again, it fails, and now a guest is offering her more matches, this time when she throws it, it lights. She roasts a marshmallow on his burning body. Then, the waiter throws a match at her, we don't see it light, so I'm assuming it didn't, which means she's now in his place. She took pleasure (the marshmallow) in his pain (the fire) and became like him, so now the others are trying to destroy her aswell so they can be free too. Idk if any of this is right, it's just my take on it lol
Horny hoizer corrupted the innocent and now she is him I don't think the staff are trying to kill her to be free I think that was just symbolism to hammer home that she has become him, she is in his place
I love how he invites trouble with lyrics like "let there be hotel complains and grievances raised in this kind of love. let there be damage ensed and tabloid news in this kind of love" bc most most songs describe love like a calming force and while I agree, I think trouble is inevitable. and I like the idea of being with someone who will face these troubles, not bc he have to but bc he WANTS to. bc he will delight in facing it bc it means we're together.
@@mishi144 I know there's so much glorifying of toxic relationships and the relationship in the video is certainly toxic but the lyrics are different. I don't think it's toxic, just difficult
@@shymaasalem1961 Idk, I'm in a good relationship, I truly love my partner and I believe my partner does too, but it's actually a very peaceful relationship. Peaceful doesn't mean boring. But there's no trouble and it's actually very enjoyable. I hope it lasts for a very long time, because it's cozy, gentle, caring and loving. We're not playing games with each other. It's easy. I would have agreed when I was younger that trouble was an inherent part of a relationship but it's most likely because I was not in a good place myself and my partners were not either and we did hurt each other in some ways so there was trouble. Nowadays the only "trouble" I have is finding ways to make my partner happy and see them smile.

Now, everytime I watch the video, your comment comes to my mind and I can't stop watching the video ah

Persephone walked into the underworld of her own volition and wouldn't leave. So, not really, lol.
Persephone went with Hades willingly.
did anyone notice how the whole album is about power in different ways?
Hozier has mentioned that there is a power dynamic at play during sex. In the video, first he's in charge, then she is.
I mean Hades and Persephone had a remarkably healthy relationship :\

The music video adds a lot to the song lyrics-Social obligations are difficult to maneuver when you’re insanely attracted to someone yet feel required to stay where you are simply because others are around.
I think the idea of the flame represents something taboo that they both share, an intimate moment among a table full of people that they desperately want to have. They desperately want to leave and be alone together, but feel tied down by this pressure.
I love this interpretation so much!!!
look up the definition of diatribes tho
I think the girl can't leave because it would be running away from the problems in a relationship. We also see her reaching to someone behind hozier and that doesn't work either. Diatribes means confronting: so no side ways to the relationships, she needs to face the problems head on, and it does backfire. The girl has problems too, if it came to it, she will burn too(as fire is the cleansing of the problems in the video) but we don't see the problems since we are watching from her perspective.
And he’s on fire. It really be like that sometimes huh

Fun fact: the director, Anthony Byrne, is Hozier's brother and also the director of Peaky Blinders season 5 (and 6), and the actress in this video, Anya Taylor-Joy, plays Gina Gray in Peaky Blinders. It's a small world.
He does have a brother, but Anthony isn't the one. Fun last name coincidence though, for sure.

when we played this as the last song at our wedding the DJs surprised us with this version!
it really does
Yess
Yea sure It's all mood
My thoughts exactly!

Live laugh love Hozier

who knows why he felt the need of changing in such 360 degree way his image. He has something self-deprecating, he seems to like that (like Irish rye smile...)
My wishes came true :p
The video starts with hozier eating a toasted marshmallow (as we find out later it could have possibly been toasted on a burning person, perhaps a previous lover)
When the girl comes in, she looks scared, she knows he has the upper hand in their relationship.

But a hot version
This video is so freaky but Hozier’s all like “hey, look I look evil but I’m still burning hot”
So hot to the point he actually burns
This kinda freakiness is exactly what I'm into.
I Agree
He’s definitely not into abuse because Cherry Wine is so outspoken. He’s more likely into the very consensual bdsm dynamics.

Hozier always seems to flip the narrative around in his music videos. Cherry wine is sung from the perspective of an abused man and acted from that of an abused woman. Same thing here, the woman appears to hate the dinner and the man seems to be pure evil. I'm in love with this!
Sam Sh yeah ! Right ?! That's what I thought too ! In the video the woman is the one who hated the dinner .
@Reyna Arawan I believe you're absolutely right, however at the end she didn't seem to lose her power, instead she appears to have caught on fire as well. Lighting up his fire lit her up as well?
@Reyna Arawan Since the song title is "diatribes" I don't think it's lighting his fire so much as roasting him that she was interested in...
🖤
You're a literal vibe
is this her trying to escape the underworld?
Actually Persephone was never captured she herself decided to stay
She became the very thing she was trying to escape.

Finally found someone who thinks alike
Good point! I didn’t connect that before!

Scarcely can speak for my thinking
What you'd do to me tonight
Now that the evening is slowing
Now that the end's in sight
Honey, it's easier knowing what you'd do to me tonight
You didn't include the last lines, you dumb bitch
I don't remember this episode on Queen's Gambit.
I guess he was a 'tinder' date
Duuuuuuudeeeeeee 😂😂😂😂😂😂
What a match
omg, you are both so right. it was a match on tinder xDDD
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
poor anya
still to this day the best music video to ever exist
I liked it before I could even watch it. That's love.
Same. ❤👍
Well its Hozier. So it can't be bad!
Me 2
the kinda love you've been dreaming of?
@@jojo-ll3tt I see what you did there!
Clicked because i love anya. And also hozier.
His look was on fire throughout, couldn't take my eyes off. Such playful yet dangerous smirks had me. This god is insanely divine, eccentric in all its forms. What can't he do? That's the question.
Watching Hannibal edits and listening to this song is not the way i thought i would be spending my entire morning (someone stop me pls)
Lyrics:
Honey, this club here is stuck up
Dinner and diatribes
I knew it from the first look of
The look of mischief in your eyes
Your friends are a fate that befell me
Head is the talking type
I'd suffer Hell if you'd tell me
What you'd do to me tonight
Tell me
Tell me
Tell me, ah
That's the kind of love
I've been dreaming of
That's the kind of love
I've been dreaming of
Honey, I laugh when it sinks in
A pillar I am of pride
Scarcely can speak for my thinking
What you'd do to me tonight
Now that the evening is slowing
Now that the end's in sight
Honey, it's easier knowing
What you'd do to me tonight
Tell me
Tell me
Tell me you're mad
That's the kind of love
I've been dreaming of
That's the kind of love
I've been dreaming of
That's the kind of love
That's the kind of love
That's the kind of love
That’s the kind of love
Oh, oh
Let there be hotels complaints and grievances raised
In that kind of love
(That's the kind of love)
(That's the kind of love)
(That's the kind of love)
Oh, oh
Let there be damage ensued and tabloid news
In that kind of love
(That's the kind of love)
(That's the kind of love)
(That's the kind of love)
That's the kind of love
I've been dreaming of, ah
Oh
And that's the kind of love
I've been dreaming of
(That's the kind of love)
(That's the kind of love)
(That's the kind of love)
(That's the kind of love)
And that's the kind of love
I've been dreaming of
(That's the kind of love)
(That's the kind of love)
(That's the kind of love)
They're both really good at portraying a nasty kind of lust. A kind of love you don't wanna be dreaming off.
Idk if this is right, but basically here's what I took from this video:
It starts with him eating a marshmallow, his teeth are black, presumably from eating a lot of them, hes watching her like a creep obviously, and she starts throwing matches to get rid of him.
@@nerdlingeeksly5192 yeee probably lol
This was a lovely summary 👏
@@moonlace1560 thank you!!
I dont think she became like him. She just took control
the acting in this video is crazy good. The guy that lights her on fire in the end. The expression on his face is amazing.
Why am I attracted to evil Hozier
Ikr... Same here.
I guess I'm just really attracted to any possible persona Hozier can have or represent... That man is literally on fire
I'm supposed to be gay
The stare down is so chilling i love it
We all are
@@whoisaelis Masochistic?
I love how he invites trouble with lyrics like "let there be hotel complains and grievances raised in this kind of love. let there be damage ensed and tabloid news in this kind of love" bc most most songs describe love like a calming force and while I agree, I think trouble is inevitable. and I like the idea of being with someone who will face these troubles, not bc he have to but bc he WANTS to. bc he will delight in facing it bc it means we're together.
Ahhh the line ' face trouble not bcs he have bcs he WANTS to'
Blah to idealizing a toxic relationship and convincing yourself it's something it's not.
Yeah also it's a song we're allowed to have art that isn't the most morally right lol
Evil daddy Hozier and Anya are something of my bi fantasies
My queer self is shaking too
Ok
Damn dude you didn't need to call me out on a hozier video I was already being called out.
Same sis😩
Ifkr
Excellent creative mind behind this video
Aroused and terrified at the same time. Oh Hozier, the wonders never cease
The opening chords are literally the best sound in the whole world
Agree, Many people overlooked the opening chords
I was today years old when i realized that the man with mustache is actually Hozier himself lol. I always thought he was some actor but wtf? He is so talented and the way he looks at her (camera) is so intense. Literally "i'm totally straight, but sometimes gay for Hozier"
This storyline is pure art.
