Lyrics:
Babe, there's something tragic about you
Something so magic about you
Don't you agree
Babe, there's something lonesome about you
Something so wholesome about you
Get closer to me...
No tired sigh, no rolling eyes, no irony
No 'who cares', no vacant stare, no time for me
Chorus:
Honey you're familiar
Like my mirror years ago
Idealism sits in prison,
Chivalry fell on his sword
Innocence died screaming,
Honey, ask me, I should know
I slithered here from Eden
Just to sit outside your door.
Babe, there's something wretched about this,
Something so precious about this,
Where to begin?
Babe, there's something broken about this,
But I might be hoping about this,
Oh what a sin.
To the strand, a picnic planned for you and me
A rope in hand, for your other man
To hang from a tree
Chorus:
Honey you're familiar
Like my mirror years ago
Idealism sits in prison,
Chivalry fell on his sword
Innocence died screaming,
Honey, ask me, I should know
I slithered here from Eden
Just to hide outside your door
Man, Hozier really milked that drunken conversation with Crowley!
All jokes aside, I think this song is absolutely marvelous. The lyrics, the melody, the vibe... it has such a sadness to it, and yet it also has a certain lightness - like when you find solace in giving up hope... I don’t know if you know what I mean...
anyways, this song will always occupy a special place in my heart, it’ll never not be gold
"Honey you're familiar like my mirror years ago." Chills. What a brilliant lyricist he is. His songs are incredible.

This song doesn't make me feel sad, just, like, heavy. Like I'm really here and not just an abstract thought. It's grounding, but also ethereal and it really helps me.
Yes. I understand. The first few notes stir a deeeeep pain inside of my, but by the time the chorus comes in so powerfully, like a wave of water on the ocean it just smoooooths the sand it mixes with. I remember listening to this when it came out, and I had just decided I wanted a divorce from my husband. Life should have been chaotic, but certain tracks like this one just crammed their way into my skull, reverberating, forevermore, moving me along like water and sand. Grounding and ephemeral all at once.
cringe.
Ethereal yet grounded. Like a fallen angel, one might say
Heehee

My favorite thing about Hozier's music is how interpretative it is. So many say this song is sad, and I can see that, but when I first and continue to hear it, to me its about someone who falls in love with someone unconventional tbat is going through a rough time, likely something the singer has experienced in the past. Yet, the singer loves the person so much that they are willing to leave the easygoing-ness of their current life to be there for this person and be with them.
You hit the nail on the head when you said "interpretative" - I was surprised to see people think this song is sad and your interpretation hadn't occurred to me, either. To me it sounds like the singer escaped from a toxic situation (the lowest-hanging fruit being some sort of repressive religious community, which is rather a theme for Hozier), and has since found freedom and validation in being and doing the things that community looked down on regardless of imposed morality. He's acting as the tempter waiting for the listener to realize they're trapped in the same or similar situation and to help them be a happier, less inhibited version of themself.
...Not to say that the singer's way is inherently better. He's jealous and possessive ("a rope in hand / for your other man / to hang from a tree") and at least metaphorically violent ("innocence died screaming / honey, ask me, I should know"). But he certainly doesn't feel guilty about it.
I couldn't agree more. I see this song as a sweet song as he said I slithered from Eden just to sit outside of your door. There's really something about the girl that he couldn't think of the good things and doesn't care abt it just to be with his love.
@@selda748 exactly, and they'd do all kinds of things just to be with one another.
I thought it was the desperate-longing-happy feeling of being in love. Wanting and doing so much just to be around the person and yet in the end doing only just that. Probably because that's how I love. Dedicating everything to that one person but never really telling them it was all for them. Just hoping I've put enough love in whatever it was that they'll be able to recognize.
Same with me, i started listen Hozier when i got depression, but, when i become to listen more and more musics from him, i became to see that his musics are about love
Hozier and Good Omens is like the perfect combination that'll make me want to cry because of how beautiful and fitting it looks.

Well said
Not only are his lyrics great, but his guitar work is almost always intoxicating. I could listen to the music alone and be perfectly happy. Great artist.
Hozier is one immensely gifted artist. From both a musical and lyrical point of view his sound is the most original to have been discovered in at least a decade . His success is down to pure talent and long may it last.
John Conway I wouldn't say the MOST original, but he is unique, and possesses great songwriting ability.

I feel like ireland literally produce the best song writers you could ever imagine..for such a small country and such a small population they sure have massive talent, no one can touch them.
Love, storytelling is part of the Irish DNA. From the Olde Celtic Bards who had to dedicate years to learn the craft of reciting poems and stories of the Clan, there are centuries of practice in place when it comes to writing and telling stories. From playwrights to poets to musicians Ireland produces loads for a small nation.
could you please enlighten me on some of the best Irish artists?? cause the comment above u seems to agree with you!!!
The script, Kodaline, The coronas.. there are so many. these however including Hozier are my favourite that i know of.

@@nlieu42 10/8 (1,2,3 - 1,2,3 - 1,2 - 1,2) i guess :))
is the line “a rope in hand for your other man to hang from a tree” racist? whats the meaning if no?
@@yourheartinminedrumming i think its more like a double suicide idk
@@yourheartinminedrumming It's not racist or referring to suicide. The song is from the perspective of Lucifer/the serpent in the Garden of Eden talking to Eve. He wants Eve for himself. The "other man" he's referring to is Adam, saying he wants Adam to be dead and out of the picture so they can be together.
It's also a reference to the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil, since by eating from the tree, Adam (and Eve) doomed humanity to sin, and consequently death. So in a sense, the tree did lead to their death, symbolically "hanging" from the tree (also like the fruit that they ate.) There's a lot of symbolism at play.
Gosh this just triggered memories of watching Good Omens Season 2 with a friend. Were in tears and yes, we are still coping
this deserves more recognition.
Ikr?
Yes because 25 Million people (VEVO Video) haven't gave recognition to "From Eden"
+Ayyy Lmao It's *given, not "gave". And if you understand the meaning of the word "more", then you accept that it means "a greater or further extent, amount or measure" - therefore, a number higher than however many views it has, is what is deserved, was the point of his comment. You're welcome.
Also your sarcasm was wasted there, as well as poorly applied.
@@turboking95 r/iamverysmart cool it buddy, he is making a good point

someone took notes on crowleys drunk ramblings
I don't know why, but this song reminds me of a road trip!
It Does! The Idea Behind The Music Video Is Genius!!
OKAY here’s my hot take on how I like to think of this song: Satan (the serpent) falling in love with Eve, in the first verse it seems innocent and lovely but then in the second verse it starts to reveal itself as being more on the evil side. And like he could be saying “honey you’re familiar like my mirror years ago” like he reminds her of how he used to be this brilliant angel before he fell. Just something fun to think about 😊
Exactly!
Riley Elizabeth im OBSESSED with this analysis oh my god. and how eve is seen as evil, and he sees that part of himself in her 🥺 but he still worships her 🥺🥺
Same idea brother
@Michael Davis he actually said in an interview that it's about the devil longing for something he can't have ^^

all of his songs make me imagine something like my future, people, moving, dancing. it brings me to a whole other world, it awesome. it kinda freaks people out when I listen to him cause im somewhere else when I do lol.
Hunter Russell I second that.
ngl the intro “BABY there’s something TRAGIC about you” IS the best beginning to a song possibly ever
If you watch the video, it's a little more clear.
He loves her innocence; she has another man but he intends to steal her from him.
He's bad (the only thing that 'slithered' in Eden was the devil), and is saying that there are no good people left anymore anyway.
This song really hits home for me.
Thank you
Yes! I know Hozier and I have different religious beliefs but I love how biblical this song. For me it exposes how Satan is behind so much of what is the world embraces. Our temptations.... etc.
It's 2018.. In the era of EDMs, Hip-hop, rap and all, here I am still listening to this almost 5 year old song on repeat.
Hozier is really an artist. No other artist has been so expressive in the past decade.
His Meaningful lyrics, overwhelming music and above all, soul touching voice are really artistic and exceptional.
His songs will always be one of the best in the playlists.
Cheers to his music !!✌️✌️
Give this man ALL the grammys.
I have his whole album on CD, so everytime I'm in my car late I like to listen to his songs, it's so amazing to just drive ant night and listen this, really, that gives me such a good vibes, like summertime, and a little bit of sadness, but also happiness at the same time. Like, melancholy, that I love. Amazing songs. He's just so talented!
I discovered this song on a random winter afternoon...the melancholy of lyrics the music that balances them just perfect leaving you with a smile everytime you hear it.
You go too fast for me, Crowley...

oooooooof.
This was quite possibly the most heartbreaking sentence in the whole series and there is no question about it
F
@@iomoon1155 I mean true, but I can't believe no one talks about how at the end of episode 1 Crowley is just like "no I know how you smell" to Aziraphale and like... he's trying so hard to contain the 6000 years of pining and failing
When I first listened to this song it filled me with such an immense sadness, and I don't know why. I kept playing it and now it's the opposite. I love this song.

This song is much better than Take Me to Church. Someone alert the radio stations.
matter of opinion but I prefer Take me to Church
Matthew John Pace Take Me to Church is a horrible song. It's hard to understand why anyone likes it. No lead guitar. No bass. No drums. Vocals are droning. Lyrics aren't that clever. It's just a dumb, poorly written song. I was pleasantly surprised to hear From Eden because I thought every song Hozier plays sucks based on the one song the radio plays.
IMO take me to the church has a dark, deep meaning and it's my favourite song right now. But I respect your opinion.
Matthew John Pace I've played guitar for 20 years and I can play more than a dozen instruments. I taught music lessons for a decade. The only things I find redeeming in this song are Hozier's disenchantment with church and infatuation with a woman.
I am also part Irish, fwiw. Part of the reason why I'm sick of it is because Alt 98.7 FM and KROQ 106.7 FM have overplayed it. They haven't played even one of his other songs, even though songs like From Eden are newer.
It takes a lot to impress me musically. In other words, if there are only vocals at the expense of the other instruments (that I now know they have), they better be off the chart and still I like a full band of instruments to keep me interested.
You don't like any songs without guitar? What?
With the possibility of Lucifer loving Eve because she looked like Lilith...This makes me cry. This song is my light.
Out of all the songs in 5/4 signature , this one sounds so good and stable❤
5/4 is hard to get right imo
This song makes me so incredibly happy :)
its about robbery ....but okie
+Jonathan Alvarez it's not really
+Jonathan Alvarez I assumed it was about stealing a girl's heart (from another man)
SandyTheMaster yeah pretty much. It's about a man that has done bad things in his life and meets a girl who is innocent and pure "like his mirror years ago" and he wishes to be with her but she is in a relationship with another man. Though you can percieve the song however you wish, that's the beauty of music.
[Yes]
From Eden and lover boy were written for Aziraphale and Crowely
thats a lotta BS cause this songs so good it probably made those characters

I like to imagine that Good Old-fashioned Lover Boy was written for Book Crowley while From Eden was written for TV Crowley.

Im so obsessed with this song. Its just so attractive in some way. The lyrics, melody and everything are all amazing plus i loved the video but theres just something about this song that is so...? I dont know. Perfect?
Joyce Shang exactly!
It's been some years now since the divorce. I still bear an incredible sense of pain and this song conjures that in such a profound way. I had this album playing continuous on my drives to and from work, Hozier my bard before and during the most troubling, disruptive parts of my life--my love leaving me, forcing me to leave, the love I had for her usurped by woe and misery. Now when I hear this sweet song it fills me with that nostalgic feeling, a sort of sweet pain for something that was before, that thing that is lost and will never be again. I listen to this song and wonder if there will ever be another that is fair, another darling of my affections. A part of me supposes it will simply never be so.
Man his music never ceases to make me want to slip into a warm bubble bath with a glass of sweet wine and low lit candles.
