@@SuperSonic-zz8dx Western anti-China MSM like CNN or BBC don't want China's digital Renminbi to take flight. They might churn out propaganda like claiming how the communist party is monitoring your digital RMB transactions or something to that effect. But the Chinese bank has already laid down 3 mandates about building a digital currency, one of which is that digital currency has to have some version of anonymity or privacy built into the currency.

the issuance of the digital yuan fits in perfectly and seamlessly with china's belt and road initiative. once all the partner countries in BRI sign up and are equipped with the necessary infrastructure - the digital yuan will really take off
From Australia I am some what reluctant to get behind a digital currency due to the nature of our government, our banks and the level of corruption. What works well in China can look very ugly if rolled out in other nations as it is not in favour of the people but in favour of huge corporations, elite families and super wealthy.
As a Chinese citizen who lived in North America for 5 years, I agree. The elites in China and western countries are different fundamentally. I don’t think western public will ever trust their government as much as we do here in China. And rightfully so.
Good point. I am not sure if this puts you a little bit at ease because digital currency will eliminate commercial banks. Citizens will have an account directly with the Central bank. With a few legislations, this may mean better democratic control of the economic structure. BTW, right now, the entire monetary system is completely non-democratic at most places
Not so good news for the west. What this will do in the longer term is free a lot of countries (especially in the developing world) from the stranglehold of the western banking system which has been weaponised. Which is a way out from western the corruption you mention.

In China, you can walk into a shop, take something, and walk out without paying or swiping. The transaction happens automagically behind the scene. China is living in the future.
The advantage of China's digital Yuan is that short term visitors to China get to enjoy the convenience of using WeChat Pay/Alipay, all without the requirement of setting up a Chinese bank account first. Hopefully it will draw more international tourists to China and allow them to enjoy the convenience of mobile payment in China.

Very easy to understand, put it this way, if you go shopping online or in the shop using a credit card you do not need to get a charge from the bank fee of 2 %, the business that sells you the good also do not get charged transaction fee, if you have to buy good from oversea, you do not need to convert the different currency into US dollar, this is stopping the American bank from making a lot of profit from doing nothing by charging a fee on a card transaction, and currency exchange,
@@muyy1 imagine, just imagine, in not far future, when you go online shopping, every product has two price tags, one in USD and one in CBDC, and the latter is always 5% cheaper than the former. And everything you sell or your service CAN choose to be paid in either USD or CBDC, then you really don't need currency exchange for every transaction. You probably need to exchange USD to CBDC occasionally just to balance your accounts, but these exchange will be way cheaper than your do for every transaction.

The standardization is what developing your system earlier will provide. This I believe is what the USA is concerned about WRT digital Yuan, coupled with the loss of control through a SWIFT like process. China don't have ambition to change the world, their development is for in the interest of the people. Whether the rest of the world would adopt digital currency system, it is up to each economy’s choice. Digital Yuan is efficient, environmental friendly, hygiene, productive, and numerous merits for consumers and businesses.
Its a good time for the world to have a common currency. the Chinese digital currency can be used as the world currency. SWIFT etc. has had its day. The Chinese digital currency is transparent, its fast, and its digitally linked to everything.
China's digital Renminbi allows short-term visitors to China to enjoy the convenience of WeChat/Alipay, all without the requirement of setting up a Chinese bank account. So hopefully it will draw more international tourists to China.

This topic can potentially evolve into the epi center of the next geopolitical storm. In my business trip to Xiamen few years ago, I was not able to unlock (rent) a bicycle at a beach even though I had cash because my mobile phone was not setup for Alipay. With digital currency, it will be more convenient in my next trip to China.
@@liu3gz I could be wrong. In the old way, one needs to open an account in one of banks in China to use WeChat or Alipay on a mobile phone platform. But with new digital RMB, one may buy tokens to be stored digitally in a card (similar to a debit card?) which can be used for payments. We should know more of digital RMB by the time of 2022 Winter Olympic. China should not expect foreigners to open accounts in China to use CBDC, otherwise that would be too cumbersome.

Just one news I read that there is a Chinese online platform which sell electronic components, they did first cross border CBDC transaction during some kinds of Expo in Hainan province few weeks ago, don't know any details but it looks like they are working on it.
@@liu3gz In the vlog at timestamps 33:30 and 34:36, Cyrus posted two questions which Richard might have addressed to your question. Payment transfers through devices (mobile phone or card) do not require internet access. This implies no access to a bank account. The digital RMB in a mobile phone or a card purchased can be used to scan QR codes for payments.
I think the question of whether the digital RMB will replace the USD is quite understated. Countries involved in the BRI will hold lots of digital RMB for trading with China. Since the infrastructure for the digital RMB would have already been built, these countries would also use the digital RMB to trade among themselves instead of reinventing the wheel. After all, the main purpose of money is to facilitate trade, it doesn't matter what medium is used, especially with a currency far more stable and less fickle than the USD. As China's trade with countries increase, and they will, the digital RMB reserves in these countries will also grow, eventually eclipsing the USD. China says the purpose of the digital RMB is not to replace the USD and the reserve currency, but that doesn't mean it wouldn't.

What works well in China can look very ugly if rolled out in other nations as it is not in favour of the people but in favour of huge corporations, elite families and super wealthy.

The elites in China and western countries are different fundamentally. I don’t think western public will ever trust their government as much as we do here in China. And rightfully so.
Good point. I am not sure if this puts you a little bit at ease because digital currency will eliminate commercial banks. Citizens will have an account directly with the Central bank. With a few legislations, this may mean better democratic control of the economic structure. BTW, right now, the entire monetary system is completely non-democratic at most places

@@muyy1 imagine, just imagine, in not far future, when you go online shopping, every product has two price tags, one in USD and one in CBDC, and the latter is always 5% cheaper than the former. And everything you sell or your service CAN choose to be paid in either USD or CBDC, then you really don't need currency exchange for every transaction. You probably need to exchange USD to CBDC occasionally just to balance your accounts, but these exchange will be way cheaper than your do for every transaction.

If China does not impose taxation on the account then it would be a shock for western system.
The standardization is what developing your system earlier will provide. This I believe is what the USA is concerned about WRT digital Yuan, coupled with the loss of control through a SWIFT like process.
Also Cyrus, Richard was a great presenter on the subject I've yet to hear a better breakdown of what this currency will do and the implications of it!

Its a good time for the world to have a common currency. the Chinese digital currency can be used as the world currency. SWIFT etc. has had its day. The Chinese digital currency is transparent, its fast, and its digitally linked to everything.

Thanks for the very illuminating insight you and Richard brought to this channel. I'm led to this post by your recent update on Carribean case related to this to showcase the global implications. This topic can potentially evolve into the epi center of the next geopolitical storm. Intelligent insights like this will be very valuable for the public to avoid being blown around like weightless leaves in that storm.
In my business trip to Xiamen few years ago, I was not able to unlock (rent) a bicycle at a beach even though I had cash because my mobile phone was not setup for Alipay. With digital currency, it will be more convenient in my next trip to China.
I still have questions regarding foreigner using this, how are you supposed to open an account or you don't really need an account?

I could be wrong. In the old way, one needs to open an account in one of banks in China to use WeChat or Alipay on a mobile phone platform. But with new digital RMB, one may buy tokens to be stored digitally in a card (similar to a debit card?) which can be used for payments. We should know more of digital RMB by the time of 2022 Winter Olympic. China should not expect foreigners to open accounts in China to use CBDC, otherwise that would be too cumbersome.

Just one news I read that there is a Chinese online platform which sell electronic components, they did first cross border CBDC transaction during some kinds of Expo in Hainan province few weeks ago, don't know any details but it looks like they are working on it.

Payment transfers through devices (mobile phone or card) do not require internet access. This implies no access to a bank account. The digital RMB in a mobile phone or a card purchased can be used to scan QR codes for payments.

I think the question of whether the digital RMB will replace the USD is quite understated. Countries involved in the BRI will hold lots of digital RMB for trading with China. Since the infrastructure for the digital RMB would have already been built, these countries would also use the digital RMB to trade among themselves instead of reinventing the wheel. After all, the main purpose of money is to facilitate trade, it doesn't matter what medium is used, especially with a currency far more stable and less fickle than the USD. As China's trade with countries increase, and they will, the digital RMB reserves in these countries will also grow, eventually eclipsing the USD. China says the purpose of the digital RMB is not to replace the USD and the reserve currency, but that doesn't mean it wouldn't.

Great interview and excellent explanation by Richard. It makes a lot of sense - cut fees and reduce time taken to transfer money. I use digital wallets currently but can see the cbdc advantage of not needing an internet connection. It is the future! and I am on board.
