    Excellent talk Cyrus and Shaun. As a Hong Kong local who have spent years living in the West (and now back in Hong Kong), it bothers me how so much of the main stream media is biased with their anti-China narrative, and how many of the local HK kids/protestors are so blinkered and bought into all that. This talk is very balanced, and simply reflective of the reality of what is happening in HK. Shaun rightly pointed out the work by Pompeo and Hawley adding fuel to the fire, as well as the many failings of the HK government.
    But to me, the worst culprits are the adults in HK who deliberately encouraged the kids and pushed them onto the streets, using them as foot soldiers to cause chaos. The youth in HK are victims - young impressionable kids being fed a false narrative, being told that they are fighting for a just cause, and worth the sacrifice. Many young lives and families are ruined, with jail sentences and lost opportunities. There was a popular saying during the height of the violence in 2019: "no cutting off" (not be the best translation, but basically saying that every part of the movement must stick together, including the rioters and arsonists). Those purporting to support peaceful protests - from "pro-democracy" legislators, to university professors, to certain parts of the press, to tools like Joshua Wong - were actively supporting violence and with their eyes wide open, pushing the kids to the front lines. We had one high profile legislator telling the kids in a rally that your life can be more exciting with a criminal record. Destroying young lives for their own political gains.
    It was inevitable that the Chinese government will clamp down hard on Hong Kong, especially with many of these legislators flying to Washington DC to meet with the likes of Pompeo, Hawley, Cruz, Rubio, etc etc to ask them to sanction Hong Kong and interfere in HK and China affairs. Not other country would stand for that, period.

    When one talk about "Democracy" in Hong Kong, one MUST talk about the ultimate hypocrisy of the British and its last Governor Patten. Patten ruled over Hong Kong as a Governor appointed by the Queen of England. What part of that is "Elected by the People" in a democratic process? A story about democracy:
    A farmer asked his son before he died, "Pigs complain about poor feed, cows complain about heavy work, and chickens complain about dirty nests. What should you do?". The son said: "Change to good feed, buy more cows, clean up Chicken coop." The farmer shook his head and said. "No, don't do anything. Let them vote, let them choose you or your wife to take care of them, and let them think they are the boss”.
    Son’s idea = Chinese democracy
    Father’s idea = American liberal democracy

    A lot of Hong Kongers still have that “superiority complex” and tend to look down on their so-called “uncouth” Mainland counterparts. The reality is that HK’s golden era is over and that many cities in China are now more economically advanced. Yes China will top the US in number of billionaires this year. Beijing surpassed NYC last year. But money is only one thing China aim for among many. China’s Five Year Plans include achievements in education, welfare, medical, digital tech, quantum computer, A.I, 5G cities, green tech, next-gen nuclear power, passenger jets, space, EV, defence, BRI, world trade and digital RMB. These are every day news headlines on CCTV. The Chinese government gives a lot of attention to HK but most of its people are kind of dumbfounded about protests and stuff. Look at the list of things that occupy their lives, things that really matter to country, people and humanity. If anyone or company would come up with plans and inventions to save the world from global warming, you can bet he or she or it will come somewhere from China.

    The entire HK protest felt overwhelmingly disingenuous and I thought I perhaps had some deep rooted bias to sympathize for China. However as time went by, it became increasingly clear that the driving motivator behind the protests (or riots) was never clear nor were the rioters focused on real tangible change. Instead, I saw a lot of discrimination towards mainland Chinese people and irrational hate towards authority. That was quite disheartening to see as I enjoyed my visit to HK a couple years back. Joshua Wong was once caught checking-in with his girl friend into Ritz-Carlton which was charging at least US$500/night. They have stayed their for 22 hours while his counterpart, so-called democratic fighters, were fighting for freedoms on the other side of Hong Kong.
    Similarly, he and his girl friend were caught walking their dogs at the Victoria Peak while his counterpart having protest down the hill.
    He paid multi-million US dollars cash to buy a luxurious apartment at the western coast of Hong Kong.
    All these happened when he has never officially employed. BTW, he is famous in crowd-fundings. He has successfully gathered a few millions of US dollars but have spent them all without letting his supporters know when and how.

Second is the bias of the western media towards China and then Hong Kong. They only showed and reported police marching and chasing the rioters but not the rioters burning down shops digging up street pathment as weapons. It's because of capitalism that caused Hong Kong's land prices to skyrocket beyond the reach of many young Hong Kong couples seeking to settle down. The rich Hong Kong property tycoons control the supply of land, so they jack up prices until it becomes unaffordable to ordinary Hong Kong couples. The Hong Kong government closes one eye, because Hong Kong government doesn't collect revenue from taxing businesses (Hong Kong is a tax haven for capitalistic) so the government earn revenue by taxing land sales instead, so they want property sales to be huge in order to tax more.

    Some people in Hong Kong (but not all) are still suffering from the _"colonial mentality"_ imposed by colonizers on the minds of the colonized. Even though Britain has physically decolonized from Hong Kong, the _"decolonization of the mind"_ still needs to happen in Hong Kong.

    • @YuuSHiiiN
      @YuuSHiiiN 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The HK people from the Colonial period really could've learned a thing or two from the IRA. As much as people here are gonna condemn the use of violence, etc. I believe it's acceptable when your people are legitimately being trampled on and the British are not just gonna give up their privileges in the name of "morality", "freedom" or whatever other "feel good" rhetoric that gets spouted for PR purposes. The Irish were also colonized like the people of HK, but they actually had the balls to fight back and retain a sense of pride in their traditional Celtic/Gaelic culture, language and mythology.

    • @Shenzhou.
      @Shenzhou. 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@YuuSHiiiN It's true that former colonies that actually fought for their own independence are far less likely to suffer from the subservient _"colonial mentality"_ that's a product of colonialism. But former British colonies like India were actually granted their independence (or in Hong Kong's case, return to mainland China in 1997) and thus they retain the colonial mentality, since they never had to fight for it.

    • @hyc1266

      @@YuuSHiiiN Hk people didn't need to fight the british like the Irish prior to 1997 because HK people knew China will get HK back after 99 years or in 1997. The problem is that the British has brainwashed HK people to think they are superior to those Chinese from mainland China and that China gov't is evil for more than at least 50 years. The british gov't has continued to brainwash HK people even after it had returned HK to China and trying to cause in-stabilization within China via HK, with support from the US gov't.

    • @YuuSHiiiN
      @YuuSHiiiN 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@hyc1266 Actually no. There was no guarantee that HK would be back in China's hands. Only the New territories on the mainland bordering present day Shenzhen were leased to the Brits for 99 years. Hong Kong Island itself was ceded in perpetuity (meaning no intended return date) but since it was developed in conjunction with the new territories into what we consider as the Hong Kong entity, it didn't make sense to only return the land portion and keep the island as a separate colony. Furthermore, Margaret Thatcher was pretty notorious for trying to hold onto the notions of empire, British prestige, etc. and tried to actively find loopholes to hold onto Hong Kong after the 99 year lease was up. Unfortunately, Deng Xiaoping was having none of it, the two went back and forth for a while and Deng even threatened to invade Hong Kong militarily so eventually they came to the compromise that saw what became of Hong Kong. The Brits never genuinely wanted to relinquish Hong Kong, Margaret Thatcher is already pretty self-explanatory and Chris Patton even reminisces about the "good days" of British Hong Kong and can't keep his boomer ego in check. So no, the local Hong Kong Chinese were never guaranteed to get their reunification with the mainland, and you saw how many started emigrating in waves to western countries via the old BNO passport cause they didn't want to be ruled by "the commies". I still stsndby my point. The Irish had more balls to get their own land back by themselves from the Brits despite being taken over for 250 years longer than Hong Kong. They still held onto their own traditional Gaelic names, and customs meanwhile you see so many Hong Kong Chinese using English names over their native Cantonese names, trying to imitate British customs over their own and thinking they're so much better than other Chinese because they've been "Anglicized".

    • @Shenzhou.
      @Shenzhou. 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@hyc1266 I personally think that when a colony is forced to fight for their independence (i.e the Irish, Singapore, even USA) from their colonial masters, they will learn to treasure their hard-won independence, and the process of fighting helps *decolonize* the people's minds. But if independence was just given to them (like in India, or Hong Kong's return to China) by the colonizers without a fight, then the people *retain* their colonial mentality, since there was no actual fighting involved.
      I hope my meaning comes across: it seems fighting for independence helps shake off the colonial mentality, whereas just simply being granted independence without a fight, retains the colonial mentality among the colonized people.

    Good video yet again. As a Hong Kong Chinese I mostly agreed with what was said. One of the major issues is the education system. Growing up in Hong Kong as a child we were being taught with Western ideology and told to disassociate ourselves with the mainland Chinese because they are communists and all communists are bad. This notion has actually gotten worse after the handover in 1997. Chinese history became a non compulsory subject and value of individual human right is the most important thing in life. This is a stark contrast to the traditional Chinese way of thinking which the greater good of the society is more important than each individual. The British government who is the master of playing politics, realised that by controlling the education as well as the media, will create chaos. These measures were put in place for the last 30 years or more and were responsible for the making of this generation of youth. Just look at what the Brits had done when handing back their colonies all over the world and you will see a similar pattern.
    BTW, some people claimed that Joshua Wong is not Chinese but of is a descendent of Vietnamese boat people so that's why he is so "anti-communist"

      You speak of oppressing of minorities? You must be referring to Hundred Millions of Native Indians massacred and their land stolen? Their image being used as mascots for sports teams?
      Millions of Africans taken from their homes in Africa, and taken to the Americas? Enslaved for 400 years and when freed, endured Jim Crow laws for 100 years? And even today the Republicans are taking away their right to vote.
      Or the America, that discriminated against the Chinese and enacted the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882, which was not repealed until 1942? And your grandparents and parents not being allowed to live outside of San Francisco Chinatown until the mid 1950’s. And at that time was university educated, was not able to find a job?
      Or maybe you chose to ignore the fact that Asian Americans are being attacked randomly all over the United States just because they are Asian. And that you can’t even walk about Chinatown or Oakland Chinatown without being attacked and robbed? To be victims of home invasions?
      Or the US Department of Justice, using the ‘China Initiative’ to go after innocent Chinese American professors and Scientists, charge them with spying or violation of trade secrets, ruining their profession reputation, then having the charges overthrown or withdrawn. Several in past few years., the Wen Ho Lee case being the most infamous.
      That’s what you call oppression of minorities. Not the USA disinformation campaign against China started by Trump and continued by Biden. Funny that it’s only the White USA led countries that condemn China on Xinjiang bit none of the 51 Muslim countries. Many of which are in Beijing today to observe the Beijing Winter Olympics.

    As someone who has lived in HK for almost 30 years and used to cross the border into Shenzhen (for a few years, on a weekly basis) and other major cities in China since the mid-90s, I’d have to say Shaun Rein’s perspective of the special concessions and benefits Beijing extended to HKers and HK entrepreneurs pre- and post-2000 is pretty spot on. To the extent that over a period of time, HKers owned as many as 70,000 factories and workshops of various sizes across Guangdong province. And yet, even today, some of my HK friends flippantly and casually malign the Beijing government for what are essentially dysfunction in HK that are entirely the fault of HKers themselves. This is not to say that all HKers are like that but the prejudice is definitely there and quite deep-seated, especially among the working class and salaried class who had not benefited directly from business ventures in those early years in China.

    Hong Kongers always were bigots towards Chinese who did not speak "Hong Kong Chinese". As an overseas-born Chinese raised speaking Chinese of our parents (who escaped the Japanese invasion of China) I was told rudely to stand outside their store and IF I thought I had the funds, to tell the salesman what I wanted and handed over the money then I could come in. My reply was swift and very pointed in English when I told him what to do with his goods - he realised he had lost a sale which attracted the attention of his colleagues and his boss.

    Agree with Shaun on people born in Hong Kong have a perception that they are superior to people born in the mainland. Social perception changes over time. The problem is that after the return of Hong Kong to China. A period of 50 years was given for the transition for fully integration. This was not managed properly in Hong Kong. It is inter generational. Hong Kong have lost the mind and soul for those born after the handover. There was no education of the young to instil patriotism and nationalism. Hong Kong got a big job ahead to correct this shortcoming and join the Greater Bay Development of Guangdong.

    @koumeue3998 2 ปีที่แล้ว +23

    Great observations!
    Human right and pro democracy activists during Hong Kong riots repeatedly refused to condemn rioters violence when they were asked by local media.
    Why? They vowed not to cut ties with the radicals and openly admitted that condemning violence from rioters would alienate their voters for local election.
    Almost every protest organiser, including Joshua wong, just happened to announce publicly that they would run for local election ...
    So despite the hospitalisation of unarmed innocents every week for 5 months, western media chose NOT to report rioters' violence because that would severely undermine their narrative.
    I live hong kong and I was so disappointed with the ridiculous bias in western media.
    It was as if only pro democracy protestors deserved to have free speech and human rights, because 70+ victims who exercised free speech by opposing vandalism were hospitalised by the masked mob for months.
    Then for 4 months rioters officially demanded that any of their comrades arrested for vandalism or violence should be released unconditionally. I.e the rule of law shouldn't apply to them because they are above the law.
    When the selective reporting from western media like CNN (now lost 90% viewers ) or BBC ( faced funding freeze and backlash for being biased) are only willing to highlight human rights or free speech issues based on identity politics, they basically were destroying any progress of democracy because they were advocating rule of law were no longer important.
    So western media that had whitewashed rioters' violent crimes on purpose were advocating the rule of law, being foundation of democracy, should be weakened greatly because the end justifies the means.
    Does the west understand the hypocrisy of rioters' violence ?
    Fighting for free speech by silencing others with violence because 99.9% were able to get away with riots ?
    12000 masked rioters were arrested and only 800 went jailed, when 30-100 out of 1000+ rioters were arrested at the site of riots.
    Any minor contradictions from witnesses like the police or lack of video of their action meant many were released because apparently dressing up like rioters with helmet, protective gear, mask etc with huge umbrella on a sunny day, who were arrested at the streets of riots did not provide enough evidence beyond reasonable doubt that they had rioted.
    No wonder 99.9% were able to get away with rioting, including one who was able to get away with murder because all of them were masked
    what better ways to promote Chinese patriotism when freedom fighters, in the name of civil liberty, free speech, and human rights promoted anarchy ?

      If Rein were a US official or a senator with huge popularity and following, then condemning China might allow him to pass laws that would sanction China for violation on human rights, even if there were pure fabrication.
      I mean facts are increasingly irdrelevant when America could invade Iraq illegally based on lies of WMDs.
      People like Joshua Wong are supposed to be the representative for the protest, so if he condemns the violence, then some might be influenced as many students saw him as an aspiration.
      If Rein condemned the chinese government for past actions, do you REALLY think it would change the Chinsse government behaviour? Would the top 10 richest Americans condemning China have ANY impacts on China 's governance unless they could mobilise and manipulate the opinions of majority of Americans?
      There is a world of difference between what should happen and what would happen.
      sadly idealists often overestimate their influence and think the world somehow revolves around their opinions.

      US biggest company is to make WMD while Chinese biggest is building clean energy, rail and high speed train and bridges. One is death and distraction while the other one is to improve human living. Totally on the opposite end of society. As a citizen of the world, I can not see how they can find mutual ground.

      Mr. Shaun Rein, you condemn Joshua Wong & Hong Kong protesters for violence and bigotry
      you condemn the students on the street with nothing but bare hands, umbrella, metal bar, or fire...
      you condemn the "rioters" are racist, you condemn teenagers who want democracy in Hong Kong
      you condemn colonialism or the British roots, you condemn the Western media for biased reporting
      you condemn former US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, condemn Australian PM Scott Morrison
      You even condemn the role of Evangelical Christian on the backstage as a Chinese hater. However,
      You have NO guts to condemn Chinese government with tanks & machine-guns on Tiananmen square!
      You have NO guts to condemn the country where TH-cam, Google, Wikipedia and many are banned!
      Shame on You!!! How much did China pay you!? Cannot even afford a decent haircut?

      Disunited States of America has no choice. It is not because they chose a war path. They are too reliance on the MIC aka Military Industrial Complex who controlled every facet of their government so much so that they are not only not choosing but they will slide into Civil War 2.0 and death, mayhem and chaos before the decade is over. That is what they have chosen.

      That will never happen, I mean that peaceful collaboration. USA will want to dominate the Chinese but as anyone can see, China's Communist Governance is far superior to the former's democracy or any other for that matter & China will not be anyone's running dog. Let us give credit as the CPC deserves all the credit and respect they deserve. They did so much for modern China today, yet I scarcely read any compliments about them. Communist is not evil, it is very good; if it comes with Chinese characteristics. I don't really know who coined this term communist but it doesn't do justice to the CPC and Mr XJP. I will never look west again. Just look north and admire and wallow in happiness because my ancestors' motherland is doing exceptionally well.

    There's a governance system for each and every country. There is no "one size for all" democracy.
    As long as each country mind its own business, and not to criticize other countries for their political system, then we will have better and more peaceful world.

    I lived in Hong Kong in the 1950s and 1960s. It was certainly prosperous, and many people mistakenly believed that this was due to British colonial rule. The real reason was that China at the time was closed to the outside world. All the goods the country produced were funneled through Hong Kong. Practically everything you could buy anywhere in the world were made in Hong Kong. In reality, none of them was. Easy money was to be made in Hong Kong just by putting on the "made in Hong Kong" label. All this changed when China became open to the world. Nowadays, it is impossible to find anything made in Hong Kong. The annual Spring and Autumn Trade Shows, which had large impact on the Hong Kong economy, have moved into mainland China. The decline in prosperity in Hong Kong is inevitable, and has nothing to do with political systems. The fifty-year agreement is not an outright extension of the colonial period. It is a transition period during which gradual changes are to be implemented. Hong Kong is in a unique position to share China's rising economic might. The protests are ill-directed.

      True..Hong Kong prospered because China closed the door policy. Under the British, Hongkonger has their mindset tune more superior than the Mainland Chinese. Not anymore, without China , Hong Kong will be left behind. Water, foods and tourism.

    My relative's house maids in HK were paid by some organisation to attend the protest on the weekends, wonder where the money came from ?
    If this type of riots were to occur in the US, they would be shot by the police for sure, lucky it was in HK.

      They were already shot by the British in the 1960s and Martial law was imposed for a period of time.
      Sad that today's generation don't take their history very seriously.

      We often see very few westerners speaking so fairly on Hong Kong and China issues, sadly not even from the academic circle. The western media are completely biased and politically motivated to brag on western democracy and supremacy which is so detrimental to world peace. It could enlarge differences and invite regional conflicts to nobody's interest during the present difficult situations such as global warming and pandemic.
