Today I am going to show you how to run 16-bit applications from Windows 3 on Windows 10! It takes around 5 minutes to do and is very easy.

Windows: Still runs old 16-bit applications with little work
Mac: Can't run 32-bit applications on the latest version
Microsoft LOVES retro-compatibility. That way they don't waste time porting every game from the previous system to the new system, they just need the user to select which OS this program should run on.
@@computer_dudein fact you can't name a folder "CON", "AUX" or "LPT1" just because of the way ms-dos worked and outputted data through ports
you used to do "echo data > LPT1" to output stuff to the LPT1 port. same with other ports

Exit Windows option only made sense back when it ran on top of DOS. The weirdest sort of crash I'd seen in Windows 2.x and 3.x was when it would suddenly exit and drop you into DOS -- with no error message. The weird part was that this system abort was:
* you were back at DOS prompt in text mode, not in a graphics mode like some of the more common crashes
* clean -- the DOS environment didn't appear to be corrupt as far as I can tell. Perhaps most puzzling (and shocking) was CHKDSK wouldn't find anything wrong in this type of crash (in most other crashes, a reboot would most certainly be require, and CHKDSK would find a couple problems in the filesystem).
* exit was *really* fast -- instantaneous. Normal exit from Windows took noticeably longer.

Interesting that the Windows Classic theme is still in Window 10, and even using the Aero color palette.
You can disable the Windows 10 ui completely with some hacks, but doing that breaks the UWP apps and some system elements like the start menu
@@Doggy368 What about the Aero Basic theme that appears when programs are ran with Vista/7 compatibility? It's strange to me Microsoft left that and the classic themes in 10 with no way to use them as themes.

Rohail's Tech Solutions Copy rundll32.exe and rename it as dwm.exe, rename original dwm.exe and reboot. Just make sure to rename C:\Windows\Systemapps and do registry tweaks to get classic flyouts and more Control Panel applets.

The Windows 10 calculator has more functions, they are just distributed differently. Especially the "programming" part of the calculator is more advanced.
It also has converters, which includes currency and that's obviously impossible without internet.

Can confirm, I use some of the converters pretty often. Also brought them up to my dad once after he complained about the calculator being useless
I think the ExitWindows dialog box is from WineVDM, not the Program Manager. When a 16-bit program wants to shut down the computer, WineVDM is "the supporter" and helps 16-bit program to make Windows shut down so it shows the "ExitWindows" dialog.

This really is a testament to the work the Wine project is doing to create a multiplatform open source Windows platform. Even on "real" Windows it is useful for compatibility

@@kyoudaiken yup. There really should be a calculator manual, it'd help so many users at least attempt to get to know everything about it. That's just me, though.
@@kyoudaiken Yep, the other modes can be found under the ☰ (aka "hamburger menu" -- the icon that looks like a stack of three horizontal lines). I think it was a good idea to have the seprated standard/scientific/programmer modes. For most folks "standard" mode fits the bill. Scientific mode would satisfy the more technical user. Programmer mode is probably the most specialized mode and least likely to be useful for most folks.

Actually if you change the theme colors using windows 3 control panel, it applies system wide without otvdm. I mean if you use that on windows 7 and open safemode the colors you set still apply

Windows 10 You’d need a virus that is somehow mine boggling enough to get through the increased security measures and advancements made in Windows needed to fuck over the master boot record. Don’t think it would be that easy nowadays. Still possible though.

Video suggestion 1 MB of video memory tried this on windows 7 and windows xp and they both automatically went into 8-bit color mode, I was wondering if windows 10 would do the same

I think that OTVDM warns the user when an app, for example Program Manager tries to trigger ExitWindows, which in earlier versions of Windows exited Windows, but in newer versions it logs you off and the developers of OTVDM were aware of that and added an warning. Also, ExitWindows?????

Running under DOSBOX. Download and install DOSBOX, mount a folder and/or edit the configuration file "dosbox-0.74-3.conv".

Finally, I can play my copy of Total Distortion on a modern computer.
The mods are a bit aggressive. I said "ExitWindows??????", quoting the video, and it was considered Spam, with an instant temp ban, no warning, no nothing. It was one single line long and wasn't repeated. It also wasn't annoying and others were excused if they said the same thing.
Holy crap I got so amazed by being able to use the WIndows 3 calculator. It's like it wasn't supposed to be possible :D
