The only boxer I ever talked to. He herd me singing in the dressing room and yelled out don't quit your day job. He joined in and I didn't realize it was him until I came out. We both started laughing and dapped it out. Best defensive boxer ever...

Pernell Sweet pea Whitaker was one hell of a boxer and I don't think he had any legitimately unquestionable losses. He arguably beat Julio Cesar Chavez and at least drew with Felix Trinidad. It's so darkly ironic how such a defensive wizard with so much heart, who could dodge everything, was run down by a careless heartless driver. Rest easy champ! You will always be in the boxing hall of Fame and on the Mount Rushmore of the sport.

That robbery against ramirez drained a little from him then the robbery against chavez was the proverbial nail in the coffin of his confidence & natural charisma. This man was one of the top 2 boxers of the 80s & a top 5 fighter in the 90s..those robberies affected his confidence & spirit even tho the physical skills were still there. It matters when your unbeaten record is stolen from you & your career affected unjustly through no fault of his own.
No telling where his legacy & career would've went by the decision makers getting those decisions right.

The robbery against Ramirez did nothing to Pernell. It actually made him a better fighter. He came back and won the rematch and continued to dominate pretty much his whole career. The questionable judging never regressed his fighting ability. He even became a more aggressive fighter later in his career.

It sucks how Benton never got the middleweight title first for being drafted in the Korean War and then being shot. No question. Pound for pound one of the best to ever do it. One of the few dudes of the Morden era who, would have made it in any era. Legit pound for pounder.

Pernell was insanely nice. Beautiful counter puncher. Slick elusive movement. He could put together punches well which is never talked about. He could do it all and had plenty of pop in his punches as well which is also never talked about.

A fraction of a second before you decide to throw a punch at Sweet Pea, he moves out the way ever so slightly so that he can come back with an off-angle and effective counter punch. We all have reflexes and reflexes can be developed but what Pernell had was a gift from God. RIP to the Champ. Great video.
