      AddiTechSavvy those early episodes are surprisingly emotional. I think James L Brooke's was a little more involved back then. I think once Conan was hired, they started blending more humor with drama, and the show found its groove

      I was a kid when I first saw this episode & in all honesty, I cried at the part you see around 20:46-21:05 when Bart got his history test back, too & says "I tried & this was the best that I could do!...".

    The Simpson's episode that really got to me was "Summer of 4 ft 2", when Lisa tries to make new friends and Bart gets jealous and tries to ruin everything. It really hit me in the feels because my brother and I would fight over petty things all the time, but as we got older I realized I really cared about my brother too much to let petty stuff get in between us, and we stopped fighting so much, or did our best to talk through things instead of fighting, and forgive each other no matter what. He actually passed away really suddenly (blood clotting) not three weeks after we'd had a really terrible fight but talked and forgiven each other in the end... as horrible as him dying was I just remember thinking "what if we had never made up, and his life ended without us ever working things out?"... a small mercy

      I didn't like that episode. I actually found myself sympathizing with Bart and finding Lisa to be a blame-shifting hypocrite. Bart didn't try to sabotage things until after she started demeaning him and copying his quotes and mannerisms. In the end, she deserved that humiliation, and when she threatened him later, I just wanted him to slap her hand and tell her that she brought it on herself.

    Bart gets an F's ending actually really speaks to a huge issue in the education system that is just NOW beginning to be addressed. The system tries to hammer kids through the same methods even though some can't learn that way. Bart passes because of his ability to communicate the information he learned verbally, as he probably has some type of learning disability and suffers when in the testing environment trying to recall information to write it down. Developing brains are a mystery and I hope someday we offered many methods and opportunities for Kids to learn.

    How could the episode with Maggie's first word not be on the list? With the sign that says "remember you're here forever" and Homer covers the sign with pictures so it says "do it for her". And her first word is "dada" but no one hears it.
    Seriously, no where on the list at all?

    • @shrooms7683

    • @strawberrysoulforever8336
      @strawberrysoulforever8336 6 ปีที่แล้ว +24

      Maggie's first word was actually two seasons earlier. She said nothing in the episode you're talking about. She said "Daddy" at the end of "Lisa's First Word". Maggie being born was in "And Maggie Makes Three". The episode aired early in 1995, just before I was born. "Lisa's First Word" would have aired in either late 1992 or early 1993.

      Yep - that was great, but personally I reckon the '22 short films about Springfield' (number six on NCs list) homage to Pulp Fiction was pure joy - that one was definite proof that The Simpsons was a cartoon for adults, but targeted to kids (who, like the rest of us, at that age, mightn't actually understand the context/joke but still just know it's fun - it NEVER gets old - always and still makes me laugh. Thank you Matt and NC.

    Bart gets an F really gets to me. I used to work hard in school and that (luckily) got me to university. But here, it just seems that no matter how hard I work, I can't do well. I need to work all the time just to stop myself from failing. I've tried everything but nothing works. I've had to accept that I'll pretty much always be bottom of the ranks (yeah, we get ranked).
    Doesn't stop me from trying- I love what I do but I wholeheartedly agree with NC here. The lesson that sometimes hard work doesn't always pay off is a tough one and normally learned through experience because most people and media shy away from teaching and discussing that harsh fact of life.
    I'm always going to be grateful for what I have- don't want to sound like an unnecessary sob story! (Us lot in the TH-cam comment section, with internet access, have most probably lucked out compared to most people around the world). But as I've grown up, the sympathetic gut punch I used to get from this episode has turned into an empathetic one. Regaining perspective and being grateful for what I have eventually helped me overcome my daily struggle against my lack of intelligence.

    • @risingofthethorn1197
      @risingofthethorn1197 7 ปีที่แล้ว +22

      I think Bart gets an F and Homer's enemy kind of hit me personally in those regards. I skated through elementary school, was a popular kid and then reality reared it's ugly head. People would make fun of me cause I couldn't walk, and overtime I've come across more and more people like that.
      it doesn't help that you have those kind of people that skated throughout their lives who then turn around and says "Society should be survival of the fittest." and there is a part of you that almost wishes that something would happen to them so they know what it was like to be on your level.
      So yeah everytime I see that ending scene, I want to give bart a hug.

    • @sue9963
      @sue9963 6 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      I know exactly what you mean Rising of the Thorn. I relate to Bart Gets an F for that exact reason - I worked my butt off and spent so many nights studying hard, yet the best I could always do was average. One of the most horrible feelings is doing your best and still failing, because it's the moment you have to accept that you're the "dumb kid" in the class.
      And I hate to admit that a part of me is a bit like Frank Grimes...I have a cousin who skated through her schooling with minimal study, and who became successful because her parents knew the 'right' people. She is now getting married to a rich man and goes on expensive vacations every few months. And I know I should be happy for her...but a part of me hates that she has had everything handed to her on a silver platter when she really hasn't done anything to deserve it. She definitely has a "society should be survival of the fittest" attitude and it sucks, because she has never had a single worry or monetary problem in her life. That's how the world works though. Sometimes people who try really hard will fail, and people who don't try at all succeed.

      Yo I experienced this very same feeling when doing my Masters, I felt utterly stupid, everyone was better than me, LITERALLY, and it did not matter how hard I tried, I always got bad grades, it really hurts and still does to this day. I used to be one of the very bests in high school (never the best tho) and university. As soon as I got into my masters, everything changed tho. I still have not accomplished what most people younger or the same age than me have obtained with hard effort and focus. I hate that and I still get depressed because of it.

    I also identify with that number 1. I struggled so much through school and when I knuckled down and properly studied and such I did even worse. I ended up having to sacrifice doing A-levels to retake my core subjects because I got such bad grades the first time.
    That is when I learned about study tactics and how the way I was being told to study wasn't helping me. I don't learn from reading texts, it doesn't stick. I learn better from doing and listening, so I got audio books for maths and science and for english I started practising the things I was learning by writing my own stories.

    Ok, here on Argentina, we don't like The Simpsons...we've made a religion out of it. There's more meme's pages of the Simpsons in Latin America than in every other part of the world.
    Every joke, can be used over every situation of our daily lives.
    For example, in your version of "I called the big one Bitey", Homer says "A la grande le puse Cuca" (I named the big one Cockroachy, would be the most close translation...). And, not to be hateful or anything, but Dan Castellaneta can't compare to Humberto Velez. That guy made jokes that would never work in spanish...actually work. And that's a hell of a job, to be honest...

    • @shorewall
      @shorewall 6 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      I like the spanish dub, and Homer's voice is a big reason for that. And ditto on the Simpson's religion. When I was a teen, my brothers and I would quote simpsons for every situation in life. :D

    • @winterlucy
      @winterlucy 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I'm from Argentina and although I really loved Humberto Velez' voice there's SO many jokes lost in translation. For one joke translated to Spanish you missed two on the same sentence. It used to be the most clever TV show. Like 15 years ago.

      @victorsales5470 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @amyschildgamerlive4519 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You like the spanish version that's cool. We can disagree and still be fine. You do at least seem to respect the source material. (Awknowledging it's an english show made on America and that's the root of the show's influence) then I actually see no reason we cant all get along even if we disagree on which version is better. :)

It's great to me not only because of the plot and comedy but also all the guest stars in that episode felt like they belonged in the Simpsons Universe cause it got so crazy near the end, it's one of the few times where I didn't notice a celebrity guest cause they didn't announce it like "Wow, Wade Boggs!" It was just some superstars are here and their jerks too cause the took our jobs, only other episode that worked like this was "Stark Raving Dad" where they said it's Michael Jackson but that was the joke so that almost counts

    Another great episode that I personally see as a companion piece to Bart Gets an F is Lisa's Substitute.
    It's another season 2 episode which centers around one of the children, and both episodes portray a very real and bitter aspect of growing up. While Bart struggles in school despite his best efforts, Lisa struggles with her father's relationship and sees her new teacher as a sort of replacement adult male role model.
    Both episodes are notably emotional, and end on happy notes. Bart passes his grade, and Lisa accepts her father for who he is. (And both largely take place in school, as well.)

I use Ad Block all the time so I don't have to see clickbait ads and don't have to sit through every insufferable commercial at the beginning of every TH-cam video. "But it hurts them." And? I don't care about them, I only care about myself.

      I think by far the worst Family Guy EP has to be the one that centered around Meg being fed up with being abused constantly and then the end just saying how she should suck it up.
      That was fucked up and the by far one of the worst things I've seen on TV regarding abuse of any sort.

      Literally my life in a single sentence right now. My family, good natured people, got kicked out of our house a few months ago because we stood up for ourselves against other families that were harassing us. Do *they* get any repercussions? NO. WE get kicked out after being there EIGHTEEN YEARS with NO prior issues with anyone, and yet THEY STAY despite not even being there for FIVE and having problems with nearly EVERYONE. Why were they favored over us? Because they're friends with the landlord.

      ChemKat I agree. plus, I personally think that The Simpsons, as well as shows that it paved the way for, such as Futurama, Family Guy, King Of The Hill, South Park, etc. are the only things on TV worth watching nowadays. if you don't like crime drama, sports, biased news, or "reality television", there's nothing left to watch but cartoons.

    • @adampkalb

      I agree. No one making The Simpsons (probably) ever got to a point where they thought "Well, this is the one. This episode is so great, we never have to make any more of them! It defines the show as a whole and can serve as a series finale because we will never be able top that!" That would be like making a pencil that lasts forever. I will always remember that episode of The Fairly OddParents.
