  • Is this the cure for my fence problems? I have been around all the electric fences, clearing weeds and fixing faults, but I still have low voltage. So now it's time to go back to the basics, and I think I found the problem...

    Try going out at night and looking at all the "T" posts, if its a short on a post you'll be able to see it arcing in the dark. Another point I would check if you have any direct buried (under gates or across rds. etc.) electric fence wire sometimes the insulation on it can break down and short out.

    • @frankdeegan8974
      @frankdeegan8974 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Also at night most of the white noise will be gone, you maybe able to hear the snap from a short. A transistor radio set on an am radio station may pick up the short also, they might have improved the radios enough to where they now filter out more of the electrical interference, but what the hell.

    Do a diagram of your fence system. Then starting at the fencer, isolate each section until you voltage comes back. Add back one section at a time and check your voltage. If the voltage stays, mark that section on your diagram. You may have to break it into many pieces to isolate the fault. Don't forget that the fencer itself could have a fault. If you could borrow one, try swapping it out.

    My 5th grade science fair project more than 50 years ago was “Principles of the Wheatstone Bridge”. As you might guess, this was largely my Dad’s idea. He worked for the phone company and was in the Signal Corps in WWII.
    Anyway, from what I recall, you can find out approximately where your short is in a long wire (think downed telephone line or shorted electric fence) by balancing the resistance between a test circuit connected to your unknown shorted wire so that current doesn’t flow between them. Once you know that resistance, you can figure out what length of your wire would be required to equal that resistance. Knowing that you can measure out that length and look for the short. Or so I remember. I hope that is right.
    Good luck with the instrument and I bet it will work on that principle.

    Go half way down the circuit and open the circuit, test there with your grounding tester. Determine if the problem is before or after your open point. Reestablish the circuit and go half way forward or back towards the fault and do it again, pretty quick you’ll be on top of the problem. Be mindful of multiple problems on one circuit.

    I used to work with farming electronics. If you are reading voltage in the ground lead near the energizer I would seriously consider opening the energizer up and blow all the flies out. I'd wager that's your dead short.
    It could've dragged the output transistor with it which also can fail short.
    If I had cows I would keep a spare energizer, not least to test with.
    PS. This sort of device can fool you when you isolate it from the fence. It might not show the problem until it is dragged by a load.

    on pins and needles waiting for the resolution!!! on a related tangent.. first time we put an electric fence up to keep our cattle out of the grazer we had planted, I had my dog with me. Small honey colored terrier, Susie, with a long upward curling tail. We had just turned the fence on to test and wouldn't you know it, Susie walked under the fence which was higher than her back, so no contact. But that long upward curling tail made excellent contact. I heard a long string of "yipe, yipe, yipe, yipe!!!" and saw a brown streak running across the pasture and under the house!!! That was nearly 50 years ago, and I'm still crying tears I'm laughing so hard remembering poor ole Susie running from that fence!!! Don't know what she thought was after her. Omigosh... my sides are hurting. I guess I'm gonna fry for laughing at that poor dog. But, needless to say, that section of fence was working fine!
    Oh, have you checked all the insulators? (I'm sure you did, but thought i'd ask anyway).

    The electric fence has always been one of my biggest frustrations on the farm. Never fails here that the deer mess with things or the plastic insulators will stop insulating. I have seen our fence arc through an insulator to the fence post, if it happens long enough it will leave a scorch mark where the arc is passing through the plastic.

    Pete, please try disconnecting your pastures that are farthest from the fencer first, working your way back to the fencer, leaving each one disconnected until the fencer starts putting out the right voltage. Then, you will know the section that has the short. The smaller you can make these sections, the smaller area you will have to look for the short.

    Real life! No fool no fun 😜 and as frustrating as the problem may for some reason I just know that you will stay at it until the problem is solved. Thanks for another good video. Your sense of humor is the best.
