- This is the story about that time I almost died. A very small scratch landed me in the hospital for four days, and largely incapacitated me for the next year. What did I learn from the experience?

My grandmother who was 92 and my best friend just passed, I must say Pete your videos are providing me with some comfort during some of the worst days of my life. Your calm voice and attitude have really helped soothe my pain a bit and I thank you. So glad you made it through and it's a good video to share because people may overlook septic shock very easily.

Just went though this with my Husband. He developed an open wound with the redness on his leg. It was so scary and i thought the wound would never heal but it did. I watch him like a Hawk now and give him lots of Probiotics and fermented foods to help his gut. So glad you're still around. You make the World a better place.
Just watched this, July 2024. Don't know if you'll see this comment Pete but my admiration for you and your approach to your farm and life in general is indescribably heartfelt. Things happen. There is drama. It's how you react that makes all the difference. And you reacted the best way possible.

Your lucky to have your wife, I worked with a guy who lost his leg from stepping on a nail while roofing, if he went to the doctor earlier he would still have his leg.

when i was a cop i was bitten i went to the hospital then sent home , i came back in the morning my hand looked like a baseball glove . i was admitted they threw lots of anti biotics three days later i was out. this scared me big time. Im glad your with us PETE
I love how honest you are about your experience after the fact. My husband had a heart attack 5 or 6 years ago. He was pretty good about trying to eat healthier for about 6 months or so, then gradually fell back into the less healthy foods. Unfortunately he eats even worse than before the heart attack. Instead of pestering him, I tell him, as long as you're happy, you do you, I'll do me.

This is no joke I actually experienced the same thing the flesh was falling off my left leg and spent 7 days in the hospital and 7 bags of vancomicine antibiotics I completely understand how you felt I just stubbed my toe at the lake is all how it happened!! That is like a story that I tell at work. To my operators to report all injuries no matter how minor they are. The story that I tell is about a man that stuck a sonic toothpick in his foot and didn’t realize that the tip broke off in his foot and he almost lost his foot because of it. Thanks for the story. I'm glad you're here to tell your story. I can identify with you. I became septic after having my colon nicked during surgery and not until 5 days later did it all come to a head. More surgery, 8 days in the hospital and then a long recovery. Though I was lucky. There was no damage to my intestine. Again I'm glad that you survived and give us joy with your channel. Continue for you and your family to remain healthy. Be well.
The irony about how a scratch almost killed you while you end the video half hugging a tractor so old and rusty it almost looks like a tree is not lost on me Pete. Thanks for another great life story.

Yeap, it’s not fun. I went through a similar thing from a a psoriasis cyst. I was shutting down as well. Spent 8 days in the hospital. It can be a scary thing. Glad you pulled through Pete. 🇺🇸✌🏻❤️

My dad died of sepsis in 84 …. His organs shut down after a week …sepsis is acute and life threatening
Septicemia is no joke. Had that at 19 years old. Crazy time in the hospital. I was exhausted for about a month or so.

Pete I just watched this two days ago and commented on a barbed wire incident I’d just had. Low and behold, I looked down just a moment ago and was surprised to see redness, and quite a large swelling toward my elbow. I had drawn the circle like you said you’d done, and I see it has spread below it a bit in the other direction. I’m cancelling my plans tomorrow and trying to get into my dr…if not, then a walk-in clinic. It’s a bit sore, I just hadn’t paid attention to it bcs I was busy. THANK YOU

I had a very similar event.
I had got a skinned knuckle wile driving a tractor
I was changing hydraulic lines all the time and got fluid in the spot
Next thang I knew- I was in the E R with blood poisoning.
Almost died.

Hey Pete glad you are OK. I know how you felt when this happened to you. I got a scratch on my knee and a week later I had MRSA and a staff infection. I was in the hospital for 3 1/2 days getting pumped with antibiotics and almost lost my leg. Not sure where you are with GOD but he was definitely watching over me. I am extremely happy you made it through that blip of you life. I think GOD was watching over you as well because you are now a huge influence to many people including myself. Love the videos and keep going strong bud

New York state is >99% not New York City. The vast majority is rural America - farms and forests.

I had the same thing about 3 years ago from a dead jaw bone that was replaced because from radiation from throat cancer treatments I went through in 2012 through 2017. I like you, felt horrible. It got really bad to where I couldn’t walk to the car so my wife could take me to the hospital.
First of all, Glad you made it through the experience. Secondly, I think we are all beginning to realize how amazing Hillary is. Thirdly, watching you two work as a team is inspiring.

The one great thing that you had going for you is that Hillary was a critical care nurse and I didn't have that. I love your stories and look forward to them every time you post. Thanks for relating. In September of 2006 I had 60% of my pancreas, spleen and a few lymph nodes removed because of cancer. In November I remember going to work, getting about half way through my commute feeling lousy. I noticed all of my windows were steamed up in the truck. I got home, took my temperature and it was 104. I remember riding in the car going to the hospital and thinking, "I've survived 5 bouts of cancer and now an infection is going to kill me. I had developed a fistula that resulted in sepsis. I spent about a week in the hospital until the infection was under control. Pretty scary times.

I know how you feel Pete I wasn't hit by a splinter of wood but I went through the sepsis. I had a wound that I didn't notice on my left forearm it didn't bother me but it kept worse so I went to sickbay to have it looked at. The corpsman lanced it and found that it was a horrible infection nasty smell, etc...I was taken to US NAVAL Hospital Okinawa and placed in ICU. I stayed there for 4 days it must be a magic number Pete. I was given so many antibiotics and finally something worked. I had been on the rifle range yearly qualifications for Marines. The firing points were paved with asphalt the aggregate was coral and that gave me the infection. I am glad to see that you have bounced back Pete.
A biting fly nearly killed me. The bite didn't look infected, nor hurt, but just wouldn't heal. Eventually symptoms of the staph infection set in and I became very ill. Three surgeries, 19 days in ICU, 3 1/2 months on IV antibiotics, and 8 months later I was infection free and learning to walk again. It's been two years, but I'm almost back to complete health and mobile again, although I'm on an oral antibiotic for life. So glad you are healthy again, too. Thanks for the videos, glimpses of a life well lived, and teachable moments.
My wife went through the same thing from a strep infection in her arm was on ventilator and dialysis for 2 weeks lost both hands and toes on both feet. That was 1.5 years ago and is doing fine now!!!

Hillarie, thank you for saving Pete's life! If you hadn't spotted that infection when you did, like most of us men, he would have left it until it was too late. Doesn't bear thinking about.
Thanks for the story. My near death experience came while I was still working for the man trying to pay for the farm. It was in the seat of a crane. Everything happened so fast that there wasn't time to think, react, let alone reminisce! But it was a moment that I relived over and over.
You can't put some experience into words. It changes your perspective. People around you can't really understand your decisions after that point. Until they have the experience?
Your videos are seriously the best videos on TH-cam I’ve watched every video an most of them I’ve watched twice! Your not just about a farmer your part of the building block to our country an what built it! The life lessons you talk about or show or do inspires me to be a better father better husband an hopefully a better community person! There needs to be more families like yours in this world. I wish but nothing but the best for you all! Please don’t ever stop making videos lol

pete wacthing about your near death from a small cut on your shin great story that brings me on to a story about bulls and i watch you in the pen and i think omg hes mad im from ireland and know all about quit bulls there the most unpredictable and should not be trusted they will attack with the drop of a hat and kill i could put my hand on a bulls back and walk him into the yard that we had for 7 years he was so gentle and never showed any bad form and one day he turned on me i was 22 years old and thats what saved me plz be so so careful when with bulls they will turn in a split second keep up the good work and i send you all the luck of the irsh
I've experienced a few times when the Drs had done all they could and they'd warned my loved ones there was little hope, no big life changing experiences for me either yet a slow increase in understanding what's no longer important to me.
Now I do enjoy each day just as it is, glad to be alive, so I do take time to smell the roses, acknowledge all living things and scatter more seeds.

Wow that was more than a bump in the road. I would of called it a mountain. Because it toke a whole year to get better between your scratch and your gut..l say god was watching out for you and your wife was too. Bless them both for looking out for you. It's great when you can count on family.
What a scary story Pete. I've had a family member go through pretty much the same thing you did. It is a very scary experience for you but family. But on a side note I wanted to say thank you. My father and I watched your restoration on your MD. We got inspiration to fix my great grandfather's 1952 super m. We're not gonna paint it or anything. But she runs good.

So glad you made it through Pete. I went Septic about 13 years ago and had a very similar experience. I actually collapsed walking into the ER. I had a fever of 105.7 and my heart rate was 188. I just remember a blur of doctors and medical staff. They had two IVs going and also packed me in ice. The scariest part I remember is they strapped a defibrillator to my chest thinking I may have a heart attack at any moment . I was in the hospital for three days and took another week to recover and mostly sleep. It’s scary, scary stuff. I’ll never forget that the doctor that wrote up the case wrote that I was a “very pleasant man” 😄 I guess I stayed polite and affable at least.

Pete you are truly an inspirational person! I had a friend once who you remind me of. He was a talented artist and craftsman who could do anything from building, furniture design and repair, glass blowing, drawing and painting and the list goes on and on. He had a stroke and lost the use of this dominant side and had to relearn to draw, write, drive and function left handed only afterward. You and Hank set strong examples for the high achievements possible for us. I honor you and thank you for that!
Brings back memories. I was horseback trail riding and hit a cutoff tree limb right on the shin and that started the chain of events you described. The urgent care finally sent me to the ER. I had a deep staph infection that was turning into MERSA had I waited and not treated. It took several months to get over this. I still have a light stinging sensation on occasion, which is normal.
Wow Pete you went through alot. I had c-diff once. It was horrible. I just had my ileostomy reversed and a few weeks later I got the c-diff. Thank God you are all better. And thank God I am better too.
My dad almost died cutting wood. He was sitting on the tractor with the log splitter on the back. They cut down a tree and it ended up falling wrong and it landed on the tractor. The tree crushed the steering wheel, nearly missing my dad sitting on the tractor. Literally was inches from death.
Had a little scratch in the jungle in Belize. Five days later at home, I was sent to the emergency room. It was sepsis and lucky for me treated successfully with an antibiotic. What a story , lucky your wife is a nurse. Take care.

Your story tells so much of how are day can change pretty fast and the outcome could have ended very differently as you know, but the help and support of your family helped to bring about your successful recovery.
I’m glad you made it. Next time you get a tiny scratch, get some soap and water and wash it, the put a little neosporin on it. You never know! Give Hilary a hug, she is amazing too!

I totally get your experience Pete. I almost died twice with blood clots. I simply learned to enjoy the moment I'm in. Love your channel.
I went septic in 2018. A big kidney stone dislodged and blocked my kidney. I didn't know anything until one day I started shaking violently, completely out of control and was hyperventilating like you. I was barely able to do two things, call 911and unlock the houses front door. I woke up in the ER and must admit morphine is good stuff. The stuff they removed from my kidney looked like oatmeal. Spent 10 days in ICU. Doc's said I was lucky I called 911 when I did, they almost lost me. If I waited one more hour I would have died from septic shock.
