I wish theyed re-record it exactly like this and put it out for release because this is THE BEST version of the song. Some of it is accidental genius particularly the unintentional echo effect because Bono's a fair away from the microphone. The applause at the end kind of spoils it but it can't be helped that the crowd acknowledged how good this version is.
You know what ....i've never liked Bono at all , but every video like this on the net of them just " doing it" makes me respect U2 even more. There are, and have been, very few musicians / bands as good as this live. Consummate professional musicians. My love hate relationship with them has resulted in 7 live performances over the years, and i have to admit, that they are, in my opinion right up there with the very very greatest few bands bands of all time.
I was just about to comment that. Then I read yours , then I wrote this reply which in retrospect was actually longer than what I was planning to write .
Its amazing like these two simply connect instantly and make it perfect even in such an improvised scenario... thats real talent and real musical empaty
i watched this live and it blew me away, the follwing week chris evans had to play it on the show again due to demand. they got stacks of mail literally ( emails were too fancy then)No youtube back then. I am so glad someone recorded it and put it up here for prosperity.
There was a time prior to this performance that u2 had thrown caution to the wind, and explored music for creative purposes. Pop was the culmination of that exploration. For various reasons it was seen as a step too far. Before that, they had gradually edged themselves ever further from the mainstream, a mainstream which, ironically, they had helped create. They subsequently made a purposeful decision to conform, which was dramatically initiated through their album "How to dismantle an atomic bomb". This song though, and in particular this acoustic version, represents a fleeting time, before that album was released, before the marketing took hold and before they needed to "act" like the greatest rock band in the world again. Bono still retains that self-deprecating persona, the edge is meek, and the song is incredible, a wonderful performance. There is an authenticity present here, that I feel disappeared soon after.
The blue shamrock check out the EMA version of Every Breaking Wave, they haven’t lost anything yet. Or Moment of Surrender, Song for Someone, list goes on
Agree 100%. At the same time, I think it's impossible to sustain that amount of creativity and exploration in the long term in any performing art. In other terms to be avant-garde. Think McCartney, Dylan, or Scorsese today.
Agree with everything you say except that their decision to conform started an album earlier than HTDAAB, it happened with All That You Can't Leave Behind.
Also think the commenter has mixed his albums up. This was from All that you can’t leave behind & this performance I’m fairly sure was a year or so before the album dropped.
Great version. Great harmonies. But the band version is still so much better. That lead guitar part and Bono’s vocals in the climax are transcendent. The Edge is a pretty underrated background singer too.
Since the 360 tour, i'm constantly listening to U2, also on You Tube. To my surprise, I discover so many songs, unknown to me until now. I heard the original version of this one yesterday, for the first time. I had to get used to the sort of metal sound of it, but Bono's voice made me listen to it again and again, until I came to appreciate it. But this acoustic version got to me instantly, I can feel it in my stomach and heart. Great song and a performance. Thanks so much for sharing it.
Yes, boje19. And songs coming from another world are one of the main themes of the book. They've obviously nailed it. This shows what brilliant songwriters they are. After you read the book you can't believe anyone would dare make music for those lyrics. But they did it and succeeded brilliantly. Simply, they're the best ever.
watched this live on tfi Friday blew me and a lot of others away as the following week cris evens showed sack 's full of letters people sent in asking him to show it again, yep long before social media.

this song just makes me speechless....i' listening to it all the time...since i don't know when....and it's just great....so amazing how they play together in such a beautiful way, so pure ...it sounds as if it was something from another world
wow i'm stunned. lovethis song though it's so sad. can't imagine loosing somebody i love like that. thank you two for singing this and thanks for sharing :) "for what i worshipped stole my love away..."
From that time up to 88 is the real u2. Bono is a business man/politician Dad trying to be a rock star these days. Still has some great moments from time to time he is 50 so its amazing hes still able to have those moments after all those years. We can't be to critical its easy to criticize
2024!!!!!!! I still come back to this after watching it live on TV
1:30 "Go lightly down your, darkened way....Go lightly underground" Still gives me goosebumps
these two are amazing...
Bono's voice is absolutely perfect here. U2 FTW.
Beautiful! The harmonies between Edge and Bono are terrific!
when he sings, "let me love you..." chills up the spine.
If I had Bono's voice I would sing all over the time!
This song is timeless.
SOOO much talent in one band.
I wish theyed re-record it exactly like this and put it out for release because this is THE BEST version of the song.

Best version of this song! They should write more songs like this and perfom them acoustic.
Isn't anyone gonna write about his VOICE????? He's a magic AAANGEEEELLL!!! lol! I love him soooo much :)))) xxxx
1:30 damn his voice gets a godly power
I love that they hadn't even worked out the key beforehand....just decide it live. Thats a seasoned performer!
Thats what ya call talent, effortless
Still coming back after 10 years to hear this..... still gets me xx
So Beautifully Sang
Amazing lyrics...amazing performance...amazing band...bravo, Edge and Bono. Brilliant
I remember watching this live.
It was very special.
I remember forever

Fairly certain Chris Evans played the full clip on the following week's show, such was the response to it.
me too man. Had a major impact on me. Went straight to the guitar after it. Raw and beautiful.
What year its recorded?
Total pros, the boys are the best band in the world. Period.
Yeah, these guys are really talented. There's a reason you can still be popular after 30 years.
Wonderful

This performance is amazing, I love 'Ground Beneath Her Feet' and 'Your blue room'

I loved how chilled out they playing this song.. it's such a stunning performance
Nach all den Jahren einfach immer noch ein genialer Song
He mesmerizes me...takes me away. So wonderfully made

I get chills every time I listen to this!!!
Bono's voice is so great!!! I like this song a lot:D
What a wonderful rare acoustic in irish pub!
I'm pretty sure this is what it sounds like in heaven...Bono I love you
amazing! I love Bono's raspy voice!
I can not find the words to describe how beautiful and perfect this is!
A magnificent trio - Bono, Edge and the Gibson hummingbird . Love it

@@niallnigeynige Correct. This song was released on the Million Dollar Hotel soundtrack in 1999 I believe.
Great to hear that! There are so many beautiful songs from U2 out there. They keep surprising me.

hauntingly intensely beautiful, it's like Bono is pouring out the pain in someone else heart for them in the lyrics of this song.

WOW. This is fantastic. Just acoustic guitar and two great vocalists. Just amazing.
beautiful!!!
Wow! I always loved this song, and I love this acoustic version! Shows that they really are great musicians!
There's talent right there folks!
I love this song :)
Great performance.
Just one word to describe: EXTRAORDINARY
Beautiful. One of U2's best.
bono has the best male voice ever, more quality than freddie
I think so. It's the shear versatility as well as his falsetto control that really sets him apart.
I think so
Cmon. I love U2. One of my 3 favorite bands of all time. But Freddie is in a class by himself. Everyone else is fighting for second place.

Ive watched this 3 times and could watch it again!.
A lament written about his mum. Words really capture that sense of loss. Very underrated but beautiful song
i think you're wrong!!!
U2 wrote the music and melody but the words came from Salman Rushdie from the book of the same name
it's perfect...everywhere, everytime
And that it why I love U2! AWESOME
I like this stripped back version, should have been like this on the album
+Jay Bod I prefer the original version but this is also nice
this show was recorded before the album version
