I have all the Firebox stoves and they are all outstanding. I am like you, I like the more robust 5 inch platform than the Nano for most situations and appreciate the lighter weight than the stainless steel version. The titanium was worth the premium to me, but you can’t go wrong either way. It’s a great stove- very versatile after you get all the accessories- and the guy who runs Firebox is a class act.
Yes it is worth the money. When I can’t decide between two similar high quality stoves . . . BUY BOTH. I fully acknowledge and accept responsibility that I have a “stove” problem. It’s a well documented fact in my household. But it’s my vice, it doesn’t hurt anyone, and I I can live with it.
Me too! I was going to start a “Stove Anonymous“ program… But I also have a problem with procrastination. 🤣😉 I have the Firebox Nano because I do a lot of solo lightweight backpacking, but I have the 5” Firebox Gen2 as well, when I’m doing shorter destination hikes to do some dry baking.
Count me as a member of the club. Especially the firebox stove club. Nan in ss and ti and 5 inch in ss and ti. Accessories and all. Like Ernie I take the Ti ones carried on me at times. The SS ones are for the car or in get home bags.
You will never regret buying the best there is, if you can afford it. If you can't afford the best, then buy the best you can afford. I have never felt bad about not being able to buy the very best, but I have been disappointed every time I have bought the cheapest thing available. I really like mine a lot. I picked up most of the accessories too. This a lifetime stove and it will still be going strong for my grandchildren. I think the Ti is the way to go. Positively !
Long time user since launch. Get the stainless steel version. I use it often and still have no issues. I get that it weighs a bit, but the 18 gauge stainless steel holds up so well. The engineering put into this product is incredible. My advice is to at least get the extended grill and the black nylon carrying case.
I have had mine for just a couple months now. Have cooked on it 10-12 times and I am super impressed. I have another manufacturers twig stove and the Firebox has superior design features that make a big difference. Two sides being shorter then the other two make top loading really easy. The 4 slots on top allow fire stick placement for even small pots. The titanium cools down so much quicker then stainless steel. This is a BIG deal if you use it mid-day for lunch and need to pack it up to continue hiking, canoeing or cycling
I've been using Firebox stoves exclusively for past 4 yrs. Started with the SS 5", but soon begged Steve for a Ti version. Two yrs later I had one, and no looking back. I don't do much light weight hiking, but for that I use the Ti Nano version. I mostly canoe camp, with many portages, so weight is still a factor. I also do a lot of winter camping in Northern Wisc and Minn and the UP, but pull a sled, so weight is still a little less of a factor (everything is heavier in the dead of winter). I have not even used my prior favorite stove, the MSR WhisperLight. But the SS FB stove actually weighs MORE than the WhisperLight with a liter of fuel. There are advantages and disadvantages to both systems. I imagine the past few years fire restrictions out west (and sometimes the Boundary Waters) would be a huge factor. I don't like to rely on fossil fuels, and especially disposable canisters when stick and branch fuel is plentiful. I do have to carry a folding saw and method of splitting (heavy bush knife or mini-hatchet) to insure plenty of dry fuel in winter or wet conditions. These tools serve other bushcraft purposes as well. I almost never make a fire when solo camping, but the 5" FB stove provides all the entertainment and hand warming I need. I have had the 5" Firebox Stainless for three years and love it. When I'm short distance backpacking with heavier "old school" gear or car camping it is my go-to stove. Funny, considering I started out wondering what someone would need one of these for... until I started to watch Steve's videos :-) Recently the wife said I should get the Ti firebox for my birthday. Now I can take it for longer trips due to the weight reduction. It just adds to more places I can enjoy the Firebox now that I understand and appreciate the flexibility of it.
If I only had time to grab one stove in an emergency this would be the one. Worth a try with coconut briquettes Swedish torch style, no smoke after a short time and burns for hours.
I do the same with B&B charcoal logs! Works great! I will have to try the coconut charcoal next. The B&B does smoke for a bit before the flame really takes off, but it cooks well.
Really like the way you worded your reasoning. That's what it all boils down to because in the end it is all for fun so "you" should go with what "you" want. For what ever reason they may be! 😆

The funny thing is I begged Steve to make me one in titanium after I used the stainless steel version. He said it would be to expensive. Before you know it the titanium version hit the market and I jumped on it. I winter camp only and this is ALWAYS in my pack, by far the best stove on the market. We use it to cook as well for a heat source. Quality gear.
Great video! I have the stainless version and it is all I need. I'm not hiking with it but I use it on my motorcycle adventures. Weight is not an issue for me. If you are hiking it in, get the Titanium. As a mechanical engineer, there is zero difference in the thermal dynamics of either stove. Wood is wood. Im late to the firebox gen2 5", mostly because in Canada when it was a newer product it was more expensive than it is now. I ordered the SS all in one kit for $125.74 after tax. Great review, hooing this will be a stove ill be happy with for years to come
I recently bought the firebox in titanium before Christmas and got the steel nano when it was first on kickstarter! I’m a fan. If you can afford it, the titanium is worth it in my opinion. Steel is a great option too! There is no perfect option - it is all personal preference.
A very good take on the issue! We're backcountry discovery route motorcyclists, and cutting weight is always something to consider, especially for improved bike handling. I already have the stainless one, and will definitely be getting the Titanium model before our next expedition into the boonies.
Another great review. I love my titanium nano. I’ve tried to pick up the 5” titanium firebox a few times, but it was sold out then. I’m fairly certain they are back in stock and I look forward to picking up one soon. Steve is a solid guy who makes some awesome TH-cam videos of his own featuring his products. Although I don’t know him personally we have interacted on TH-cam and IG. I enjoy supporting 🇺🇸 made products and the large majority of his are.
I had the same dilemma with a European close concurrent, the Bushbox XL. where we have both a stainless and titanium versions with comparable price points as the Firebox. Finally, I gave myself the the titanium version for Christmas. A cry once, enjoy ever-after situation. Never regretted the choice, as it is light enough to carry it everywhere. I picked up the titanium about a month ago, used it a few times and absolutely love it. I have the stainless steel Gen 1 and use it all the time but never on backcountry trips. It was just too heavy, now with the light weight version that will 100% be my go to stove paired with the Triangia for rainy days.

I was lucky enough to get one of the first 100 titanium firebox stove ( actually got stove 94 of the original 100 stoves)! At almost half the weight of the stainless steel, yes it’s worth the cost! I have both the stainless steel and titanium firebox stoves!
I have both versions, and yes, the titanium is definitely worth the money IF you'll be packing it in for a overnight with all that extra gear. Its really that simple. If you day hike and want a hot lunch and/or a confined warm-up session with coffee the stainless is great. If you travel by bike, ATV, Canoe or donkey the stainless fits right in. If someone else is going to carry the stainless brick its suddenly a perfect bargain. If you car camp solo or with one other person the stainless works great. If you car camp with more than 2 people don't buy either Firebox stove, just use a Weber Smokey Joe or similar "tailgate" style grill that is capable of grilling all of the meat/burgers/brats in that 50 pound cooler while its sitting on top of the picnic table (instead of burning the table or hunching over a tiny stove of any kind on the ground and trying not to knock it over while grilling 2 pieces of meat at a time.) If you want the flexibility of doing it all - except cooking for a crowd - then just get the titanium, you'll be glad you did, especially since you can probably sneak it into your wife/kid's pack without them noticing :)
I Totally agree with you Ernie, The weight deference is Awesome, but what I like the Best about it, is the cool down quickness, The price is a little steep, but if I had the Money I would defently buy the Titanium. Is stainless steel vs Titanium as simple as weight vs cost or are there any other considerations such as durability or longevity? Personality I am more concern about which one will be better after years of use than I am about the cost or weight difference. This Ti 5" Gen 2 is more than worth the money, to me. (Of course, I'm a sucker for anything Firebox Stove, which may be a small factor.) I have the stainless steel which I can use for additional cooking space when car camping. Great review!

I have had the SS FBox for years and it's what we use when camping from a vehicle. I have rarely taking it in my backpack, packraft or kayak because of the weight/size and opt for another brand in Ti when I have to carry my gear. Because I already have a couple Ti folding stoves that work very well I doubt I will buy this one but I would suggest Firebox may want to consider making a Ti version of this that is 2/3rd's the height of this one (similar size to the bushbox LF...sweetspot).

@@larryn8Just to be clear, you setup the empty Firebox on top of a grill and that grill was filled with charcoal briquettes, and you lit the charcoal, then let them burn until they went out on their own and all the while, the Firebox sat empty on a grill rack above these coals?
I have (1) titanium firebox,, and I am going to buy One more. Using the 3Qt zebra pot,, baking a chicken, pot roast or pulled pork. That’s a amazing level of outdoor cooking,,, Also,, adding the Trangia gas attachment, for canister cooking. And as you mentioned,, chunk charcoal, pellets,wood or alcohol stoves,,,,!!!! There’s to much Versatility/ multi functional use in this system. This is my favorite backcountry cook system,,, Joshua

Greetings from Nova Scotia Canada & I had BOTH, the Kampmate Titanium & Stainless version of their Stove & the Titanium stove was 100 times BETTER than the Stainless BUT, I used the stainless pot stands on the titanium version instead. The titanium pot stands were just TOO flimsy under the heat, but the stainless stove warped badly. This was MY OWN experience of stainless & titanium stoves. 💯👍👌
I'm confused. You said that the pot supports, by which I assume you mean the firesticks, from the steel version were sturdier, but then you said the stainless stove warped badly? What stainless stove? I thought the stainless Firebox stove was even sturdier than the titanium
Late to the comments. My main reason to pick the ti version is the lower weight. I can carry this much easier in a haversack for a day trip, and for longer trips carrying more gear weight is even more important. I like wood stoves mainly because I never have to worry about running out of fuel.
I would be happy to spend some of your money 😂. FireBox 🔥stoves are my favourite. Day hikes I normally have a Nano & Trangia burner, my 5 inch G2 pretty much stays in my backyard as a mini BBQ.
I have the Titanium 5 inch coming this week. I chose titanium because of the weight. I don't have a lot of money to just drop on multiple stoves, so I bought this one, because I know the weight I'm willing to carry. I know I won't like the weight of the SS version.

I have and love my ss 5” and the ti has been on my list for awhile to upgrade personally having packed the ss version for months at a time the lighter ti version seems like a much better option for me but that being said for car camping or some other means of transport the ss is very robust and I feel not having tested the theory yet of course would handle unforeseen circumstances much better then the ti version
Were I looking for a larger titanium stove my only reservation would be the cost. I will stay with my VERY tiny Emberlit Fireant as it is all I need and weighs under 3 ounces. That sure seems a nice stove yet it is not for me. Thanks for the looksee!
I have the nano titanium version and no matter how hard I try I just can't get a boil going on it, I will be picking up this 5 inch version for the extra horsepower alone
How big of a pot are you using? For the nano I wouldn't really use a pot much bigger than 1200ml. I've had no issues getting a nice rolling boil with 2 cups of water. I've gotten 4 cups to boil when it's me and the wife, it just takes a bit longer.
Annd, I broke... On the way is a 5" firebox and associated accessories in Ti. Looking forward to it, I've got a bag of prepped firewood waiting for it.
@PaleoHikerMD , Hey Ernie-I watched your "Roast" of the "Clikstand" recently (after purchasing one after the first video). In the latest review of the Clikstand one of the Main Detractors of it was that it couldn't take "smaller size cups or pots". If the Firebox Firesticks will work for the Firebox to accept "smaller size cups or pots" , will they work for the "Clikstand"? (Yeah, and I agree, for that much money they should include the solid fuel plate and a carrying bag of some sort for the Clikstand!) Thank for the Reviews! Well if it comes with all the items that the deluxe comes with then yes if not it cost to much for just the basic model. The stainless steel G -2 5" deluxe is a very good buy , but will the titanium G-2 5" hold the 5 Dutch ovens that the stainless steel G - 2 5" can hold ?for got to add the Dutch ovens where full of water P.S that is full size Dutch ovens

I so want one of these one day but the annoying caveat with these stove at least in the UK is that even though the steal version costs £60 (or £90 for the deluxe kit) but the titanium version comes in at around £260 even though I could order it straight from firebox for$150 which is only £106 plus shipping and import charges I understand companies still have to deal with shipping charges and American companies always keep the same RRP from dollars to pounds which I don't agree with at all
I have the Firebox Nano in titanium but haven't tried it out yet. Haven't been camping due to fear of corvid. Should be able to get vaccinated soon. I've been considering the Firfly XL stove from QiWiz lately and was wondering if you ever considered reviewing his products.
I'm thinking the main reason for having the ti version is if you have 3+ people that are relying on one stove for a multi day trip. For me the nano is fine for 2 people, I'm pretty sure after that people would be eatting in shifts if they had to rely on the nano. The 5" is the dedicated camp stove. :P

In Canada you can get it at the Canadian Outdoors Company. They have a physical store near Toronto (in Mississauga) as well as free shipping on orders of $50. The store has a lot of really good and unique stuff because the owner is very passionate about having the best lifelong equipment. I love the conversations with their staff who are VERY experienced.
Okay I have watched enough to know your a gear hound but if it came down to one bag of gear what would you pick -stove, cups, spoons, etc. what would you take and weather conditions wasn’t a factor. You can’t take your garage/shed?
I burn charcoal briquettes in mine a lot. They burn very hot and I’m not really interested in anything I feel like I’ve got to baby. I’ll go with the stainless regardless of price.
I don’t understand the attention on wood stoves where users also carry their wood fuel. Why go through the soot and stuff - if you’re going to carry the fuel why not the simpler and less messy liquid, solid chem, or butane fuels?
A 1 pound stove is really never going to make it into my backpacking load. My Ti Nano does all the time. My 5" SS Firebox is always in my car camping load. I just don't need that big a wood stove on the trail.
If you buy the Stainless version (stand alone) it’s made in the USA, but then you have to accessorize. If you buy the ready made kits they are made in China. Not sure about the Titanium 5”......most Titanium products are imported from China. I’m not bashing China (heck, I worked over there five years) but I DO buy “made in USA 🇺🇸 every chance I get.

Great video! I have the stainless version and it is all I need. I'm not hiking with it but I use it on my motorcycle adventures. Weight is not an issue for me. If you are hiking it in, get the Titanium. As a mechanical engineer, there is zero difference in the thermal dynamics of either stove. Wood is wood. The material holding it has nothing to do with the temperature generated.

Im late to the firebox gen2 5", mostly because in Canada when it was a newer product it was more expensive than it is now. I ordered the SS all in one kit for $125.74 after tax. Great review, hooing this will be a stove ill be happy with for years to come
I recently bought the firebox in titanium before Christmas and got the steel nano when it was first on kickstarter! I’m a fan. If you can afford it, the titanium is worth it in my opinion. Steel is a great option too! There is no perfect option - it is all personal preference.
A very good take on the issue! We're backcountry discovery route motorcyclists, and cutting weight is always something to consider, especially for improved bike handling. I already have the stainless one, and will definitely be getting the Titanium model before our next expedition into the boonies.
Another great review. I love my titanium nano. I’ve tried to pick up the 5” titanium firebox a few times, but it was sold out then. I’m fairly certain they are back in stock and I look forward to picking up one soon. Steve is a solid guy who makes some awesome TH-cam videos of his own featuring his products. Although I don’t know him personally we have interacted on TH-cam and IG. I enjoy supporting 🇺🇸 made products and the large majority of his are.
I had the same dilemma with a European close concurrent, the Bushbox XL. where we have both a stainless and titanium versions with comparable price points as the Firebox. Finally, I gave myself the the titanium version for Christmas. A cry once, enjoy ever-after situation. Never regretted the choice, as it is light enough to carry it everywhere. I picked up the titanium about a month ago, used it a few times and absolutely love it. I have the stainless steel Gen 1 and use it all the time but never on backcountry trips. It was just too heavy, now with the light weight version that will 100% be my go to stove paired with the Triangia for rainy days.
I love box and for what they stand for there a USA based company I stand by them 100%

I was lucky enough to get one of the first 100 titanium firebox stove ( actually got stove 94 of the original 100 stoves)! At almost half the weight of the stainless steel, yes it’s worth the cost! I have both the stainless steel and titanium firebox stoves!
I have both versions, and yes, the titanium is definitely worth the money IF you'll be packing it in for a overnight with all that extra gear. Its really that simple.
If you day hike and want a hot lunch and/or a confined warm-up session with coffee the stainless is great.
If you travel by bike, ATV, Canoe or donkey the stainless fits right in.
If someone else is going to carry the stainless brick its suddenly a perfect bargain.
If you car camp solo or with one other person the stainless works great.
If you car camp with more than 2 people don't buy either Firebox stove, just use a Weber Smokey Joe or similar "tailgate" style grill that is capable of grilling all of the meat/burgers/brats in that 50 pound cooler while its sitting on top of the picnic table (instead of burning the table or hunching over a tiny stove of any kind on the ground and trying not to knock it over while grilling 2 pieces of meat at a time.)
If you want the flexibility of doing it all - except cooking for a crowd - then just get the titanium, you'll be glad you did, especially since you can probably sneak it into your wife/kid's pack without them noticing :)
I Totally agree with you Ernie, The weight deference is Awesome, but what I like the Best about it, is the cool down quickness, The price is a little steep, but if I had the Money I would defently buy the Titanium. Is stainless steel vs Titanium as simple as weight vs cost or are there any other considerations such as durability or longevity?
Personality I am more concern about which one will be better after years of use than I am about the cost or weight difference. As an aside, I love you channel and believe that I have watched everyone of your videos multiple time. Best wishes Tom
This Ti 5" Gen 2 is more than worth the money, to me. (Of course, I'm a sucker for anything Firebox Stove, which may be a small factor.) I have the stainless steel which I can use for additional cooking space when car camping. Great review!

I have had the SS FBox for years and it's what we use when camping from a vehicle. I have rarely taking it in my backpack, packraft or kayak because of the weight/size and opt for another brand in Ti when I have to carry my gear. Because I already have a couple Ti folding stoves that work very well I doubt I will buy this one but I would suggest Firebox may want to consider making a Ti version of this that is 2/3rd's the height of this one (similar size to the bushbox LF...sweetspot).

I have both Gen2 & Nano in Ti. I did my burn-in on the barbecue grill over charcoal. No warping.
Did you fully set it up or burn it in folded... What was your process
@@norseman1137 I had it set-up and let charcoal burn out. After letting it FBS’s completely cool, I completed initial burn with a Swedish fire touch.
@@larryn8Just to be clear, you setup the empty Firebox on top of a grill and that grill was filled with charcoal briquettes, and you lit the charcoal, then let them burn until they went out on their own and all the while, the Firebox sat empty on a grill rack above these coals?

I have (1) titanium firebox,, and I am going to buy One more. Using the 3Qt zebra pot,, baking a chicken, pot roast or pulled pork. That’s a amazing level of outdoor cooking,,, Also,, adding the Trangia gas attachment, for canister cooking. And as you mentioned,, chunk charcoal, pellets,wood or alcohol stoves,,,,!!!! There’s to much Versatility/ multi functional use in this system. This is my favorite backcountry cook system,,, Joshua

Greetings from Nova Scotia Canada & I had BOTH, the Kampmate Titanium & Stainless version of their Stove & the Titanium stove was 100 times BETTER than the Stainless BUT, I used the stainless pot stands on the titanium version instead.
The titanium pot stands were just TOO flimsy under the heat, but the stainless stove warped badly.
This was MY OWN experience of stainless & titanium stoves.

I'm confused. You said that the pot supports, by which I assume you mean the firesticks, from the steel version were sturdier, but then you said the stainless stove warped badly? What stainless stove? I thought the stainless Firebox stove was even sturdier than the titanium
Late to the comments. My main reason to pick the ti version is the lower weight. I can carry this much easier in a haversack for a day trip, and for longer trips carrying more gear weight is even more important. I like wood stoves mainly because I never have to worry about running out of fuel.

I would be happy to spend some of your money 😂. FireBox 🔥stoves are my favourite. Day hikes I normally have a Nano & Trangia burner, my 5 inch G2 pretty much stays in my backyard as a mini BBQ.
I have the Titanium 5 inch coming this week. I chose titanium because of the weight. I don't have a lot of money to just drop on multiple stoves, so I bought this one, because I know the weight I'm willing to carry. I know I won't like the weight of the SS version.

I have and love my ss 5” and the ti has been on my list for awhile to upgrade personally having packed the ss version for months at a time the lighter ti version seems like a much better option for me but that being said for car camping or some other means of transport the ss is very robust and I feel not having tested the theory yet of course would handle unforeseen circumstances much better then the ti version
Could you put it in a conventional oven, slowly increasing the temperature, to heat treat it before taking it out?
Were I looking for a larger titanium stove my only reservation would be the cost. I will stay with my VERY tiny Emberlit Fireant as it is all I need and weighs under 3 ounces. That sure seems a nice stove yet it is not for me. Thanks for the looksee!

I have the nano titanium version and no matter how hard I try I just can't get a boil going on it, I will be picking up this 5 inch version for the extra horsepower alone
How big of a pot are you using? For the nano I wouldn't really use a pot much bigger than 1200ml. I've had no issues getting a nice rolling boil with 2 cups of water. I've gotten 4 cups to boil when it's me and the wife, it just takes a bit longer.
Annd, I broke... On the way is a 5" firebox and associated accessories in Ti. Looking forward to it, I've got a bag of prepped firewood waiting for it.
@PaleoHikerMD , Hey Ernie-I watched your "Roast" of the "Clikstand" recently (after purchasing one after the first video). In the latest review of the Clikstand one of the Main Detractors of it was that it couldn't take "smaller size cups or pots". If the Firebox Firesticks will work for the Firebox to accept "smaller size cups or pots" , will they work for the "Clikstand"? (Yeah, and I agree, for that much money they should include the solid fuel plate and a carrying bag of some sort for the Clikstand!) Thank for the Reviews!

Well if it comes with all the items that the deluxe comes with then yes if not it cost to much for just the basic model.
The stainless steel G -2 5" deluxe is a very good buy , but will the titanium G-2 5" hold the 5 Dutch ovens that the stainless steel G - 2 5" can hold ?for got to add the Dutch ovens where full of water

I so want one of these one day but the annoying caveat with these stove at least in the UK is that even though the steal version costs £60 (or £90 for the deluxe kit) but the titanium version comes in at around £260 even though I could order it straight from firebox for$150 which is only £106 plus shipping and import charges I understand companies still have to deal with shipping charges and American companies always keep the same RRP from dollars to pounds which I don't agree with at all

I've the SS large one and Ti small one. Both burn great. I'm still trying to make up my mind to "dump" money into Ti large ;)
I'm thinking the main reason for having the ti version is if you have 3+ people that are relying on one stove for a multi day trip. For me the nano is fine for 2 people, I'm pretty sure after that people would be eatting in shifts if they had to rely on the nano. The 5" is the dedicated camp stove. :P
Being from Europe, do you know of (or have) a comparison between this titanium firebox and the bushcraft essentials titanium bushbox XL.

In Canada you can get it at the Canadian Outdoors Company. They have a physical store near Toronto (in Mississauga) as well as free shipping on orders of $50. The store has a lot of really good and unique stuff because the owner is very passionate about having the best lifelong equipment. I love the conversations with their staff who are VERY experienced.
Okay I have watched enough to know your a gear hound but if it came down to one bag of gear what would you pick -stove, cups, spoons, etc. what would you take and weather conditions wasn’t a factor. You can’t take your garage/shed?

I’ve just bought the titanium because my poor knees can’t take the weight of the standard g2 along with the other necessities of an overnight camp.☹️
It seems to “tick” more. And is if you live on the coast it rusts less.
I use the stainless when I use an engine to get out there. Walkin or paddlin, titanium. The weight is noticeable
but saying you got the Titanium version just sounds cool
I burn charcoal briquettes in mine a lot. They burn very hot and I’m not really interested in anything I feel like I’ve got to baby. I’ll go with the stainless regardless of price.
I got the all in one kit for less than the price of a titanium stove. I'll take value over titanium any day.

I don’t understand the attention on wood stoves where users also carry their wood fuel. Why go through the soot and stuff - if you’re going to carry the fuel why not the simpler and less messy liquid, solid chem, or butane fuels?
I don't carry my fuel on trail, and I don't think most do. Wood stoves are popular because you can leave the fuel behind.

A 1 pound stove is really never going to make it into my backpacking load. My Ti Nano does all the time. My 5" SS Firebox is always in my car camping load. I just don't need that big a wood stove on the trail.
If you buy the Stainless version (stand alone) it’s made in the USA, but then you have to accessorize. If you buy the ready made kits they are made in China. Not sure about the Titanium 5”......most Titanium products are imported from China. I’m not bashing China (heck, I worked over there five years) but I DO buy “made in USA 🇺🇸 every chance I get.
IT puts me off buying when I see made in USA. I don't want to risk my hard earned money on shoddy goods.
